If Romney pulls ahead and you start to panic ...

Hi, MoveOn member. I hope that you, your family, and friends are all safe and well, and are recovering quickly from the impacts of Hurricane Sandy. In addition to the disruption in many of our lives, the storm has disrupted get-out-the-vote operations in some critical states, but we're doing all we can to respond. Please check out the email below—and take care.

–Justin

We have six days left to do everything we can to keep Mitt Romney out of the White House. This is the last possible moment when a donation can support the largest independent voter turnout operation in the country and help reelect President Obama.

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

If there's any part of you that thinks you might donate a little something (or chip in a little more) to help win the presidential election, well...Now. Is. The. Time.

Seriously—this is it. If Romney pulls ahead in the polls later this week and you start to panic, it will simply be too late for us to change our plans in any meaningful way.

Every analysis says this election is basically tied and will come down to voter turnout. And we need to raise $350,000 more to fund our final get out-the-vote push.

If you really truly can't afford to give at this point—we understand. But if you can chip in $5 today and you don't, and then Mitt Romney barely wins...you won't be able to live with yourself.

This is it. Can you chip in $5 right now?

Yes, I can contribute $5.

For those of us who do our taxes on April 14th, or buy Christmas presents on ... Christmas, let me be even more clear—GOOD INTENTIONS ARE NOT ENOUGH. MITT ROMNEY COULD WIN. NEXT WEEK WILL BE TOO LATE.

Donations in the next 24 hours are critical. And here's why it matters:

  • We're still making final decisions about how many voters we can afford to reach out to using the new voter turnout method we pioneered! More money = more votes.
  • There are always a bunch of urgent last-minute needs that crop up in a massive get-out-the-vote operation. In a tight race, they can make all the difference. We need to be in a position to meet those needs.

Please help!

Can you contribute $5 before it's too late?

Thanks for all you do.

Who do Inwood progressives recommend?

Check out the Inwood Progressive Ballot Guide to find out which candidate is the choice of local progressives and why.

Check it out!

Dear MoveOn member,

Over the past week, progressives in Inwood have been compiling information about the upcoming election. They've collectively made a Progressive Ballot Guide that recommends candidates that share their values.

If you don't know who you're voting for, even in one race, then the Ballot Guide is for you.

Click here to view the Ballot Guide and see the recommendations of other progressives in your area. Then share it with your friends.

It's important for progressives to be informed about all races, but we don't all have time to research every race. That's where the Progressive Ballot Guide comes in—it's like having a politically involved friend let you know which candidate is the choice of local progressives, as well as why.

Will you check out the Ballot Guide and share it with your friends?

Thought about hosting a call party?

Dear MoveOn member,

Have you considered hosting a 10 Days to Win call party to help this election? We need a party in Inwood so that MoveOn members in the area have a place to call from.

Unless we throw 1,000 parties between now and election day, thousands of potential swing state volunteers won't get a recruitment call. With 17 days until Election Day and a razor close race, your party can help tip the balance by making sure we don't leave any volunteers behind. Can you host?

Click here to sign up to host call party on Oct. 27 or 28.

For more on how fun and easy it is to throw a party, check out the email below from Stacey H. of Atlanta, who's already hosted three parties and is looking forward to one more!

Thanks for all you do.

–Amy and the rest of the team

The election is tightening up, and we need more volunteers to tip the balance for President Obama. Can you host a call party in Inwood?

Host on Oct. 27 or 28!

Dear MoveOn member,

My name's Stacey H., and I'm a die-hard MoveOn member here in Atlanta, GA. I'm writing to ask you to help win this election.

This election is personal for me. My children are burdened with college debt. My husband is a government employee and union member, and I'm struggling to find work in a housing industry that has collapsed. We're the type of family Romney's policies would hurt.

I'm terrified because the race is basically a toss-up, and a new Gallup/USA Today poll has Romney closing the gap in swing states like Ohio, even among female voters!1

My state is pretty red, but I'm not sitting on the sidelines. I'm on a mission to re-elect President Obama by hosting call parties to help us win in the purple states—Florida, Nevada, Ohio, and others. I've already hosted three parties, and in less than 6 hours of total time, we recruited enough swing state volunteers to fill two campaign offices to the brim—enough to reach upwards of 4,000 voters before Election Day.

