Start a petition?

Dear MoveOn member,

Yesterday, we asked you in a survey what local issues you're paying close attention to, and you answered: "The funding for teachers, police and fire."

MoveOn can't take up every important local issue—but did you know that you can start up your own online petition on this or any issue on our new website, SignOn.org?

Creating a petition is incredibly easy—in just a couple short clicks, you can immediately start sharing your petition with friends to collect signatures.

Click here to start your own petition on SignOn.org right now.

Thanks for all you do.

Secret Olympic TV plan

Mitt Romney's dancing horse is competing in the Olympics. (Really!) We've made a hilarious TV ad about the huge irony that Mitt gives the horse incredible care, but wants to cut healthcare for average Americans. Let's run this ad during the Olympics! We need to act quickly to get our key ad spots. Can you chip in?

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

The Olympics are on now and the Romneys' dancing horse, Rafalca, is there to compete. The horse lives quite a cushy life on a 5,000-acre estate, with a chartered jet,1 and better healthcare than the average American family—including chiropractors and massages.2

The irony jumps out at you: Romney pampers that precious horse, but he can't wait to repeal affordable healthcare for 30 million Americans.

So our creative team made a hilarious TV ad about Rafalca—the kind that gets huge amounts of additional media coverage because reporters keep talking about it. If we raise $250,000, we can try to run that ad during the Olympics, just when Rafalca is competing! And we have to make our move now if we want to get these key ad spots.

We've got to go big now, because Romney is actually ahead in the latest Gallup and CBS News polls.3 Most people haven't been paying much attention to the campaign. They will pay attention to the Olympics, though, so this is a perfect opportunity to define Romney as the candidate of the wealthiest 1%. Can you help us run this awesome ad during key moments of the Olympics, before we miss our chance?

Yes, I can chip in $5.

For months, news about the presidential campaign has dominated the headlines, especially recent stories about Romney's mysterious offshore investments and his stubborn refusal to release basic tax information.

But even after all of that reporting, Romney is still gaining in the polls, and the latest USA Today poll reveals some disturbing misconceptions about him. Nearly two-thirds said that his business background would help him make good decisions on the economy.4

In fact, Romney's Bain Capital was a pioneer in replacing American workers with low-wage labor in foreign countries.5 And Romney's deals often made him profits even as factories were closed and workers were fired.6 That's why our new TV ad hits Romney hard on his outsourcing history.

We've got to get out the truth: Romney would be a disaster for the middle class. And time is running out to do that. Our Olympic TV ad is an incredible opportunity to reach a huge audience with that powerful message. Can you help?

Let's send a message to Mitt: Quit horsing around with America's future.

Thanks for all you do.

Justin, Lenore, Mark, Carrie, and the rest of the team

P.S. Of course, as very patriotic sports fans, we'll be proudly cheering on all of America's Olympic representatives, including the dressage horses and their riders—you can join in with us using #London2012 on Twitter. Go USA! And giddyup, Rafalca!

P.P.S. MoveOn gives average citizens the ability to influence the political system in a meaningful way. This is a great example. Your donation can actually help change the campaign conversation and set the agenda. Donate now.

Your calls worked!

Dear MoveOn member,

Earlier this week, thousands of MoveOn members called their Senators, both Democrats and Republicans, and asked them to stand up for the middle class and make the mega-rich pay their fair share of taxes.

Your calls helped to pressure the Senate to do the right thing. On Wednesday, the Senate passed a Democrat-sponsored bill to let Bush tax cuts for the rich expire, while extending tax cuts for the middle class. And a Republican-sponsored bill to keep the tax cuts for the 1% was defeated!1

The votes on both bills moved forward without being filibustered—a sign that both sides were feeling pressure from constituents. This is a huge step in the right direction after two years of hard work by MoveOn members and allies to make sure that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share of taxes.

President Obama has already pledged to veto any extensions of tax breaks to people making more than $250,000 a year, in part responding to a MoveOn-started petition on the White House's We The People site, and thousands of calls, petitions, and emails asking him to commit to ending the Bush tax cuts for the rich.2

There's still more work to do! Next week, the House will be focused on its own tax legislation, and it's going to be a tough fight—Republicans have sworn to hold onto tax cuts for the mega-rich. MoveOn members are going to flood House Representatives with calls to make sure 1% politicians don't hold middle-class tax breaks hostage to give millionaires another handout.

With the strength of 7 million MoveOn members, we will continue to fight for the 99% until we win—stay tuned for next steps!

Thanks for all you do.

No more handouts for millionaires

Just a few hours from now, Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand will vote on whether to stand by the middle class and oppose more tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. Can you call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand and make sure they are voting for tax breaks for the middle class, not the wealthy?

