Sign the petition: Don't let Trump's pardons obstruct justice

What will we do if Trump begins to pardon everybody? Every crony, every enabler, every family member entangled in the corruption, cover-ups, and web of investigations into Trump's team's foreign and financial ties?

Dear New York MoveOn member,

I'm Shaun King, a writer, activist, and MoveOn member in New York, and I just started a petition to the New York state legislature, as well as to attorneys general and state legislatures and around the country, because I'm afraid Trump could start issuing pardons to obstruct justice—which is why we need to take action now.

Make sure we can hold Trump's cronies accountable for state crimes even if Trump seeks to obstruct justice by issuing corrupt pardons

What will we do if Donald Trump begins to pardon everybody—every crony, every enabler, every family member—entangled in the corruption, cover-ups, and web of investigations into his team's foreign and financial ties?

We may take to the streets. We may call it obstruction of justice. But we can also take action now to make sure that the likes of Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, and Jared Kushner are held accountable.

Under our Constitution, a sitting president has the power to pardon anyone for breaking federal law. But Trump can't pardon state crimes—meaning state prosecutors usually can hold someone accountable even if they've received a presidential pardon.

As New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman recently explained, a quirk in New York law could enable Trump to get his friends off scot-free with a cunningly timed pardon. (The same may be true in a number of other states as well.) Which is why members of the New York legislature and legislators across the country need to commit to not allowing corrupt federal pardons to absolve Trump's cronies from facing state criminal charges.

Please contact your state legislators today and tell them that we can't let Trump's cronies evade justice.  If they broke the law, they must face the consequences. Let's make sure that New York is committed to holding Trump's cronies accountable for state crimes even if Trump issues corrupt and outrageous pardons.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

—Shaun King

The State of MoveOn

This is the crux of it: We've become a pillar of the organized Resistance to Trump and Trumpism, and we need to run the biggest, smartest get-out-the-vote operation we've ever run—but whether we can depends on you.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm headed to MoveOn's once-a-year in-person staff retreat, where I'll share a report on the state of MoveOn. I wanted to share it with you, too.

Here's the summary, Eddie: MoveOn is in the fight of our lives to stop Donald Trump and the GOP's attacks—and to turn our democracy toward the positive vision of equality, justice, and love that we hold in our hearts. Between now and November, as a staff team and member community, we need to be significantly bigger—and organize even smarter—than ever before. The course of history depends on all of us rising to the challenge.

Here's my request: If every MoveOn member chipped in $3 right now, we'd have enough resources to stop fundraising for the rest of the year—and we'd be able to focus exclusively on building and executing our essential campaigns and get-out-the-vote drive.

Please chip in $3 now. And read on for more about your organization.

When I stepped into this job in 2013, we had 22 staff members. We've been growing since then. To meet the huge challenges we face this year, we'll surge to 90 people strong by November. The total of MoveOn Civic Action and MoveOn Political Action's budgets was $7.5 million when I began; this year, it's nearing $30 million. We had 5 internal teams in 2013; now, we have 16, including teams that focus on entirely new areas like video, mobile, down-ballot endorsements, and more.

Our work together has never been more needed. I really believe that MoveOn was built for this moment—as MoveOn staff and millions of MoveOn members take action together for the good of the country, to stop the corrupt, chaotic, and hateful regime that's doing so much damage every day.

Here's what I see when I scan the organization today—and why I need to know if I can count on your support as we work our hearts out to meet the extremely high-stake demands of our time.

MoveOn's campaigns and election plan

There are no shortcuts to ending our current crisis; we have to RESIST, and we have to WIN.

We're campaigning right now to block Trump's toxic agenda: rallying, melting the phones in Congress with thousands of calls, marching, and bringing together tens of thousands of people at a time on national "Ready to Resist" planning calls. By organizing with close partners, we've had huge successes—for example, we have repeatedly stopped Trump and the GOP from repealing the Affordable Care Act. We are continuing to work across partisan lines to defend the rule of law and protect the independent investigation into Trump's team. We are standing fiercely with Dreamers and other communities on the frontlines of hateful attacks. And more.

And at the same time, we're preparing our general election mobilization program—and we're doing so much earlier than we ever have before. Fighting to end GOP control of the House is our top election priority—and that includes being all-in to support over 100 congressional candidates. We're also, for the first time in our history, going big into down-ballot elections—because so much vital policy-making happens at the state and local levels, and because we have to build the pipeline of future national leaders who can help take our country forward with a bold, progressive vision for the future.

This means that we are walking and chewing gum (and juggling, and riding a bicycle 😉) at the same time. We are resisting the current attacks on our communities, values, and democracy. We are already working to help end GOP control of Congress this November. And we'll be supporting local candidates who can lead us into the future.

Eddie: Can you contribute $3 to support MoveOn's essential campaigns and election program this year?