If all of us do the same, we'll contact enough voters to tip the balance. So I'm counting on you and fellow MoveOn members to step up for the final stretch by hosting your own party. Next weekend, MoveOn members are throwing hundreds of 10 Days to Win call parties, but there aren't enough parties planned yet. We need a party in Inwood—can you host?

Click here to sign up to host a 10 Days to Win call party on Oct. 27 or 28.

I love it when our party is buzzing with dozens of conversations about what's at stake this election—this is what democracy looks like. We're doing all we can in Atlanta to help turn out voters in battleground states, and I know we're not alone—7 million MoveOn members are fighting for my family and every family in need of a better economy, not Romney's trickle-down approach.

Hosting a call party is as simple as planning a get-together with friends, and they're so worth it. The camaraderie is good for the soul, and we always leave more fired up than when we came in the door. I make it fun by giving the guest who makes the most calls a "top call crown," and when we get a "yes!" on the phone, we ring the party bell and cheer each other on.

We need a party in Inwood to make sure campaign offices in swing states are at capacity for the sprint to November 6. I've gotten all the support and materials I've needed to throw great parties to help me multiply my impact. Can you pitch in and host a party on October 27 or 28?

Click here to sign up to host a 10 Days to Win call party on Oct. 27 or 28.

Thanks for all you do.

Our ad with Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria, and Kerry Washington

Dear MoveOn member,

A Romney/Ryan administration would eviscerate women's rights. We'd be talking about getting rid of abortion, birth control, access to healthcare screenings. As a husband, son, and father, I can't stand by and let this happen.

That's why my wife, Michele, and I teamed up with Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria, and Kerry Washington to make a powerful TV ad letting women voters across the country know the dangers of a Romney presidency.

More than 14,000 of your fellow MoveOn members donated to help get it on the air in key swing states. But I also hear that MoveOn members have one of the best distribution networks in the country.

And that's YOU, sharing the ad with the people you know on Facebook, Twitter, and by email. So help get this ad in front of millions more voters who care about women's rights and health by sharing it with everyone you know.

Thank you.

No cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid

Below is an email from U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and Social Security Works, who created a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

"NO benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. NO tax cuts for the top 2%."

Sign the Petition!

Dear New York MoveOn member,

In the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, Wall Street and corporate America and virtually all Republicans are working on a deficit reduction plan to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, while lowering tax rates for the wealthy and large corporations. Sadly, some Democrats are also engaged in this effort. This plan is likely to come up during the lame duck session of Congress after the elections.

The idea of balancing the budget on the backs of some of the most vulnerable people in our country—the elderly, the children, the sick and the poor—is not only morally grotesque, it is extremely bad economics. We must vigorously oppose this plan.

Add your name to my petition on SignOn.org opposing any benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid.

As you know, the large deficit that we are now experiencing was primarily caused during the Bush years by two unpaid for wars, huge tax breaks for the rich and a prescription drug program written by the insurance and drug companies. Further, as a result of the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior on Wall Street which drove us into this terrible recession, revenue at 15.2 percent of GDP is the lowest in 60 years.

In order to cover the cost of the unpaid-for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they want to make significant cuts to Social Security that will affect not only seniors but disabled veterans. They want to do this despite the fact that Social Security is funded by the payroll tax, has not added a penny to the deficit and has a $2.7 trillion surplus.

Join me in opposing any benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid.

In order to cover the cost of tax breaks given to millionaires and billionaires, they want to increase the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67 and throw millions of families with children off of Medicaid.

At a time when the United States has the most unequal distribution of wealth and income of any major country and the gap between the very rich and everyone else is growing wider, their deficit-reduction plan calls for lowering the top tax rates for the rich and large corporations to 28 percent or even lower.

There are fair and sensible ways to reduce deficits, but having the rich and the powerful beat up on working families and the elderly is not one of them.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thank you,

–Bernie Sanders, United States Senator

Debate tomorrow

Dear MoveOn member,

Romney lied his way to a poll bounce in the first debate and now the presidential race is looking like a dead heat—and there are just two more debates to go. So it's more important than ever that everyone tune in and help spread the truth during Tuesday night's town hall presidential debate.

