Democrats undermining Obama

President Obama and the EPA are working to create a clean energy economy—but conservative Democrats in Congress are siding with Big Oil and Coal to undermine Obama. We need a massive campaign to expose them—can you chip in $25?

Contribute
Dear MoveOn member,

Remember when Dick Cheney let oil and coal lobbyists craft our nation's energy policy behind closed doors?

Barack Obama may have thrown them out of the White House—but they've relocated to Capitol Hill, with the help of some powerful conservative Democrats in Congress.

In weeks of often secret negotiations over this year's energy bill, these Democrats managed to not just weaken the legislation, but even to slip in language that would prevent the Obama administration from cleaning up coal plants and oil refineries.

We can't let a few conservative Democrats get away with undermining Obama's clean energy jobs plan. So we're fighting back with a massive campaign to fix the bill and expose members of Congress who are undermining Obama—but we need to know if we have the resources to pull it off.

To meet our goal, it's going to take 3,000 of us donating today, which means we need 3 donations from people in Inwood—can you chip in $25 to help out?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/epa1.html?id=16264-10220574-v3M_3vx&t=3

Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, led by progressive Democrats Henry Waxman and Edward Markey, passed a huge energy bill aimed at creating clean energy jobs.

But unfortunately, a few conservatives on the committee were determined to weaken the bill—and working behind closed doors, they did some real damage.

And what's worse—they didn't just work with Republicans to weaken the bill, they're also trying to tie Obama's hands so he can't take action on his own. The latest version of the legislation would take away the Environmental Protection Agency's existing authority to curb global warming pollution from power plants, oil refineries, and other industrial sources.

Why does that matter? Because the Obama administration is already taking its own steps towards building a clean energy economy. The White House recently announced a bold plan to make cars use less gas—and the EPA is considering whether to propose new rules that would clean up coal plants and oil refineries.1

These steps could help move us toward cleaner, cheaper sources of energy and create millions of clean energy jobs—but not if Congress pulls the rug out from under President Obama before he can act.

We're ramping up a major effort to strengthen the clean energy jobs bill and make sure it doesn't block Obama's efforts. Can you chip in with a contribution of $25? Click here:

Ten Things About Judge Sonia Sotomayor

Dear MoveOn member,

Today, President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be the next U.S. Supreme Court justice. Of course, the Right is already fighting against her confirmation—so we need to get the facts out about her impressive qualifications and background.

Below is a list of 10 key things about Sonia Sotomayor that you might not know. Can you check it out and send it to 10 friends today? If each of us forwards the list, we can start to get the word out about Judge Sotomayor, and help to ensure that she gets a speedy and fair confirmation process.

Ten Things To Know About Judge Sonia Sotomayor

1. Judge Sotomayor would bring more federal judicial experience to the bench than any Supreme Court justice in 100 years. Over her three-decade career, she has served in a wide variety of legal roles, including as a prosecutor, litigator, and judge.

2. Judge Sotomayor is a trailblazer. She was the first Latina to serve on the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and was the youngest member of the court when appointed to the District Court for the Southern District of New York. If confirmed, she will be the first Hispanic to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court.

3. While on the bench, Judge Sotomayor has consistently protected the rights of working Americans, ruling in favor of health benefits and fair wages for workers in several cases.

4. Judge Sotomayor has shown strong support for First Amendment rights, including in cases of religious expression and the rights to assembly and free speech.

5. Judge Sotomayor has a strong record on civil rights cases, ruling for plaintiffs who had been discriminated against based on disability, sex and race.

6. Judge Sotomayor embodies the American dream. Born to Puerto Rican parents, she grew up in a South Bronx housing project and was raised from age nine by a single mother, excelling in school and working her way to graduate summa cum laude from Princeton University and to become an editor of the Law Journal at Yale Law School.

7. In 1995, Judge Sotomayor "saved baseball" when she stopped the owners from illegally changing their bargaining agreement with the players, thereby ending the longest professional sports walk-out in history.