Our members and staff team

MoveOn members are everywhere. There are MoveOn members in every one of the 3,000 counties in the U.S., in major cities and rural communities. We are teachers, social workers, retirees, students, and more. We are young and old, gay and straight, of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, parents and grandparents, and more. Some of us just read the emails and share a video now and then; others spend our days, nights, and weekends organizing. One thousand of us are on the MoveOn Text Team, sending messages to fellow members. Over 1,000 of us were trained in summer 2017 through the "Resistance Summer" program and are now equipped with essential community organizing skills. We all do what we can.

MoveOn members are united by our passion for building a country where everyone can thrive, where there's a place of dignity and honor for everyone—AND by our passion for fighting to stop the horror show that is the Trump administration.

Our hard-working staff team has always been small, relative to MoveOn's overall reach and impact. Given the increased demands of the Trump era, and the crucial upcoming midterm elections, we've expanded substantially in the past year. We hail from all corners of the country—from Maine, from Kentucky, from California. We have no fancy national headquarters; our staff nearly all work remotely, out of modest home offices or co-working spaces.

MoveOn staff work for YOU. Please chip in $3 to power our essential work together.

Getting our message out

We are in the public eye. When Ted Cruz wants to decry progressives on the floor of the Senate, he attacks MoveOn. If you've turned on PBS, CNN, or MSNBC lately, you've probably spotted MoveOn's senior adviser Karine Jean-Pierre making a powerful case for MoveOn members' shared values—she's on the air nearly every day of the week representing millions of us just beautifully. Nearly 500,000 people receive SMS messages from MoveOn every week, and millions receive MoveOn emails. Our Video Lab team produces hundreds of videos each year featuring MoveOn members' stories and voices, and fact-based arguments to rebut right-wing talking points—videos which have been seen nearly 400 million times since the team was launched in June 2016.

Our staff team and MoveOn members are clear and proud about our independent, progressive values. We can't be bullied into silence—not online, not on TV, not anywhere. But now's the moment when this incredible reach is so vital: We need to use our huge megaphone to cut through the chatter and ensure that every voter understands the stakes of this November's elections.

Will you chip in $3?

Our innovations

In 2017, MoveOn members made over 1 million phone calls to Congress to defend health care access—thanks in part to a clever phone bank tool that MoveOn's data scientists built. We built and have experimented with a video persuasion program, featuring MoveOn members' personal stories about why they're voting that was wildly successful in special elections in Virginia, Alabama, Pennsylvania, and Illinois—a program which we'll use again in the general election. Our new peer-to-peer texting program Spoke is an open-source toolset that we took over from some volunteer coders from the Bernie Sanders campaign, and it's now generating over a million volunteer texts each month.

We can no longer be just an email organization, though many people still say to me when they learn that I work for MoveOn, "Oh yeah, I get emails from you." Given the way that people now live their lives, we need to be a campaigning and organizing community that uses SMS, video, social media, and person-to-person organizing, and other tools and techniques to make change in the country. Our staff team is working around the clock to surface innovations in tech and organizing and apply them to the vital work of mobilizing volunteers and voters in this election.

Where our resources come from

MoveOn is really unique among nonprofit organizations in how we're funded: Over 90% of our budget comes from individual contributions from members like you, chipping in when you can. We received nearly 1 million unique contributions in 2017. Nearly 80,000 people have made the commitment to be monthly donors—giving a fixed amount each month—which helps us plan our budget for the coming year with much more confidence about what we'll have to work with. We take in no government grants or corporate contributions.

This is the crux of it, Eddie: We've become a pillar of the organized Resistance to Trump and Trumpism, and we need to run the biggest, smartest get-out-the-vote operation we've ever run—but whether we can depends on you.

Can you help us rise to the opportunities and challenges of this year?

Chip in $3 now.

Thanks for reading—and for all you do.

–Anna

We're coming for the NRA. Here's how.

Next week we're going right to the belly of the beast: We're heading to the NRA's annual meeting in Dallas, where Mike Pence will deliver a speech—to organize large-scale actions and protests.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

The Parkland massacre changed everything for me.

Seeing the students who survived the shooting attending their high school classmates' funerals, mourn, and speak out to demand that adults end the killing flipped a switch in my life.

I've spent every minute possible since then organizing a new campaign called #NoRA, which brings together some of the country's best creative minds, leading gun control experts, Parkland students, and activists, all ready to take on the National Rifle Association (NRA) directly—since it's the NRA that is standing in the way of every single gun control measure.

And next week we're going right to the belly of the beast: We're heading to the NRA's annual meeting in Dallas, where Mike Pence will deliver a speech—to organize large-scale actions and protests.

#NoRA is partnering with MoveOn and allies to make sure we can really make ourselves heard there, and that's why I'm writing you with an urgent request: Will you chip in $3 now to MoveOn to help us confront the NRA directly?

Yes, I'll chip in right now.