Mitt Romney told 27 lies in 38 minutes in the first debate.1 Will he try to beat his own record tomorrow night? Join the MoveOn Truth Squad to find out and take action! Our website will once again be transformed into fact-check central, with a live stream of the debate and instant access to fact checks from our expert allies that you'll be able to share straight from the site on social media

You'll have the power to influence your social networks and the media by sharing the truth about Romney's lies. Dig in for the MoveOn Truth Squad again tomorrow night and be sure to get your friends involved, too!

Get your friends to join you in the MoveOn Truth Squad during the debate tomorrow starting at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Joe Biden got fired up in last week's vice-presidential debate and called out Paul Ryan on his lies and inconsistencies. We need to make sure that Mitt Romney doesn't get away with lying again either. So hop onto MoveOn.org starting at 8:30 p.m. ET tomorrow night, and join the conversation on Facebook, and tweet with the hashtags #MittLies and #DebateWatch. We'll retweet the best tweets and show them on the site.

Ask your friends to join you!

Thanks for all you do.

Inwood Progressive Ballot Guide

Share your choices for the election on November 6 in Inwood in our new Progressive Ballot Guide for local elections. And if you're undecided in some races, see who other progressives are voting for!

Vote now!

Dear New York MoveOn member,

There's an election coming up on November 6 in Inwood—do you know who you're voting for?

For big-ticket races, the answer may be yes, but in a down-ballot or nonpartisan race, many people may know little about the candidates, or it may be difficult to tell who the progressive candidate is.

That's why we've built a Progressive Ballot Guide that lets MoveOn members and other local progressives educate each other about the candidates in a race.

The concept is simple: If you are planning to vote for a specific candidate, let us know. If you're still undecided, that's fine too—you can use the ballot guide to see the reasons why other progressives voted the way they did.

Click here to tell us who you're voting for and share the reasons why, or see how other progressives are voting.

Even if you have no idea who you're voting for in any race, or have an opinion in one or two races, you should still check out the ballot guide. After you vote, you'll be able to see other progressives' thoughts on the candidates running for office in your area.

A local official can influence policy much more directly than Congress or the president. Tea party Republicans know this, and they've been making focused efforts to win state and local elections so they can further their radical agenda.

That's why it's so important to make sure progressive voters know the facts when they go to vote. And that's why we're making a ballot guide, created by local folks, to help get that information out. We'll send out the completed guide, compiling all the recommendations we receive, in a few days. But to get started, we need to hear from you.

Can you tell us what progressives you support?

http://progressiveballot.org/ballotguide/recommend.html?id=54736-10220574-nyoa_4x&t=3

Thanks for all you do.

Can you match Biden's performance?

Dear MoveOn member,

Did you see Joe Biden absolutely handle Paul Ryan last night? Joe delivered EXACTLY what voters needed to hear—the unvarnished truth about Romney's policies.

With national polls showing Romney either leading or closing the gap with President Obama, we need to shift the momentum. You can help this weekend by enlisting MoveOn members in swing states to talk to undecided voters and present them with the facts, just like Vice President Biden did last night.

MoveOn member Leah M. is hosting a call party in Brooklyn on Sunday and needs members like you to help make calls. Can you make it?

Here are the details:

What: Every Voter Counts call party

Host: Leah M.

Where: Lefferts Garden, Brooklyn (in Brooklyn)

When: Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at 3:00 PM

I can't, but let me know what else I can do.

At an Every Voter Counts call party, you'll call fellow MoveOn members in swing states and sign them up to talk with voters. It's a fun way to make a difference this election, and we need to pounce on the momentum from last night's debate. Can you make it on Sunday?

Click here to RSVP right now so the host can print your call sheets.

Thanks for all you do.

Call out Lyin' Ryan with the MoveOn Truth Squad

Dear MoveOn member,

Thanks for joining the MoveOn Truth Squad for the first presidential debate last week. Now we have another chance to do some serious fact-checking! The vice-presidential debate is tomorrow, and MoveOn.org will once again be transformed into fact-check central starting at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.

Paul Ryan could put Pinocchio to shame. He told so many lies in his convention speech that #LyinRyan was trending on Twitter afterward. If his debate performance is anything like that, he'll be spouting lies a mile a minute—faster than any one person can count. That's why we need all hands on deck to counter Lyin' Ryan's egregious lies.

We've all seen how important a debate can be. So be part of the MoveOn Truth Squad again tomorrow night and be sure to get your friends involved, too!

Get your friends to join you in the MoveOn Truth Squad and call out Lyin' Ryan during the debate tomorrow starting at 8:30 p.m. ET.

MoveOn members played a crucial role in getting the truth out about the 27 lies that Romney told in 38 minutes during the first presidential debate.1 Members shared facts on Twitter and Facebook, and spread the word to friends and neighbors.

Tomorrow we'll have to work even harder. Paul Ryan may outdo Romney with his lies. So let's make #LyinRyan trend again by calling out every lie that Ryan tells! We'll retweet the best tweets and show them on the site. And, like last time, MoveOn's Debate Dashboard will be your one-stop shop for the best share graphics, a live stream of the debate, and all of the latest facts from expert fact-checkers. But we need even more people on board to spread the truth, so share this with your friends.

Spread the truth about Lyin' Ryan tomorrow—and ask your friends to join you.

Thanks for all you do.

Scarlett Johansson & Rob Reiner

Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria, and Kerry Washington made a powerful new ad to warn American women about Mitt Romney. Chip in to get it on TV in swing states and help get Obama back his election-winning lead with women voters.

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

We have an awesome opportunity to air an ad that Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria, and Kerry Washington have just made for us with director Rob Reiner, reminding American women of the terrible consequences of a Romney presidency.

We just saw the first cut, and it's amazing. If we raise $400,000, we can air it in key swing states during TV shows with high female viewership in these last crucial days before the election.

A new poll suggests that, since the disastrous debate, Obama's 18-point lead among women has virtually disappeared.1 But this ad has the power to remind viewers of what their votes really mean for the future of women in America.

Can you help get it on the air?

Yes, I can contribute $5.

There are huge stars in the ad. But MoveOn is a grassroots-funded organization, so no millionaires will pay for this ad buy. And you know what? To show the media that this isn't another billionaire-backed, Super PAC ad, our goal is to fund this with the help of more than 10,000 everyday women and men—Americans who care about equal pay, choice, and funding vital Planned Parenthood services.

It's been a month since the media seriously paid attention to Romney's terrible policies on women, but we haven't forgotten:

  • He called Roe v. Wade "one of the darkest moments in Supreme Court history," and he could be appointing up to three Supreme Court justices.2
  • He would "get rid" of Planned Parenthood, let employers decide a woman's contraception coverage, and let insurance companies charge women more.3
  • He chose Paul Ryan as his running mate—a radically anti-choice congressman who teamed up with Todd Akin to try to redefine rape so that he could limit a woman's right to choose.4

And now the latest Pew Research Poll has Romney ahead of Obama 49% to 45% among likely voters. And much of the reversal of fortune is thanks to a seismic shift in the women's vote toward Romney.5

But we've got a way to help get the president's lead back with women voters. And it means we'll need thousands of members like you, teaming up with Rob Reiner, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria, and Kerry Washington to remind women voters which candidate really has their backs.

Yes, I can contribute $5 to show this ad to swing state women.

Thanks for all you do.

BREAKING: Bad news from Ohio

Two new polls this weekend have Sen. Sherrod Brown losing ground to his opponent thanks to tens of millions of dollars in outside attack ads. We cannot let Sherrod—one of the most progressive members of the Senate—lose. Can you chip in to help him fight back?

Donate $5
Dear MoveOn member,

There's breaking news from Ohio. And it's not good.

For months, shady outside groups have flooded the Ohio airwaves with almost $20 million in ads targeting Sen. Sherrod Brown.1

And for months, he's withstood the onslaught, holding on to a six or seven-point lead.2

But this weekend, two new polls came out—one showing a tied race and the other showing Sherrod down four.3

This is, in a word, unacceptable.

Sherrod Brown is a fearless fighter for working people who has taken Wall Street head on, and now he's paying the price. We can't let Karl Rove and his big money backers win this one. We cannot let it happen. Can you donate to make sure we keep Sherrod in the Senate?

Senator Brown isn't the only progressive who's facing an onslaught of big money this year.

In Wisconsin, conservative Super PACs are hitting Tammy Baldwin after polls show her taking a small lead over her opponent.4 Tammy's another great progressive, who led the fight in the House for the Buffett Rule—to make millionaires pay their fair share.5 Her opponent, Tommy Thompson, on the other hand, has spent years working for a D.C. lobbying firm fighting for special interests.

In Connecticut, it's not outside money that's the problem. It's Republican Linda McMahon's almost unlimited personal wealth. She spent $50 million on her failed Senate bid in 2010 and has already spent more than $13 million this year.6 But Chris Murphy's values—fighting for campaign finance reform and quality health care—are much more in line with Connecticut's voters', and he's opened a small lead.

These are races we have to win. But Tammy, Sherrod, and Chris need our help.

Fight Mitt's lies: Host a party next weekend?

We need more swing state volunteers to tell voters the truth about Romney. We're throwing Every Voter Counts call parties to recruit thousands of volunteers to help. We need a party in Inwood—can you host one on Oct. 13 or 14?

Host a Party!

Dear MoveOn member,

"People were truly misinformed and confused by all the lies they have heard."

That's what Kyara, a MoveOn member in Wisconsin, reported after talking to voters in her area. Thankfully, Kyara reached her neighbors with the facts.

But more than 70 million people heard Romney's lies during the debate, and since he lied so convincingly, they could stick.1 That's why we need more volunteers, like Kyara, armed with the facts to talk to voters in swing states.

Kyara was talking to voters because a fellow MoveOn member—calling from another state—called to let her know when and where to volunteer.

We're throwing call parties to get more volunteers for the final stretch, and we need a party in Inwood. You've taken action before, can you host an Every Voter Counts call party next Saturday or Sunday, October 13 or 14?

Yes, I can host a party!

I can't, but let me know what else I can do.

In a single weekend of call parties, we'll mobilize thousands of new volunteers to knock on doors and make calls to help re-elect President Obama. Unless they talk to a MoveOn volunteer, these voters might not vote or, worse yet, cast a ballot for Romney.

Every volunteer we recruit means more votes for Obama, and call parties are an effective way to get thousands of new volunteers quickly. There are hundreds of Every Voter Counts parties already planned, but we need a party in Inwood to have a bigger impact on Election Day.

Can you host a call party next Saturday or Sunday, October 13 or 14?

Yes, I can host a party!

I can't, but let me know what else I can do.

Thanks for all you do.

Re: That was infuriating

Hi—I wanted to make sure you saw our note from just after the debate. This is an incredible opportunity, and every dollar counts! Can you chip in $5?

The debate this week was a big win for Romney—unless voters understand all his lies. Chip in $5 to fact-check Mitt's worst lies with voters in swing states.

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

That was infuriating.

During this week's presidential debate, Mitt Romney smirked his way through dozens of mischaracterizations, distortions, and outright lies. The moderator, Jim Lehrer, never cut him off. And now the mainstream media is saying that Mitt won the debate.

We can't let Romney "win" the debate on a boatload of lies.

He lied about his tax plan, his deficit plan, and Medicare. He lied about what "Obamacare" would do. He lied, baldly and convincingly, about Obama's entire presidency.1

We need to move quickly to set the record straight. Our online team has been working day and night since the debate preparing a media blitz—including online ads targeted at swing-state voters—correcting the worst lies in an easy-to-share format.

Chip in $5 to get the truth out—countering Mitt's lies.

If we don't fight back now with the truth, some of those lies will stick, and Romney could pull ahead.

Already, Romney and his Super PAC friends have spent millions on blatantly false ads attacking President Obama for gutting work requirements for welfare and cutting $700 billion from Medicare.

Wednesday night was more of the same.

And research shows that when lies get repeated enough times people will believe them—no matter how outlandish they might seem. The only way to keep Romney honest is to make sure the facts get corrected on the spot.

We're now in the moment when millions of undecided voters who don't usually pay attention to politics start to focus.

This is it. This is what MoveOn's massive online network is for. Let's use it.

Please chip in $5.

Thanks for all you do.
