Only the beginning

Check out the photos from yesterday's amazing rallies:

Trenton rally

Dear MoveOn member,

Wow. Just wow. Yesterday, 50,000 people took to the streets of every single capital in America to stand with Wisconsin and demand an end to the attacks on workers and to the cuts to vital services. We're done watching the middle class get squeezed while the rich refuse to pay their fair share.

Another 40,000 people followed along online, watching our live broadcasts and liveblog. And all of this was organized, primarily by volunteers, in only 4 days.

The American Dream Movement has arrived, inspired by the bravery of the students, teachers, firefighters and other protesters in Madison, Wisconsin.

They were out again in force yesterday, surrounding the Capitol in the biggest demonstration yet. This minute, those protesters are risking arrest as they peacefully refuse to leave the Capitol, which they've occupied for the last twelve days.

The reports from across the country were amazing—inspiring and energizing. 1,000 people in St. Paul in 5-degree weather. 3,100 in a downpour in Trenton. And in deep red America, 300 people on the steps of the Alabama Capitol, and 400 in Jefferson City, Missouri.

And the world noticed. While cable news gave the protests far less coverage than much smaller tea party events, there was an extraordinary amount of local news coverage—more than we've ever seen. And The New York Times, the Associated Press, CNN, Bloomberg, and The Washington Post all covered the protests. On Twitter, #WeAreWI was one of the top trending topics nationwide.

The photos from across the country are beautiful, and make it clear that people are fired up. That we'll continue to stand with the people of Wisconsin as they continue to fight for their rights. And that yesterday was only the beginning.

Thanks for all you do.

Wisconsin solidarity rally in New York Saturday

Saturday at noon we're coming together to make sure the folks in Wisconsin know that millions of people are standing with them at rallies in cities across the country, including every state capital.

There's a solidarity rally Saturday in New York. Can you make it?

RSVP for your local rally

Dear MoveOn member,

Whatever you've got planned for Saturday afternoon, reschedule it.

Teachers, nurses, firefighters, students, police officers and others protesting in Wisconsin have occupied the Capitol building and streets of Madison for the past nine days.

On Saturday at noon, their protest is going national. In cities across the nation, including every state capital, we'll come together to stand in solidarity with the people of Wisconsin.

This time the Republicans have gone too far in their attempts to bust unions, slash state budgets, and give tax breaks to their wealthy friends.

So on Saturday we'll stand up to say that we're sick of the attacks on workers' rights. That we're sick of an economy that showers corporate executives with bonuses while squeezing middle-class families. That we still believe in the American Dream. And that we're willing to fight for it.

Can you make it to the rally in New York?

Yes, I'll be there.

No, I can't make it.

We're putting everything we've got into one massive display of solidarity nationwide. We'll all show up wearing Wisconsin Badger colors: red and white. And if we can get huge crowds across the nation, it'll send a clear message that progressives are fired up and ready to go.

Until this week, Republicans have dominated the debate over the economy—with Washington arguing about which vital programs to slash, instead of how to create jobs and help the middle class. Now the Republicans are threatening to shut down the government next week in order to force Democrats to agree to devastating cuts to NPR, the EPA, food aid to hungry kids, clean energy research, AmeriCorps and more.

But thanks to the folks braving the cold in Wisconsin, that could all change. This is an opening to call out the Republican game plan for what it is: a brazen effort to use a wrecked economy as an excuse to reward the rich and powerful while destroying 50 years of democratic progress.

That's why we've come together with a huge coalition of progressive organizations—from the Netroots to the labor movement, environmental groups to community organizations—to show our strength and make sure the folks in Wisconsin know that millions of people across the country are standing with them.

Will you join us Saturday in New York so we have a huge crowd? Click here to RSVP:

http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/event.html?rc=rsad_mo&event_id=112811&id=26283-10220574-CDiDiVx&t=5

Fighting back

The Republican attacks on workers are spreading across the country. And in Washington, they're even threatening to shut down the government Can you chip in $5 to a national emergency campaign to fight back?

Contribute

Dear MoveOn member,

It's not just Wisconsin. Republicans are launching similar attacks on workers in other states.1 And in Washington, Republicans are threatening to shut the government down next week unless Democrats agree to massive cuts to everything from NPR to education to food aid for hungry children.2

Inspired by the brave firefighters, students, and teachers who've put themselves on the line in Wisconsin, we're launching a major national emergency campaign to fight back.

We've been scrambling overnight to organize rallies in all 50 states this weekend. We're spinning up ads to expose the true cost of Republican budget cuts—and the tax breaks they're giving to the rich and powerful at the same time.

We're dispatching videographers to help the protesters who've occupied the Wisconsin Capitol get their story out. And offering pizza, air mattresses, and whatever else they need.

It's a lot, but we can do it IF we can raise the funds—about $185,000 today. Republicans have the Koch brothers and other billionaires to bankroll their effort. We have each other. Can you chip in right now?

Until this week, Republicans have dominated the debate over the economy—with Washington arguing about which vital programs to slash, instead of how to create jobs and help the middle class.

But thanks to the folks braving the cold in Wisconsin, that could all change. This is an opening to call out the Republican game plan for what it is: a brazen effort to use a wrecked economy as an excuse to reward the rich and powerful while destroying 50 years of democratic progress.

But to make that happen, progressives around the country need to stand up right away. We have to make sure that the amazing energy in Wisconsin spreads to the rest of the country, so that those who claim we can cut our way to prosperity don't win the day.

This is a huge effort, but it's a huge moment. Can you help make sure this opportunity doesn't slip away—that progressives have the resources we need to win this fight? Click below to chip in:

Emergency Call to Action

We're helping lead an emergency call for rallies in every state capital this Saturday at noon to stand in solidarity with the workers of Wisconsin. Clicking below will add your name to the call for action, then you can help get the word out:

Add your name
Dear MoveOn member,

Moments like these don't come along often.

Newly-elected Tea Party governor Scott Walker thought he could slash the Wisconsin state budget and dismantle 50 years of workers' rights without a fight, but boy was he wrong.

Hundreds of thousands of regular Wisconsinites—teachers, firefighters, police officers, students—have taken to the streets of Madison.  They've occupied the capitol building for the last 7 days and nights.

But this isn't just about Wisconsin. In state capitals across the country, and in Washington, D.C., Republicans are using the wrecked economy as an excuse to slash vital programs and hurt workers. The American Dream itself is under attack.

So we're helping lead an emergency call for rallies in every state capital this Saturday at noon to support folks in Wisconsin and oppose these attacks, wherever they occur.

We have only 4 days to organize, so we're trying something unusual—asking thousands of individuals and local groups to add their names to this call to action. Will you share the call with your personal network—plus get any groups you're part of to sign on? Clicking here will add your name:

We're finalizing the details and we'll get back to you to sign up soon, but we have to start spreading the word right now if Saturday is going to be huge.

Here's the call to action:

50-State Mobilization to Save the American Dream

Calling all students, teachers, union members, workers, patriots, public servants, unemployed folks, progressives, and people of conscience:

In Wisconsin and around our country, the American Dream is under fierce attack. Instead of creating jobs, Republicans are giving tax breaks to corporations and the very rich, and then cutting funding for education, police, emergency response and vital human services. The right to organize is on the chopping block. The American Dream is slipping out of reach for more and more Americans, and we have to fight back.

We call for emergency rallies in front of every statehouse this Saturday at noon to stand in solidarity with the people of Wisconsin. Demand an end to the attacks on workers' rights and public services across the country. Demand investment, to create decent jobs for the millions of people who desperately want to work. And demand that the rich and powerful pay their fair share.

We are all Wisconsin.

We are all Americans.

Add your endorsement and this Saturday we will stand together to save the American Dream.

Clicking below will add your name so you can start spreading the word:

Thanks for all you do.

Daniel, Lenore, Joan, Justin, and the rest of the team

P.S. In addition to allies like PCCC, Color of Change, CREDO Action, Democracy for America, Campaign for Community Change, National People's Action, TrueMajority, US Action, Progressive Majority, and Courage Campaign, green jobs visionary Van Jones has joined this call to action as well.  His inspiring words from The Huffington Post this morning are worth quoting:

"In the past 24 months, those of us who longed for positive change have gone from hope to heartbreak. But hope is returning to America—at last—thanks largely to the courageous stand of the heroes and heroines of Wisconsin.

Reinvigorated by the idealism and fighting spirit on display right now in America's heartland, the movement for "hope and change" has a rare, second chance. It can renew itself and become again a national force with which to be reckoned.

Over the next hours and days, all who love this country need to do everything possible to spread the "spirit of Madison" to all 50 states. This does not mean we need to occupy 50 state capitol buildings; things elsewhere are not yet that dire. But this weekend, the best of America should rally on the steps of every statehouse in the union."

Shocking

Dear MoveOn member,

It might seem hyperbolic to say that Republicans have declared a war on women.

Sadly, it's not.

Just take a look at the top 10 shocking, crazy things Republicans have proposed in recent weeks. If you think this constitutes a war on women, please share this email far and wide—forward it, and post it on Facebook and Twitter.

I wish I could say these were the only examples of the Republican war on women. But it's just a sampling, and more is sure to come—unless we raise a ruckus and call them out. So please, share this email today.

Thanks,

Kat

Top 10 Shocking Attacks from the GOP War on Women

1) Republicans not only want to reduce women's access to abortion care, they're actually trying to redefine rape. After a major backlash, they promised to stop. But they haven't.

2) A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to "accuser." But victims of other less gendered crimes, like burglary, would remain "victims."

3) In South Dakota, Republicans proposed a bill that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. (Yep, for real.)

4) Republicans want to cut nearly a billion dollars of food and other aid to low-income pregnant women, mothers, babies, and kids.

5) In Congress, Republicans have proposed a bill that would let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.

6) Maryland Republicans ended all county money for a low-income kids' preschool program. Why? No need, they said. Women should really be home with the kids, not out working.

7) And at the federal level, Republicans want to cut that same program, Head Start, by $1 billion. That means over 200,000 kids could lose their spots in preschool.

8) Two-thirds of the elderly poor are women, and Republicans are taking aim at them too. A spending bill would cut funding for employment services, meals, and housing for senior citizens.

9) Congress voted yesterday on a Republican amendment to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers, one of the most trusted providers of basic health care and family planning in our country.

10) And if that wasn't enough, Republicans are pushing to eliminate all funds for the only federal family planning program. (For humans. But Republican Dan Burton has a bill to provide contraception for wild horses. You can't make this stuff up).

Please share this email today. Just click the links to post on Facebook and Twitter.

Stand with Wisconsin

Dear MoveOn member,

Madison, Wisconsin, is electric right now.

Tens of thousands of middle-class Americans—teachers, nurses, firefighters—are demonstrating at the capitol today. They're trying to stop the new, tea-party governor from ramming through one of the worst union-busting bills in recent history. He's using the pretext of a budget crisis, but it's one he created by giving tax breaks to business owners.1

Yesterday afternoon, 14 Democratic state senators walked out of the chamber in defiance to stop the vote on the bill. They're in Illinois now, speaking to the press from undisclosed locations to evade capture.2

Today protesters from all over Wisconsin are holding the biggest rally yet, with tens of thousands of people expected to come. But the national media is not giving the story the coverage it deserves, and without more attention, the Republicans may push the bill through.

We need to show that millions of Americans are standing with the protesters and help draw the nation's eyes to Madison today. Can you take a moment right now to change your Facebook status to this:

"Today I stand with the teachers, nurses, and all public employees of Wisconsin who are fighting for their rights. If you do too, change this to your status for the rest of the day."

Click here to go to your Facebook profile and change your status.

For Wisconsin's schools and kids, the stakes today couldn't be higher. Kim Hoffman, a middle school music teacher, spoke for hundreds of great teachers across the state when she said: "I love teaching, but [if these cuts go through] I'd have to start looking for another job, period."3

Gov. Walker's budget represents one of the boldest assaults on workers and the middle class in memory, and it comes at the worst possible time for Wisconsin's weakened middle class.

Today is the critical moment. With the bill temporarily stalled after Democratic Senators fled the state to deny the Republicans the ability to vote on the bill, there is a chance to kill the bill for good.4 Organizers expect their largest crowd yet, but they need to know that we have their back.

Can you help draw national attention to Wisconsin by changing your status on Facebook for the rest of the day?

Click here to go to your Facebook profile and change your status.

Thanks for all you do.

Can you host a speak-out in Far Rockaway?

Republicans are proposing a federal budget that would slash 1 million jobs from our economy—in addition to cutting programs that protect families hardest hit by the recession. That's why we're organizing speak-outs across the country. Can you host an Invest in America speak-out in Far Rockaway next Thursday?

Sign up to host

Dear MoveOn member,

"So be it."

This was Speaker of the House John Boehner's heartless response to a new report showing that the Republican budget proposal would cost our country 1 million jobs.1

His response was a slap in the face to the workers who would lose their jobs, and this reckless proposal could send us into an even deeper recession.

We have to speak out against the Republicans' job-killing, economy-ruining budget proposal.

That's why we're organizing Invest in America speak-outs next Thursday, February 24. We must tell Congress: We need a budget that invests in our communities—not a budget that cuts jobs and vital programs like low-income heating assistance and food assistance for pregnant women and their children.

But there isn't an event yet in your area. Can you host an event at Rep. Meeks's office in Far Rockaway?

Yes! I'll host an Invest in America speak-out.

We need to act now, before the Republican plan gets any traction in Congress. By hosting an event at Rep. Meeks's office in Far Rockaway, you're giving others in your community a chance to speak out against the Republicans' job-killing proposal. Hosting a speak-out is simple, and you'll have a step-by-step guide, sample materials, and a national host prep call to assist you.

Can you organize a speak-out in Far Rockaway?

Yes! I'll host an Invest in America speak-out.

Thanks for all you do.

URGENT: Planned Parenthood under attack

Congress could vote as soon as today to cut all federal funds from Planned Parenthood health centers. Can you call Rep. McCarthy right away and urge her to vote "no"?

Representative Carolyn McCarthy
Phone: 202-225-5516

Report your call
Dear MoveOn member,

The House of Representatives could vote TODAY to strip all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers.1

If this happens, the consequences will be devastating. Planned Parenthood serves 5 million people annually—in fact, one in five American women will visit Planned Parenthood in her lifetime. And six in 10 patients who receive care at a women's health center like Planned Parenthood consider it their primary source of health care.2

This isn't funding for abortions—it's to give women access to basic health care. Funding for cancer screenings, HIV testing, birth control, and more is in danger of being cut.3

Every member of Congress needs to hear from voters who support Planned Parenthood right away—can you call Rep. McCarthy today? Tell her to vote "no" on the amendment to strip Planned Parenthood's funding.

Progressives in Congress are fighting back. Representative Barbara Lee, among a group of Democrats leading the charge against Republican efforts to cut family planning funding, said "This is a war on women. They're trying to inject their politics and their religion into local family planning."4

But facing a concerted right-wing attack, Planned Parenthood is in real danger—and we need to speak out, now. Can you call Rep. McCarthy right away? Here's where to call:

A powerful new ad

Republicans are pushing a radical agenda this year that would hurt millions of women. So we teamed up with "House" star Lisa Edelstein to make a powerful new ad that sounds the alarm. Can you donate $5 to help us get it on the air?

Dear MoveOn member,

Today, we're releasing a powerful new ad. "We Won't Go Back," with Lisa Edelstein, star of the hit TV show "House," is a hard-hitting portrayal of where the Republican war on women's health will lead if it's not stopped.

From a bill attempting to redefine rape to gutting access to reproductive health care, Republicans have made anti-woman and anti-choice legislation a top priority this year.1

The new ad calls out the Republican efforts for what they are: an attempt to send women back to the back alley. But far too few people even know about their efforts. So to stop them, we've got to get this ad out far and wide, and make sure voters see just what Republicans are trying to do.

To get the ad on the air on national television, we need to raise $160,000. Can you chip in $5 today? Just click here to see the ad and donate:

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/backalleyad.html?bg_id=hpc5&id=26124-10220574-3maoRKx&t=4

Women's rights leaders have warned that the Republican effort would be a radical, far-reaching rollback of women's rights. Rep. Carolyn Maloney called it "the deepest attack on a woman's right to choose in my lifetime."2 Expert Jessica Arons said it would "accomplish the unstated end of making abortion as difficult to obtain as possible without actually criminalizing it."3

One bill would effectively prevent women from purchasing insurance that includes abortion coverage in the new insurance exchanges even if they're using their own money. Experts warn this type of restriction could lead to insurance companies dropping abortion coverage entirely.4 The same bill would also levy a tax on small businesses and individuals who purchase insurance coverage that includes abortion.5

Another bill would, incredibly, allow hospitals to turn away a woman seeking an abortion, even if she'll die without it—a major change from current law.6

Republicans have a real chance of passing these bills—unless we sound the alarm right away. Can you help us get this new ad on the air? Just click here to donate and watch the new ad:

Ask Rep. McCarthy to save NPR and PBS

We need to stop the Republican attack on public broadcasting. Can you call Rep. McCarthy and ask her to add her name to the letter opposing the drastic budget cuts for PBS and NPR?

Representative Carolyn McCarthy
Phone: 202-225-5516

Report your call

Dear MoveOn member,

Our petition to save NPR and PBS has taken off! More than 400,000 people have signed since Friday.

But far from backing off, Republicans are doubling down. They released a new version of their budget Friday that not only zeroes out federal funding for NPR and PBS going forward, but even claws back funding for this year that's already been promised.1

A group of House Democrats is fighting back with a "Dear Colleague" letter, and they're trying to get as many representatives as possible to sign on by the time they deliver it to the House leadership tomorrow. Can you call Rep. McCarthy now and ask her to add her name?

Tell her why NPR and PBS are so important to you, personally, and then ask her to sign the "Dear Colleague" letter being circulated by Rep. Earl Blumenauer's office protesting the cuts.

And if you haven't already, please send the petition on to your friends and family.  We're trying to get a half-million signatures before we deliver the petitions tomorrow.

Here's some text you can forward:

The Republicans just released their budget proposal, and it zeroes out funding for both NPR and PBS—the worst proposal in more than a decade. We need to tell Republicans that cutting off funding was unacceptable last time they were in charge, and it's unacceptable now.

I just signed the petition to save NPR and PBS. Can you join me at the link below?

Thanks for all you do.

RE: Save NPR and PBS

Dear MoveOn member,

Amazing! Since yesterday, more than 290,000 people have signed our petition telling Republicans to keep their hands off of federal funding for PBS and NPR.

We're aiming to deliver a half-million signatures to Congress next week, to make clear that public broadcasting serves a huge number of Americans and cutting its funding is simply unacceptable.

Can you help us reach our goal by sharing the petition on Facebook this weekend?

Thanks for all you do.

P.S. You can also just forward the email below asking people to sign:

Save NPR and PBS

"Congress must protect NPR and PBS and guarantee them permanent funding, free from political meddling."

Sign the petition
Dear MoveOn member,

I guess we shouldn't be surprised.

With Republicans back in charge of the House of Representatives, funding for NPR and PBS is in grave danger. Again.

The Republicans just released their budget proposal, and it zeroes out funding for both NPR and PBS—the worst proposal in more than a decade.1

They probably think that no one will notice these cuts in the midst of so many others. But the millions of listeners and viewers who rely on public broadcasting for "Sesame Street," "All Things Considered," and independent journalism will notice.

We need to tell Republicans that cutting off funding was unacceptable last time they were in charge, and it's unacceptable now.

Add your name to the petition to save NPR and PBS:

The petition says: "Congress must protect NPR and PBS and guarantee them permanent funding, free from political meddling."

Thanks for all you do.

Back to the back alley?

"Stop the GOP war on women's health. Please oppose the bills that would restrict abortion coverage and erode a woman's right to choose."

Sign the petition

Dear MoveOn member,

Big news: Thanks in part to you and the 581,053 others who signed the "Redefining Rape?" petition, the Republicans are back-pedaling from their attempt to redefine rape.1 Your support made a real difference.

But this legislation is still terrible for women. Rep. Carolyn Maloney called it "the deepest attack on a woman's right to choose in my lifetime."2 Expert Jessica Arons said it would "accomplish the unstated end of making abortion as difficult to obtain as possible without actually criminalizing it."3

Among other things, the bill would effectively prevent women from using their own money to purchase insurance that includes abortion coverage in the new insurance exchanges. Experts warn this could lead to insurance companies dropping abortion coverage entirely.4

And it's only one part of the Republicans' attack on women's health. A second bill would allow hospitals to let a pregnant woman die rather than perform the abortion that would save her life.5

It's reprehensible. We can't let the GOP force women back into the back alley. You stood up against the disgusting "forcible rape" provision—now can you stand together to tell Congress to oppose these attacks on women's right to choose by signing the petition below?

http://pol.moveon.org/wontgoback/?id=26019-10220574-HiJigzx&t=3

The petition says: "Stop the GOP war on women's health. Please oppose the bills that would restrict abortion coverage and erode a woman's right to choose."

On Tuesday, local MoveOn members in "We Won't Go Back to the Back Alley" T-shirts will deliver your petitions during a hearing on Capitol Hill. Anti-choice activists are sure to be out in full force at the hearing, so we need a huge stack of names to show Congress and the news media that voters won't stand for this attack.

These GOP bills are a full-throated attack on women's reproductive freedoms. Their legislation would:6

  • Effectively ban abortion coverage in the new health insurance exchanges even if people pay for coverage with their own money.
  • Impose tax penalties on small businesses that pay for health plans that cover abortion and people who pay for abortion care.
  • Force the District of Columbia to impose all of the above laws, instead of letting the city decide its own laws.
  • Permanently ban abortion care for women insured by the government.
And a recently added provision is perhaps the most disgusting: allowing hospitals to deny a woman a life-saving abortion. If this bill passes, hospitals will be allowed to turn away a woman seeking an abortion, even if she'll die without it—a major change from current law.7

Will you sign the petition today and stand up for a woman's right to choose?

Don't let the GOP send us back to the back alley. Sign the petition and share with your friends today:
