Defeat this pathetic coward

The New York Times says that we have a 56% chance of taking back the Senate on Election Day.

Dear MoveOn member,

The New York Times says that we have a 56% chance of taking back the Senate on Election Day.1 I’d call those roll-up-your-sleeves fighting odds, wouldn’t you?

If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves with me, can you chip in just $3 right now to expand MoveOn’s on-the-ground efforts in eight battleground states—including seven with key Senate races we can win?

Yes, I’ll join you and MoveOn in hot pursuit of a Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate come Election Day.

(MoveOn needs to make its final decision about how many swing-state organizers to hire in the next week, and that decision depends on how much its team raises today through Labor Day. So now's the time to give.)

Just the thought of Donald Trump winning the White House is enough for us to give it our all. Donald Trump has opened a door to such ugliness—but enough Americans are turned off that we have a real chance to take back the Senate.

And there’s more: An increasing number of House seats are also now in play.2 In fact, political experts say that if Trump falls in the polls by just a little more, Democrats could take back the House as well.3

MoveOn’s grassroots organizing has helped get us this far. But with stakes this high and poll margins as tight as they are, this is no time to sit on the sidelines.

I’m not letting up for one second from now until Election Day, and I hope you’ll be with us all the way to the end.

We have 69 days. Sixty-nine days to win the White House, take back the Senate, maybe even the House—and, with the Supreme Court hanging in the balance, change the future of our nation for a generation. But there are only a few days left for MoveOn to figure out how many doors it will be able to knock on, how many conversations its team will be able to have, and how many voters it will be able to reach.

Can you chip in $3 right now and help expand the number of people MoveOn’s team will be able to reach?

Yes! I’m with you and MoveOn! I’ll join this sprint to the finish line.

Have you caught news of MoveOn’s Senate endorsements this election cycle? Eight powerhouse women in a group of 11, alongside progressive champions like Russ Feingold. Now that’s what I’m talking about.

Imagine the Senate with MoveOn-endorsed Democratic candidate Patty Judge instead of Republican Senator Chuck Grassley—the senator who has devoted himself to blocking President Obama’s Supreme Court nominees at all costs. If we win there, we’ll be one step closer to a fully-functioning Supreme Court, and we'll have a fighter for free community college.

And that's just the beginning of what will be possible as MoveOn also helps rocket women like Illinois Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, California Attorney General Kamala Harris, and Nevada's Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto to victory in November.

Come on! Can you help make sure these amazing women become the foundation of a progressive Senate A-Team?

Yes. I'm in. I’ll help take back the Senate by chipping in $3 now.

Donald Trump is weighing down the shoulders (and poll numbers) of vulnerable Republican senators like Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson and Pennsylvania’s Pat Toomey. Even long-time Senator John McCain is facing the toughest election of his career.4

For far too long, Republicans have blocked every single good faith effort Democrats have pushed to expand opportunity for regular Americans. They’ve made it possible for Wall Street bankers to run our economy and for giant corporations to ship jobs overseas.

Not only do the Republicans deserve to lose, they deserve to lose big—to be swamped by a giant progressive wave election.

Click here now to invest $3 in MoveOn's proven 1-2-3 formula for success.

Here it is:

  • Hire a team of highly-skilled field organizers who will mobilize thousands of passionate volunteers to knock on hundreds of thousands of critical, targeted voters’ doors in key election states. (And I know from personal experience that this is the single most important strategy MoveOn can deploy.)
  • Create more breakthrough videos and ads—game-changing digital content that will be seen and shared hundreds of millions of times.
  • Mobilize key groups—like veterans—who can shine a spotlight on GOP Senate candidates’ shameful support for Donald Trump at the expense of their friends, family, and neighbors.

All-out grassroots work like this takes real money. MoveOn has already invested millions of dollars in its election program. With the Senate and some key House races in play, MoveOn is perfectly poised to quickly scale up its work—as long as enough of us chip in right now, before Labor Day.

Look, I’m going to level with you—and I know some of you may not like what I have to say.

