Some (pretty darn important) questions for Democrats

Please watch and share my latest video with MoveOn. It's a call to action for all Democrats in Congress to throw away their (very) old political playbooks.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

I don’t mean to be impertinent, but I have some (pretty darn important) questions for Senate Democrats in Washington, D.C.

And, with stakes as high as they are, I'm guessing you do, too.

Some Democrats are starting to stand up—boycotting committee hearings, joining protests, and promising to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee—but we need all Senate Democrats to catch up with the resistance in the streets and do their part in this unprecedented moment.

Please watch and share my latest video with MoveOn. It's a call to action for all Democrats in Congress to throw away their (very) old political playbooks.

(You can also view it on YouTube by clicking here.)

Senate

Look, this is not just another conservative administration. This is not a normal president.

By and large, Democrats have to be tougher and louder and make an unprecedented ruckus. Now.

They have to fight as if our lives and the well-being of our communities depend on it.

Because they do.

Thank you for watching this call to action and then sharing it with your family and friends.

And thanks for all you do.

—Robert Reich

Tell us about your "#ResistTrumpTuesday" rally—and join the debrief call tonight!

Thousands of people took part! How was your #ResistTrumpTuesday rally?

Dear Eddie,

Thank you for attending a #ResistTrumpTuesday rally today to demand a stop to Trump's #SwampCabinet, and to declare #NoBanNoWall.

Big votes are happening today, and Trump has said he will announce his Supreme Court nominee at 8 p.m. ET tonight. Your participation in the rally, along with thousands of people at more than 120 events, demonstrates to elected officials and the media that we are watching not only how each senator votes, but if Senate Democrats and Republicans of conscience are using all the tools they have, such as withholding consent, to stop Trump's unconstitutional agenda. And you've already made headlines and received responses from senators!1,2

Can you take a few moments to tell us about your experience?

Your feedback is critical—it helps us learn and maximize our impact as we plan future actions.

In addition to telling us about your experience, here are a few important next steps:

  • National Debrief Call - TONIGHT, Tuesday, January 31, 9 p.m. ET (8 CT/7 MT/6 PT). FW: Gut-wrenching developments (here's our response)

Hi Eddie—I just wanted to make sure that you saw Victoria's email.

Dear MoveOn member,

This weekend, Americans in dozens of major cities showed up at airports to protect the rights of and demand respect for refugees, Muslims, and other immigrants. MoveOn members were among the thousands that rallied, calling for #NoBanNoWalls.

But it's not just what's been taking place in the last few days. Every day we've been inspired by acts of resistance and people organizing for change. Last Tuesday, more than 15,000 MoveOn members and allies gathered at 200 events across the country to send a clear message to Democrats and Republicans alike: Stop Donald Trump's #SwampCabinet of bigots and billionaires.

The office building in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey have their offices, had never before had such a big crowd. Staff at Senator Ted Cruz's office in Texas called the police to disperse the crowd. And New Yorkers flooded the entire block around Senators Chuck Schumer's and Kirsten Gillibrand's office building, with hundreds standing in the driving rain for an hour.

Each day brings a new wave of gut-wrenching developments—a ban on refugees and many Muslim immigrants, preparations to reopen CIA "dark sites" that had been used for torture, a push for both the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines, the authorization of a border wall, gag orders on scientists at federal agencies, and attacks on the press.1,2,3,4,5,6

That's why we're committed to organizing public protests and taking action in the weeks and months ahead—to let Republicans know that they'll be held accountable and to put Democrats on notice that they need to stand up and resist.

This is a moment of overwhelming grassroots energy. 60,000 people joined the first emergency conference call we organized with the Working Families Party and People's Action to plan upcoming resistance actions, when we had budgeted for just 1,000 people—but we weren't going to turn anyone away. Now, we have to raise money to support this growing movement with more calls, more organizing, more actions, and more investment. Which is why I'm writing with a personal request:

Can you chip in $3 to help MoveOn build the resistance to Trump in the weeks and months ahead?

Yes, I'll chip in to help grow the resistance.

We know that members of Congress hear us. Last week, Democrats voted in unison against Rex Tillerson's nomination for secretary of state in committee and successfully delayed the confirmation of Jeff Sessions for attorney general.7,8 Multiple Democratic members of Congress showed up at the airport protests. And we're seeing impact on policy as well: Republicans have missed their own deadline for a plan to take health care away from tens of millions of Americans, because pressure from their voters is helping drive deeper the fracture points between them.9 But we all know this won't be enough. And too many Democrats in Congress are still treating this like business as usual.10

We need sustained action on an unprecedented scale to stop the Trump Republican agenda, pressure Democrats to stand strong, defend frontline communities, rebuild progressive power, and keep our constitutional democracy intact.

Here's some of what that looks like:

  • Fueling the pushback against the shocking Muslim ban and refugee freeze. MoveOn members have distributed tens of thousands of signs saying, "No Muslim Ban / No Border Wall / Our Communities Stand Tall." Now we're joining up with peaceful, legal protests at airports and community gathering spaces around the country.
  • Helping to organize #ResistTrumpTuesdays, as we did this week and will continue to do with our allies at the Working Families Party, People's Action, and other partners.
  • Flooding congressional phone lines. MoveOn members made more than 15,000 calls to defend health care this past week. MoveOn members and our partners filled up the voicemails and overwhelmed the offices of both Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake.11
  • Confronting elected officials at public events. Recently, one Republican congressman literally slipped out of an event early, through a back door, to avoid coming face to face with passionate constituents who were begging him not to take away their health care.12 On Thursday, as Trump met with Republicans in Philadelphia to plot the overthrow of health care as we know it, thousands of people protested outside. We have a plan to similarly turn up the heat on key members of Congress during the upcoming February recess.
  • Turning out in force in Washington, D.C., and around the country, so the media and public know and see that the majority will not be silent. We stood shoulder to shoulder with millions during the Women's March, and we stood with Michael Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Cher, and a host of civic and grassroots leaders in New York on the eve of the inauguration. MoveOn members also joined emergency rallies following news of Trump's executive actions on pipelines and deportations.
  • Cutting through the Trump administration's lies using our own megaphone of social media, breakthrough videos, and community meetings, and by defending the free press that's under attack by this administration.
  • And so much more.

More than 60,000 MoveOn members and allies joined our first emergency conference call. Nearly 30,000 joined our second call last night, and we're preparing for another round of national actions this Tuesday (that's tomorrow!). But it's going to take significant resources to allow us to escalate our work. Will you chip in $3 today?

Yes, I'll chip in to help resist Trump and the GOP-controlled Congress.

Thanks for all you do.

Trump's Muslim ban (Huge backlash)

During his campaign, Donald Trump called for a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the U.S. Now, he's making that threat a reality.

Dear MoveOn member,

During his campaign, Donald Trump called for a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the U.S.

Now, he's making that threat a reality.

Trump's executive order banning all immigrants, visitors, and even green card holders from seven countries—Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen—is throwing hundreds of thousands of Americans, immigrants, and their family members into limbo.1

Immigrants with valid visas, green card holders, spouses of U.S. citizens, dual nationals, and students from these countries are being told not to leave the U.S. because they won’t be let back in. And Trump froze the refugee program.

This is a moment when all Americans—Christians, Jews, Muslims, non-religious people... everyone—must stand together for our values. Will you chip in $3 to help fight back?

Yes, I'll chip in $3 to help fight Trump's un-American Muslim ban.

MoveOn sprung into action immediately—spreading tens of thousands of signs with a welcoming and inclusive message, driving nearly 7 million online video views of the locally-organized protest at JFK Airport in New York City, and recruiting MoveOn members to fast-growing, volunteer-led protests and vigils that are happening this weekend at airports and community spaces.

The remarkable, spontaneous actions we're supporting are only the latest in a week fueled by powerful resistance energy since the Women's Marches last Saturday.

And to keep the energy going beyond this weekend, we're:

  • Gearing up for more rallies and protests around the country to resist Trump. Last Tuesday, 15,000 MoveOn members and allies participated in 200 #ResistTrumpTuesdays events outside Senate offices nationwide. We're hosting an emergency conference call tonight to organize more peaceful actions at airports and Senate offices this Tuesday. And we'll keep at it for as long as it takes.
  • Distributing posters in highly visible places all across the country with the inclusive message: “Refugees and Immigrants Welcome Here.” More than ten thousand MoveOn members have already downloaded the sign to hang in their homes, businesses, and congregations.
  • Teaming up with our partners at MPower Change—grassroots Muslims and their allies fighting Islamaphobia and anti-Muslim hate—to call on senators to draw a line in the sand against the ban.

But this is only the beginning. Taking on Donald Trump's bigotry in the upcoming months and years will require serious resources.

Will you chip in $3 to help fight Trump's Muslim ban?

Yes, I'll chip in $3.

America was built on the principle of religious freedom. To close our borders and impose a religious test on entry into the country violates our most fundamental freedoms. We refuse to turn our back on what makes America great.

Thanks for all you do.

[Happening now] Airport protests spreading nationwide!

We can stop the Muslim ban.

Dear MoveOn member,

On Friday, Donald Trump tried to block Muslims and refugees from coming to this country. On Saturday, America fought back. And it's massive.

Thousands gathered at JFK airport in New York, demanding the release of refugees and others detained after Trump's orders. They sang, they chanted, they showed up with love and with might. Have a look at the Facebook Live stream from our friends at Working Families Party—it was a sight to behold:

Live Protest at JFK

Then, just hours ago, a federal judge in New York issued a stay on Trump's ban for refugees and visa holders currently stranded at airports.1 That's a huge first step, but it doesn't yet undo the ban. Meanwhile, what started in New York is spreading.

Thousands have gathered at airports in Boston, in San Francisco, in Denver, and in upwards of 34 other cities demanding that America uphold our core values, welcome refugees, and say "no" to any religious test on immigration to this country. Many protests are happening right now. Some will continue throughout the weekend, or even longer.

Check out this volunteer-generated, fast-growing list of airports and community spaces where protests and vigils are happening.

http://act.moveon.org/go/7899?t=3&akid=177156.10220574.SFDlA_

(The site isn't hosted by MoveOn, and these events are being propelled by a range of individuals and groups—this is a moment of massive grassroots movement activity. Please note: details of these events are changing rapidly as individuals and organizations hustle to respond. As you make your plans, please check the site regularly for updates.)

People who've shared stories about the airport protests today have reported big, diverse, and peaceful crowds. In some airports, groups of lawyers have been among the crowd—waiting to speak to refugees and visa holders who've been denied access to counsel. Members of Congress from Representative John Lewis to Senator Elizabeth Warren, local city officials, and other prominent leaders have joined the airport protests in many cities.

If you can join a peaceful protest in your area, you'll help show the Trump Administration, the country, and the world that Americans will resist hate and will resist Islamophobia and will instead unite in the face of injustice.

Some of the protest organizers will have signs to share, but some may not—so feel free to make a sign to hold, or you can print one of MoveOn's signs to bring with you. Just click here.

Some protests are growing so large that vendors at the airports are running out of food and water, so if you're able to join, consider bringing supplies such as bottled water, granola bars, and other nonperishable snacks to share.

These are anguishing times, but the love and the energy on display at airports across the country are our best hope for preserving our American values. Because this is what resistance looks like. We're not done marching.

Thanks for all you do.

Reject Trump's Muslim ban (sign the petition)

Donald Trump just signed an executive order banning immigration from at least seven majority-Muslim countries and freezing our refugee program for at least 120 days.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Donald Trump just signed an executive order banning immigration from at least seven majority-Muslim countries and freezing our refugee program for at least 120 days.1

Will you sign this petition demanding that our elected officials go on the record and resoundingly reject Trump's Muslim ban?

Targeting people based on their religion is wrong and unconstitutional. Shutting the doors on some of the most vulnerable people in the world—refugees seeking safety—shows a moral bankruptcy that is shocking even for Donald Trump. We demand that you go on record and resoundingly reject Trump's Muslim ban.

While the Trump administration has backpedaled on his call for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States"—realizing the weakness of his mandate and the unpopularity of his policies—it's clear that these orders are driven by a deep-seated, almost maniacal anti-Muslim hate that has captured Trump and his Cabinet.

And his call to block Syrian refugees—some of the most vulnerable people in the world—is shockingly morally bankrupt, even for someone like Trump.

We reject targeting of anyone based on their religion or where they come from, and we call on members of Congress to go on the record and reject Trump's Muslim ban.

You're invited this Sunday: "Ready to Resist" emergency call

You're invited this Sunday as we lay out the plan for the next #ResistTrumpTuesdays, January 31, outside members of Congress' district offices.

Dear MoveOn member,

Last Sunday, after the historic Women's Marches, more than 60,000 MoveOn members and allies joined an Emergency Call to move into action. Then on Tuesday, 15,000 people joined more than 200 actions in 43 states to stop Trump's "Swamp Cabinet."

There is amazing energy to take action together—and we need to continue to support each other and come together in the face of the dangerous and unprecedented actions Trump is taking.

Will you join our Emergency Call with the Working Families Party and People's Action this Sunday? We'll plan collective acts of resistance for the coming week. You're invited, whether or not you attended last week's call.

Click here to sign up for this Sunday's #ReadyToResist Emergency Call with MoveOn.

Tuesday's actions all over the country showed that MoveOn members and our friends and neighbors are ready to resist. Here are just some of the images from the "Stop the #SwampCabinet" actions.

Will you join this Sunday's call as we lay out next week's actions to resist Trump?

Yes, I'll join the call this Sunday, January 29 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT/5 p.m. PT!

Thanks for all you do.

Congress: Require Trump to prove no Dakota Access Pipeline conflicts of interest

Trump's team claims he has no conflict of interest with the Dakota Access Pipeline, but their word is not enough.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

President Trump just signed an executive order that could allow work on the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) to proceed—threatening the water of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and 17 million people who live and work along the shore of the Missouri River.1

Trump's team has claimed he has no conflict of interest, but their word is not enough. Will you sign and share this petition urging Congress to require Trump to prove he is not profiting off this executive order?

Require President Trump to provide the audit trail of papers proving he is no longer involved in any way, shape, or form with the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Federal disclosure forms filed in May of 2016 showed that President Donald Trump held shares in Energy Transfer Partners and Phillips 66, both part of the DAPL entity. A Trump spokesperson announced that he had sold off his shares in Energy Transfer Partners, but the Trump team would not say whether he had sold his stake in Phillips 66.2

This presents a clear conflict of interest if he cannot prove he is fully divested of all interest in the pipeline, and was before he signed his executive order.

If the President has truly divested, he should easily be able to prove it and put the claim to rest. If he cannot, he has no business signing executive orders that cause conflicts of interest.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

A personal request (help grow the resistance?)

Each day brings a new wave of gut-wrenching developments. That's why we're committing to going back to Senate offices every Tuesday.

Dear MoveOn member,

On Tuesday, more than 15,000 MoveOn members and allies gathered at 200 events across the country to send a clear message to Democrats and Republicans alike: Stop Trump's #SwampCabinet of bigots and billionaires.

The office building in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey have their offices, had never seen such a big crowd. Senator Cruz's office in Texas called the police to disperse the crowd. And New Yorkers flooded the entire block outside of Senators Chuck Schumer's and Kirsten Gillibrand's office building, with hundreds standing in the driving rain for an hour.

But each day brings a new wave of gut-wrenching developments—an expected ban on refugees and Muslim immigrants, the reopening of CIA "dark sites" that had been used for torture, a push for both the Keystone and Dakota Access pipelines, the authorization of a border wall, gag orders on scientists at federal agencies, attacks on the press.

That's why we're committing to going back to Senate offices next Tuesday and in the weeks and months ahead to let Republicans know they'll be held accountable and put Democrats on notice that they need to stand up and resist.

But 60,000 people joined our emergency call on Sunday night to plan the events, when we had budgeted for 1,000 people—and we weren't going to turn anyone away. Now we have to make up that budget shortfall AND raise money to support this growing movement with more calls, more actions, and more investment. Which is why I'm writing with a personal request:

Can you chip in $3 to help MoveOn build the Trump resistance in the days and weeks ahead?

Yes, I'll chip in to help grow the resistance.

We know that members of Congress hear us. Democrats voted in unison against Rex Tillerson in committee and successfully delayed the confirmation of Jeff Sessions for attorney general. And we're seeing impact on policy as well: Republicans are about to miss their own deadline again for a plan to take health care away from tens of millions of Americans, because pressure from their voters is helping drive deeper the fracture points between them. But we all know this won't be enough.

We need sustained action on an unprecedented scale to stop the Trump Republican agenda, defend frontline communities, rebuild progressive power, and keep our constitutional democracy intact.

Here's some of what that looks like:

  • Participating and holding #ResistTrumpTuesdays, as we did this week and as we'll continue to do in the weeks and months ahead, with our allies at the Working Families Party, People's Action, and other partners.
  • Flooding phone lines of Congress. MoveOn members made more than 15,000 calls to defend health care this week. As was reported in an Arizona paper, MoveOn members actually filled up the voicemails and overwhelmed the offices of both Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake.1
  • Confronting our elected officials at every public event. One Republican congressman literally slipped out of an event early, out a back door, to avoid coming face to face with passionate constituents who were begging him not to take away their health care.2 We have a plan to similarly turn up the heat on key members of Congress in the upcoming February recess.
  • Turning out in force, in D.C. and everywhere, so the media and public know and see the majority will not be silent. We stood shoulder to shoulder with millions during the Women's March last weekend; we stood with Michael Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Cher, and a host of civic and grassroots leaders in New York last week; and we joined with Planned Parenthood to deliver a petition against the corrupt and anti-health care nominee for secretary of Health and Human Services, Tom Price.
  • Cutting through the administration's lies using our own megaphone of social media, breakthrough videos, and community meetings, and by defending the free press that's under attack by this administration.
  • And so much more. We're standing together from within, across, and alongside frontline communities—including  Muslims, immigrants, refugees, and others. And we're defending the principles of our diverse democracy in the face of Trump's attacks.

Last Sunday, more than 60,000 MoveOn members and allies joined an emergency call, and we're hosting another this week, as we prepare for another round of national actions next Tuesday. But all of this takes resources to allow us to escalate our work. Will you chip in $3 today?

Yes, I'll chip in to help resist Trump and the GOP-controlled Congress.

Thanks for all you do.