I refuse to accept that massacres at schools are normal. I refuse to accept that an average of 96 people—including seven children—killed by guns every day in America is normal.1

This level of killing doesn't happen in any other developed country. Only in America.

And it happens in America because the NRA is standing in the way of closing the background check loophole that could have saved 13 lives at Columbine High School.

And because the NRA is standing in the way of mandatory safe storage and trigger locks that could have saved 26 lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

And because the NRA is standing in the way of an assault weapons ban that could have saved 17 lives at Parkland High School.

The bottom line? The NRA—and the gun manufacturers that fund it—value money over our children's lives.

But the NRA's time signing checks with our blood to buy politicians and win elections is up. We're coming for the NRA. And, together, we're going to end the epidemic of gun violence in America.

To take on the NRA directly next week, we need help from MoveOn members, including you, Eddie.

Will you please chip in $3 to support our work to fight the NRA in Dallas next week and MoveOn's relentless campaigning for gun control? Click here if you will.

Thanks for all you do.

Dear MoveOn member,

This is really exciting. As the country increasingly shifts its attention to the 2018 elections—and as MoveOn members are doing all they can to build a wave that ends Republican control of the House of Representatives and sweeps inspiring progressive candidates into state and local offices nationwide—MoveOn is launching a new website, digital toolset, and brand-new logo. To help celebrate this milestone, we've printed a batch of stickers with our new logo, and we're giving them away for free to MoveOn members like you!

Click here to order your FREE MoveOn logo sticker and put it on your car, bike, or laptop to showcase your proud progressive identity—and help show that we're everywhere!

One big intention of our updated website and new logo is to help showcase our people power. Our new logo is made up of three squares inspired by the signs that MoveOn members have been carrying—at both protests and victory rallies—for more than twenty years. And the logo moves upward and onward, just like our movement.

We have been eagerly anticipating sharing this with you—and the day is finally here! Want to help show that MoveOn members are everywhere as we head into this year's crucial midterm elections?

Can you help us spread this message? Click here to order your FREE MoveOn sticker before they're all gone!

MoveOn has been a pioneer at the intersection of politics and digital activism since our inception in 1998. We were the first organization to engage in the use of large-scale online petitions, email organizing, digital grassroots fundraising, distributed events, and online call tools, repeatedly giving our members new tools to leverage the connective power of the internet to achieve political change. More recently, we have launched our peer-to-peer text messaging tool, Spoke, as well as a Video Lab that's produced progressive, organic video content reaching nearly half a billion views in less than two years.

Using technology in smart ways has been a key part of how we make change. The launch of an updated website and set of tech tools—tied to our undertaking the biggest midterm campaign in our history—is another exciting step in our movement's history.

Be a part of that history. Click here to get your FREE MoveOn sticker now!

Have a petition idea for Inwood?

Petitions are powerful. Start a petition today to make your voice heard.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

I didn't know the power of petitions until I started creating them. They have helped me build real-world people power that helped save a few local families from being broken apart by Trump's deportation machine.

Click here to create your own petition to build power and support an issue, a person, or a group of people you care about in Inwood, or anywhere else in the country.

Here's one quick story:

We had 2 1/2 days. On a cold Saturday in November, 2017, we were asked to help a member of our community, Miriam Martinez-Lemus, avoid deportation before she was to board a plane for Guatemala and leave her daughter—who has diabetes and is a citizen of the United States—to fend for herself. Miriam's daughter's doctors said the medical system in Guatemala was not equipped to care for a child with complicated juvenile diabetes.

We immediately launched a MoveOn petition—signed by more than 10,000 MoveOn members like you—that lifted up Miriam's story, attracted media attention, and helped us mobilize dozens of people to a local demonstration and a vigil, which were also covered by local media.

And we won. The MoveOn petition effectively helped build the people power we needed to keep Miriam where she belonged—with her family.

By using MoveOn's user-friendly petition tools, you can create your very own petition.

Do you have any ideas for a petition for Inwood or nationwide that could build power on an issue you care about? Click here to start building power with your petition.

I know from personal experience that the MoveOn team will be there to support you, from helping build support for your petition by connecting you to other MoveOn members to reimbursing you for printing costs to deliver your petition in person—one of the best ways to get your message heard and make an impact.

Will you start a petition right now on an issue that you're passionate about that affects your community, or even the entire nation?

Thanks for all you do.

Major election shake-up

Stunning news out of Texas: Beto O'Rourke, "a peppy, rangy, toothy progressive" Senate candidate is STATISTICALLY TIED with Texas' far-right wingnut Senator Ted Cruz in a new poll.

Dear MoveOn member,

We won a special Senate election in Alabama.

We won in the special House election in PA-18—a district that Donald Trump won by 20 points; that's a 21-point swing in just 15 months.

And now, stunning news out of Texas: Beto O'Rourke, "a peppy, rangy, toothy progressive" Senate candidate is STATISTICALLY TIED with Texas' far-right wingnut Senator Ted Cruz in a new poll.1,2

Not only are O'Rourke and Cruz statistically tied, but O'Rourke's been able to match Cruz in fundraising—all while refusing money from Super PACs. Over the past three months, O'Rourke has come from behind to raise more than twice as much as Cruz. O'Rourke has the momentum.

But there's a big problem: The majority of Texans don't yet know enough about O'Rourke to have an opinion of him.3

If Beto O'Rourke is able to define himself and reach voters now, he will win. On the other hand, if Cruz is able to define O'Rourke before he can get his message out to voters, then he will lose. Which is where you come in.

Will you rush an urgent $3 donation to Beto O'Rourke right now, so that he can get his message out across Texas and fight against Ted Cruz's lies?

Yes, I'll chip in now.

MoveOn members in Texas voted overwhelmingly to support Beto O'Rourke. He's the real deal because:

  • He's refused to take any money from Super PACs, instead relying on hundreds of thousands of small-dollar grassroots donations from folks like you to fuel his work.4
  • He has already raised over $13 million from grassroots donations, including receiving 141,000 individual contributions in the past three months alone—far outpacing Cruz.5
  • He wants to know what Texans care about. He's held more than 200 town hall events across the state.6
  • He's fighting for universal health care coverage, unlike Cruz, who's led the fight to repeal the Affordable Care Act.7

We have a golden opportunity to send a true progressive from Texas to the Senate this fall, and maybe even tip the balance of power in the Senate. But Cruz has a huge network of donors—many of whom are millionaires and billionaires, dedicated to keeping Republican control in Congress, which means that O'Rourke has an uphill battle to combat Cruz's nearly limitless cash.

While O'Rourke is committed to small-dollar grassroots donations from folks like us, pro-Cruz Super PACs are standing by ready to dump millions of dollars into misleading ads to bad-mouth O'Rourke before the campaign even heats up. If O'Rourke doesn't have enough funds to even respond to these lies, then he will lose.

It's not fair, but that's the way it is. To take Cruz on, Beto O'Rourke needs us, right now, not later in September or October. Which is why I'm asking you today:

Will you chip in $3 to help Beto O'Rourke get his message out, before Ted Cruz and his mega-rich Super PACs paint Beto with smears and lies?

If we win in Texas, we truly can win anywhere. We could even take back the House AND Senate this fall. What's needed now is our early action, dedication, and commitment.

Together, we can help Beto O'Rourke make history. But we have to make an early investment to get it done.

Thanks for all you do.

You won't want to miss this book

This November, Stacey Abrams has the chance to make history. On the same night that Democrats could end Republican control of Congress, Stacey could become the first ever Black woman elected governor in the United States.

Dear MoveOn member,

This November, Stacey Abrams has the chance to make history. On the same night that Democrats could end Republican control of Congress, Stacey could become the first ever Black woman elected governor in the United States.

That's right, in the entire history of America, a Black woman has never been elected governor in any state—but Stacey is ready to change that.

In her new book out next week, "Minority Leader: How to Lead from the Outside and Make Real Change," Stacey not only shares her inspiring journey but also provides a handbook that applies to many other communities and individuals working for the common good.

Over 82% of MoveOn members in Georgia, where Stacey is running, voted to endorse her last year. Her book comes out right before her primary on May 22, and together we can help shine a national spotlight on her right before voters go to the polls. How? By helping to get her book on the best-seller list!

Click here to pre-order your copy—and help get Stacey's book on the best-seller list to help boost her profile before voters in Georgia go to the polls!

Stacey didn't grow up with much, so as an adult she has dedicated her career to giving back to her home state and helping make the lives of Georgians better. She founded the New Georgia Project, which registered over 200,000 voters of color from 2014 to 2016. She co-founded a financial services firm to help small businesses grow and bring more jobs to Georgia. And in 2011, she became the House minority leader in Georgia's General Assembly—the first Black woman to ever lead either party in the state.

In "Minority Leader," Stacey describes the experience faced by so many marginalized communities in our country: that institutional barriers are keeping dreams out of reach. But with passion—and compassion—she lays out a path to achieve those dreams and disrupt the systems that have kept them out of reach.

Click here to pre-order her book now, and help MoveOn get her book on the best-seller list!

Stacey Abrams has spent her life speaking up for marginalized communities, standing up to those in power, and showing up to make life better for everyone around her. Now it is our turn to do the same for her.

Thanks for all you do.

Sunday's national organizing call: Trump Is Not Above the Law

Join Karine Jean-Pierre to discuss the stakes of this fever-pitch moment for the Mueller investigation and how we can all take effective action in our communities to defend the investigation from Trump's interference.