You can bet Republicans are hoping that progressives won’t get our act together. That we won’t work our hearts out for Hillary Clinton. That we won’t seize the opportunity that’s right in front of us to stop Donald Trump’s hatred and build a Trump-proof Democratic firewall in the Senate.

That’s why MoveOn’s work is so darn critical right now, and it’s why I’m so invested personally in MoveOn’s United Against Hate election campaign.

MoveOn members were and remain a central force in my campaign for the Senate and in Bernie Sanders’ campaign. And it’s because of your grit—and your passion to fight for real and lasting change—that I know MoveOn and its members are critical to winning on Election Day.

Equally important, our country needs MoveOn to help lead the post-election charge for a government and economy that work in the best interest of all Americans, not only the rich and powerful. That charge will be all the more possible if we defeat Trump, take back the Senate, and make meaningful gains in the House.

Let's all join forces with MoveOn and make it happen. Together. Click here to chip in $3, or whatever you can afford.

Thanks for all you do.

–Elizabeth Warren

P.S. In the end, there are really only two words (that are email-appropriate) that sum up Donald Trump: pathetic coward. Donald Trump can’t handle the fact that he’s losing to a woman. A woman with steady hands, thick skin, and a long commitment to children’s rights, women’s rights, and human rights. A woman who’s infinitely more qualified than he’ll ever hope to be. Boy, am I looking forward to our nation moving way beyond Trump’s divisive ugliness, once we hand him a resounding defeat on Election Day. Please chip in $3 now.

FW: I have huge news

I have huge, breaking news to share. More and more, it's looking like we can turn Donald Trump into a big old anchor that'll drag the GOP down.

Hi Eddie—As I mentioned a couple days ago, we have a big, new opportunity: Democrats now have a 60% chance of taking back the Senate in November according to The New York Times.1 And, political experts say that if Trump falls in the polls by just three more points, Democrats could even take back the House.2

MoveOn has to raise $150,000 by Monday to enable its team to kick into high gear. Will you join me in supporting MoveOn's organizing effort to defeat Trump by an overwhelming margin and take back the Senate?

Click here to pitch in $2.70 now.

For more information, see my email from last week, below:

Dear MoveOn member,

I have huge, breaking news to share.

More and more, it's looking like we can turn Donald Trump into the big old anchor that'll drag the GOP down—allowing us to take back the Senate, pick up a slew of House seats, and usher in a whole raft of down-ballot progressive candidates in the process!

Here are the numbers: Currently, Trump is losing by about 6-7 points in most national polls, which is enough to put Republican control of the Senate at risk.1 In fact, The New York Times just gave Democrats a 60% chance of taking the Senate.2 But political experts say that if that gap grows to 8-10 or more points, Democrats could even take back the House.3

Can you chip in $2.70 now, so that MoveOn can seize this opportunity that we can't afford to miss?

Yes, I'm in. I'll chip in now.

Thanks to MoveOn members like you, MoveOn has already invested millions of dollars in a massive field operation across states like New Hampshire, Iowa, and Ohio, that are key to beating Trump in November.

But now, MoveOn is moving quickly to expand the electoral map and run campaigns in districts we never thought would be viable, so we can win back the Senate and even put the House into play. That means:

  • Producing breakthrough videos and ads that tie vulnerable GOP Senate candidates to a floundering Trump.
  • Running high-visibility, on-the-ground actions that turn up the heat—like the work MoveOn is doing with veterans to weaken GOP Senate candidates by shining a spotlight on their support for Trump.
  • And knocking on hundreds of thousands of doors to have face-to-face conversations with progressive voters about key Senate races coast to coast, which we know is the single most effective thing we can do to win in November.4

There's no other way to say it: To take advantage of this historic moment, MoveOn must raise more money. A lot more. In fact, MoveOn has to raise $150,000 by Monday to enable its team to kick into high gear.

Click here now to join me in supporting MoveOn by chipping in $2.70.

As I've made clear time and again, I believe in MoveOn and its unique and critical role in defeating Trump on Election Day. I also believe that we need MoveOn's tenacious team to wrest control of the Senate out of the GOP's hands and help drive a progressive-wave election—an Election Day sweep that could make a powerful difference in the lives of you, me, and everyone we know, for years to come.