8. Judge Sotomayor ruled in favor of the environment and against business interests in 2007 in a case of protecting aquatic life in the vicinity of power plants, a decision that was overturned by the Roberts Supreme Court.

9. In 1992, Judge Sotomayor was confirmed by the Senate without opposition after being appointed to the bench by George H.W. Bush.

10. Judge Sotomayor is a widely respected legal figure, having been described as "...an outstanding colleague with a keen legal mind," "highly qualified for any position in which wisdom, intelligence, collegiality and good character would be assets," and "a role model of aspiration, discipline, commitment, intellectual prowess and integrity."

Judge Sotomayor is an historic, uniquely qualified nominee to the Supreme Court. Let's get the word out and make sure we get a prompt, fair confirmation on her nomination.

Thanks for all you do,

Re: Breaking news on health care

Dear MoveOn member,

Amazing! After news broke of Blue Cross Blue Shield's new campaign to defeat Obama's health care plan, MoveOn members responded in a huge way. Together, we smashed our goal and raised $270,000 in just one day. (Thanks!)

But the HMOs and insurance giants are just getting started—and we know that their attacks are only going to get uglier and more deceiving. With crucial health care reform decisions being made as we speak, we can't afford to let opponents of bold health care reform go unanswered even once.

So we're setting a new goal: reach $350,000 in the next 24 hours. If we can hit this mark, we'll send a strong message to the entire industry that if they start trying to block Obama's key health care proposal to cover everyone, we'll be ready to fight back—hard.

If you have $25 to chip in, please click here:

P.S. Yesterday's email with the whole story about Blue Cross Blue Shield's anti-Obama campaign is below.

Blue Cross Blue Shield is trying to kill "a key plank in Obama's reform platform." So we're trying to raise $150,000 in two days to fight back.  Can you chip in $25 right now?

Dear MoveOn member,

Breaking news on health care: The Washington Post is now reporting that insurance giant Blue Cross Blue Shield "is putting the finishing touches on a public message campaign aimed at killing a key plank in Obama's reform platform."1

The Huffington Post sums it up as "Insurers Planning on Double-Crossing Obama."2

We knew the insurance companies would eventually turn on the president, but this is much sooner than expected. And they're targeting the public health insurance option—the crucial piece that will help cover everyone. So we're immediately launching a rapid-response campaign to go toe-to-toe with Blue Cross Blue Shield and win quality health care for all Americans.

We need to raise $150,000 in the next two days. It's a lot, but we'll need every penny to take on Goliath. We'll run ads, hold events, and work like crazy to get the real truth out to voters. AND we'll keep the pressure on Congress to make sure they don't get bullied into gutting the president's plan to guarantee health care coverage for everyone. Can you chip in $25 right now to make it happen?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/blueshield.html?id=16170-10220574-JJg5Emx&t=4

The public health insurance option is a key provision in Obama's plan to help cover all of us. It would finally give everyone the choice between keeping our current insurance or switching to a new, high-quality public plan. And under a public health insurance plan our premiums wouldn't subsidize CEO salaries or stockholder profits (or in this case, misleading attack ads), so we'd all save a lot on health care costs.

Plus, if we had the choice of a public plan, private insurers would have to lower rates and improve quality to compete, so they're dead set against it. Today's news just confirms that fact.

In the past, Blue Cross Blue Shield has been sued for underpaying doctors and fined for refusing to cover necessary medical treatments for their customers.3 Now, with what watchdog group Media Matters calls a "desperate attempt to deceive,"4 they've gone one step too far.

Can you chip in $25 to help stand against Blue Cross Blue Shield and pass health care reform with a strong public option?

The key to health care

Your feedback matters. What do you think of this email? (Please only rate it highly if you REALLY love it).

I can't stand by while patients suffer under a broken system, especially when change is possible. So I'm asking you to call Congress with me today to demand a public health insurance option.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: 202-224-4451

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Report your call
Dear fellow MoveOn member,

As a doctor, I see the urgent need for health care reform—and especially, a strong public health insurance option.

