Should MoveOn support this petition?

Dear MoveOn member,

A MoveOn member named UU Service Committee recently created a petition on our public petition website entitled "No More Flints"–and we'd like to know what you think of it.

The petition is addressed to GIna McCarthy, EPA Administrator, and reads:

Everyone deserves safe, affordable water. And the EPA has the power to help prevent future disasters like Flint. Tell the EPA: ensure access to safe, affordable drinking water and adequate sanitation.

Sign UU's petition.

Here's what UU wrote about it:

Right now, in this country, parents are facing a decision between paying for safe drinking water or putting food on the table.

In the wake of the Flint lead poisoning disaster, we need to ask ourselves and our elected officials: how can we let this happen? Today, one in five U.S. families are forced to spend more than they can afford on water. Black and Latino communities are often hit hardest by these staggering expenses — and even at these outrageous prices, that water isn't necessarily safe.

The Obama Administration has an opportunity to change that, making access to safe, affordable drinking water and adequate sanitation a key part of its Climate Action Plan. A climate action plan without that is simply not comprehensive or just. But they won't do it unless they hear from us.

Can you click to let us know what you think?

I want to sign this petition.

I don't think MoveOn should support this petition.

We'll decide whether to send this petition out to additional MoveOn members in your area based on your feedback.

In case you haven't heard about it, MoveOn's petition site allows anyone to start an online petition and share it with friends and neighbors to build support for their cause.

Thanks for all you do.

Bernie’s political revolution (let’s bring it to Congress!)

Imagine a political revolution large enough and powerful enough to take this country back from the billionaire class.

Dear MoveOn member,

Bernie Sanders has the audacity to dream big—to fight for a country where “nobody who works 40 hours a week lives in poverty, health care is a right for all Americans, kids of all backgrounds can go to college without crushing debt, there is no bank too big to fail, no banker too powerful to jail, and we've reclaimed our democracy from the billionaire class.”

Imagine that. It’s a political revolution—one large enough and powerful enough to take this country back from the billionaire class.

But here’s the thing: No matter who wins the White House this November, no one person can build the movement we need to succeed. We need millions of Americans to do it. And we also need progressive champions in Congress.

Will you help fuel the political revolution by chipping in $2.70 to elect three MoveOn-endorsed progressive congressional candidates: Lucy Flores, Pramila Jayapal, and Zephyr Teachout? The deadline is midnight TONIGHT, so your support is needed now.

Click here to grow Bernie's political revolution by supporting these three candidates before the midnight FEC filing deadline.

From pioneering small-dollar grassroots fundraising on Howard Dean's presidential campaign, challenging New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and working to get big money out of politics, Zephyr Teachout has been a lifelong champion of fixing our broken, money-driven political system.

After coming to the United States from India at age 16, Pramila Jayapal has become a Seattle assemblywoman who represents one of the nation’s most racially and economically diverse districts. Jayapal has helped pass both the $15 minimum wage and paid sick days in Seattle, and she spent two decades as a leading civil rights activist, defending the rights of Muslims and Arabs after 9/11.

The 34-year-old daughter of Mexican immigrants, Lucy Flores is the first Latina assemblywoman in Nevada. After a tough childhood growing up in a family of 13 children, Flores got her GED and went on to pass legislation to protect consumers from predatory practices and shield victims of domestic violence from abusers. Today she’s running for Congress in Nevada’s 4th District.

These three candidates need our help to face down corporate Democrats in their primaries and win tough general elections. And we'll need their help to face down corporate Democrats and right-wing Republicans in the House of Representatives.

With a midnight FEC deadline, now is the time to show momentum.

Click here to chip in $2.70 before midnight tonight, and help build Bernie's political revolution from the bottom up.

Bernie’s political revolution relies on millions of volunteers and supporters—ordinary Americans chipping in what they can—with an average donation of just $27. But if our movement supports only Bernie, we’re missing the point. It’s not about him; it’s about us. Together.

Like Bernie Sanders, these three candidates are ready to fight for the revolutionary ideas America needs.