I've already personally invested in MoveOn, so I'm asking you to join me. Will you chip in $2.70 now so that MoveOn can expand its already game-changing election work?

Yes, I'll chip in now to help keep Trump out of the White House and win back the Senate.

Some say I'm an unforgivable optimist. Well, so be it. I've devoted my entire professional life to making this nation and our economy work for all Americans.

Yes. I dare to hope "on this side of the grave"—as Irish Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney says so well—but not without cause.5 I've worked for years—along with MoveOn members like you—so that Heaney's "tidal wave of justice" can "rise up." And this is our moment.

Defeating Trump, taking back the Senate, and helping to drive a progressive-wave election means a fully-functioning and liberal Supreme Court, for the first time in a generation. One that could overturn Citizens United and rein in corrosive big money in politics, protect a woman's right to choose, and stop voter suppression.

It means we could begin to take on devastating climate change.

It means a Congress we could push for free public higher education. Single payer health care. Universal child care. Gun control. A $15 per hour minimum wage. And so much more.

Will you chip in $2.70 now, so that MoveOn can expand its elections work?

Yes, I'm in.

Before I close, I need to make sure that you know that while I'm an optimist, I'm not insane. (At least, I think that's mostly true these days.)

I don't think the kind of changes you and I are working for will be easily wrought. It's magical thinking to imagine that President Clinton—or even a President Clinton with a very narrow Democratic Senate majority—will solve all of our country's challenges with a sprinkling of fairy dust.

That's why we're unlocking the most promising source of countervailing power in America—power that was tapped by Bernie's campaign, and power that MoveOn is harnessing now—through Election Day, and in the years to come. And that power is you. And millions of MoveOn members like you determined to reclaim, renew, and transform our American democracy by holding Hillary Clinton and all of our elected leaders accountable for working in our best interest.

What we do together today will leave us stronger for tomorrow.

Hell yes. Hell. Yes.

And about damn time, too.

Please. Chip in now—every dollar counts.

Thanks for all you do.

—Robert Reich

P.S. Here’s a loving message to the cynics among you. (And I've been there, so there's no judgment attached.) If you're cynical about our nation, then it could cause you to stop being involved. If you stop being involved—if you basically give up—then you’re giving up on our democracy. And if you give up on our democracy, you are ceding the entire shebang to the moneyed interests who would like nothing better than for all of us to surrender and go back to bed. We just cannot let them win. Please, be part of a progressive wave by chipping in $2.70 now. We need every progressive in America, joined together, to win.

Sign the petition: Tell Enterprise to stop funding climate change denial

Tell Enterprise: Live up to your values of sustainability and cut all ties to ALEC, the extreme right-wing lobbying group that denies climate change and blocks climate action.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Emily Southard of ClimateTruth.org, and I started a petition to Pamela Nicholson, President and CEO or Enterprise, which says:

Live up to your values of sustainability by immediately cutting all ties with ALEC, the extreme right-wing lobbying group that denies climate change and blocks climate action.

Enterprise, the largest car rental company in the world, was recently revealed by the Center for Media and Democracy and The Guardian to be a dues-paying member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).1

ALEC helps right-wing lawmakers fulfill corporate wishlists on a variety of topics that undermine American health and safety—including spreading climate change denial and blocking climate solutions. Enterprise makes "green" commitments to plant trees and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in public, but funds ALEC in private.2 Enterprise must cut ties with ALEC immediately.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Update on EpiPens

Many people who could die without an EpiPen now can't afford one! Tell Big Pharma to immediately reduce the cost of this life-or-death treatment.

Dear MoveOn member,

Next week, we're delivering more than 200,000 signatures to pharmaceutical company Mylan's corporate headquarters to fight back against EpiPen price-gouging. There's still time to make sure your name is included: Click here to sign the petition now.

EpiPen creator Mylan just responded to public outrage over its price-gouging by offering discount cards. But this false solution can be summed up as too little, too late and will leave many families paying more than $300 out of pocket.1 If Mylan wants to act responsibly in the wake of this public outrage over its contemptible and unconscionable price spikes for EpiPens, there's only one course of action: Actually lower the price.

Keep up the pressure on Mylan and tell the CEO: Stop price-gouging customers who rely on the EpiPen! Click here to sign your name alongside 200,000 MoveOn members who have already taken action, and it'll be delivered in-person next week.

Thanks for all you do.

—Robert Weissman
President, Public Citizen

P.S. You can read the original, urgent note from MoveOn member Debbie Pierce below.

Tell Mylan CEO Heather Bresch: Stop price-gouging the EpiPen now.

Stop price-gouging the millions of people who need an EpiPen to save their lives if they have a severe allergic reaction.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

My son will die without an EpiPen—he literally has less than 10 minutes to get to a hospital with the pen. But Mylan, the multinational company that makes this life-saving drug, just ruthlessly raised the price. I can't afford to buy new pens at $300 per year, and the ones he already has expire in a couple of months. Pharmaceutical companies must stop this greedy price gouging now.

Will you join me in signing the petition to Mylan CEO Heather Bresch asking the company to stop price-gouging the EpiPen immediately?

Millions of children and adults in the U.S. are at risk of fatal allergic reactions from common occurrences, like getting stung by a bee or accidentally consuming peanuts.

A pocket-sized medical device called an EpiPen can be a literal life-saver for people with severe, life-threatening allergies.

But Mylan—the multinational pharmaceutical company that makes the EpiPen—has been steadily jacking up its price.

  • In 2007, the wholesale price of an EpiPen in the U.S. was $57.2
  • Today, just nine years later, it's over $300.3
  • Even though each EpiPen contains only $1 worth of medicine.4
  • Even though a two-pack is just $85 in France.5
  • And even though Mylan, which has a near monopoly in the U.S., has seen its profits from the EpiPen alone skyrocket to $1 billion a year.6

Now, many people, like my son, could actually die because they can't afford an EpiPen!

Tell Mylan CEO Heather Bresch to immediately reduce the cost of this life-or-death treatment that so many people depend on.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

—Debbie Pierce

EpiPen

Many people who could die without an EpiPen now can't afford one! Tell Big Pharma to immediately reduce the cost of this life-or-death treatment.

  • In 2007, the wholesale price of an EpiPen in the U.S. was $57.1
  • Today, just nine years later, it's over $300.2
  • Even though each EpiPen contains only $1 worth of medicine.3
  • Even though a two-pack is just $85 in France.4
  • And even though Mylan, which has a near monopoly in the U.S., has seen its profits from the EpiPen alone skyrocket to $1 billion a year.5

A wave election?

Here are three things we must do to make sure the revolution to continues in full force:

Dear MoveOn member,

The Bernie for President campaign is over, but the political revolution that he launched against corporate rule is just beginning.

We can’t let up. Here are three things we must do to make sure the revolution to continues in full force:

  • Defeat Donald Trump. If Donald Trump is elected, he'll destroy our progress—and this country—faster than a hog eats supper!
  • Take back the U.S. Senate (and maybe even the House!). With Trump dragging Republicans down in the polls, there's a huge opportunity to elect progressive champions—like Russ Feingold in Wisconsin and Tammy Duckworth in Illinois—to the Senate, and to make Bernie and Elizabeth Warren chairs of powerful committees.1 But key Senate races—in New Hampshire, Ohio, and Pennsylvania—are neck and neck.2 Which means we need to organize.
  • Push from the left. During and after the election, we've got to push Democrats to be bold progressives.

And if there's one organizing group who can do it all, it's MoveOn. That's why you should get on with it.

Chip in $3 now.

Bernie's revolution lifted us progressives from the political scrap heap up to the top of our national conversation—fighting to pass a $15 minimum wage, remove crushing education debt from the backs of students, address head-on the imminent crisis of climate change, defeat TPP, and repeal the Supreme Court’s democracy-destroying Citizens United edict.

But now the biggest obstacle standing in the way of our progress is an unreal reality show—starring The Donald.

Don't think Trump can win? Shoot, I'm from Texas, the state that brought you King George the W. and Rick Perry (a guy who put the "goober” in gubernatorial). They seemed improbable, too, and look at what a mess they made when they got elected. And even if Trump does lose, we still need to take back Congress.