My patients are being forced to choose between paying their health insurance or their rent, between buying medicine they need or keeping their kids in college.

A public health insurance option could change that by giving Americans the choice of keeping their current insurance or switching to a new public plan that could bring down costs and cover everyone.

I can't stand by while patients suffer under a broken system, especially when change is possible. A key Senate committee could unveil its proposal this week—and we need it to be as strong as possible.

So I'm asking you to call Congress with me today. Just tell your senators: "I support the public health insurance option.

Here's where to call:

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: 202-224-4451

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Our goal is 10,000 calls from MoveOn members today.  Click here after you call so MoveOn can track the calls.

http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FSNY_2.FSNY_1&cp_id=914&id=16153-10220574-GZAtTUx&t=13

The public health insurance option is real possibility. It's gaining support in Congress, and is backed by the president and a majority of Americans.

If enacted, the plan would:

  • Create a new, high-quality public health insurance option that could save us lot of money off our private premiums. And we'd still get to keep our doctors.
  • Help those who keep their private plan save too! If consumers are able to choose, the for-profit insurers will have to offer higher quality care for lower prices to compete.
  • Provide all of us with the security we need. The public health insurance option will always be there for Americans who lose their insurance, or just don't have any.

But attack groups are working hard to stop it. They've already launched an all-out campaign to scare elected officials and the public out of supporting the public health insurance option. They want to stop health reform. Again.

We can't let them succeed. For my patients, the stakes are too high. Please call today.

Thanks for all you do.

Your credit card statement

Clicking here will sign your name:
"We need a strong Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights that isn't watered down by the big banks—and we need it now."

Sign the petition
Dear MoveOn member,

Have you ever looked at your credit card statement and realized your interest rate was twice what it was the month before?  Or wondered why you're getting charged a late fee when you paid your bill on time?

Credit card companies are notorious for back-handed maneuvers like these. And they've been doing this for so long, it almost feels hopeless to protest.

But now, the Senate is considering a strong bill to outlaw some of their most egregious abuses.

But the bill isn't moving, and too many senators are scared to take truly bold action against the banks. If enough of us speak out together quickly, we can make sure Congress knows we expect them to protect voters, not banks. Can you add your name now so they get the message? Clicking below adds your name:

The petition says: "We need a strong Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights that isn't watered down by the big banks—and we need it now."

To get our economy back on track, we need a functioning financial system that extends credit on fair terms to worthy borrowers like small businesses, students, and car buyers.

But as long as the banks are the ones writing the rules, we'll continue to have a system that's good for them and bad for everyone else. Since the early 1980s, the government has gotten rid of more and more regulations at the banks' urging. Entire industries have sprung up built on misleading people and taking advantage of them.

Now that we've seen the disastrous consequences of that deregulation, we have to act.

The House bill passed by a big margin, but the Senate bill, sponsored by Senator Chris Dodd, is significantly tougher on the banks. If we don't pass strong reform now—in this moment of anger at the industry's wild abuses—we may not get the chance again. That's why we need to speak out right away to make sure the banks can't block or water down these necessary reforms.

Can you add your name now?

Lies that could defeat health care

Conservative lies about Obama's proposed public health insurance option could take root if we don't fight back. Can you send this email this out to your friends and neighbors?  Just forward this email or click below to send this message using our handy online tool:

Dear MoveOn member,

Last week Republicans on Capitol Hill held a strategy summit on how to defeat key parts of the president's health care plan.

At one point, Republican pollster Frank Luntz declared, "You're not going to get what you want, but you can kill what they're trying to do."1

Luntz wrote a confidential memo that laid out the Republican strategy: Pretend to support reform. Mislead Americans about the heart of Obama's plan, the public health insurance option. Scare enough people to doom real reform.

Since most people don't know much about the public health care option, these lies could take root if we don't fight back. Can you send this out to all your friends and neighbors?