Like Bernie Sanders, these candidates stand up to Wall Street and big money—and fight for the little guy (and gal).

Like Bernie Sanders, these progressive champs can get elected only if huge numbers of us contribute small money.

And with a midnight FEC deadline, now is the time to show momentum.

Will you chip in $2.70 and help make sure this slate of Bernie Sanders-style political revolutionaries makes it to Congress?

Click here by midnight, if you can.

The leader of the next political revolution won’t just appear from nowhere. She needs your support now, today.

So think of your donation as an investment in the long-term health of the progressive movement. Each progressive we elect helps get us closer to that bold vision that Bernie Sanders outlined. We won’t get there overnight. But with your help, we will change America.

Thanks for all you do.

Eddie, join Elizabeth Warren this Monday night

Senator Warren will talk to MoveOn members about the fight to fill the Supreme Court vacancy.

Dear MoveOn member,

With so much riding on our ability to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy, I’m excited to invite you to a special call with Senator Elizabeth Warren this Monday night to discuss what's at stake in this fight and how progressives can end Republican obstructionism and fill the seat before it's too late.

MoveOn's national conference call with Sen. Warren is this Monday, April 4, at 8 p.m. ET (7 CT/6 MT/5 PT).

RSVP now to reserve a spot. On Monday, you'll receive a call at the number you provided to connect you to the conference call with Sen. Warren.

After weeks of public outcry over Senate Republicans' outright refusal to consider any President Obama nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, we’re starting to see cracks in the GOP’s unified opposition. Sixteen Republican senators have now said they'd meet with Judge Merrick Garland—and several have said Judge Garland's nomination should receive hearings and a vote.1 We’re making progress.

But time is running out. Conventional wisdom says that if there aren't hearings by summer, Republicans will be able to drag this out through the election—which means we need to break the Republican chokehold in the next eight weeks if we want to see this seat filled.

On Monday night, Sen. Warren will talk about what it's going to take to fill the seat. Will you join us on the conference call to be a part of the discussion and learn how you can help?

Yes, I’ll RSVP now to join the call with Sen. Warren.

So much is at stake in this fight. If we win and fill the seat, justices appointed by Democratic presidents would hold a majority on the Supreme Court for the first time in four decades.2 We could reverse Citizens United, stop states from closing abortion clinics, restore voting rights, and so much more. We’d affect the fundamental direction of the Court not for a year or two but possibly for a generation.

That's why Elizabeth Warren is joining us and members of many other progressive organizations in this massive campaign. And we know we can break Republican obstructionism—we've done it before, in the fall of 2013, when we forced Republicans to end the government shutdown. Now we need to do it again.

Please join us for a special conference call with Elizabeth Warren on Monday, April 4, at 8 p.m. ET to talk and strategize about what it's going to take to break the GOP blockade of the Supreme Court.

Click here to RSVP. (It's easy to sign up. And you'll receive a phone call at the number you provided when our call is about to begin.)

Thanks for all you do.

Tell Congress: We deserve to know. Label GMO food!

We've won round one! In a first vote, the U.S. Senate failed to advance the DARK Act. But the lobbyists for Big Ag aren't going away. Let's keep up the pressure.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley with an important update: We've won round one! In a first vote, the U.S. Senate failed to advance the DARK Act.1 But the lobbyists for Big Ag aren't going away. Let's keep up the pressure—consumers deserve to know what's in their food. Click here to sign the petition to the United States Senate, which says:

Congress has a choice to make. Either do the bidding of Big Ag and keep consumers in the dark about genetically modified food, or do what American consumers demand and require clear labeling of GMOs.

Do the right thing. Don't leave us in the dark. REJECT the DARK Act. PASS the Biotechnology Food Labeling and Uniformity Act and shine a light on GMOs in our food!

The U.S. Senate just voted against what is known as the Big Ag-supported DARK Act, which would prohibit states from requiring labeling of genetically modified foods.

Now the Senate has another choice, one that would put in place a national standard that requires labeling of foods containing GMOs. It's called the Biotechnology Food Labeling and Uniformity Act, and it needs your support.

