No regrets

This is it, my friends. If McConnell can't get it done by August 14, Trumpcare is likely dead. But McConnell is offering Republican senators all kinds of deals to get the last few votes he needs, and he wouldn't be delaying the start of the recess unless he thought that he had at least a decent chance to get the votes.

Hi Eddie,

When I wrote you earlier this week, Mitch McConnell was offering Republican senators all kinds of deals to get the last few votes he needs to pass Trumpcare. Today, he released a revised version of the bill—and amazingly, it's just as bad.

The bill still kicks millions of Americans off health care, slashes Medicaid, and defunds Planned Parenthood. But the new version also threatens protections for people with pre-existing conditions—which can be anything from cancer to pregnancy to mental illness to diabetes to addiction.

The pressure on my Republican colleagues to fall into line is incredible. McConnell doesn’t have the votes to pass a bill yet—but he is planning on keeping us in Washington, D.C., through August 14 to force Trumpcare through.

That’s why I’m writing to urgently ask you to support MoveOn’s powerful and sophisticated grassroots campaign to compel three (or more) Republican senators to put their constituents’ lives and well-being ahead of party loyalty by chipping in $3 right now. Are you in?

Yes, I'm in! I'll chip in now to defeat the Republicans' callous health care plan and support MoveOn's work to win over senators who are still on the fence.

For more details on what MoveOn is doing and why your support matters, see my message from earlier this week, below:

Dear MoveOn member,

Mitch McConnell just announced that he plans to bring Trumpcare up for a final vote before senators go home to meet with our constituents—he's taken the unprecedented step of delaying the start of the August state work period until August 14 to give himself time to get the bill through.

Over the next three weeks, every Republican senator will face enormous pressure from the GOP to get on board, so we need to put even more pressure on them to vote no.

Can you help MoveOn cover the costs of rapid-response digital ads, innovative tools that make it even easier to drive constituent calls to Congress, coordination of events in D.C. and around the country that put constituents at the heart of this debate, and last-minute grassroots organizing to defeat this catastrophic health care plan by chipping in $3 right now?

Yes, I'm in! I'll chip in now to defeat the Republicans' callous health care plan and support MoveOn's work to win over senators who are still on the fence.

Why would anyone support this bill? How does this bill help real people with real challenges?

It's simple: It doesn't. (Because, and this is crucial: The Republicans drafted their health care repeal bill in secret, without a single Democrat or woman in the room.)

So here's the message I'm sending to my GOP colleagues in the Senate: This shouldn't be a matter of automatically supporting this bill if you're a Republican or objecting just because you're a Democrat. This is about what's right and what's wrong. Taking away health care from 22 million Americans in order to give the wealthiest of the wealthy a tax cut is just plain wrong.

MoveOn has played an enormous role in stopping Trumpcare already, and we could well be on the cusp of defeating it. But we're not there yet. Will you help MoveOn's campaign to stop the GOP's terrifying, self-serving health care bill once and for all?

Yes, I'll rush a contribution of $3 to help MoveOn members FLOOD on-the-fence Republican senators with calls, pack events and offices with constituents, and share poignant personal stories.

Thanks for all you do.

VIDEO: The Resistance is local

If we really want to take the Resistance to the next level, and see some real victories in the fight for progressive change, we need to get involved in every state and local election this year, next year, and every year.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

This is Eric Schneiderman, New York's attorney general. And I have a message to share with you: When the right wing goes low, we go local.

The fight against the Trump agenda runs, in part, through our state and local elections. And as I explain in a new video I made with MoveOn.org and Humanity for Progress, it's one we can take on together—building lasting political power for the progressive movement.

Will you take a moment to watch and share this video on how we can win the fight for a progressive future?

The Resistance is Local

(Not on Facebook? You can also click here to watch it on YouTube.)

From fighting the Muslim Ban and defending reproductive rights to resisting attacks on our immigrant communities and tackling climate change, local and state governments are leading the charge. It was a group of state attorneys general whose suit blocked Trump's initial travel ban. And secretaries of state and other local officials are right now rebuffing Trump's fraudulent voter suppression commission's demand for voter information.

We've seen an inspiring surge in grassroots energy—historic marches, countless actions, nonstop phone calls. Now, if we really want to take the Resistance to the next level—and see some real victories in the fight for progressive change—we need that same energy in every state and local election this year, next year, and every year.

It may take a couple of years to see progress in Washington again—but we can start to improve people's lives, protect our rights and liberties, and defend our communities TODAY at the state and local level.

Click here to watch our three-minute video, and then share it to engage your friends in "going local," as we fight for our democracy and our communities.

Together, we can resist and we can win.

—Eric Schneiderman

Sign the petition: Make Trumpcare mandatory for Congress

Will you sign and share my petition telling Congress that should they vote to pass Trumpcare, they must give up eligibility for the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program?

Add your name: No taxpayer subsidies for Congressional health insurance if they pass Trumpcare

Should the Republicans in the U.S. Congress pass Trumpcare, legally make members of Congress, their staffs, and their respective families eligible ONLY for individual insurance plans offered through Trumpcare insurance exchanges, without any additional benefits or subsidies provided by the U.S. government. This group must personally experience the effects of Trumpcare and be barred from the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

If Republican legislators are going to introduce massive, structural change into the health care sector, it is only fair that they should personally experience the effects of this change. Direct empirical experience of the law will be the best test of its proclaimed benefits.

We should let Congress enjoy the same quality of insurance that will be available to Americans on the self-insured market.

That's why I started a petition to end taxpayer subsidies for Congress's health care and to make Trumpcare mandatory for members of Congress, their staffs, and their respective families if they vote to pass Trumpcare.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

A tortured metaphor

This is Ben & Jerry. That's right, that Ben & Jerry, the ice cream guys. As summer heats up, ice cream will refresh us. But with corruption and corporate control in Washington hotter than ever, we'll need more than ice cream to revive our democracy.

Hi, fellow MoveOn member,

This is Ben & Jerry. That's right, that Ben & Jerry, the ice cream guys.

As summer heats up, ice cream will refresh us. But with corruption and corporate control in Washington hotter than ever, we'll need more than ice cream to revive our democracy.

If you think we tortured that metaphor, it's nothing compared to how Big Money is torturing our democracy.

Whether you care about affordable, accessible health care, the climate, closing private prisons, reducing military spending, or making an economy that works for everyone (not just the rich guys), there's one thing that connects all these fights: It's Big Money vs. the rest of us.

That's why we've partnered with MoveOn to offer you a way to speak out against Big Money a thousand times over: a stamp to mark your dollar bills with the message, "Resist Big Money in Politics: Amend the Constitution." MoveOn members have been sending that same message through phone calls, rallies, and petitions for years. Now, you can join 65,000 STAMPeders (Ben’s the Head Stamper) who have been spreading that message by turning money into media.

Click here to get your own "Resist Big Money In Politics" stamp from MoveOn that you can use to (totally legally) stamp this message directly on your dollars. To sweeten the deal even more, one lucky stamper will win a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream!

Look, we're tired of being on the defense. Fighting against Trumpcare. Fighting against the Muslim ban. Fighting against a corporate giveaway called an "infrastructure plan" and a massive transfer of wealth to the 1% in the form of a Draconian budget. Fighting against climate-change denial. Fighting against Trump's reckless abuse of power over his team's ties to Russia.

We'd rather be fighting for a few things that we believe in! Medicare for All! Debt free college for all! A gamechanging investment in clean energy! Equality for all Americans!

But we won't win fights FOR any of these things until we deal with the elephant in the room: the destructive force of Big Money in politics. So let's take matters in our own hands ... literally.

Click here to join hundreds of thousands of fellow Americans by getting one of our stamps that will allow you to turn your dollar bills into mini mobile billboards.

Money is the original viral marketing. As it moves from hand to hand, the average stamped bill gets seen by 875 people. So taking 15 seconds to stamp your bill is a lot of "bang for your buck!"

Seriously, though, stamping is effective and fun. Your message gets through because putting it on money is disruptive. And with what we're facing from Washington and corporate media, we'll have to use every tool we have to get our message out.

The power can be in your hands!

Click here to get your very own stamp from MoveOn! (Don't forget: One lucky stamper will win a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream!)

Onward to a summer of stamping, saving democracy ... and ice cream, of course.

—Ben & Jerry

Ice cream is delicious. This is disgusting.

It's Ben & Jerry, the ice cream guys. We wish we were writing to you about something delicious (like ice cream). But instead, we're writing about a big problem that leaves a foul taste in our mouths:

Hi, fellow MoveOn member,

It's Ben & Jerry, the ice cream guys. We wish we were writing to you about something delicious (like ice cream). But instead, we're writing about a big problem that leaves a foul taste in our mouths: money in politics.

More money than ever is flooding into politics in the age of Donald Trump. While Trump distracts us with his latest scandals and tweets, the richest 1%, corporations, and their lobbyists are more influential than ever behind the scenes in getting their way on the issues and buying our elections—while pushing the rest of us to the sidelines.

So what do we do about it? One word: RESIST. This time by stamping (and then spending) dollar bills with a simple message: "Resist Money in Politics—Amend the Constitution." (It's perfectly legal.)

It was Abraham Lincoln who said, "Public opinion is everything. Without it nothing can succeed. With it nothing can fail."

Stamping every single paper bill that you spend is a powerful way to get our resistance message against Donald Trump and the broken Congress out there.

Click here to chip in $15 or more to MoveOn and get your own "Resist Big Money In Politics—Amend the Constitution" stamp. To sweeten the deal even more, one lucky stamper will win a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream!

Stamping money out of politics is one of the most important causes that the resistance can fight for. That's why one lucky stamper will win a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream.

Because whether you care about affordable, accessible health care, the climate, closing private prisons, reducing military spending, or making an economy that works for everyone—not just the rich guys—there's one theme that connects all these fights: Big Money vs. the rest of us.

Each stamped bill will be seen an average of 875 times while it's in circulation, so taking a few minutes a day to stamp the money in your wallet is a lot of "bang for your buck!" As your bills circulate, so will your message about reclaiming our democracy.

And while you're taking action individually, you're helping MoveOn's collective actions to take our democracy back—which is key if we're going to overpower the Big Money that wants to keep buying and selling our political system.

With what we're facing from Washington and corporate media these days, we'll have to use every tool we have to get our resistance message out there.

Click here to get your "Resist Money in Politics" stamp right now—and join the resistance with your wallet. And remember, one lucky stamper will win a year's supply of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream.

Let's get stamping!

—Ben & Jerry

Langston Hughes and Alfre Woodard (Watch this video)

A friend recently introduced me to a classic Langston Hughes poem, "Let America Be America Again." Despite being nearly a century old, it's amazingly relevant today.

Dear MoveOn member,

A friend recently introduced me to a classic Langston Hughes poem, "Let America Be America Again." Despite being nearly a century old, it's amazingly relevant today. The poem speaks beautifully to the American ideal, how our reality has fallen short of that, and how together we can make this country the country it has the potential to be.

MoveOn partnered with award-winning filmmaker Frank Chi and actress Alfre Woodard to turn the poem into a video just in time for July 4.

The resulting video blew me away and I'm excited to share it with you. Click here to watch it and then share it with friends and family.

Let America Be America Again

(Not on Facebook? Click here to watch the video on YouTube.)

As we approach Independence Day, it's important that we reflect on what our country has become and what we can do to make it better. I hope that you'll take a moment to watch, discuss, and share the video with friends and family this weekend.