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OBAMA'S PUBLIC HEALTH INSURANCE OPTION

The choice of a public health insurance plan is crucial to real health care reform. But right now, it's being smeared by conservatives and insurance-industry front groups. Here's what you really need to know:

1. Choice, choice, choice. If the public health insurance option passes, Americans will be able to choose between their current insurance and a high-quality, government-run plan similar to Medicare. If you like your current care, you can keep it. If you don't—or don't have any—you can get the public insurance plan.2

2. It will be high-quality coverage with a choice of doctors. Government-run plans have a track record of innovating to improve quality, because they're not just focused on short-term profits. And if you choose the public plan, you'll still get to choose your doctor and hospital.3

3. We'll all save a bunch of money. The public health insurance option won't have to spend money on things like CEO bonuses, shareholder dividends, or excessive advertising, so it'll cost a lot less. Plus, the private plans will have to lower their rates and provide better value to compete, so people who keep their current insurance will save, too.4

4. It will always be there for you and your family. A for-profit insurer can close, move out of the area, or just kick you off their insurance rolls. The public health insurance option will always be available to provide you with the health security you need.5

5. And it's a key part of universal health care. No longer will sick people or folks in rural communities, or low-income Americans be forced to go without coverage. The public health insurance plan will be available and accessible to everyone. And for those struggling to make ends meet, the premiums will be subsidized by the government.6

We all need to speak out to make sure we get real health reform. Please pass this email on, then call your senators and ask them to support the choice of a public health insurance plan. Here's the info for your state:

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: 202-224-4451

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

The public health insurance option is a big part of the change we fought so hard for last fall. We didn't let the smears beat Obama then. And we can't let new lies beat us now. Please forward this to everyone you know.

Thanks for all you do.

Do you run a small business or have a green job?

Dear MoveOn member,

Do you own or manage a small business, or have a clean energy job? If so, you have a unique role in passing President Obama's plan for a new energy economy.

You see, Big Oil and Coal are busy trying to convince Congress that America can't afford to invest in energy efficiency and green jobs.

Small-business owners are on the front lines of the economic crisis—and know the status quo isn't working. America desperately needs to reduce energy costs, spur innovation, and generate millions of new green jobs.

So Congress has got to hear from you today. Already, 15,000 small-business leaders have signed our petition in support of clean energy.

Can you add your name? Click the link that applies to you:

I own or manage a small business.

I work in a clean energy job related to energy efficiency or renewable energy.

On Monday, corporate conservatives are launching an intense lobbying blitz on Capitol Hill to defeat the clean energy jobs bill. We can counter them with a petition from small-business leaders in support of President Obama's plan.

Congress needs to hear the truth: We can't afford not to invest in clean energy—making America competitive in the 21st century demands nothing less.

Thank you for all you do.

:-)

Dear MoveOn member,

We made this ad a couple weeks ago—and we've been so eager to show you! It's funny and memorable, and we smile every time we see it.  :-)

But we wanted to wait until there was a critical moment on health care to break it out.

That moment is now. The right wing just launched a million-dollar attack on President Obama's health care plan, scaring people off from a critical provision that could guarantee coverage for every American. If their lies stick, we could miss the biggest chance in a generation to achieve universal health care. The first draft of legislation will be finalized in just two weeks—so we need to fight back right now.

Please watch the ad (trust us, you'll like it), pass it around to your friends and family, and, if you can, contribute $25 to help run it far and wide.

Watch our ad

Enjoy! And thanks for all you do.

http://pol.moveon.org/deanforum/?id=16043-10220574-u3ZprNx&t=4

The health care fight is at a pivotal moment right now. There's been real momentum in Congress on the public health insurance option—the most important part of Obama's plan. But Republicans and insurance companies are working hard to crush it, and some Democrats are already wavering.

People like us need to step up now and fight for real health care reform, and that means being armed with the facts and strategies it will take to succeed.

So Dr. Howard Dean is leading an emergency briefing TONIGHT for MoveOn and Democracy for America members about what we all need to know to win health care reform this year—and answering our questions live.

