How Rep. McCarthy could save the public option

Progressives in Congress are pledging not to vote for a bill that doesn't include a strong public health insurance option—but Rep. McCarthy hasn't joined them yet. Can you call her today and ask her to sign the Progressive Caucus letter?

Representative Carolyn McCarthy
Phone: 202-225-5516

Report your call

Dear MoveOn member,

The heart of President Obama's health-care reform plan—the public health insurance option—is under attack. And your representative, Carolyn McCarthy, has a chance to join the fight to save it.

Earlier this week, a small group of conservative Blue Dog Democrats forced a compromise that would badly weaken the public option.

Then yesterday, 57 representatives released a letter saying the deal is unacceptable—that "they simply cannot vote" for a bill that doesn't include a strong public health insurance option.1

But as of last night, Rep. McCarthy hadn't signed the letter.

Can you call her right away and urge her to sign the Progressive Caucus letter demanding a strong public health insurance option?

Here's where to call:

Representative Carolyn McCarthy
Phone: 202-225-5516

http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FHNY_04&cp_id=1050&id=16701-10220574-ZIehWtx&t=3

It's critically important for progressives to show that we're united in support of a real public option—and against any half-measures that would water it down to protect private health insurance companies from competition.

That's why it's so exciting that the Congressional Progressive Caucus has organized this letter—and why we need to get their back with a wave of grassroots support urging more representatives to join them.

Can you call Rep. McCarthy right away?

Spread the word about the energy bill?

The New York Times just issued a call to stop the attack on the Clean Air Act. Can you bring that message to The Daily News by writing a letter to the editor about the need to fix the energy bill?

Dear MoveOn member,

Last week we had a big breakthrough in the fight for clean energy, and we need your help to keep the momentum going in your community.

The New York Times—arguably the most influential paper in America—wrote a powerful editorial calling on Congress to reject rollbacks of the Clean Air Act in the energy bill.1

Just a few weeks ago, the Times didn't even mention this hidden rollback in its own coverage. Now, its editors are highlighting it as one of the most important issues that must be addressed.

Now that we have their attention, we need to make sure the message gets out in your local papers, too. Can you send a quick letter to the editor of The Daily News—or another local paper—about the urgent need for Congress to make this critical fix to the energy bill? Click here:

http://pol.moveon.org/lte?campaign_id=115&id=16692-10220574-Hp3nGRx&t=3

You can send the letter right from our website, and we provide everything you need to write it. It just takes a few minutes.

A letter to the editor is a really powerful way of influencing the public debate and getting through to your senators. Members of Congress and their staffs routinely compile letters to the editor to understand what their constituents are thinking. And the media read it as feedback on their coverage.

Here are a few key points for your letter:

  • The time is now to pass strong clean energy jobs legislation that will jumpstart our economy and lay the groundwork for America to be competitive in the 21st century. The combined economic and climate crises require urgent action, and Americans continue to support Obama's campaign vision for a clean energy future.
  • As a recent New York Times editorial argued, "The older, dirtiest [coal] plants...simply cannot be let off the hook." The Senate must close damaging loopholes in the energy bill.2
  • To get the economy going again, New York needs more windmills, not more smokestacks. Solar and wind create twice as many jobs as coal. More coal means fewer clean energy jobs.3
  • We must fix the energy bill and save the Clean Air Act. The energy bill that passed the House of Representatives was weakened by industry lobbyists and repeals the part of the Clean Air Act that limits global warming pollution from power plants. This rollback will open the door for as many as 100 new coal plants and give a new lease on life for the oldest and dirtiest coal plants.4

Can you send a letter to the editor of The Daily News, or another local newspaper? Just click here to get started:

http://pol.moveon.org/lte?campaign_id=115&id=16692-10220574-Hp3nGRx&t=4

Obama's birth certificate

CNN host Lou Dobbs is helping spread conspiracy theories about Obama's birth certificate. Tell CNN that's not responsible journalism.

Sign the Petition

Dear MoveOn member,

Why is CNN promoting right-wing paranoid conspiracy theories about President Obama's birth certificate?

The fringe ideas of the so-called "birthers" have been thoroughly debunked.1 But CNN host Lou Dobbs perpetuates these myths by constantly talking about them on his shows and asserting that Obama still needs to "produce a birth certificate."

This is not responsible journalism. Our friends at Media Matters have launched a campaign calling on CNN to address its Lou Dobbs problem—but a lot of us are going to have to speak out in order to get CNN's attention. Clicking here will add your name to their petition:

http://civ.moveon.org/stopdobbs/o.pl?id=16689-10220574-lkox9Cx&t=3

The petition reads:

Dobbs' relentless promotion of outlandish conspiracy theories about President Barack Obama's birth certificate seriously damages CNN's credibility. It is time for "The Most Trusted Name in News" to prove it deserves viewers' trust. We the undersigned demand CNN address its Lou Dobbs problem in a credible manner.

Numerous reporters, including CNN's own hosts, have debunked the idea that Obama wasn't really born in the U.S.2

Nevertheless, Dobbs has repeatedly claimed on both his television and radio shows that the birth certificate the president posted online more than a year ago has "some issues"3—and lashed out at "lily-livered lefties" who criticized him.

CNN's reputation is on the line. Their president, Jon Klein, has admitted that anyone who "is not convinced doesn't really have a legitimate beef"—but he has refused to correct the situation.4

CNN needs to hear that allowing Dobbs' to promote "birther" conspiracy theories is simply irresponsible. Please sign the petition by clicking here:

http://civ.moveon.org/stopdobbs/o.pl?id=16689-10220574-lkox9Cx&t=4

Thank you for your help in holding CNN accountable.

Kill health care?

Can you call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand today? Tell them: don't leave for August vacation until you vote on health care. Americans can't wait for real reform.

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: 202-224-4451

Report your call

Dear MoveOn member,

Let's be clear: Republicans aren't trying to make health care reform better—they're trying to delay it until it dies.

Some, like right-wing pundit Bill Kristol, even admit it: "This is no time to pull punches. Go for the kill."

And right now, too many Democrats are playing right into their hands. The Senate is saying they're not even going to vote on health care before their August vacation—and if conservative Democrats have their way, the House won't either.1,2

Every day Congress stalls, our chance for real health care reform grows dimmer. Can you call Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today and tell them not to leave for August vacation before voting on health care reform?

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand

http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FSNY_1.FSNY_2&cp_id=1045&id=16679-10220574-NvRINSx&t=3

Stalling reform is the Republicans' key strategy to stopping it entirely.3 But with real people's lives at stake, the status quo is simply untenable.

Every day, 14,000 Americans lose their insurance,4 and nearly 2,500 file for bankruptcy because of medical costs.5 And costs continue to spiral out of control—average family premiums will hit $22,000 a year over the next decade.6

Enough is enough. We've had years to debate health care reform—what we need now is action.

Can you call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand right away? Tell them delay isn't an option—the cost of inaction is just too high. Then click the link below to let us know how your calls went:

Unbelievable

"Don't go on vacation without acting on health care. Americans don't get a break from the health care crisis, and Congress shouldn't get a break until they vote on the bill."

Sign the petition
Dear MoveOn member,

The Senate just announced they'll take a month-long vacation before voting on health care reform.1

What?!?

Republicans think that by demanding delays, they can kill reform—and too many conservative Democrats are playing into their hands.

But Americans can't afford to wait: while the Senate is on vacation, over 400,000 people will lose their health coverage.2

Every member of Congress needs to hear—quickly—that voters want them focused on health care now, not running off on vacation. Click below to sign our "Don't go!" petition, which we'll deliver to congressional offices today:

http://pol.moveon.org/dontgo/?id=16661-10220574-zdNi4fx&t=3

The petition says: "Don't go on vacation without acting on health care. Americans don't get a break from the health care crisis, and Congress shouldn't get a break until they vote on the bill."

Every day, 14,000 Americans lose their health coverage.3 And every week, 17,000 file for bankruptcy because they can't pay their medical bills.4 The notion that we can afford a delay when real people's lives are at stake is mind-boggling.

The key to winning this fight is to generate the biggest outcry we can, as quickly as possible. After you sign the petition, send it around to your friends, link to it on Facebook and Twitter, and also make a phone call to your member of Congress.

Failing to deliver reform isn't an option here—not when our broken system just gets worse every day. Can you sign the "Don't go!" petition to Congress right away?

Clean Air Act threatened?

Coal lobbyists are pressuring the Senate to roll back the Clean Air Act as part of the energy bill. Can you ask Sen. Schumer if he is for or against rolling back the Clean Air Act?

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Dear MoveOn member,

Lobbyists for Big Coal won a victory in the House energy bill—the repeal of a key Clean Air Act provision. This would lock in a new generation of dirty coal power and block many of the solar and wind power jobs we need.1 Will the Senate do the same or will they protect this vital law?

Senator Charles Schumer has not yet taken a public position on the Clean Air Act rollback. Today, we're going to ask him to take a stand.

Can you call Sen. Schumer to ask if he is for or against weakening the Clean Air Act?

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Then, please report your call by clicking here:

http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FSNY_1&cp_id=1030&id=16648-10220574-q__Is7x&t=3

You'd think the answer to this question would be obvious, but it's not. A majority of House members—including more than 200 Democrats—voted for a bill that does some good things, like improving energy efficiency, but also repeals a whole section of the Clean Air Act that requires limits on global warming pollution from coal plants. And unless senators step up now to prevent it, that could easily happen again in the Senate.

Will the Senate save the Clean Air Act, allowing Obama to crack down on dirty coal plants? Or will Big Coal get a free pass—while also crowding out many solar and wind start-ups and the new jobs they'd create?2 Sen. Schumer will help decide.

MoveOn members have been asking senators this question again and again. Together, we ran a newspaper ad in a Capitol Hill newspaper. We sent 66,000 faxes. We sent messages to our senators on Facebook and Twitter.

Now it's time to make some calls.

Please ask Sen. Schumer to save the Clean Air Act:

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Then, please report back by clicking here:

Great momentum

Dear MoveOn member,

The Republicans' official health care strategy just leaked—and it's ugly. Their plan is to "engage in every activity" to slow down health care reform.1 The goal? Kill President Obama's health care plan and, with it, his momentum and political capital.2,3

We need to fight back—and fast.

MoveOn members have chipped in $150,000 in the last 24 hours to help launch a hard-hitting rapid response campaign. If we can reach $200,000 today, we'll have the resources we need to get going right away.

Can you chip in $25 to help us hit our goal?

Republicans are trying to "break" Obama by killing health care reform. The next two weeks are critical. Can you chip in $25 to help fight back and make sure we pass real reform?

Dear MoveOn member,

"If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him."1

That's what a Republican senator said last week about health care. Republicans will stop at nothing to kill health care reform and undermine Obama's agenda for change.

We can't let that happen.

So we're ramping up our campaign: from now until health care reform passes, we've got organizers planning events from coast to coast, ad-makers working around the clock, and MoveOn members hitting the phones daily.

The next two weeks will make or break health care reform. Can you chip in $25 to help us beat back the right-wing effort to derail health care reform?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/letter.html?id=16639-10220574-ZPBwHPx&t=7

Republicans won't hold back on using scare tactics and outright lies to stall reform—so we just have to make sure that the voices of regular Americans are so constant and so strong that it overwhelms the opposition's rhetoric.

Over the coming weeks, we'll make sure calls are pouring into Congress daily, hold rallies at Senate offices, run ads hitting back at health care opponents, organize a massive day of action for health care reform, and more.

There's five million of us, and millions more across the country who want—and need—reform now. Without a public outpouring of support, it's too likely Congress could squander the best opportunity we've had in decades for real reform.

If we all step up, though, we can win this. Can you give $25 to support our campaign today?

Are you on Facebook? Take action

Dear MoveOn member,

Are you on Facebook? Well, Senator Charles Schumer is. And it's a great way to ask him to save the Clean Air Act.

The House energy bill would repeal a key section of the Clean Air Act.1 A few senators are speaking out for the Clean Air Act, but we'll need many more.

Can you use Facebook to ask Sen. Schumer to save the Clean Air Act?

Facebook wall:
http://www.facebook.com/chuckschumer?v=wall

Become a fan, then write on his wall.