Dear MoveOn member,

Donald Trump could fire special counsel Robert Mueller or his boss, Rod Rosenstein, or otherwise act to end his independent investigation any day. He's tried to do it more than once before—and as his personal lawyer, finances, and members of his inner circle get caught up in the web of investigations, he could recklessly react with a move that would push us into a constitutional crisis.1

That's why we have to be ready to resist such a move by Trump—and to make sure Americans of all walks of life and politicians of both parties stand up to declare, "Nobody is above the law."

This Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET (6:30 CT/5:30 MT/4:30 PT), MoveOn's senior strategist and national spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, will host a call to discuss the stakes of this fever-pitch moment and how we can all take effective action in our communities.

Because you have registered for our "Ready to Resist" series of national organizing calls in the past, a few minutes before the training begins, you'll receive a call at the phone number you previously listed. No further actions is required, though you can click here to register a different phone number or come back to this link at the time of the call to listen via computer.

RSVP to join the emergency call: Trump Is Not Above the Law

For the first time in months, there is finally momentum on the bipartisan legislation to insulate Mueller's investigation from Trump's attempts to overpower it—the Senate Judiciary Committee chair will bring it to a vote, and the House bill has picked up four new Republican sponsors, leading one Capitol Hill journalist to declare that "the dam is beginning to break" (which is great—but also means we have our work cut out for us to get the other 200+ House Republicans on board!).2

This Sunday's call will be a strategy update and training on how to build this pressure and protect the investigation—or be ready if Trump moves to end it.

Click here to share info about the call on Facebook. And click here to share info about the call on Twitter.

We can take action right now to defend the Mueller investigation and ensure we all learn the truth about Russian interference in our elections. And we can also keep building our massive rapid-response network that's ready to act if Trump seeks to end the investigation.

MoveOn members have already generated tens of thousands of calls to the Senate and House to pass bipartisan legislation to defend the Mueller investigation from White House interference—and now is a critical moment to increase that pressure and pull more Republicans, as well as Democrats, to defend democracy rather than the demagogue in the White House.

And MoveOn, alongside dozens of partner organizations such as the Sierra Club, Public Citizen, Stand Up America, March for Truth, and SEIU, has built a remarkable network of more than 900 events with over 360,000 participants that would launch within 24 hours of a firing. But there's still work to shore up that rapid-response plan and to invite even more folks in our communities to join in this work.

We'll be discussing these opportunities and others on Sunday—and this call will catapult us directly into action we can take right after the call and into next week. And you'll get a call at the number you used when you previously registered for our series of national organizing calls—but click here if you want to change your number, or return to this page if you want to listen via computer.

It's no secret that our democracy has always been imperfect. It has left out and failed too many of us, especially communities of color, that have been marginalized in America for centuries. Together, we can build a democracy that respects us all—one in which we truly experience equal protection under the law and have access to participate in our communities and our government.

Trump is attempting to undo the progress that we, and generations before us, fought for and won—and he's escalating his attacks to further his racist and destructive agenda, as he seeks to shred our civic institutions and the fiber of our critical, if imperfect, democracy. He is a man whose illegal and unconstitutional missile strike on Syria may have been timed to distract from the legal issues swamping him at home. There's no limit to the destruction he could cause if we don't stand up, together, to declare that nobody, not even Donald Trump, is above the law—and hold accountable the Republican enablers who continue to turn a blind eye to his abuses.

Thank you for joining us in this fight. Hope you can join us on Sunday's call.

Thanks for all you do.

Call Now: Senate needs to #StopPompeo

Your senator is a key vote to block Trump's war cabinet and Pompeo's nomination to secretary of state. Your senator is a key vote to block Trump's war cabinet and Pompeo's nomination to secretary of state.

Dear MoveOn member,

Donald Trump's march to war continues. The illegal attack in Syria last week marks the latest in a series of moves that the Trump administration has taken toward aggressive military action.

Call Senator Charles E. Schumer now and tell him to take the first step in blocking Trump's war cabinet by voting no on Mike Pompeo's nomination for secretary of state.

Just weeks into the job, there are reports that newly appointed national security adviser John Bolton is encouraging Trump's worst warmongering instincts; battling against military advisors like Defense Secretary Jim Mattis who promoted restraint.1

Pompeo would be another "yes man" in the Trump administration, bringing our country closer to war. Pompeo has used his position at the CIA to politicize data and uses his influence to stoke conflict.2 Plus, he wants to roll back the successful Iran nuclear deal, throwing away years of hard work and diplomacy.3

Click here to call Sen. Schumer and tell him to vote no on Pompeo.

Sen. Schumer is a key vote in the Senate and voted for Pompeo when he was nominated to be director of the CIA. But several senators who voted for him as CIA director have said that the role of secretary of state is fundamentally different and they will vote against his confirmation.5 If all Democrats and independents stand strong against this nomination now—along with Senator Rand Paul, who opposes Pompeo, and Senator John McCain, who isn't voting—we can defeat his nomination.