MoveOn's plan is this: Let's organize! And that's why I'm writing you today.

MoveOn's running what's likely the largest independent, volunteer-powered voter outreach program in the country, focused on eight battleground states, organizing volunteer teams to knock on hundreds of thousands of doors in their own communities, neighbor by neighbor, to defeat Trump, take back the Senate (and maybe even the House), and build grassroots progressive leadership. It’s a massive undertaking, and they need our help to pull it all off.

Will you help out?

Click here to chip in $3 right now to help MoveOn defeat Trump, take back the Senate, and build a more progressive America.

As Bernie’s message spread through mass rallies and social media last fall and winter, I traveled the country and saw a revolution deeply motivated by hope—a belief in and a yearning for a more egalitarian America, a society dedicated to democracy’s fundamental principle: We’re all in this together.

That’s why I know that, if we put our collective shoulder to the wheel, we can defeat Trump in November and keep building the insurgency Bernie sparked to democratize our country’s wealth and power to benefit all and serve the common good.

Let’s do something, together.

Chip in $3 now—or whatever you can afford.

In solidarity,

Tell the FDA: Get hormone-disrupting chemicals out of our food now

Toxic chemicals called phthalates are allowed to be used as food additives.

Tell the FDA: Get hormone-disrupting chemicals out of our food

I am deeply concerned that toxic chemicals called phthalates are allowed to be used as food additives.

We must do a better job of protecting our children from chemicals. I urge the FDA to stop allowing toxic phthalates to be used in our food. The brain development and reproductive capacity of a generation of children are on the line.

Dear MoveOn member,

No matter how careful you are about what you eat, your food could be loaded with toxic chemicals called phthalates.1

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering a petition, filed by Earthjustice and several partner organizations, asking the agency to withdraw its approval of all 30 phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates) currently allowed as food additives. And the deadline for the public to weigh in expires in just weeks.2

Please tell the FDA that phthalates don't belong in our food.

Phthalates are a class of hormone-disrupting chemicals that have been linked to severe genital birth defects in boys and to other reproductive health problems. They're also linked to deficits in child IQ, developmental delays, and other learning disabilities.3

It's hard to avoid phthalates because they're used in many of the materials that come into contact with our food—from the plastic gloves that food workers wear, to plastic equipment used in processing food, to the plastic packaging our food is sold in. Phthalates leach out of these materials and seep into our food, ending up in all of our bodies.4

Despite powerful scientific evidence of the harmful health effects of these chemicals, the FDA still allows the use of 30 different toxic phthalates as "food additives," meaning that they can be used in food-handling equipment and food packaging.5

Click here to sign the petition to the FDA, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

I served as a Republican in Congress for 15 years

Defeating Trump is not enough.

Dear MoveOn member,

My family have been active Republicans in California since 1860 and the election of Abraham Lincoln. I was privileged to serve in Congress for 15 years, as a Republican, between 1967 and 1983, co-chairing the first Earth Day in 1970 with Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, co-authoring the Endangered Species Act and other landmark environmental legislation, and I was the first to suggest Richard Nixon should be impeached. In those years, Republicans favored balanced budgets, women's rights, limiting presidential war power, civil rights, tax reform, and protection of the environment.

No more.

The 2016 Republican platform calls for transferring federal lands, including several national parks and national forests, to the states, and for denying women the right to choose. It also ignores our obligation to address global warming. And it moves to limit the voting rights of minorities and opposes campaign finance reform.

And then there's Donald Trump.

But defeating Trump is not enough. If Republicans are allowed to continue to control the Senate, the next president will be hobbled, as President Obama has been. Only if the Senate has a Democratic majority will the next president be able to appoint reasonable Supreme Court justices, protect women's rights, and preserve the environmental progress that has been made over the past 45 years.

We have the opportunity to elect Democrats in several too-close-to-call races, including Maggie Hassan in New Hampshire, Russ Feingold in Wisconsin, Tammy Duckworth in Illinois, Ted Strickland in Ohio, Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada, and Katie McGinty in Pennsylvania. Each of these Democrats can win if we act to balance the enormous financial contributions of the Koch brothers and multinational companies, now unlimited under Citizens United, to candidates who support big business.

