Mar: Response needed

We recently sent you an important membership survey about our priorities and political strategy for the next phase of the 2020 election fight. But we didn't hear from you, Mar.

Hi, Mar!

We recently sent you an important membership survey about our priorities and political strategy for the next phase of the 2020 election fight. But we haven't heard from you yet.

MoveOn has always been member-led—and one key way we make decisions is by listening to what MoveOn members like you have to say, so that we know which campaigns and tactics to prioritize in the weeks and months ahead. Will you weigh in by completing our short survey?

Click here now to complete MoveOn's Member Priorities Survey by Wednesday to make sure your response is included in this week's report.

As we make decisions on our top priorities for the weeks and months ahead, hearing from as many dedicated MoveOn members as possible about our tactics and strategies is critically important.

We just concluded our official Joe Biden endorsement vote at noon ET today. And we will announce the results tomorrow. But our election efforts go far beyond just the White House.

Protests to end police brutality and systemic racism are continuing in the streets—and we're working to support Black-led organizations doing that critical work.

COVID-19 is ravaging communities—and we're fighting to help keep people safe and stave off an economic depression by demanding that Congress choose people over profits.

The U.S. Postal Service is just months away from going out of business—and we're running campaigns to keep this essential public service from being destroyed by Donald Trump.

And we're working to flip at least four seats to end Republican control of the Senate, without pulling any resources out of our absolutely crucial push to defeat Trump in November—our biggest election campaign in 22 years.

As we make decisions on our top priorities for the weeks and months ahead, hearing from as many dedicated MoveOn members as possible about our tactics and strategies is critically important.

Please click here now to complete MoveOn's Member Priorities Survey. To ensure your response is included in this week's report, we need to hear from you by Wednesday.

We will use the results of this survey to inform our work going forward in this historic and unprecedented time.

Thanks for all you do.

$600 weekly unemployment benefit must be extended past July 31 (petition)

Add your name to call on Congress to extend the $600 weekly unemployment assistance during the coronavirus pandemic.

Click here and add your name to the petition calling on Congress to extend the $600 weekly unemployment assistance during the coronavirus pandemic.

Dear MoveOn member,

The $600 federal unemployment boost is set to end on July 31.

The CARES Act passed by Congress includes a provision that gives an additional $600 per week to the unemployed Americans who lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic. This money is a lifeline for millions who are out of work and their families.

Democrats in Congress are fighting to extend this extra benefit past July 31, but Republicans, who control the Senate, think it encourages people not to look for work, ignoring the fact that the pandemic has decimated industries, and millions of people simply aren't able to find jobs. The unemployment rate is still the worst since the Great Depression: 1 in every 7.5 Americans in the labor force can't find work.1

And economists are warning that ending the $600 benefit on July 31 would hurt not just American families but our nation's economy, too. Without that money, the average recipient's income would immediately fall, leading to less household spending.2

Congress must do the right thing and extend the $600 weekly additional unemployment assistance benefit.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, millions of Americans have lost their jobs.

The federal $600 weekly unemployment supplement benefit included in the CARES Act is set to expire on July 31.

Unemployed Americans and their families can't survive without this benefit. Congress must expand the $600 weekly assistance until December 31, 2020, and longer if necessary.

Many people who are laid off due to the pandemic won't find work for a very long time—and maybe never, because some jobs won't be coming back. Some people will need time and resources to learn and develop new skills for new jobs.

An extension of the $600 weekly supplement benefit through January 2021 was included in the HEROES Act, approved by the Democrat-controlled House along partisan lines in May, but the bill has stalled in the Republican-led Senate.

If you are the recipient of this $600 unemployment benefit or want to make sure that folks are able to get by and take care of their families, call on Congress right now to extend the benefit past July 31. We need to look out for each other during these unprecedented times.

Click here right now to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–RJ Wolfe

OFFICIAL BALLOT: Should MoveOn endorse Vice President Joe Biden in the presidential race?

Thursday, June 25, 2020

Tomorrow: MoveOn's membership-wide endorsement vote

We are launching a formal presidential endorsement vote!

This is a big decision: Should MoveOn endorse a candidate in the Democratic presidential primary? Cast your vote now.