Pompeo's record demonstrates that he is unfit to represent America to the world. Beyond his warmongering stance, he is also Islamophobic, a climate change denier, anti-choice, anti-LGTBQ rights, and in favor of torture.4 No Senator should endorse these hateful views being broadcast globally in our names.

That is why Senators Tim Kaine, Dianne Feinstein, Amy Klobuchar, and Brian Schatz have already declared that they will switch their vote and oppose Pompeo. Now we need Sen. Schumer to join them.

The vote on Pompeo is likely to happen next week. Act now: Click here to call Sen. Schumer and demand that he vote to #StopPompeo.

Thanks for all you do.

Trump’s reckless, unconstitutional war-making

In the wake of Trump bombing Syria, what do we need to do? Stop Pompeo. Invest in diplomacy. Seek congressional oversight of US war-making. Welcome refugees. In the wake of Trump bombing Syria, what do we need to do? Stop Pompeo. Invest in diplomacy. Seek congressional oversight of US war-making. Welcome refugees.

Dear MoveOn member,

No. War.

War is not the answer. Trump's illegal military strike on Syria last night did nothing to alleviate the wrenching devastation of the seven-year-old Syrian civil war. And MoveOn members cannot and will not allow more war to be the way Trump—struggling, isolated, reckless—tries to distract from the crises in his own White House and his floundering presidency.

Trump has been making moves to become a "war president"—from his obsession with a military parade to his recent picks of war hawks John Bolton as national security adviser and Mike Pompeo for secretary of state to last night's reckless and unconstitutional attack.

Some Democrats—including Senators Chris Murphy and Bernie Sanders and Representatives Ro Khanna, Barbara Lee, and Jerry Nadler—have spoken up with a clear and compelling message, calling this attack unconstitutional, illegal, and destructive and demanding both congressional authority for any war-making and an investment in diplomacy instead of in missile strikes.

Here are a few ways MoveOn members are taking action to respond to last night:

  • Demanding real solutions to alleviate the terrible suffering of the Syrian people—such as welcoming refugees whose lives have been destroyed by this war into the safety of the United States and sending aid to the 3.2 million people the U.N. says require urgent assistance. Syria is one of the banned countries on the Muslim Ban, which blocks all immigrant and non-immigrant visas.1 And one of the most shocking and telling statistics about this current moment is that the U.S. has only admitted 11—yes, 11—Syrian refugees in the past year.2 Add your name to demand that the U.S. welcome more Syrian refugees.
  • Working to stop Mike Pompeo. This strike is unconstitutional and reckless—and every political leader should acknowledge that. While we can't reverse Trump's decision to launch missiles, and while John Bolton's appointment does not require confirmation hearings, we can stop the Islamophobic and anti-diplomacy hawk Mike Pompeo from becoming secretary of state. Eleven Senators and counting have already said they'll oppose his nomination—and if every Democrat and Independent unites with a handful of Republicans, we can stop Pompeo and confront Trump's war Cabinet. Sign the petition to call on the Senate to reject Donald Trump's nomination of Mike Pompeo for secretary of state.
  • Getting ready for rapid-response protests in case of a major escalation of Trump's war-making. With allies, we are readying a rapid-response network that can launch anti-war events around the country should Trump escalate further. This network—anchored by dedicated MoveOn members, with 870 actions already prepared—has been in development for a year. Text UNITED to 668366 to get text updates from MoveOn, including invitations to rapid-response rallies and timely call alerts.

Thousands of MoveOn members, and our whole staff team, spent Thursday and Friday this week preparing our mobilizations if Trump fired Rosenstein or Mueller. That's still a very real threat, and for all we know, he's hoping to get a bump of international goodwill from this bombing escapade—and ride that to even more reckless action and a constitutional crisis.

The good news is we are prepared and mobilized. MoveOn members have been fighting unjust wars for years and combating the Trump presidency at every turn. And now is a time to speak up—because we are the leaders we need, and our actions can force politicians to follow.

Thanks for all you do.

Add your name: Stop Pompeo

One of my worst fears is that Donald Trump gets the United States into another disastrous war. One of my worst fears is that Donald Trump gets the United States into another disastrous war.

Dear MoveOn member,

Two weeks ago marked the fifteenth anniversary of the Iraq invasion. I was one of those who stood with MoveOn members against that war.

You knew and I knew that the war in Iraq would bring forth unintended consequences.

Fifteen years later, we now know how horrific those consequences were, not only for the over 4,400 American troops who were killed and the nearly 32,000 who were wounded, but also for tens of millions of people in Iraq and the entire Middle East. One of my worst fears is that Donald Trump, as president, gets the United States into another disastrous war.

That is one of the reasons I oppose the nomination of Mike Pompeo, whose hawkish views on Iran and North Korea could very well lead us into another unnecessary war.

We need a secretary of state who understands the importance of diplomacy and international engagement to advance American interests and values.

Reject Donald Trump's nomination of Mike Pompeo for secretary of state.