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: (202) 224-6542

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: (202) 224-4451

I called Congress

Dear MoveOn member,

In just a few hours, Republicans in Congress will continue to hold America's economy hostage, simply in order to extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

What on earth is the GOP thinking?!?! Our economy is still struggling to recover, and the GOP's refusal to compromise one bit means that uncertainty over the end-of-the-year "jobs cliff" is growing.1

Senate Democrats have called for a simple solution to the standoff: Everyone already agrees that the middle-class tax cuts should be extended, so why not vote to extend them now? They've called for a vote today. But Senate Republicans are saying they'll block passage of the sensible tax cut extension unless the super-rich get extra tax breaks as well.2 If Democrats present a united front, and refuse to consider extending tax breaks for the wealthy, the tax cuts will automatically expire at the end of the year.

Most Senate Democrats are standing strong, but they're getting pressured from all sides. That's why it's so essential that they hear from MoveOn members today. Can you call Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and make sure they are voting to end the tax cuts for the rich?

We need to move quickly—this vote is just a few hours away. Democratic senators like Schumer and Gillibrand need to hear from hundreds of their constituents telling them to stand firm against tax breaks for the rich and thanking them for doing so.

Call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand today and ask them to vote for tax cuts for the middle class and not millionaires.

Here's where to call:

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: (202) 224-6542

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: (202) 224-4451

Then, please report your call by clicking here:
http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FSNY_1.FSNY_2&cp_id=1815&id=47127-10220574-KGS5eux&t=3

The GOP may call them "job creators," but we know better. The one-percenters who get this tax break hold over 84% of our country's wealth, and some make over 400 times what the average American worker earns.3 In fact, recent evidence shows that when the wealthy get tax breaks, it sends money out of the country.4 In short, the tax break is just more money in their pockets for no reason whatsoever.

The latest polls show that more than 60% of us want tax cuts limited to those making under $250,000.5 We've spent years giving tax breaks to the wealthy, with no evidence that it helps the economy. Now we have a chance to change that.

We need Democratic senators like Schumer and Gillibrand to resist Republican pressure, and insist on a middle-class tax break that doesn't include a millionaires' handout.

Please call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand TODAY and ask them to vote in favor of tax cuts to the middle class, and not the wealthy.

Dear MoveOn member,

A few months ago, a bill was passed by the Utah state legislature to ban sex education in public schools. It was a terrible bill, and the only chance of stopping it was to get the state's Republican governor to veto it.

It seemed like a real long-shot, but a school bus driver named Paul Krueger was outraged and started a petition on MoveOn's website, SignOn.org. Paul's petition spread quickly through Facebook and email and even got the attention of the state's big newspapers and TV stations.

Then, something really amazing happened. After more than 40,000 people signed Paul's petition, the governor announced that he would veto the bill! The tea party was outraged, but because of the public groundswell, the bill was dead.

Now it's your turn. Using SignOn.org, you can start your own online petition and invite your friends to sign it. We'll send the most popular petitions to other MoveOn members to help build support for your cause.

Monsanto's latest attack

Below is an email from Robert Shepherd, a MoveOn member who created a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

Dear MoveOn member,

So-called "Monsanto riders," quietly slipped into the multi-billion dollar FY 2013 Agricultural Appropriations bill, would require—not just allow, but require—the Secretary of Agriculture to grant a temporary permit for the planting or cultivation of a genetically engineered crop, even if a federal court has ordered the planting be halted until an Environmental Impact Statement is completed.

That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org to Congress and President Barack Obama, which says:

Stop the Monsanto Riders. Unless a citizen's army of farmers and consumers can stop them, Congress is likely to ram these dangerous riders through any day now.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Stop Romney: Throw a party in Inwood

2012 Election Community Parties are the first step to stopping Romney and the 1%. But we need more parties in Inwood! Can you host a party on July 21 or 22 so more people are ready for the election?

Host an election party!

Dear MoveOn member,

Incredible.

On Friday, at 100 campaign offices nationwide, thousands of MoveOn members delivered a message directly to Mitt Romney demanding that he release his tax returns.1 It's working. Pressure is mounting from all sides—even Republicans are urging Romney to release his returns.2

Mitt Romney will stop at nothing to hide from the public the fact that he's a 1% candidate. That's why, this election, we're organizing to make sure voters know the truth about Tricky Mitt.

To kick-start our people-powered campaign for a 99% victory in November, members are throwing 2012 election parties on July 21 and 22. The parties are a great way for MoveOn members to meet, talk about the fall election, and build community.

There are over 200 parties happening so far, but many will fill up quickly, leaving some people without a party to attend. Can you throw a 2012 Election Community Party in Inwood so that no MoveOn member gets left out?

