Sign the petition: Stop the TPP

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a bad deal for America. Join me in calling on Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi to oppose voting on the Trans-Pacific Partnership this year.

Dear MoveOn member,

On July 7, MoveOn members and allies will deliver a petition to Nancy Pelosi declaring that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a bad deal for America. Click here to sign the petition now and make sure your name is included.

The TPP is a trade deal that was negotiated behind closed doors with hundreds of corporate advisers carving out giveaways and tax breaks for their wealthy clients. It would make it easier to offshore good jobs, push down our wages, and undermine essential climate policies, affordable medicines, safe food, human rights, and an open Internet.1

The TPP is so unpopular that even the presumptive presidential candidates of both major parties oppose it—and maybe that's why members of Congress have been too scared to try to pass it. The danger, though, is that Congress will try to sneak it through during a lame-duck session, when they are less accountable to their constituents.

Will you join me in calling on Nancy Pelosi not to bring the TPP up for a lame-duck vote?

We call on you to publicly oppose any attempt to pass the Trans-Pacific Partnership in a lame-duck session.

We appreciate Rep. Pelosi’s leadership on many issues: good jobs, higher wages, strong climate policies and a livable environment, affordable medicines, safe food, and human rights—but the TPP presents an unprecedented threat to the advances we have made together. And though she opposed last summer's vote to grant Congress the Fast Track authority to rush a vote on the TPP,  she has not come out against a lame-duck session vote on this disastrous agreement.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Add your name: Stop the deportations now

Last week's Supreme Court ruling put millions back at risk of deportation, but there is more President Obama can do. Add your name to tell President Obama to stop the deportations now.

Dear MoveOn member,

Last week, a Supreme Court ruling put approximately five million undocumented parents back at risk of deportation and continued the exclusion of those who wouldn't have qualified under President Obama's executive action on immigration.1

But President Obama has the power to stop these inhumane deportations today.2 That's why I started a petition to President Barack Obama, which says:

President Obama, you have unused options to make immigration policy more humane. We demand you declare a moratorium on deportations immediately so more people are not harmed by the recent Supreme Court deadlock that puts approximately five million undocumented parents at risk of deportation, in addition to the seven million people who were excluded from the president's original ruling.

The Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) executive action temporarily relieved parents of DREAMers—undocumented young people who came to America as children—and lawful permanent residents from deportation and would have provided them with work authorization.

But the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and DAPA programs aren't the president's only option to protect migrant communities. As head of the executive branch, President Obama directs how and when enforcement resources are deployed. Under his administration, immigration enforcement agencies have expanded enormously, but the undocumented people who would've received deferred action or who could someday benefit from legalization shouldn't be subjected to their abuse.

While Republicans have been able to block reform and delay DAPA, they can't control how the president uses his executive authority for the implementation of immigration enforcement. He can make sure that families and communities are kept together by declaring a moratorium on deportations immediately.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Granite countertops–and a solar system

A simple switch to solar can raise your home's value—and help fight climate change.

Dear MoveOn member,

Granite countertops, a dishwasherand a solar system. These are things that increase your home’s value, and while a solar system is pretty new on this list, it’s becoming standard on new homes. Research shows a typical solar system adds $15,000 on average to a home’s value–on top of potential savings on your energy bill.1

Find out more about solar energy for your home by clicking here.

But how about the community and environment you’re living in? Switching to the sun’s clean energy protects our air and water and fights climate change and its devastating effects. For the people battling record heat and wildfires currently raging in eight Southwestern states, including Utah, California, and Arizona, their homes and lives are in danger.2

The stakes are high.

Click here to find out how solar can work for you. You’ll get a $750 discount on your solar system if you sign up via this email.

The story of your campaign

MoveOn members have won hundreds of campaigns. Start your own today.

Dear MoveOn member,

Here's how it'll go:

You see something that needs a change, so you start a petition on MoveOn's website.

You recruit your friends to sign it, and they, in turn, share it with their friends.

