Syria

Dear MoveOn member,

In the wake of recent reports of the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government, the Obama administration is preparing for air strikes against Syria.

MoveOn members are reacting strongly, including many folks who are deeply concerned about the path we seem to be on, and wondering what we can individually do.

Here are three steps you can take.

1) Educate yourself—and others—through our Video Teach-In on Syria. We raced to pull together an emergency video briefing on Syria yesterday with several noted progressive thought leaders. The discussion provided context on what's happening in Syria, explored reactions in the U.S. and around the world, and outlined some of the major concerns with—and alternatives to—military strikes.

Click here to watch the Video Teach-In on Syria and pass it along:

2. Speak out on how you feel about U.S. strikes against Syria.

MoveOn members and partner organizations have started circulating a wide range of petitions responding to the looming threat of military strikes. Just a few hours ago, President Obama committed to seek approval from Congress for military action—so we WILL have a chance to make our voices heard with our elected representatives in Washington.2

This petition from MoveOn Council member Rachel Royce in North Carolina is one you might find compelling:

We urge you to show real leadership in protecting the people of Syria with a more creative, effective, and prudent approach than military action.
  • Galvanize world leaders to demand a multilateral cease-fire
  • Arrange to evacuate people who choose to flee harm's way
  • Care for the evacuees
  • Assist with re-settlement once the civil war has ended
Do not be fooled into thinking that war-making will protect or defend a population.

(If this approach doesn't speak to you, remember: anyone can start their own petition at moveon.org—take a look at other MoveOn member campaigns on Syria here, or start your own!)

3. Contribute to organizations providing emergency assistance to the Syrian people.

The group Doctors Without Borders is providing emergency healthcare inside Syria through six field hospitals. They have also worked with the victims of the reported chemical weapons attacks.

Click here to make a donation to Doctors Without Borders.

Thanks for your care and concern—and for all you do.

Obamacare up in smoke?

URGENT: We're about to launch a big, ambitious push to take on right-wing lies on Obamacare. We've set a new fundraising goal of $250,000—and extended our deadline to Sunday. Will you donate now? Click here to chip in.

Urgent: Right-wing groups have launched a multi-million-dollar misinformation campaign to convince young people that they're better off uninsured than participating in Obamacare. Their goal is to make Barack Obama's signature achievement fail, no matter what the cost. Can you donate $5 to help fight back?

Chip in $5
Dear MoveOn member,

Starting on October 1, America will take a huge step towards universal health care. That's the day that 22 million uninsured Americans will be able to start getting affordable health insurance under Obamacare.

But now, with just weeks to go, right-wing groups have launched a multi-million-dollar campaign to torpedo Obamacare before it even gets started.1

Their plan: Mislead young people about how the law works so they get scared and don't enroll. The problem is that it really could work because if younger, healthier people don't participate, then costs will skyrocket and Obamacare will fail. Period.

It's disgusting—people could actually die because they don't get the health insurance they need, and our entire health care system would be thrown into chaos. But these groups are so blinded by hate for Barack Obama that they'll do anything to make his signature program go up in smoke.

To fight back, MoveOn is launching an urgent campaign of our own to debunk right-wing lies and go after Republican politicians and media outlets that spread misinformation—but we need to raise at least $250,000 in the next 72 hours to make sure we have the resources to set the record straight.

Can you donate in $5 to fund our urgent campaign to save Obamacare?

Yes, I can contribute $5.

Conservatives are so desperate to stop Obamacare from succeeding that they're literally telling people to "burn your Obamacare card"—even though these cards don't even exist.2

Our plan is to counter their misinformation campaign with a laser-like focus on social media and the websites where young people spend the most time. Young people live on the Internet today, and reaching them online is far cheaper than with traditional TV advertising.

Just for starters, we'll be able to put an ad on the Facebook pages of 18- to 35-year-olds across America, and we'll also run ads in college newspapers—right as students return to school—explaining the truth about what Obamacare means for young people.

We've seen these kinds of right-wing scare tactics work before—lies about Social Security have convinced an entire generation of young people that that program won't be around in the future. And polling shows that awareness about the new program is dangerously low among the young people who need health insurance most.3

We can't just sit back and hope for the best. And the clock's ticking. We've got just weeks to fight back—and we've got just 72 hours until Sunday, when we'll look at what's come in, decide how big we can go with this campaign, and get started. Can you chip in?

Yes, I'll chip in $5 to make sure right-wing extremists can't kill health care reform.

We know from the past that MoveOn can run effective campaigns to debunk lies and misinformation. During the last election, we lampooned Mitt Romney's lies with truth and humor, and it worked.

So, can you help us debunk the lies again?

We've reached a critical moment. Summer's ending. School's starting. And with just weeks to go, young people are starting to tune in. We've got a plan. We're literally ready to wire money to our ad vendor and get started. But we're 100% member-funded—and we can only do this campaign the right way if enough MoveOn members chip in.

MoveOn members were integral in passing the Affordable Care Act. We've come too far and fought too hard to let right-wing extremists succeed at making sure health care reform fails. Can you help out? Click below to donate $5 and help fund our urgent campaign stop the right-wing effort to kill Obamacare before it gets started.

Yes, I'll chip in $5 to make sure right-wing extremists can't kill health care reform.

Thanks for all you do.

Do this for Trayvon Martin

Dear New York MoveOn member,

I'm Jason Lee, a MoveOn member in Hollywood, CA, and I started a petition to the United States Congress and President Barack Obama, which says:

The End Racial Profiling Act seeks to make racial profiling illegal and train law enforcement officers to act based on behavior instead of race or religion in their jobs. Now is the time for us to move closer to a society without blatant prejudice. No one should be mistreated, wrongly arrested, harassed, or killed based on their racial identity. Pass this legislation right away #forTrayvon.

As we live in the aftermath of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's unexpected death at the hands of George Zimmerman, I want to encourage each and every one of you to use your voice for change. Millions of people across the nation witnessed the injustice of Zimmerman's subsequent acquittal of all charges in trial—something we must fight to prevent from happening again. We at the I AM READY Foundation and One Million People United for Change movement, have teamed up with Trayvon's family to directly benefit the Trayvon Martin Foundation and Change For Trayvon in our efforts to keep Trayvon's legacy alive. We believe joining MoveOn.org's campaign to end rampant racial profiling in our nation's law enforcement through the End Racial Profiling Act is the first step to balancing the system. We cannot make a powerful impact that will last and spread our message, hope, peace, and justice, without your help.

We need each of you to stand with us #forTrayvon and join our One Million People United for Change campaign as we continue to reach the masses across the nation. We have already garnered the support of celebrities passionate about change, including Meagan Good, Chris Brown, Ledisi, Tank, Omari Hardwick, Dawn Richard, and so many more. With your support and action, there's nothing we can't accomplish to ensure Trayvon's legacy lives on for decades to come.

Can we count on you to stand with us #forTrayvon and act to effectively end racial profiling in America?

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Dear MoveOn member,

Ever heard that famous Frederick Douglass quote? "Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will." That's as true today as it was 125 years ago—and it's what MoveOn is all about.

In 1998, our founders started a simple online petition demanding that Congress stop obsessing over a sex scandal and "move on" to more important issues. They shared it with friends and within days, they had hundreds of thousands of signatures. Then the story blew up in the media and helped shift the focus at the time in Washington away from scandal towards more serious issues.

Today, we're seeing progress on issue after issue—marriage quality, immigrationNSA wiretapping, and more—progress that would be impossible if people hadn't stepped up and demanded change.

But there are countless fights that still need to be won, and that's why we're so excited about MoveOn's public petition website, where you demand the progress you want to see by starting your own petition. It's easy to get started—just click here:

This is what stopping fracking looks like

Dear MoveOn member,

On Thursday, MoveOn members joined Americans Against Fracking—and actress and activist Daryl Hannah—at the White House to deliver 650,000 public comments to the Bureau of Land Management demanding a ban on fracking on public and Native American lands. All told, concerned Americans submitted more than 1 million commentsthe largest unified outpouring ever from Americans calling for a change in course on fracking:

Daryl Hannah calls for a ban on fracking

MoveOn leader Mike Hersh

While that was going on in D.C., the president met boisterous crowds in Buffalo and Syracuse, New York, all calling on him to say no to fracking. Activists in New York have succeeded in keeping fracking out of the Empire State, and they're following Governor Cuomo—who joined President Obama in Syracuse—everywhere he goes, to make sure he keeps New York frack-free:

Syracuse, NY

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the dangerous practice of injecting cancer-causing chemicals, sand, and massive amounts of water at high pressure deep underground to release hard-to-reach oil and gas deposits.

President Obama says he is serious about curbing climate change. But he's also overseen the near-doubling of natural gas production, using fracking, from 2010 to 2012.1 Methane, which is released in fracking for natural gas, is at least 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas over the critical 100-year period, and scientists have called fracking a "gangplank to a warm future."2 That's why MoveOn members have joined our allies to take the message directly to President Obama: "Yes we can ban fracking!"

But not just President Obama! We're fighting back on multiple fronts. Earlier this month, twenty-two-year-old community college student and MoveOn leader Ashley Williams delivered more than 16,000 petition signatures to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, demanding that he block a mining project near Illinois' most popular state park—Starved Rock State Park—for the special silica sand used in fracking that threatens the park, Ashley's hometown of Ottawa, Illinois, and workers' health. Here's Ashley, right before she met with the Governor's chief of staff for legislative affairs:

Ashley Williams

Last week, MoveOn members and our friends at CREDO rallied in Ventura County, California—where fracking is happening now—calling for a statewide ban on fracking, and earning headlines in the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Ventura County Star. California has 15 billion barrels of heavy crude oil buried underground—that if fracked and burned, would create nearly as much global warming pollution as the Keystone XL pipeline:3

California

That's not all. Also this month, Kentucky MoveOn member Corlia Logsdon made headlines and got Governor Steve Beshear's attention when she and 200 supporters delivered thousands of petition signatures to Governor Beshear, calling on him to stop the construction of the Bluegrass Pipeline that would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, and destroy her community's land:

Bluegrass Pipeline
I could go on and on. MoveOn members in 37 states have launched local campaigns to protect our climate and our communities from fracking, and hundreds of thousands from across every state submitted comments to President Obama. I wanted to make sure you got a glimpse of the amazing leadership among our ranks.

Can you share this image on Facebook to inspire more people to rise up to ban fracking?

Re: New York Times stunner

MoveOn member—Just making sure you saw this email. MoveOn members have already pitched in over $140,000, but we need to raise $250,000 for this campaign. Will you donate now? Click here to chip in.
Republicans are trying to steal control of the U.S. Senate by making it harder to vote.

Pitch in to help defend the right to vote and stop Republicans from stealing the 2014 election.

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

This is stunning: The New York Times' data wizard Nate Silver—who predicted the 2012 election results state-by-state with uncanny accuracy—is now projecting that, "Republicans [are] close to even-money to win control of the [Senate] after next year's elections."1

It's the worst-case scenario: Republicans win a majority in the Senate, and we can kiss the rest of President Obama's agenda goodbye.

To make things worse, they have a plan to steal the 2014 election starting right now by making it harder for seniors, students, poor people, and African-Americans to vote.

Back in May, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. Since then, Republicans in key states have been racing to purge voter rolls, eliminate early voting, and require new photo IDs to vote—anything they can do to make it harder to vote.

And in an election as close as this one will be, even 1-2 percentage points could turn the tide.

You think the fights over the budget, Obamacare, and immigration are bad now? Imagine Mitch McConnell in control of the U.S. Senate. Try getting any pro-choice judge confirmed for the Supreme Court against a GOP majority. Or stopping cuts to Social Security. Forget it.

The 2014 election is hugely important—and we can't let Republicans steal it now. So if you think you'll want to get involved sometime next year, I ask you: Please get engaged right now.

We're raising $250,000 this week to launch a 'Let Us Vote' Campaign to fight back right now—while it can make the greatest difference. Will you help?

How blatant are the GOP's efforts? North Carolina just passed what's widely being called the most extreme voter suppression law in the country. It requires Voter ID, reduces early voting, and ends same-day registration.2

Why there? Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina is just one of four Democrats up for re-election next year in a state won by Mitt Romney. If Republicans can reduce turnout in North Carolina and defeat her, it'll drastically improve their odds of taking the Senate.

To reverse the effects of this effort, we have a 3-pronged plan of attack:

1. We'll launch state-by-state campaigns to roll back discriminatory voter suppression laws, rules and regulations when state legislatures are back in session.

2. We'll prepare a traditional and online media blitz, highlighting both the actions of extreme politicians like North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory and the stories of heroic individual voters whose rights are being trampled.

3. We'll organize an aggressive counter-intimidation campaign to mobilize the very same voters who are being disenfranchised. This tactic was proven to work last election, when showing voters what Republicans are really up to actually motivated unlikely voters to overcome barriers to get to the polls.3

We helped beat back the GOP voter suppression machine in 2012—and we can do it again—but all of us need to help. And we can't afford to wait until next year. Are you in to support our "Let Us Vote" campaign?

Thanks for all you do.

Tell Rep. Jared Polis to stand up for immigration reform

House Speaker John Boehner is stalling comprehensive immigration reform. But there is a way to bypass him. House Democrats can introduce the broadly supported Senate bill and file what's called a "discharge petition." We need just 218 votes—every Democrat and 17 Republicans—and then the House can vote on comprehensive immigration reform.

MoveOn members across the country are signing this petition from Michelle Medina, a fellow MoveOn member in Boulder, CO, asking Rep. Jared Polis, a leader within the New Democrat Coalition, to stand up for comprehensive immigration reform by supporting a discharge petition. Click here to sign the petition.

Dear Inwood MoveOn member,

I'm Michelle Medina, a MoveOn member in Boulder, CO, and I started a petition to Rep. Jared Polis (CO-2), which says:

A discharge petition is the most viable option to pass comprehensive immigration reform this fall. It only takes 218 votes to file a discharge petition—that's every Democrat in Congress and 17 Republicans. Support for the discharge petition is growing in the media and among members of Congress. Therefore, I am requesting that you sign on as a supporter of the discharge petition for comprehensive immigration reform . Sincerely,

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Re: Obama's first big fracking decision

Hi there—The deadline to submit comments on the Obama administration's draft rules for fracking on public lands is this Friday, August 23—and on Thursday, we'll join allies in Washington, DC at a rally to deliver these comments to the Bureau of Land Management.

More than 125,000 MoveOn members have already submitted comments calling on President Obama to ban fracking on public lands. Can you help us reach 150,000 comments today by signing this petition from our friends at Food & Water Watch, calling on President Obama to ban fracking on public and Native American lands?

President Obama: Don't frack our public lands

Sign the Petition!

Dear New York MoveOn member,

The Obama Administration is proposing new rules for oil and gas fracking on federal lands, including those in the national forest system, federal lands that are near many treasured national parks, and Indian lands.

One of the things that makes America great is our vast and cherished spaces. Millions of acres across our beautiful country are public, but now this land—and many of our favorite iconic landscapes—are under threat from fracking.

That's why I started a petition to President Barack Obama and Sally Jewell, Secretary of the Interior, which says:

I am calling for a ban on fracking on all federal lands.

This land is our land and should be managed for the good of the people, not corporate profits for the oil and gas industry.

The Bureau of Land Management's proposed rules for regulating hydraulic fracturing on Federal and Indian lands are not only weak, but they do not take into account all of the harmful processes required to frack for oil and gas.

The best way to protect our air, water, wildlife, climate and public health is simply to prohibit this inherently dangerous form of fossil fuel extraction on public lands.

The Obama administration is accepting comments on the new fracking rules until August 23. On August 22, we'll join allies to deliver hundreds of thousands of comments, including yours, to President Obama and Secretary Jewell. Please add your name today!

Thanks!

Obama's first big fracking decision

Below is an email from Sarah Alexander of the organization Food & Water Watch. Sarah started a petition on the MoveOn website, where anyone can start their own online petition.

New York Times stunner

This tactic was proven to work last election, when showing voters what Republicans are really up to actually motivated unlikely voters to overcome barriers to get to the polls.4

We helped beat back the GOP voter suppression machine in 2012—and we can do it again—but all of us need to help. And we can't afford to wait until next year. Are you in to support our "Let Us Vote" campaign?

Thanks for all you do.

Call Representative Gregory Meeks and ask him to support a discharge petition

Can you call Representative Gregory Meeks? Tell him: "Please don't let Speaker Boehner continue to stand in the way of Comprehensive immigration reform. Introduce the bipartisan Senate bill in the House and support a discharge petition."

Representative Gregory Meeks
District Offices:
    Arverne: 347-230-4032
    Jamaica: 718-725-6000

Report Your Call!
Dear fellow MoveOn member,

My name is Stephanie Hamm, and I've lived in Texas for 38 years. As someone from a border state, I'm 110% committed to the fight for comprehensive immigration reform, which includes protections for family unity, and a clear roadmap to citizenship.

And we could have reform right now. But so far Speaker Boehner, who has the power to bring the bipartisan Senate bill up for an an up-or-down vote, has refused to do so.

We can't wait for Speaker Boehner any longer.

This August recess marks a critical moment for immigration reform. The pressure on the House to take action coming out of the recess is mounting. And if comprehensive immigration reform doesn't pass in the fall, the opportunity could be lost. I've joined other MoveOn immigration leaders to do everything I can to make sure that Congress hears us loud and clear.

That's why this week, MoveOn members and allies across the country are calling Democratic members of Congress and asking them to bypass Speaker Boehner to save immigration reform. We want them to introduce the Senate bill, which passed with broad bipartisan support, then use a discharge petition to force an up-or-down vote in the House.

Filing a discharge petition is the best option we have to pass comprehensive immigration reform this fall. It only takes 218 votes to file one—that's every Democrat in Congress and 17 Republicans. Support for the discharge petition is growing in the media and among members of Congress.

Can you call Representative Gregory Meeks? Tell him: "Please don't let Speaker Boehner continue to stand in the way of Comprehensive immigration reform. Introduce the bipartisan Senate bill in the House and support a discharge petition."

Here's where to call:

It's essential that members of Congress hear our voices loud and clear. Last Saturday, I joined other MoveOn members and immigration allies to participate in a town hall event for Representative Blake Farenthold here in Texas. Rep. Farenthold is a Republican who may support comprehensive immigration reform. Our presence at the town hall made an impact especially when one of our members shared a story about how she had waited 20 years to gain citizenship because of how broken the system is.

During the rest of August, we need to make sure that we are calling members of Congress' offices, visiting them, and attending town halls so that they take our message back with them to Congress in September.

Click here to make and report your call today.

Thanks for all you do.