Yes, I want to throw a 2012 election party!

There are 7 million MoveOn members—that's enough muscle to match the 1%. To leverage our size and power, we need members like you to throw a party. By throwing one, you're multiplying your impact by getting more MoveOn members to fight for the 99% this election.

Election parties are fun and easy to throw, and all the steps and materials for a good time are provided. We need to connect more MoveOn members in Inwood so we're ready to stop Romney and the 1% from winning in November.

Can you help and host a party Saturday or Sunday, July 21 or 22?

Yes, I want to throw a 2012 election party!

Thanks for all you do.

Stop the J.P. Morgan Loophole

Below is an email from U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, who is leading the charge for a ban on high-risk trading by big Wall Street banks, including J.P. Morgan. Sen. Merkley created a petition on SignOn.org that's spreading like wildfire. Now, he's asking for help from MoveOn members in New York and across America.

Please add your name to Senator Merkley's SignOn.org petition urging Ben Bernanke and the Fed to close down the J.P. Morgan loophole.

Dear New York MoveOn member,

Bankers on Wall Street wrecked our economy by taking reckless risks in pursuit of massive paydays. And, as J.P. Morgan has made clear, Wall Street learned nothing and is still gambling.

If you agree that big banks should not gamble with the federally insured deposits that families and small businesses depend on, click here to sign my petition:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=276552&id=46133-10220574-OHSy8jx&t=2

I successfully fought for a ban on high-risk trading by big Wall Street banks. This rule, called the Volcker rule firewall, is meant to ensure that when Wall Street's bad bets blow up, you and I don't get burned again. But for the last two years, Wall Street's legion of lobbyists have been trying to blow holes in that firewall.

Wall Street lobbyists want the Fed to write the J.P. Morgan loophole into law. We can't let that happen. And with your help, we won't. Please add your name to my SignOn.org petition urging Ben Bernanke and the Fed to close down the J.P. Morgan loophole.

Thanks!

–U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley

What's Romney hiding?

The heat is on Mitt Romney to explain what really went on in his financial past. We're flooding Twitter asking him to #ReleaseTheReturns and come clean with American voters. Can you join in?

Tweet Now!

Dear MoveOn member,

Just a few hours ago, a news story broke in the Boston Globe that Mitt Romney may have been in charge of Bain Capital for longer than he previously reported—and now the heat is on Romney to explain what really went on.1 The press is all over the story, and people everywhere are wondering what Mitt is hiding by not releasing his tax returns from this period.

One simple way for Romney to let everyone know he's telling the truth would be to just release his tax returns. So far, he has released only one year's tax return, compared to the twelve his father released when running for president, and the 23 Mitt gave the McCain campaign in 2008 when they were considering him for vice president.2

That's why we're running a huge campaign demanding that Romney come clean with the public and release his tax returns. And there's one way in particular that you can help the push: by using Twitter to keep the heat on Romney to release his returns.

Because Twitter is so public, if enough of us pile on it will be unavoidable for the Romney campaign. And if tons of us are tweeting, reporters may take an interest, carrying our message even further. Can you join in?

Tell Romney you want him to #ReleaseTheReturns.

The American public deserves to know more than one year's worth of tax history for a presidential candidate—especially when there are legitimate questions about his financial record.

We already know that Romney has his money in offshore tax havens like the Cayman Islands, keeps a Swiss bank account, and got a $77,000 deduction for his dancing horse in 2010.3 But we don't know what he's hiding by not releasing more of his tax records.

As Mitt's own father pointed out, "One year could be a fluke, perhaps done for show."4 It's time for Romney to come clean and let the American public know the truth about his taxes, and you can help make that happen by keeping it in the public eye on Twitter.

Tell Romney you want him to #ReleaseTheReturns.

Thanks for all you do.

2012 election kickoff in Inwood

We're launching MoveOn's national election strategy to win in November at 2012 Election Community Parties on July 21 and 22. Can you host a party in Inwood?

Throw an election party!

Dear MoveOn member,

Talk about a contrast in styles.

This past Sunday, Mitt Romney held a $50,000-per-plate fundraiser at David Koch's mansion in the Hamptons. MoveOn partnered with allies to crash the party with 200 protesters, the "Romney-mobile" with a dog strapped to the roof, and a 99Airlines plane flying above with a "Romney has a Koch problem" banner. We grabbed national headlines and put the spotlight on Romney's connections to the 1%.1

That's what MoveOn's built to do—pit our people power against their big money. So instead of a lavish affair, we're launching our national election campaign with the exact opposite. On July 21 and 22, MoveOn members are throwing 2012 Election Community Parties—potlucks, backyard cookouts, and big community parties to fuel a 99% victory this fall.