This is our chance to stand up to Big Ag and bring GMO labeling to all 50 states, but time is running out.

Add your name right away!

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Official vote (Donald Trump)

Should MoveOn launch a major campaign to show that our country rejects Donald Trump's hate-baiting, racism, misogyny, and violence?

Dear MoveOn member,

As Donald Trump barrels toward the Republican nomination for president—and potentially toward the White House—we're forced to recognize that it may take a major campaign to do what his Republican rivals could not: stop him before it's too late.

That's why we need to hear from you.

Should MoveOn launch a major campaign to show that our country rejects Donald Trump’s hate-baiting, racism, misogyny, and violence—including, if necessary, starting a Super PAC to allow us to have the funds needed to run ads, hire organizers, reach millions of voters, and more, that would be used only for the general election? Voting starts now and closes at 9 a.m. ET (8 CT/7 MT/6 PT) this Saturday, April 2. Cast your official ballot by clicking below:

Yes, MoveOn should launch such a campaign.

No, MoveOn should not launch such a campaign.

Earlier this month, MoveOn's executive directors joined leaders of civil rights, women's rights, labor, environmental, and other progressive organizations in calling for mass nonviolent mobilization to stop Donald Trump and push back against the hatred and violence unleashed by his campaign.1 Now, we're turning that letter into action by asking you, as a MoveOn member, to consider the inclusive, multifaceted campaign such a moment requires.

This work would require reaching and mobilizing new voters, supporting communities most impacted by Trump's hate-baiting, running creative ads, hiring organizers, challenging elected officials and corporate leaders who prop up Trump, educating ourselves and our neighbors about our shared history that has enabled Trump's rise, and so much more. In short, it would be a massive undertaking—and would require every asset we can bring to it, potentially including a Super PAC to allow us to ramp up quickly before it's too late.

At every key decision, MoveOn members like you drive our work together.

Yes.

No.

Again, voting will remain open until 9 a.m. ET (8 CT/7 MT/6 PT) this Saturday, April 2. All MoveOn members are receiving this email and are eligible to vote. This ballot is non-transferable and unique to you. Only your first click will be recorded, so please take care in making your choice.

We would run this campaign at the same time that we continue to organize and fight for Bernie Sanders to win the Democratic nomination, a campaign launched when MoveOn members voted overwhelmingly in January to endorse Bernie in the Democratic presidential primary. That's because MoveOn members know that Bernie is the best candidate to take on Donald Trump in a general election, should Trump win the Republican nomination. And we'd continue fighting for the Supreme Court and other campaigns MoveOn members care deeply about.

Thanks for all you do.

Stand up for democracy

Dear MoveOn Member,

We are in the midst of a deeply contentious election cycle—as laws that make it harder for Americans to vote proliferate across the country and the undercurrent of money in politics often drowns out the voices of voters.  It’s why we fight so hard for voting rights and against the influence of Big Money. And it’s why we are joining with a group of organizations and activists this spring in a series of actions in Washington, D.C., designed to shore up our democracy.

This April, thousands of people from across the country are converging in our nation’s capital to demand action from Congress to protect voting rights, get Big Money out of politics, and hold a vote on a Supreme Court nominee.

These people-powered events will kick off on April 2 with Democracy Spring—a 10-day, 140-mile march from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to the Capitol in Washington, followed by peaceful, legal actions in the nation's capital.

This week of action will build toward Democracy Awakeningwhich kicks off on Saturday, April 16 with teach-ins, concerts, and cultural events, followed by a momentous Rally and March for Democracy at the Capitol on Sunday, April 17.

Click here if you are interested in participating April 2-11.

Click here if you are interested in participating April 16-18.

Together, as progressives, we will demand that Congress do its job to protect people’s right to vote, get Big Money out of politics, and hold a vote on a Supreme Court nominee. MoveOn members are familiar with these fights. Hundreds of thousands of us have signed petitions to overturn Citizens United and to call on President Obama to pass an executive order to shine a light on dark money in politics. MoveOn members have invested in campaigns to defend voting rights from attacks across the country. And we will continue to support candidates who champion these issues.

These two mobilizations—led by terrific progressive partners and bringing together thousands of regular Americans from all walks of life and all parts of the country—offer another opportunity for MoveOn members to make sure reclaiming our democracy is at the heart of the conversation this election year.

Thanks for all you do.

Political extremism in Wisconsin

I can think of no better place for our political revolution to continue its momentum than in Wisconsin. The latest poll has us down just a few points, and I know that if we work together right now, we can pull off a huge victory.

Eddie—

When our campaign first set foot in Wisconsin this past summer, we got a very warm welcome from the people of Wisconsin. I spoke to more than 10,000 people in Madison about our corrupt political system, our broken economy, and how our political revolution can take back our country from people like the Koch brothers and the billionaire class.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and the Republican party weren't as happy to see me. Gov. Walker, who has been helped throughout his career by the Koch brothers, issued statements against us, and the GOP even put up billboards calling me an "extremist."

Well, let's talk about extremism. Scott Walker has attacked the minimum wage, gutted unions, made it much harder to vote, and restricted access to abortion. That is extremism.

I can think of no better place for our political revolution to continue its momentum than in Wisconsin. The latest poll has us down just a few points, and I know that if we work together right now, we can pull off a huge victory.

With a huge FEC fundraising deadline on Thursday at midnight, there has not been a more important time for you to support our campaign.

Click here to make a $2.70 contribution to our campaign and MoveOn's efforts to help us win before Thursday night's deadline—and we can shock the political establishment with a victory in Wisconsin.

Not only has Governor Walker been helped throughout his career by huge financial support from the Koch Brothers, but he has enacted their ideology while in office.

When you deny the right of workers to come together in collective bargaining, that's extremism.

When you tell a woman that she cannot control her own body, that's extremism.

When you give tax breaks to billionaires and refuse to raise the minimum wage, that's extremism.

Our views, which represent the views of the vast majority of the American people, are different. We believe that the time has come for the people of Wisconsin and all over the country to create a movement that tells the billionaire class: YOU CAN'T HAVE IT ALL!

And what we are saying to the Koch brothers and Scott Walker is that this great country belongs to everybody, and not just a handful of very wealthy people.

Contribute $2.70 to our campaign and MoveOn right now to say you stand with our political revolution—and help us win in Wisconsin next week.

When the people stand together against the Koch Brothers and the billionaire class, we can win.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders

Bernie, MoveOn, and me

I'm so proud to have MoveOn's endorsement, and I'm proud to stand with another strong progressive who MoveOn is backing for president—Bernie Sanders.

MoveOn for Bernie

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Yesterday, MoveOn members in Washington state’s 7th Congressional District voted to endorse my campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives, with a vote of 69% in a three-way race.

I’m so proud to have MoveOn’s endorsement, and I’m proud to stand with another strong progressive who MoveOn is backing for president—Bernie Sanders.

I endorsed Bernie because I’ve lived the American dream that he has spent his life fighting to give all Americans a shot at. At age 16, I came to the United States from India by myself because my parents believed that in the United States I would get the best education and have the brightest future. They were right. Since then I’ve devoted my life to fighting for others to have the opportunities they need to achieve their own dreams—including standing up for Arabs, Muslims, and Sikhs after 9/11 when few people would.

Yet despite the opportunities this country has given me, our system remains rigged to keep everything working well for the top 1% while the other 99% struggle. Bernie Sanders speaks truth to power about these systematic failures. He gets the connection between large corporations, elections, and income inequality, and understands the deep problems with our criminal justice system and civil liberties abuses.

That's why I'm asking you and MoveOn members across the country to join me and volunteer for Bernie this weekend as we head into the Washington caucuses on Saturday—because every call made, every door knocked on, and every conversation held is critical right now. You can click here to find a place to volunteer near you.

Can't volunteer in person? Click here to make calls to voters from your home.