RSVP and submit a question at the link up above, and click here tonight to participate in the briefing:

http://www.moveon.org/drdean?id=16043-10220574-u3ZprNx&t=5

And please pass this email along to your friends, family, neighbors, roommates and coworkers today and invite them to join us tonight. The more people who get this important information, the better chance we'll have of getting real health care reform this year.

Thanks for all you do. And talk to you tonight!

Emergency briefing with Howard Dean on Monday

We're organizing an emergency online briefing on Monday night at 9 p.m. ET with Dr. Howard Dean, called "What we all need to know to win on health care this year." Click here to RSVP:

Dear MoveOn member,

Urgent update on health care: Next week, Congress will begin making the actual decisions about what'll be in a health care reform bill.

Meanwhile, conservative groups have launched a new assault on the president's proposal, including a million-dollar ad campaign claiming that health care will be rationed and "bureaucrats" will "decide the treatments you receive."1

If real people like us don't get involved in this health care fight now, it could all fall apart. So we're holding an emergency online briefing on Monday night at 9 p.m. ET with Dr. Howard Dean to make sure we're all ready for the fight ahead, called "What we all need to know to win on health care this year."

If fixing our health care system is important to you, this is an event you shouldn't miss. All you need to join in is a computer with an internet connection. Can you join us?

Here are the details:

What: Emergency Online Briefing with Dr. Howard Dean (Organized by MoveOn and Democracy for America)

When: Monday, May 4, 9 p.m. ET/ 8 CT/ 7 MT/ 6 PT

Where: MoveOn.org's web site

Click here to tell us you'll be listening in—and submit a question for Dr. Dean:

Yes! I'll be there.

No, that time doesn't work for me.

Last time Democrats tried to pass comprehensive health care reform, it failed. And it failed in part because the opposition was better organized and spread a bunch of lies that progressives weren't prepared to rebut.

It's up to us to not let that happen again. This time, we all need to be well-armed with the critical information to keep the right from blocking change. Dr. Dean will give us an inside look at the battle for real health care reform—and the secrets about what it'll take to achieve a historic victory.

With a key Senate committee meeting on Tuesday to start shaping legislation—plus the right wing's escalating attacks—this couldn't be more urgent.

I'll be part of the emergency briefing, and I really hope you can join me at this crucial moment. Please click here to RSVP:

Thanks for all you do.

Unfit to judge

"Jay Bybee, the man behind the torture memos, is unfit to be a federal judge. Congress should impeach him."

Sign the petition
Dear MoveOn member,

Quick quiz: You're a powerful government lawyer who gives the legal go-ahead for a secret U.S. torture program.

Do you:

a) Lose your license to practice law
b) Go to jail
c) Win a lifetime appointment to one of the highest courts in the land

In the case of Jay Bybee, the answer is "c." Bybee, the lawyer responsible for many of the worst Bush-era torture memos, is currently serving on the prestigious 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, thanks to his old boss, George W. Bush.

That's just not right.

Jay Bybee showed no respect for our laws and isn't fit to be a federal judge.  Can you sign our petition to Congress calling for the impeachment of Jay Bybee?

http://pol.moveon.org/bybee/?id=16033-10220574-a6huldx&t=3

The petition says: "Jay Bybee, the man behind the torture memos, is unfit to be a federal judge. Congress should impeach him.

President Obama said last night that torture "corrodes the character of a country." He's right.  Jay Bybee, who violated the law by coming up with a "legal" rationale for waterboarding and other acts of torture, isn't qualified to hold a position charged with upholding our Constitution.

The outcry for his impeachment is growing; leading progressive in Congress are demanding answers,1 and 20,000 Americans have called for Bybee's impeachment.2  As The New York Times said: "Mr. Bybee is unfit for a job that requires legal judgment and a respect for the Constitution. Congress should impeach him."3

The calls to impeach Bybee are getting noticed—but Congress hasn't acted yet, and might not, unless we ramp up the call for accountability. There's a real chance Bybee will be held accountable, but only if we show Congress that if they lead, we'll support them.

Can you sign the petition today?

http://pol.moveon.org/bybee/?id=16033-10220574-a6huldx&t=4

Thanks for all that you do.