If you agree, can I persuade you to join me in sending $3—or $300, if you can afford it—to support MoveOn's campaign to win back the Senate?

Thanks for all you do.

Sign my petition? (Donald Trump)

Immigrants make America great. Donald Trump makes America small, petty, and mean.

I challenge Donald Trump to take the U.S. naturalization test—will you join me?

Dear MoveOn member,

Donald Trump announced Monday that, if elected president, he would enact an extreme "vetting" test to determine if the values of those seeking to enter the U.S. are so-called American values.1 He claims his test would expose those who have "hostile attitudes" towards America. Yet we know that his proposal is fueled by racism and xenophobia.

Will you join me in challenging Donald Trump to take the current naturalization test immigrants must pass to become U.S. citizens before he tries advocate for any more hateful laws?

I challenge you, Donald Trump, to take the naturalization test immigrants to this nation must take to gain American citizenship. This test is just one part of the process immigrants undergo to become citizens, and you would almost certainly fail that test given your general ignorance and weak grasp of basic facts about American history, principles, and functioning of our government.

Immigrants make America great. You make America small, petty, and mean.

Our country already has a test immigrants take when they apply for citizenship—one that tests their knowledge of American history and civics. So, before Trump gets to propose a new, xenophobic test, I challenge him to take the one that already exists.

I believe Trump would almost certainly fail this test, given his general ignorance and weak grasp of basic facts about American history, principles, and functioning of our government. His entire political career—beginning with his absurd and dangerous campaign to discredit President Obama—has been built around alienating other Americans.

The fact is, Donald Trump is nothing more than a spoiled, unpatriotic drain on society who has earned nothing and helped no one.

Thanks!

Sign the petition: Voters deserve free and fair elections

Add your name to stand with Miami-Dade voters, and take an important step toward getting money out of politics on the national level.

Dear MoveOn member,

Last week, New Florida Majority and its partners turned in over 127,000 petitions in Miami-Dade County calling for an initiative on the ballot this November to reduce the power of big-money interests and give ordinary people a stronger voice in our elections.1 While this fight is local, its success could strengthen the movement to get big money out of politics across the country.

Right now, blatant inaction by the mayor and county commission is standing in the way of the will of the people and threatens to keep the initiative off the ballot. Will you add your name so we can deliver it tomorrow to Carlos A. Gimenez, Miami-Dade County mayor, and all Miami-Dade County commissioners demanding they take action to ensure that this issue is on the ballot in November?

We demand that you direct the supervisor of elections to immediately begin counting the over 127,000 petitions submitted to ensure Miami-Dade voters are heard this election. Residents deserve a public vote on new campaign-finance laws to get big money out of politics.

Wealthy special interests have too big a say in who gets to run for office and what laws get passed. Political donations have a large amount of influence over the political process, and the vibrant diversity of communities around the country, such as Miami-Dade County, isn't represented in the donor class.

For example, Black people make up one-fifth of Miami-Dade County's population, but only two percent of donors to mayoral candidates.2 The donor pool for county commission candidates includes more Black donors but is still not representative.3

Add your name to tomorrow's delivery to stand with Miami-Dade voters, and take an important step toward getting money out of politics on the national level.

The ballot initiative in Miami-Dade County, which successfully gained over 127,000 petition signatures, would encourage a more diverse donor pool and empower the county's Black population, and it could pave the way for similar legislation around the country. The initiative would:

  • lower contribution limits,
  • prohibit contributions from big county contractors and their lobbyists, and
  • strengthen enforcement and update the county's public financing program to replace the large donations from wealthy special interests with small donations from ordinary people.

The people of Miami-Dade County have spoken, and they want this initiative on the November ballot. Will you stand with them and make sure their voices are heard?

All the rules regarding petition circulation and delivery were followed in Miami-Dade County, and now it is time for the Elections Department to fulfill its duty to count and verify the petitions in time for the 2016 election. Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the county commissioners cannot ignore the voices of over 127,000 people and deny the right to free and fair elections to Miami-Dade's residents.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!