We need movement builders like Bernie Sanders who understand that our role as elected officials is not only to pass good policy or stop bad policy, but to be the bridge between government and the people. With his political revolution, Bernie Sanders has inspired hope in a whole new generation of activists young and old.

And we’re going to need everyone if we’re going to take on the biggest challenges we’re facing today. People like Donald Trump are whipping up hate and fear across the country, resulting in a rise in anti-Muslim violence. Planned Parenthood is under attack, and corporate and special interests have huge influence in Congress. I’m inspired by the way that Bernie Sanders is fighting to take on the powerful and figure out real solutions, organizing both in the halls of the Capitol and in the streets all over America.

Bernie’s candidacy isn’t just about himit’s about all of us working together to build the movement we need, powered by the grassroots energy of working and middle-class people like us.

Bernie’s vision is one that’s inspired me, and I hope you'll join me and sign up to volunteer for Bernie Sanders this weekend.

Thank you,

Pramila Jayapal
Candidate for U.S. House
Washington’s 7th District

Dept. of Justice: Investigate Arizona voter suppression

What happened in Arizona's election on Tuesday is unacceptable. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has asked for the DOJ to investigate this voter supression. Now it's our turn to keep up the pressure.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Laura Packard, a fellow MoveOn member, and I started a petition to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, which says:

In Maricopa County, Arizona, the number of polling places was reduced from 200 during the 2012 primary election to just 60 for 2016. Some predominantly Latino areas only got one or no polling places at all. People had to wait in 5+ hour lines to vote. Please investigate and put a stop to the voter suppression before the general election.

During this past Tuesday's primary election in Maricopa County, Arizona, the number of polling places was reduced from 200 during the 2012 primary election to just 60 for 2016.1 Officials were warned that this would mean long lines and discourage people from voting. But they did it anyway.

Some predominantly Latino areas only got one polling place. Others got none at all. County officials allocated one polling place for every 108,000 residents on average in Phoenix, a minority-majority city—but Anglo communities had far more polling sites per resident. The result was traffic jams, and people had to wait in 5-hour lines to vote.2,3

Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell, in charge of overseeing the election, told reporters she was sorry people were upset but didn't offer solutions.

The Justice Department can put a stop to this; they are the best hope for upholding the rights of all Arizona voters. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has asked for the DOJ to investigate. Now it's our turn to keep up the pressure.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

—Laura Packard

TODAY: Calls for the Supreme Court!

Dear MoveOn member,

On the very first day Senators are back home for spring recess, let's make sure they hear the sound of their constituents, as we raise our voices together—calling for a fair and timely hearing and a vote for Supreme Court nominee, Judge Merrick Garland.

While thousands of MoveOn members and allies from 40 national organizations stage demonstrations outside Senate district offices across the country (as we will during today's day of action), we can make sure that the phones inside the offices of Senate Democrats are ringing with the same message: "Senator, we're counting on you to lead the Supreme Court fight in the Senate."

Will you call Senator Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today and tell them that you are counting on them to lead the fight for a timely and fair hearing and vote for Judge Garland?

Please click here to find the telephone number of the district office closest to you.

You can say,"The Constitution makes it perfectly clear. The president has done his job. I'm counting on Sen. Schumer and Sen. Gillibrand to lead the fight in the Senate for a fair and timely hearing and a vote for Judge Garland."

The majority of Americans want lawmakers to do their job and fill the empty seat on the Supreme Court.1

Because we can help end decades of conservative control of our nation's highest court.

Because the GOP's reckless obstruction is a threat to the Constitution and yet another attempt to undermine the president and our democracy.

Will you pick up the phone right now and call Sen. Schumer and Sen. Gillibrand?

Please click here to find the telephone number of the district office closest to you.

You can say,"The Constitution makes it perfectly clear. The president has done his job. I'm counting on Sen. Schumer and Sen. Gillibrand to lead the fight in the Senate for a fair and timely hearing and a vote for Judge Garland."

There is power in numbers.

Power in raising our voices together.

Power that Senate Democrats can’t ignore—especially once their district phones start ringing!

Thanks for all you do.