Then, please let us know you did by clicking here:

Since it's a new form of communication, senators are paying extra attention to what voters say on their Facebook walls and Twitter feeds. If you're not on, it's easy to join.

Without this important Clean Air Act provision, President Obama's Environmental Protection Agency will have to halt recent efforts toward cracking down on the global warming pollution from dirty coal plants.2

And if Congress eliminates this part of the Clean Air Act, they'll let old, dirty coal plants off the hook for their pollution—and could pave the way for the construction of over 100 new coal plants in communities across the country.3

In short, as long as Big Coal dominates our politics and our energy grid, wind and solar power won't be able to compete on a level playing field. That's terrible news for the climate and the economy: Wind and solar create more than twice as many jobs as coal and oil.4

That's why we need the Senate to save the Clean Air Act and open the door to the clean energy economy of the future.

Please ask Sen. Schumer to save the Clean Air Act:

Clean Air Act needs your help in New York

Sen. Gillibrand is one of the first senators to speak out publicly against a hidden provision in the energy bill that would roll back the Clean Air Act. Can you write a letter to the editor to thank her?

Dear Move On member,

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is taking a brave stand for clean energy, and we need to support her.

You see, hidden in the energy bill that passed the House last month is a provision that would actually repeal a key section of the Clean Air Act. As a result, we could get a whole new generation of dirty coal power instead of windmills and solar power.

But Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is fighting to save the Clean Air Act. She was one of the very first senators to speak out, and now she's under a lot of pressure from powerful coal and oil companies to back down.

We've got to show her that New Yorkers are with her. Can you write a letter to the editor to urge Sen. Gillibrand to keep fighting? Our tool makes writing a letter really simple. You can send the letter right from our web site—it only takes a few minutes:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=51631&id=16598-10220574-Kl1FD0x&t=3

MoveOn members have contacted Sen. Gillibrand about this directly, but to really show our support, it's clear that we need to do more.

If you've never written a letter to the editor before, now is the time to send your first. The letters page is one of the most widely read—and most important—in local newspapers. Members of Congress and their staff read it to understand how their constituents are feeling. And reporters read it as feedback on their coverage.

Here are a few key points for your letter on why Sen. Gillibrand deserves our applause:

  • The Clean Air Act is under attack: The House-passed energy bill includes a hidden provision slipped in by Big Oil and Coal lobbyists. It would repeal a key section of the Clean Air Act that limits global warming pollution from coal-fired power plants, refineries, and other factories. This would help usher in a whole new generation of dirty coal power and crowd out the clean energy jobs we need.1
  • Sen. Gillibrand is fighting the rollback of the Clean Air Act: She told the Albany Times Union that "The EPA has to have authority to regulate coal plants under the Clean Air Act" and promised "to use every bit of persuasive power" to ensure the bill "reflects the needs of New York" by cutting power plant pollution.2
  • Clean energy means more jobs: According to research by the Political Economy Research Institute, wind and solar power create more than double the jobs that we get from coal and oil.3

We need to make sure that when senators do the right thing, they get the praise back home that they deserve. Click here to write your letter to the editor:

Re: Breaking: Why Sarah Palin is resigning

Hi there,

I'm excited to report that MoveOn members have already donated $125,000 to counter Sarah Palin's lies about President Obama's vision for a clean energy economy. And that's getting a lot of press attention, as evidence of how "motivated and energized" we are.1

But we've still got a lot of catching up to do. Since she announced her resignation, Palin has raised $200,000—money she can use to travel around the country supporting right-wing candidates and opposing President Obama's clean energy agenda.2

So we're setting a new goal of raising $200,000 to match Palin in the fight for a clean energy economy. Can you chip in $25 to help reach our new goal?

Check out our original email below to learn more about Palin's lies.

Thanks!

Sarah Palin's new job? Attacking Obama's clean energy jobs plan and keeping us hooked on Big Oil and Coal. Palin's lies are a real threat because she gets lots of media attention. Can you chip in $25 to run an ad to counter Palin's lies?

Dear MoveOn member,

Well, now we know why Sarah Palin is quitting as governor of Alaska.