We send it out to some fellow MoveOn members, and they sign on too, so we send it to everyone in your city, your state, or maybe even all 8 million MoveOn members across the country.

Now that you have a bunch of people on board, you organize them. You use our petition tools to ask them to call their representatives, get more signers, and go to events.

MoveOn helps cover the cost of printing copies of your petition, and you deliver it to the person who has the authority to make the change. Your campaign makes headlines, and the decision maker is forced to respond.

And you win.

It's happened hundreds of times already. This could be the story of your campaign too. All you need is a good enough idea and the willingness to put in the time. Show us you mean business and we'll be with you every step of the way.

You really can do this. How about it?

Click here to start your own petition today.

Thanks for all you do.

Watch Now: Why Ohioans stand united against Trump

Trump has insulted, attacked, and incited violence against women, Latinos, Muslims, and more. And he is the face of the Republican Party.

Dear MoveOn member,

The Republican National Convention is setting up shop in Cleveland this summer and, with Donald Trump at the top of the ticket, it'll be a showcase of hate and vitriol.

Trump has insulted, attacked, and incited violence against women, Latinos, Muslims, and more. And he's the face of the Republican Party, whose leaders are standing by him in a show of party loyalty over any concern for basic dignity.

Instead of playing into Trump's hands with protests outside the convention, we've got a plan to turn Trump's moment in the spotlight into a way for us to show that regular Ohioans are united against hate. We're running a statewide door-knocking campaign to create neighbor-to-neighbor conversations that can win votes and change this election from the bottom up.

And after the convention, we'll take this campaign national to cities and towns across the country—to empower everyone to connect with their neighbors with a message that we stand united against hate.

Will you watch and share this kickoff video today to get your friends excited about taking down Trump?

Here's the scoop:

We've partnered with a group called Ohio’s Good Jobs, Strong Communities to launch Ohio Against Hate, a campaign to demonstrate that the hate, bigotry, and division of Donald Trump and of the Republican Party have no place in Ohio and no place in this country.

On July 16, over the weekend before the Republican National Convention, Ohio Against Hate will encourage 100,000 Ohio voters to stand up and speak out against Trump's hate-filled agenda. It will be the largest summertime, neighborhood-based, door-to-door and phone campaign in Ohio history.

Watch this video to hear why mothers, sons, and leaders are getting involved to stand against Trump’s hate and bigotry.

Over the past few weeks, the coalition of Ohio Against Hate has put together a spectacular team of leaders who have already organized volunteers to go door to door and begin having conversations.

Already, two MoveOn Field Directors, Gabby Andrade and Katie Werner, are leading leadership trainings in six different cities throughout Ohio to build up the power and enthusiasm of everyday Ohioans to carry out this important work of uniting their communities.

As this project develops and grows, we can't wait to share the stories of everyday people uniting with their friends, families, and neighbors to stand up to hate and bigotry.

Thanks for all you do.

Sign the petition: Tell Congress to take action vs. assault weapons

Add your name to the petition demanding Congress take action against gun violence.

Congressional Democrats just ended a bold day-long sit-in on the House floor demanding that Republicans finally stand up to the NRA and take up gun violence legislation. Congressional leaders have done their part. Now it's on us to keep the pressure up. Sign the petition telling Speaker Ryan to do his job and bring gun control bills to a vote.

Dear MoveOn member,

Dozens of Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Representative John Lewis, just ended a powerful, day-long sit-in demanding that Speaker Paul Ryan schedule a vote on commonsense gun safety legislation before they leave for the July 4 recess.1 This is only days after the U.S. Senate voted down gun safety measures, including one mandating universal background checks—failing to take action to protect Americans in the wake of one of the deadliest mass shootings in our nation's history.2

Will you join me in supporting Democrats who are demanding action against gun violence? Click here to sign the petition to House Speaker Paul Ryan, which says:

We call on you to take action against gun violence and schedule votes on the following measures:
  • Expand background checks on gun sales and strengthen the background check system.
  • Give the Department of Justice an avenue to block the sale of guns to suspected terrorists, with a robust due process and appeals system in place.
  • Close the Charleston loophole that allowed the Charleston shooter to purchase his weapons because his background check hadn't been completed within three days. He then used the weapons to kill nine people in their place of worship.
  • Ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Since Newtown, which woke us up to the tragedy of American gun violence, the House has not held a single vote on gun policy. NOT ONE.3

It's time to demand what America really wants and needs: Gun safety policy reform! Tell Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to schedule a vote on gun safety now!