Dear MoveOn member,

The 2020 presidential election is 130 days away (not that we're counting!) and we want to give the millions of MoveOn members across the country a chance to weigh in on the Democratic presidential nomination prior to the August convention. We will soon launch a formal endorsement vote to determine whether you believe MoveOn should endorse Joe Biden and campaign to help get him elected as the next President of the United States.

This decision is in your hands. MoveOn endorses candidates for office only by a vote of MoveOn members. It's who we are.

A key reason MoveOn exists is to elevate people's voices in our democracy, which has been rigged by the undue influence of big money and powerful interests—and that's exactly what this vote is about. If there is substantial alignment among members, we will endorse and do everything in our power to help Joe Biden become the next president of the United States.

Visit our endorsement website to learn more about the 2020 presidential endorsement process.

The rules for MoveOn's 2020 endorsement vote follow.

Rules:

1. Voting is open to anyone who has become a MoveOn member by June 25. While any person may cast a ballot, only the votes of MoveOn members prior to the start of the vote will be counted. The MoveOn membership includes everyone who has opted in to receive emails or text messages from MoveOn.

2. Voting will open Friday, June 26, and close the following Tuesday, June 30, at noon ET. Check your email and text messages tomorrow for your official ballot.

3. This is a big decision, and one thing we've heard loud and clear from MoveOn members is that it's important for us to stand together. To win the 2020 presidential endorsement of MoveOn members, a candidate must earn a supermajority—66.67%—of votes cast. If a candidate doesn't hit that threshold, we won't make an official endorsement.

4. We'll announce the results the following week after a secure confirmation of the ballots cast.

No matter the outcome of the vote, we've heard loud and clear that MoveOn members of all stripes want us to work to help the Democratic nominee in defeating Donald Trump and getting him out of the White House—and we'll do that.

How to Vote:

If you already regularly receive emails or text messages from MoveOn, you are a member and eligible to vote. You will receive a ballot via email and/or SMS when voting starts.

When MoveOn members voted to endorse Barack Obama in 2008, we went all in to help him make it to the White House. A MoveOn endorsement means votes, volunteers, fundraising, and enthusiasm heading into the fall, just months away.

Please be on the lookout for your ballot on Friday, June 26!

Thanks for all you do.

Sign the petition: Call on your elected officials to reject campaign contributions from the Fraternal Order of Police

It's time to get police association money out of our politics.

Dear MoveOn member,

Since 1960, the Fraternal Order of Police and other police associations have by and large fought to block police accountability and policy changes that would protect communities from police violence.

Each election cycle, police organizations associated with the Fraternal Order of Police donate generously to officials and candidates across the country—from local city councils to the president. These contributions buy police associations political clout to avoid accountability for police violence and help keep police department budgets overfunded, even now, at a time when those funds would serve us best if invested in community safety and support programs.

It's time to get the Fraternal Order of Police's harmful influence out of our politics. Which is why MoveOn released a letter this week, calling on all elected officials and candidates to stand on the right side of history and refuse to take financial contributions and support from police associations like the Fraternal Order of Police.1

MoveOn's letter echoes the demand from our allies at Color of Change—and you can add your own name to this fight. Click here to sign Color of Change's petition demanding that elected officials stop taking contributions from police organizations associated with the Fraternal Order of Police, and then read on.

Here are some of the reasons why we're asking officials to stop taking their campaign cash: The Fraternal Order of Police and other police associations have long rejected demands for transparency and accountability. They oppose efforts to document racial profiling and track complaints of use of excessive force by police oficers. They shut down civilian review boards. They make it difficult to investigate misconduct claims. They lobby to keep officers' disciplinary histories sealed. And they make it almost impossible to get rid of police officers who break the rules.

Recently, trade unions have come out to denounce police brutality, going so far as to say that unions should never be used to shield police from accountability for their misconduct. In fact, a large group of unions in Seattle recently expelled the local police union from their council because of the police union's unwillingness to address racism within their ranks.2

We entrust police officers with immense power. At stake are our safety, freedom, and lives—and the rule of law. When police associations protect officers who refuse to uphold the principles that we depend on them to honor, we all lose.

Will you sign Color of Change's petition calling on politicians to reject donations from police organizations associated with the Fraternal Order of Police and to encourage their fellow elected officials and candidates for office to do the same?

2020 has been a very difficult year for our nation, with many crises demanding our attention and participation. But this challenging time is also a moment of great opportunity.

People nationwide have taken to the streets and the internet to amplify long-standing calls for justice for Black people subjected to police violence. Constituents and organizations across the country are demanding that their elected officials and candidates running for office take clear positions and act to keep our communities safe by holding police and police associations accountable.

By calling on our elected officials to reject campaign contributions from police associations, we can increase the opportunities to make our communities safer and our country more equitable and just.

Thanks for all you do.

Don't rely on the polls. Trump is winning.

MoveOn is developing a strategy based on an innovative approach called "Vote Tripling," and, so far, testing data shows it could be five times more effective than traditional strategies like phone calls and canvassing.

Dear MoveOn member,

It's less than 20 weeks to Election Day, and the worst possible thing is happening right now: Democrats are starting to think they have the election in the bag.

Yes, Donald Trump's national poll numbers are slumping across the board right now. Trump's devastating bungling of the coronavirus pandemic, the depth of the economic crisis he exacerbated, and his violently racist response to the Black Lives Matter protests have been epic disasters.

But seriously. Didn't we learn ANYTHING from 2016?

As bad as Trump's numbers are now, his base still loves him, and he still has a massive advantage in the Electoral College.1 He has way more money than the Biden campaign.2 His campaign is light-years ahead of Democrats in harvesting voter data and targeting voters on social media—and Trump's campaign is tapping into the destructive expertise of disinformation tactics online.3,4 And as the primaries have unfolded during the pandemic, we've seen how far Republicans will go to suppress the vote—especially of voters of color—in key states like Wisconsin, Florida, and Georgia.5

On top of all of that, the recent swing in the polls toward Joe Biden can swing right back to Trump. It's only June.

MoveOn is developing a strategy based on an innovative approach called "Vote Tripling," and, so far, testing data shows it could be five times more effective than traditional strategies like phone calls and canvassing. On average, MoveOn's monthly donors chip in about $12 a month. Will you chip in $12 a month to help us get this game-changing program off the ground and keep it running in 10 of the most important swing states to defeat Trump in November?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Our innovative new "Vote Tripling" strategy is based on data showing that the best way to increase voter turnout is through social influence and accountability. You see, if you make sure that your close friends and family are going to vote, and they know that YOU are going to vote, then they're far less likely to blow it off.6

Whether you voted or not is public information—not which candidates you voted for but whether you cast a ballot or not. But most people don't realize that. They figure that their vote won't matter, and no one will know whether they voted anyway, so who cares?

That's the attitude that put Trump in the White House in the first place.

We've tested various forms of voter accountability and social influence in the past, and this year we are recruiting hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members in battleground states to sign "Vote Tripling Pledges," which are commitments to reach out to three friends or family members, help them create plans to vote, and then make sure they actually cast ballots this fall.

Tests have found that this kind of social influence increased voter turnout by more than 10% in voters under 30. That's five times more effective than phone banking and canvassing.7 Can you chip in $12 a month to help MoveOn run this program in every one of the top 10 battleground states? We need a consistent flow of resources to run the program from now through Election Day. (The average gift from a MoveOn monthly donor is about $12 a month, but whatever you can afford will go a long way.)

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Here's a reality check for people who think Trump will be easy to beat in November. Only two incumbent presidents have been defeated for re-election since World War II: Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush.

Trump's approval ratings are 5 points better than Bush's and 7 points better than Carter's were at the same point in their re-election campaigns.8

And that's after what has to be the worst run of press coverage any president has had in recent memory. Imagine what will happen when the press coverage starts to turn. And you know it will. The media loves to tear down front-runners, and Biden will make mistakes that the press will pounce on.

The people who are still with Trump now will never leave him, and that means he'll always have a chance of being re-elected. Yes, every poll shows Biden ahead right now. But every poll showed Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump four years ago. And then Trump's disgusting "Access Hollywood" revelation happened. And Trump still won.

We cannot take this election for granted. If we do, we will lose. MoveOn's got a great plan to beat Trump, but we need your help to fund it. On average, MoveOn's monthly donors chip in about $12 a month. Given the state of our economy, not everyone is in a position to contribute, but if you can, will you chip in $12 a month to help launch and sustain our data-driven, innovative Vote Tripling program from now through Election Day?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.