The United States needs a secretary of state who will represent the best principles of our nation to the rest of the world.

Pompeo is a supporter of the Global Gag Rule, which hurts our ability to promote women's reproductive health around the world. He opposes LGBTQ rights. As the top recipient of campaign donations from the Koch brothers, he has stymied action on one of the world's most serious security threats: global climate change. He supports the use of torture. He has longstanding relationships with anti-Muslim extremists. And his hawkish views on Iran and North Korea could very well lead us into another disastrous war.

You've likely heard that Donald Trump has also appointed extreme war hawk John Bolton as his national security advisor. Let me level with you: We can't do anything about Bolton, but Pompeo requires Senate confirmation.

Let us stand together to block his confirmation.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then please pass it along to everyone you know.

Thanks for all you do.

The mad king

It's been 520 days since Election Day 2016—a moment that will live forever in outrageous infamy because it opened the door of the White House to a "mad king" and his gaggle of criminals, warmongers, and sycophants.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

It's been 520 days since Election Day 2016—a moment that will live forever in outrageous infamy because it opened the door of the White House to a "mad king" and his gaggle of criminals, warmongers, and sycophants.

But I try not to dwell on Donald Trump. Election Day 2016 also marked the first day of an ascendant, powerful, fierce, and winning progressive Resistance.

A Resistance, powered in very large measure, by MoveOn members like you. A Resistance that's been on the move—day and night—to save health care, protect special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, keep Trump from barreling our country into another war,  stand proud and strong with a wide range of communities on the front lines of the mad king's brutal attacks, and fuel historic electoral wins from Virginia, to Alabama, to Pennsylvania.

Our efforts are reaching a fever pitch. And MoveOn's team is working around the clock, relying on MoveOn members like us to power some of the most effective grassroots Resistance work ever—with our actions and with our financial contributions. MoveOn is leading key advocacy fights and gearing up for a mammoth effort on electoral fights this November—juggling so many crucial priorities.

My friend, it's time to make it clear that we're in the Resistance for the long haul. We're in it to win. Will you chip in $3 to power MoveOn's essential leadership in the progressive Resistance?

Yes, I'll chip in right now.

As hard as you've worked, as much as you've sacrificed, I'm writing you now to ring the alarm bell and ask for even more from you—I'm asking you to support MoveOn, one of the finest people-powered forces in the nation.

As Mueller narrows in on the White House's closest cronies, securing indictments and guilty pleas, the mad king is getting, well … madder. His tweets earlier this week show a man who is unhinged and seems ready to take his reckless wrath out on our Constitution and our democracy. And that makes him much, much more dangerous.

MoveOn's team is working very hard at this apex moment, especially focused on defending the Mueller investigation, standing with brave young students across the country who are leading the crusade to break the NRA's stranglehold on American politics, and blocking the nomination of Mike Pompeo, a pro-torture, anti-diplomacy warmonger, who has no place as secretary of state, where, alongside the equally-dangerous John Bolton, he'd help march us to new wars.

Frankly, I've never seen MoveOn's team more resource-stretched—and as resolute. And I happen to know from MoveOn's executive directors that MoveOn has been stretched for the past few months, rising to meet the enormous need for its work. There's a real need at MoveOn for funds to expand election staffing, run high-impact media campaigns, flood Congress with calls, and so much more.

Please. Will you support the Resistance—not only through your volunteerism, which is absolutely critical—but also by chipping in $3 to MoveOn now? Just click here.

I don't talk about this much in my blogs, or videos, or when on the road, but there are days when the pain of this moment is so wrenching, I want to turn off the news. Look away.

There are days when I'm bone tired, and I've just got to think it's a normal reaction to one of the most frightening and disturbing moments that I've ever experienced.

But then—thankfully—with a deep breath, I'm able to push myself back into motion—arm in arm with MoveOn members like you.

You and I are here—committed this progressive Resistance—for a reason.

It's up to us to fight for the very soul of our nation.

I believe with all my heart that this is the fight of our lives.

And yes. We've been fighting for more than a stunning 520 days, but we're not giving up now. In fact, we're doubling down to win. Because we know well that, the dawn of a new day is coming.

Please join me and tens of thousands of other MoveOn members by chipping in $3—or whatever you can afford.

Yes, I'm in! I'll chip in right now.

Thanks for all you do.

Let Senators Breastfeed on the Senate Floor

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Rachel P-N of PL+US, and I started a petition to Members of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, Sen. Richard Shelby (AL-1), and Sen. Mitch McConnell (KY-1), which says:

We urge you to make the Senate more welcoming to Senators who are new parents, by allowing these Senators to take paid family leave and not be physically present for votes, and to bring their babies to the floor within the first year of the child's life.

My name is Rachel, and my Senator, Tammy Duckworth, made history -- by giving birth to a daughter!

In 230 years Senator Duckworth is the first Senator to give birth while in office, and as an Illinois voter and mom of two adorable kids, including a newborn, it makes me so proud.

Like me, and most new moms in the country, I bet the challenges around returning to work are already on her mind.

Senate rules prevent her from taking maternity leave, at least not without missing votes! And they don̢۪t let her bring her new baby on the Senate floor -- so she might really struggle to prioritize breastfeeding when she has to rush back in time for votes.

These Senate rules are ridiculously outdated - and send a terrible signal to employers everywhere.

That̢۪s why I've started a campaign to change the rules to allow all Senators to bring their babies to the floor (within the first year of the child's life) -- join me!

We have a severe and persistent leadership gap in this country. Just 5% of CEOs in Fortune 500 companies, 8% of Governors and 19% of Congress are women.

As a result, there are so few leaders who have had the experience of giving birth at all, let alone while serving in office. It's no surprise that our policies around birth and babies in America are among the worst in the world.

We need to change that so new parents can fully lead and represent us.

As Senator Duckworth says "whether you are a woman or a man, whether you're breastfeeding or not, or you've adopted, you should be able to bring that child on to the floor and continue to do your job."

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

—Rachel P-N

Precipice of a constitutional crisis

Firing Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein—who's overseeing the special counsel's investigation—would set off a constitutional crisis that would shake the foundation of our democracy.

Dear MoveOn member,

We've come to the most dangerous moment yet of Donald Trump's presidency and are on the precipice of a constitutional crisis.

In the aftermath of the FBI's raid of the office, home, and hotel room of Trump's longtime personal attorney and self-described "fixer" Michael Cohen, Trump is accusing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of being "A TOTAL WITCH HUNT!!!" and "an attack on our country."1,2

Trump went so far as to openly admit to reporters on Monday night that he's considering firing Mueller, saying, "We'll see what happens. Many people have said [I] should fire him."3

Let's digest that. Trump would fire the leader of the investigation that has already landed multiple guilty pleas and dozens of indictments, and is the most serious effort to understand Russian interference in our elections.

Firing Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein—who's overseeing the special counsel's investigation—would set off a constitutional crisis that would shake the foundation of our democracy. And, Eddie, we've reached a crisis point: I put the odds that Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein within the next 10 days at better than 50-50.

We must be ready because our response will help determine whether Congress uses its constitutional power to rein in Trump—or not. And that's why I'm writing to you right now.

MoveOn has had immense foresight to spend months building a rapid-response network—now numbering 800 planned events and more than 317,000 people—to put into action immediately after Mueller is fired or Trump otherwise acts to end the investigation.

But MoveOn still needs to raise $250,000 to have the resources to support the network in the chaotic aftermath of a firing. Can you chip in $3 to MoveOn right now?

Yes, I'll chip in right now.

Cohen has been one of Trump's most trusted advisers for the past decade.4

In response to questions from the media about Cohen paying Stormy Daniels $130,000 before the 2016 election, Cohen tweeted, "A person who deserves my loyalty receives it. I will always protect our @POTUS [President of the United States]."5

When the media reported that Trump's first wife, Ivana, said in a deposition that Trump had raped her, Cohen told the reporter, "You write a story that has Mr. Trump's name in it, with the word 'rape,' and I'm going to mess your life up ... for as long as you're on this frickin' planet ... you're going to have judgments against you, so much money, you'll never know how to get out from underneath it."6

The search warrant that enabled the FBI to seize privileged communications between Trump and Cohen resulted from a tip from Mueller but was obtained by the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and required high-level authorization within Trump's Justice Department.7

It's an extraordinary step for the Justice Department to take—bringing us to this fever-pitched moment.

Click here to chip in $3 to MoveOn and help defend the Mueller investigation by supporting more than 800 protests across the country, which will take place if Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein.

MoveOn is working at a feverish pace to put all of the pieces in place in time—and now time may be very short. MoveOn's plans are bold and detailed; here's a look at what's planned:

  • Promote and strengthen the rapid-response network to reach even more people before Trump fires Mueller or Rosenstein—and have the resources to connect to hundreds of thousands more in the immediate aftermath of a firing.
  • Support the over 800 events already planned. MoveOn will quickly hire extra on-the-ground support in key cities, run ads, hire video crews and photographers, distribute signs, and hire security, if needed.
  • Cut through the right-wing media and Trump's propaganda machine. MoveOn will use its megaphone to reach tens of millions through its rapid-response videos, on social media, and by helping to equip its millions of members with signs, talking points, and everything else they'll need to connect with neighbors about this crisis.
  • Invest in a sustained campaign. If Trump causes a constitutional crisis, our response won't be limited to just one day—it will be every day. MoveOn will demand that Democrats and Republicans take action—and won't stop demanding they act until they do.

Will you chip in $3—or whatever you can afford—to MoveOn to help out?

Yes, I'll chip in right now.

The future is very much in our hands. And, together, we can meet this moment—as full of peril as it is.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich