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

BREAKING: Senate rejects background checks for gun sales

Senate Republicans have failed every victim of gun violence and their families.

Dear MoveOn member,

Senate Republicans have failed the victims of the Orlando massacre.

Just a few minutes ago, all but one Senate Republican (and three Democrats) voted no on requiring background checks on all gun sales. Through their refusal to act and their blind obedience to the NRA, they’ve made Congress absolutely complicit in the rampant epidemic of gun violence in this country.

After the massacre at Pulse, the gay nightclub in Orlando, many people offered “thoughts and prayers” for the mostly LGBTQ, mostly young, mostly Puerto Rican victims. Plenty of our leaders tweeted about their shock and their horror. But others were fed up with empty words from the very people who have the most power to prevent this from ever happening again. Among them was Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut, who said “Enough!” and held the Senate floor until Republicans were forced to call a vote tonight.

It’s clear that we cannot trust the Republicans in Congress to act in the best interests of the American people. So it’s time we commit to electing leaders who will.

Will you contribute $3 to Senator Chris Murphy and MoveOn? Your donation to Sen. Murphy will help show that lawmakers who will stand up for what is right have a broad base of support—and your donation to MoveOn will help defeat lawmakers who cash checks from the gun lobby to do nothing.

We need every gun purchase in this country to be accompanied by a thorough criminal background check. And we also need to pass a ban on assault weapons—weapons created for the express purpose of killing a lot of people as quickly as possible—to keep these weapons of war off of our streets and out of our communities.

Republicans in the Senate just told you that as long as they’re in power, there’s no way any of that will happen. If they can sleep at night knowing what that means (knowing that more lives will be lost because they refused to act)—well, that’s their prerogative. Here’s ours: electing leaders who will take concrete steps to protect the American people from gun violence.

Chip in $3 to help Chris Murphy and MoveOn keep fighting this battle. In honor of those we have lost, we will not give up until we change our laws to stop these tragedies from repeating themselves.

Thanks for all you do,

Today: Vote on gun sale background checks

Tonight's Senate vote could save lives.

Dear MoveOn member,

This evening, my Senate colleagues and I will vote on legislation requiring background checks as part of all gun sales, and I need your help right now to get it passed. It's important that every senator—including gun-safety champions and those who have stood with the gun lobby before—hear support for this common sense measure today.

Will you phone your senators and my colleagues, Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, and ask them to stand with me to make our communities safer by passing legislation that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and others who shouldn’t have them?

Here’s where to phone:

    Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542

    Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

You can say: "I urge you to stand up to the NRA and vote 'YES' tonight on S.2934, which requires background checks as part of all gun sales. This is a common sense measure supported by Democrats, Republicans, and the majority of gun owners. This bill will save lives and I hope that you will vote 'YES'."

When you’re done, please report the details of your call by clicking here.

After last week’s tragic shooting in Orlando, FL—one of the deadliest mass shootings in our nation’s history—it's urgent that Congress take meaningful action and do its part to stem the epidemic levels of gun violence that plague our nation.

That’s why last week, with the support of more than 30 of my colleagues, I led a filibuster on the Senate floor for almost 15 hours. One of my demands was that my colleagues agree to hold a vote on background checks as part of all gun sales. And I can tell you that as the hours progressed, my colleagues heard your calls for change grow louder and louder.

Will you phone Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand right now and ask them to vote “YES” on a bill that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and others who shouldn’t have them?

    Here’s where to phone:

      Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542

      Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

You can say: "I urge you to stand up to the NRA and vote 'YES' tonight on S.2934, which requires background checks as part of all gun sales. This is a common sense measure supported by Democrats, Republicans, and the majority of gun owners. This bill will save lives and I hope that you will vote 'YES'."

When you’re done, please report the details of your call by clicking here.

Whether it’s a shooting in an urban center, or mass shootings fueled by racism, rage against women, or homophobia, I shudder to think about what it says about us as a nation if we don’t make every effort to end this carnage.

This bill will save lives. Please pick up the phone and call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand right now.

      Thanks for all you do.

      Bernie

It doesn't matter what happens from here. Bernie Sanders has already succeeded.

      Dear MoveOn member,

It doesn’t matter what happens from here. Bernie Sanders has already succeeded.

At the start, Bernie was labeled a "fringe candidate"—a 74-year-old, self-described democratic socialist, who stood zero chance against the Democratic political establishment, the mainstream media, and the moneyed interests.

      Then Bernie won 22 states.

And in almost every state—even in those he lost—Bernie won vast majorities of voters under 30, including young women and Latinos. And most voters under 45. His campaign has helped shape the next generation.

Bernie's also brought a bold, progressive agenda into the mainstream—from a $15 minimum wage, to busting up the biggest Wall Street banks, to free tuition at public universities.

But we need to act fast to cement Bernie's agenda into the Democratic Party platform. Public hearings have already begun on the platform, and it will be drafted over the next two weeks, so the clock is ticking.

That's why I want to ask you to chip in $2.70 right now to MoveOn, the largest organization to endorse Bernie, so they have the resources to fight to make Bernie's agenda a core part of the Democratic platform. They have a great plan (read on!), but they need to raise $270,000 to ramp up their campaign in time. Can you help out?

Yes, I'll chip in $2.70 now to MoveOn to help win the most progressive Democratic Party platform in history.

Bernie has accomplished so much without Super PACs or big money from corporations, Wall Street, and billionaires. He did it with small contributions (averaging $27) from millions of us. He's proven that a national campaign can be funded by the people, not the special interests.

And he’s inspired millions of us to get involved in politics and to fight the most important and basic of all fights, the fight on which all else depends—the fight to reclaim our economy and democracy from the moneyed interests.

Bernie's courage in taking on the political establishment has emboldened millions of us to stand up and demand that our voices be heard.

With the primary wrapping up, we need to work hard, right now, to get Bernie's agenda into the Democratic Party platform—which sets the party's agenda for the next four years. MoveOn can have a big impact—with your help.

Click here to chip in $2.70 to MoveOn to help put Bernie's bold policies into the Democratic Party platform.

      MoveOn's plan is to:

      • Collect and submit hundreds of thousands of petition signatures to the Platform Drafting Committee on the issues that Bernie has been championing: a $15 minimum wage, banning fracking, free tuition for public universities, expanding Social Security, and more. MoveOn will deliver the signatures in person.
      • Ask MoveOn’s millions of members to send testimony and personal stories making the case for Bernie's agenda. MoveOn will compile all of the comments, formally submit them to the Platform Drafting Committee, and elevate the most compelling stories through a high-impact social media campaign.
      • Work with progressive champions on the committee on a shared strategy to maximize our leverage. We'll work behind the scenes, and build public support for amendments at key moments to achieve the best possible results.

Chip in $2.70 now to bring Bernie's political revolution to Democratic Party platform.

Bernie has ignited a movement. We're in this together, and we'll never give up.

      Thanks for all you do.

VIDEO: Robert Reich's 8 reasons to dump Trump

The only way we're going to stop Donald Trump from reaching the White House is by building a massive movement of people who see Trump for what he is.

      Dear MoveOn member,

The Republican Party is supporting for president of the United States a divisive, racist, fear-mongering bully.