MoveOn is 7 million members strong—twice as big as in 2008—and we know from experience that member-led parties are a smart way to leverage our size. Hundreds of MoveOn members are needed to throw parties so that tens of thousands more can attend and get ready for election season. Throwing a party is fun and rewarding, and hosts will get everything they need—from a detailed host agenda to a national prep call.

Can you throw a party to get MoveOn members in Inwood fired up for the election?

Yes, I want to throw a 2012 election party!

I can't host, but I do want timely election updates!

In 2008, MoveOn members helped Obama win by contributing $88 million and volunteering 21 million hours. This year, we're rolling out an innovative effort to register and turn out young people, single women, and people of color to vote in November. And MoveOn members will continue our campaign to expose Mitt Romney's 1% agenda as he crisscrosses the country.

With the amount of money Romney and GOP Super PACs are raising, this race will be close. In some states, it could come down to a few thousand votes—like in Missouri in 2008.2 Not only will every vote count, but every volunteer will too. If we can get an army of 99% volunteers ready for action by August, we'll have three months to do all we can to prevent disaster in November.

The plan starts with parties rooted in our communities. They're designed so that anyone—regardless of experience—can throw one. Have a small gathering in your living room, a potluck at the park, or a cookout in your backyard—it's up to you.

Can you host a 2012 election party on Saturday or Sunday, July 21 or 22?

I'll throw a party!

I can't host, but I do want timely election updates!

Thanks for all you do.

important update re: Navy to kill 1,800 whales and dolphins and deafen 15,900 more

Friends of the sea:

Our petition to stop the Navy from killing 1,800 whales and dolphins and deafening 15,900 more over the next five years now has more than 410,000 signatures, and will be delivered on Tuesday (tomorrow).

I would like to arrive at the Navy offices with 500,000 names of people who are asking for this to change. Can you share my petition and ask your friends and family who have not yet signed to add their names?

Yes, I'll post on Facebook right now, asking my friends to sign!

I'm not on Facebook, but I'll share the petition a different way.

Even if you've shared already, please share again. Or you can forward the note below to your friends via email.

Thank you a million times over.

Subject: Navy to kill 1,800 whales and dolphins? And deafen 15,900 more?

According to the U.S. Navy's own estimates, the use of high-frequency underwater sound for testing in Hawaii, off the California and Atlantic Coasts, and in the Gulf of Mexico will deafen 15,900 whales and dolphins and kill 1,800 more over the next five years.

Whales and dolphins depend on sound to navigate and live. The Navy is required to include comments from the public on their Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Your signature and comment on this petition could help stop this naval program and save the lives of these ocean creatures. But there's a deadline of July 10, so we need to hurry.

The petition says:

Stop the killing of 1,800 whales and dolphins and the deafening of 15,900 more by ceasing the operation of the Navy's underwater sound system in the Hawaiian Islands, the California and Atlantic Coasts, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Have an idea for a petition?

Dear MoveOn member,

Have you ever heard the story of how MoveOn started? In 1998, when Newt Gingrich and the Republicans in Congress were focusing all of their efforts on impeaching President Clinton over a sex scandal, we started a simple online petition: "Censure President Clinton and Move On to Pressing Issues Facing the Nation."

We had no past political experience, but we felt passionately about our message and shared the petition with as many of our friends as we could think of. Within days, the petition went viral, and we had hundreds of thousands of signatures. And from the list of people who signed that original petition grew MoveOn.org—an organization of 7 million members and a powerful progressive force in American politics.

Because we've seen firsthand how regular people can make a difference, we're thrilled that MoveOn has launched a website called SignOn.org where anyone can start their own online petitions. MoveOn will even email out the most popular petitions to help build support for your cause—and as always we'll never ever sell your personal information to anyone.

Click here to start your own petition on SignOn.org right now.

As always, thanks for all you do.

Here's a sample message to send to your friends:

Hi,

The Navy is required to include comments on their Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) re: the use of high frequency underwater sound for testing in Hawaii, the California and Atlantic Coasts, and the Gulf of Mexico. According to their estimates it will deafen more than 15,900 whales and dolphins and kill 1,800 more over the next 5 years. Whales and dolphins depend on sound to navigate and live. Your signature and comment will have to be included in the EIS and could stop this Naval program, potentially saving the lives of these ocean creatures. The comments must be in by July 10, 2012.

So I created a petition to U.S. Navy EIS Comments, which says:

Stop the killing of 1,800 whales and dolphins and the deafening of 15,900 more by ceasing the operation of the Navy's underwater sound system in the Hawaiian Islands, the California and Atlantic Coasts, and the Gulf of Mexico.