In a Washington Post column, she just announced her new focus: killing our chance to build a clean energy economy, starting with the energy bill currently in Congress.1

Her op-ed is a marvel of misinformation and outright lies. Just like conservatives in Congress, Palin is trotting out the "energy taxes" scare tactic, and arguing instead for more drilling and more dirty coal. This bill already has too many giveaways to Big Coal and Big Oil, but it's still not enough for Palin.2

As ridiculous as Sarah Palin's lies are, they're getting attention, and they're a real threat to clean energy. If we can raise $125,000 today, we'll run a rapid response ad to counter these lies and stop Palin's attack. Can you donate $25?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/palin_energy.html?id=16586-10220574-4wgBFhx&t=6

This is the same Sarah Palin who doesn't believe climate change is caused by humans.3 The same Sarah Palin who is obsessed with drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And the same Sarah Palin who's looking for controversial issues to launch a 2012 presidential bid.

Now she's positioning herself as the face of the conservative attack against clean energy, against the Clean Air Act—even against the creation of millions of new jobs in solar and wind.4

But wind and solar create more than twice as many jobs as coal and oil.5 Clean energy is the only way to make America's economy competitive in the 21st century.

The truth is we need a stronger energy bill in the Senate to combat our economic and climate crisis, but Sarah Palin's lies could sink our hopes for a clean energy economy. Can you chip in $25 to fight back against Palin's false claims?

Congress needs to hear from you on health care

If you're a medical professional or involved in a small business, your voice is needed in the health care debate. Click below today:

I'm involved in a small business

I'm a medical professional

Dear MoveOn member,

Are you a medical professional, or involved in a small business? If so, your voice is needed in the health care debate right away.

Right now, the heart of Obama's plan is under attack from big insurance companies and conservative lobbyists.1,2

But the few insiders getting rich off of the current system don't speak for all Americans, so we're putting together two special open letters—one from medical professionals and one from small businesspeople—on the importance of passing real reform, including a strong public health insurance option.

If you're a medical professional or involved in a small business, we need your voice today. Click on one of the links below to read the letter and sign your name:

I own, manage, or work at a small business

I'm a doctor, nurse, medical student, or other medical professional

The next three weeks could be make or break for health care reform—key committees are finalizing legislation right now. During these crucial weeks, it's important for Congress to hear from those with firsthand knowledge of just how badly our health care system needs fixing.

They need to hear from doctors and other medical professionals about the difficult situation they're in, and how that impacts patients. And they need to hear from small businesspeople who see the impact of health care costs on their businesses, employees, and communities every day.

We'll be sharing these letters with members of Congress, including yours, and also working to get them printed in national and local newspapers—to make sure these important perspectives are heard as the effort to reform health care moves into the home stretch.

Thanks for all you do.

Elmhurst: The moment we've been waiting for

In the next few weeks, the Senate will vote on both health care and clean energy. On Sunday, Jul. 12, 2009, at 3:00 PM in Elmhurst, we're setting our local strategy to win. Can you be there?

RSVP for your local event

Dear MoveOn member,

This is the moment we've been waiting for.

In the next four weeks, the Senate is planning to vote on both health care and clean energy—our biggest priorities.

And this week, The Washington Post reported on what we're up against: Industry lobbyists are planning to spend $1.4 million a day to stop Obama's agenda on these key issues.1

That's why MoveOn members are getting together in Elmhurst on Sunday to chart our strategy for the history-making month ahead, focusing on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's role in shaping the health care and clean energy bills.

Can you make it? Here are the details:

Host: Jennie S.—fellow MoveOn member
Where: Georgia Diner- Elmhurst/ Queens Blvd (in Elmhurst)
When: Sunday, Jul. 12, 2009, at 3:00 PM

Here's the link to RSVP:
http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/event.html?event_id=94357&id=16539-10220574-EG5Spvx&t=3

If we succeed, we'll change our country forever. But it will take every last one of us to win.

The only way to change the status quo is to make sure the most influential members of Congress are hearing from us—loudly—at all the right moments.

Can you join in this important strategic briefing on Sunday in Elmhurst? We'll make plans for the next local event so we can hit the ground running.