Donald Trump is a liar. A woman hater. A man who spreads dangerous, baseless conspiracy theories and believes in torture.

In Robert Reich's latest video with MoveOn, he lays out eight reasons Trump is such an extreme threat to our nation and why Republican leaders must act in the best interest of our nation—not their party—and flat-out reject him. Please watch it. And please share it with your family and friends.

      8ReasonsToDumpTrump

The only way we're going to stop Donald Trump from reaching the White House is by building a massive movement of people who see Trump for what he is: a menace to our nation who's simply unfit to lead.

This new video by Robert Reich and MoveOn makes that case (and then some). Please watch and share it now with everyone you know.

BREAKING: Sen. Chris Murphy is standing up to the NRA on the Senate floor!

Something courageous and inspiring is happening in Washington, D.C. right now.

      Dear MoveOn member,

Something courageous and inspiring is happening in Washington, D.C. right now. Senator Chris Murphy has had enough of senseless gun-related tragedies and he's nearing his eleventh hour of a filibuster for common sense gun reform.1

Sen. Murphy is fed up with Congress’s inability to take meaningful action in the face of an epidemic of gun violence. And now it's up to MoveOn members to stand with him as he stands up to the NRA, which has long been the barrier to enacting necessary legislation.

Can you send a message of support to Sen. Murphy? You can also pledge to donate $1 or more for every hour of the senator's filibuster, and we'll use the funds to support his bold efforts.

Click here to stand with Sen. Murphy as he fights for common sense gun laws.

Earlier today, Sen. Murphy took to the Senate floor to honor the innocent people murdered at an Orlando LGBT club—and elsewhere—and said he would filibuster as long as he could in an effort to force the Senate to take up meaningful, common sense gun reform.2 And Senate Democrats are piling on.3

In the aftermath of recent gun-related tragedies—Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, Aurora—we’ve seen the same response: a few days of shock, some hollow promises for action, and then politicians slink away, too afraid to stand up to the NRA.

But not today. Thanks to Sen. Murphy.

The majority of Americans want common sense gun reform, including the half a million MoveOn members who signed a petition this week calling for an assault weapons ban.4,5

That's why MoveOn members stand with Sen. Murphy and other leaders pushing for urgently-needed reform. Today and as long as it takes to win.

Click here to pledge your support and send words of encouragement directly to Sen. Murphy, which we’ll make sure he sees. You can also pledge $1 or more for each hour he filibusters, to encourage him to continue as long as possible.

Sen. Murphy said today, “I’m going to remain on this floor until we get some signal, some sign that we can ... get a path forward on addressing this epidemic in a meaningful, bipartisan way."6

Senator Murphy is doing his part. Let’s do ours and stand with him.

      Thanks for all you do.

For my friends: Ban assault weapons now

Seek justice for the victims of the terrible tragedy in Orlando. Sign the petition calling to ban assault weapons.

      Dear MoveOn member,

On Sunday morning, my hometown of Orlando fell victim to a heinous act of hatred and violence. A man filled with hate and armed with an assault weapon walked into a popular LGBT club, Pulse, and killed at least 49 innocent people, wounding as many more.1

I watched as the nation awoke and began to process the news asking "Why?" I watched as my colleagues at MoveOn sprung into action and asked, "How do we help?" But I was faced with a very different question: "Are my friends alive?"

I will never be able to explain what it feels like to hear from someone you love who you feared dead. I will also never be able to explain what it feels like when you don't.

Losing my friends and watching as a community that I love struggles with such terrible loss has been one of the hardest experiences of my life. Seeing the faces of young queer people—predominantly people of color enjoying the club's "Latin Night"—who went out to dance, sing, and celebrate in a space meant to be free of the homophobia and violence that many often faced outside of those doors, is nearly impossible to do without crying. But it also serves as a reminder of the real human toll that violence can have on our country.

There's so much work we need to do. We need to stand up against homophobia. We need to avoid falling into the trap of responding with Islamophobia. We need to make sure love wins over hate. And by all means, we need to keep mass-killing weapons out of the hands of violent individuals.

Please click here and add your name alongside more than 400,000 seeking justice for the victims of this tragedy by calling to ban assault weapons.

I will be ok. The LGBT community will be ok. Orlando will be ok. America will be ok. But only if we fight back.

The attacks that shook the nation in Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, Aurora, and Orlando all have something in common. The assailants used an assault weapon.2

And unless we do something soon they will have something else in common: Congress will have done nothing to seek justice and prevent these terrible acts from happening again.

Right now, mass-killing weapons are available for purchase online, at trade shows, and at neighborhood gun brokers across our nation. The media has begun calling assault weapons the "weapon of choice" for mass shooters.3 This has to stop.

Click here to add to the growing call to ban assault weapons like the one used in the Orlando tragedy.

As I process this terrible moment in history and in my life I'm reminded of this quote by Walter Anderson:

Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have—life itself.

We don't have to sit immobilized in the face of hate. I choose to rise from the pain and take action. I hope that you will too.

Click here to join me and 400,000 others in saying that enough is enough; it's time to seek justice for the victims of mass shootings and ban assault weapons.

      Donald Trump's outrageous speech

Today, hate and bigotry were broadcast on televisions across our nation.

      Dear MoveOn member,

Today, hate and bigotry were broadcast on televisions across our nation. In his speech about Sunday's massacre, Donald Trump spewed vitriol about immigrants and Muslims.1 He promoted an immature, vicious response. He mocked those who begged for peace.2 And he spread lies about the terrorist attack in Orlando.3

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has exploited a violent, heartbreaking tragedy that took nearly fifty innocent lives to promote his own violent, heartless agenda. It's disgusting.

Even worse? He could bring this venom of hate and violence to the White House. We can’t let that happen.

Help us stop hate in its tracks by chipping in $3 to MoveOn’s plan to stop a Trump presidency.

In his speech, Trump claimed that nobody could be an ally to the LGBT community unless they opposed immigration. This idea that he is promoting—that we must single out one group of people to hate—contributes to these kinds of violent situations in the first place.

We know that a President Trump would only make our nation a more dangerous and hateful place—a place where these kinds of tragedies would likely become ever more common. That’s why we’re asking you to join us in stopping him from ever reaching the White House.

Contribute $3 to MoveOn’s plan to stop a Trump presidency in its tracks right here and right now.

In response to this tragedy, Americans are standing up to say, "This is not who we are." But speaking out is not enough. We must take action to keep this hate-filled bigot from ever becoming president.

      Thanks for all you do,

Add your name: Ban assault weapons now

Will you join me in calling on our lawmakers to help curb gun deaths in this country by ending the sale of automatic weapons in America?

      Dear MoveOn member,

At least 50 people were killed last night in a horrific mass shooting at a gay club in Orlando, FL. At least another 53 were injured.1 As the news continues to peel back the layers on this terrible, tragic shooting and we grieve and mourn with Orlando, we must act now for common sense gun laws and to ban assault rifles. We must stop these mass shootings from tearing apart our communities. Click here to sign the petition, which says:

Military-grade assault weapons should not be used by civilians and have no place in our cities and towns.

Orlando. Sandy Hook. San Bernardino. Aurora.

What do these horrific shootings have in common? The AR-15.

This military-grade assault rifle was used to murder at least 50 people in Orlando, 26 people in Sandy Hook, 14 people in San Bernardino, and 12 people in Aurora.2

Right now, such a mass-killing weapon is available for purchase on-line, at trade shows, and at neighborhood brokers across our nation.

The AR-15 and automatic assault weapons like it have no place in our cities and towns. They have no place on our streets.

We need to ban all assault weapons now and enact other commonsense gun reform.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Stop dirty coal! Block the proposed Millenium coal terminal!

We have just days left to stop a massive coal terminal proposal from going through. Add your name now.

      Dear MoveOn member,

We have just days to stop a massive coal terminal proposal from going through. The proposed Millennium coal export terminal in Longview, WA, would put local communities and our climate at risk. It would ship 44 million tons of coal annually to Asia through the Pacific Northwest.1

My organization, Earthjustice, has represented local communities opposed to the project for years. Now we have just days left to submit public comments on the draft environmental impact statement for this massive project.2 We must make our voices heard now against this massive coal project. That's why I started a petition to the Washington Department of Ecology and Cowlitz County, which says:

I support the "no action" alternative in the Millennium Bulk Terminal's draft environmental impact statement (EIS). Millennium's proposed coal export terminal would harm communities throughout the Northwest. The project harms our health and safety, air and water quality, and natural resources. I urge you to protect public health and natural resources. Reject coal export.

The transportation of this coal poses a risk for everyone in its path.

The coal would be sourced from mines in Montana and Wyoming, then loaded into uncovered boxcars to be transported by rail to the proposed terminal on the Columbia River. Coal dust from the mile-long coal trains would pollute nearby communities along the rail route. Once the coal arrived at the Longview terminal, it would sit in enormous open-air piles, where winds would blow coal dust into the city of Longview, creating a public health hazard.3

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Coal's future is bleak—Millennium backer Arch Coal filed for bankruptcy in January, and its dreams of mining in Montana's Otter Creek are over.

But Big Coal still wants to have a dirty coal chute to Asia as its last hope for keeping this unhealthy industry. Fortunately, the movement to stop dirty coal from polluting our towns and rivers is bigger and stronger than ever. Now is the time to raise our voices and lock out dirty coal once and for all.

Please stand up to Big Coal today. Let's make sure this proposal is stopped in its tracks once and for all.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

      Thanks!

Fwd: The Stanford rape case making headlines

Add your name: Judge Persky must be removed from the bench immediately.

Hi Eddie!—Nearly 1 million people have already signed petitions calling for the judge who handed down a slap-on-the-wrist sentence to Stanford student Brock Turner, who raped an unconscious woman behind a dumpster, to resign. On Friday at noon Pacific Time, our allies at UltraViolet will be delivering these petition signatures in San Francisco to the Committee on Judicial Performance demanding that they take action against Judge Aaron Persky. Will you sign the petition now so that they can deliver your name tomorrow? –Maria

      Dear MoveOn member,

Judge Aaron Persky sentenced convicted rapist Brock Allen Turner to just six months in county jail and probation after he was found guilty of raping an unconscious woman outside of a fraternity party on the Stanford campus.1 In his remarks at sentencing, Judge Persky justified this light sentence out of concern for Turner's future and the impact the verdict will have on his life.2

Giving a lenient sentence to a convicted rapist is unacceptable. Women who are raped deserve justice. Will you sign this petition demanding that the Committee on Judicial Performance remove Judge Persky immediately?

Judge Aaron Persky's failure to hold Brock Turner accountable for the rape and his dismissive comments at sentencing show that he cannot be trusted to dispense justice. He must be removed from the bench immediately.

Brock Turner, a Stanford University student, was convicted of raping an unconscious woman on the Stanford campus. Two graduate students found him on top of the woman, behind a dumpster, outside of a fraternity party.

But California Judge Aaron Persky sentenced Turner to just six months in a county jail, saying that prison would have "a severe impact on him." It's worth noting that Turner's father had called on the judge to give him only probation, saying he had already "paid a steep price" for "20 minutes of action."3

As a Stanford graduate, I'm disgusted that this rape occurred and I am outraged by Judge Persky's lenient sentence. Join me in demanding that the Committee on Judicial Performance remove him from the bench immediately.

Rapists must be held accountable for their actions, and judges who refuse to hold them accountable must be removed from the bench.

The Committee on Judicial Performance has the authority to remove a judge. If enough of us speak out and demand justice, we can ensure judges like Judge Persky must value the life of the woman who was raped over the consequences of a just sentence for the rapist.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

      Thanks for all you do.
