Russ Feingold's in trouble

The latest polls show that Sen. Russ Feingold is in serious danger of losing in November—and we simply can't afford to let that happen. We're aiming to raise $300,000 for his campaign before tomorrow's fundraising deadline. Can you chip in $5?

Dear MoveOn member,

Red alert: The latest polls show that Senator Russ Feingold could lose in November. They all have him down by at least 6 points against a tea party Republican who actually thinks climate change is caused by sunspots.1

There's no better, more principled Democrat in Washington than Sen. Feingold: The only senator to vote against the Patriot Act. A steadfast opponent of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And a passionate crusader against corporate influence in politics.

But since those very corporate interests have already spent $650,000 trying to defeat him, he's now facing the fight of his political life.2 Because keeping Sen. Feingold's voice in the Senate is so important, this race has become our top national priority.

Sen. Feingold's campaign is up against a critical fundraising deadline that expires tomorrow. Right now he urgently needs the resources to expand his grassroots campaign, reach out to more voters and get his message out in Wisconsin. We're aiming to raise $300,000 for Sen. Feingold's campaign before the deadline. Can you chip in $5?

https://pol.moveon.org/give/heroes1.html?aa=5&id=23742-10220574-JAwYVxx&t=3

Tomorrow's critical fundaising deadline will send a message to the pundits and election watchers. If progressive champs like Sen. Feingold show a surge of grassroots support, it will signal that progressives who stand up against corporate lobbyists and right-wing extremism can win big this year.

And Sen. Feingold isn't the only progressive hero who is facing a tough battle right now.

Rep. Alan Grayson is in a really close race against right-wing Republican Dan Webster. Grayson has been an outspoken and bold advocate on issue after issue—from reining in Wall Street to health care reform—and he is running a tight race against an anti-choice Republican who even thinks divorce should be illegal in some cases.3

And polls are just as tight for progressive hero Tom Perriello. Rep. Perriello's opponent is campaigning to repeal health care reform and make the Bush tax cuts for the rich permanent.4

If these champs can get enough resources by the deadline, they can get their message on the air, recruit more volunteers, reach out to more voters, and go into the final stretch of this election with a strong hand.

Can you chip in $5 to support Sen. Feingold and other key progressive heroes in tight races before the deadline?

https://pol.moveon.org/give/heroes1.html?aa=5&id=23742-10220574-JAwYVxx&t=4

Thanks for all you do.

Progressives from around the country are marching in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 2nd at the "One Nation" rally. Can you join us?

Click to RSVP

Dear MoveOn member,

On October 2nd, exactly one month before Election Day, hundreds of thousands of people are gathering in Washington, D.C. for "One Nation," a huge march for jobs, equality, and progress. Can you join us?

At the historic Lincoln Memorial, progressives from coast to coast will join human and civil rights leaders, labor leaders, faith leaders, celebrities and more to rally for bold action to protect our economy and jobs—and to move our country forward.

With Republicans and their corporate allies determined to take back Congress in November, we'll join together to show the strength and unity of the progressive movement.

Rides are available on buses and in carpools from all over the East Coast, but they're filling up fast—so RSVP soon!

Can you join us in D.C. on October 2nd?

Yes, tell me more and sign me up

Sorry, I can't make it

We're joining dozens of progressive organizations involved in One Nation, including the NAACP, USAction, Win Without War, the Service Employees International Union, and so many more. And in addition to joining the march, MoveOn members are holding "Stop the Takeover" house parties nationwide that weekend, mobilizing get-out-the-vote volunteers in critical congressional races.

The One Nation march will demonstrate that progressives are united to fight—to fight for Congress, and for good jobs, true economic progress, social justice, and equality for all. And it'll also be a lot of fun, gathering with progressives from all over the country on the historic National Mall.

We've got 38 days until the election—can you join us in Washington, D.C. for the "One Nation" march?

Inwood party to stop the takeover?

Republicans and their corporate allies are hell-bent on taking over Congress—so we're organizing Stop the Takeover call parties during the One Nation weekend of action. We'll call MoveOn members in key districts and ask them to get out the vote. Can you host a party in Inwood on Oct. 2nd or 3rd?

Dear MoveOn member,

In 2008, we did something really tremendous together: More than one million MoveOn members volunteered to help propel then-candidate Obama into office.

Two years later, the Supreme Court's Citizens United case has broken open the floodgates of corporate cash in elections. Tea party activists are mobilizing. And the New York Times' Nate Silver says Republicans have a 63% chance of taking over the House.1

We need to kick into high gear again like we did in 2008—or all the progress we've made could be brought to a grinding halt.

So on October 2nd and 3rd—during the big One Nation weekend of progressive activity—we're organizing a huge wave of Stop the Takeover house parties to save our heroes and defend Congress. At hundreds of gatherings around the country, we'll make calls to other MoveOn members in order to find get-out-the-vote volunteers in key congressional districts.

We still need a place for folks to gather in Inwood—can you host a party? It's really simple, and we'll give you everything you need. Click here if you can help out:

http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/create.html?action_id=222&id=23642-10220574-3eMMghx&t=3

These parties are one of the most popular things we do together. Last election, more than 56,000 MoveOn members participated in a call party. We recruited more volunteers from call parties than from any other source.

And they're very simple. You choose a time on October 2nd or 3rd when you can open up your house for the party. (You can also borrow a friend's house—or reserve a free public space like a library community room—if your home isn't a good location for people to gather.) We'll help invite other MoveOn members, and they'll all bring their cell phones.

We'll also provide all the materials for you to call MoveOn members who live in areas with key elections happening—to help candidates like Senators Russ Feingold and Barbara Boxer, Representatives Alan Grayson and Tom Perriello, and other less high-profile but incredibly important races that'll decide control of Congress.

We also suggest making it a dessert potluck, so you get to enjoy some treats in addition to your important work! Last election, a lot of folks said that meeting other local progressives was an incredibly rewarding part of hosting.

We need a place for people to get together in Inwood so that other local folks can be part of this campaign. Can you host a party? Click here:

Can you fulfill your pledge?

The latest polls are truly frightening: Many of our top Progressive Heroes are in danger, and Republicans are poised to take over the House. It's not too late to turn this election around—but we need to fully fund our Stop the Takeover campaign. To do that, we're counting on your $75 pledge. Can you make a donation today?

Dear MoveOn member,

Earlier this month, you were one of over 20,000 MoveOn members who pledged to chip in the $1.1 million we need for our big plan to stop the Republicans and their corporate allies from taking over Congress.

Since then, the polls have gotten even scarier.

In Wisconsin, Sen. Russ Feingold is trailing by at least 6 points.1 In Nevada, Majority Leader Harry Reid is tied with tea-party extremist Sharron Angle.2 Nationwide, Republicans have a 63% chance of taking over the House and unseating Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to New York Times analyst Nate Silver.3

It's not too late to turn this election around, but grassroots progressives need to step up to the plate and fight as hard as we did in 2008. And that means we need to fully fund our campaign immediately—and even expand it if we can.

Since every dollar counts, we're counting on you to fulfill your pledge of $75. Can you make a donation today?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/2010pledge.html?bg_id=hpc5&id=23623-10220574-7in2Mux&t=3

We've already run ads pushing back against corporate smear campaigns, and this week we're sending the first wave of MoveOn volunteers into key campaign offices to help get out the vote.

With additional resources, we'll be able to expand on the key pieces of our campaign:

  • We're firing up the recruitment engine we used to turn out hundreds of thousands of volunteers for the Obama campaign in 2008. In the next six weeks, we're planning to make 500,000 calls to build a grassroots army and get out the vote.
  • Our team of expert field organizers and specially trained volunteer leaders are working around the clock to expose the corporate money behind Republican candidates in key congressional districts.
  • And every time the right wing tries to smear Democrats who voted for the health care bill, we're pushing back with hard-hitting ads and grassroots media campaigns

We're counting on you to fulfill your pledge of $75. Can you make a donation today?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/2010pledge.html?bg_id=hpc5&id=23623-10220574-7in2Mux&t=4

Thanks for all you do.

Stop the Takeover: Host a call party in Inwood?

Far-right candidates, backed by corporate cash, are close to winning Congress. That's why we're organizing "Stop the Takeover" call parties on October 2nd and 3rd to recruit election volunteers—as part of the huge "One Nation" weekend of action. Can you host a party in Inwood?

Dear MoveOn member,

It's a terrifying combination: Tea party extremism and unprecedented amounts of corporate cash.

The far-right wing of the Republican Party is threatening to take control of Congress—and unseat some of our leading progressive heroes along the way.

We simply can't afford to stand by and let this takeover happen. The Republicans may have hundreds of millions in corporate campaign cash, but we can still beat them if we recruit enough grassroots progressives to help get out the vote and turn the tide on Election Day.

So we're launching "Stop the Takeover" call parties on October 2nd and 3rd, as part of the huge "One Nation" mobilization happening across the country. While some of us are marching in Washington, D.C, thousands of us will get together locally to call other MoveOn members in key congressional districts to find badly needed volunteers for crucial get-out-the-vote efforts.

We need a place for folks to gather in Inwood. It's easy to host a call party, and we'll give you everything you need—can you help out? Click here:

http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/create.html?action_id=222&id=23584-10220574-jfaq9Fx&t=3

Hosting is simple and straightforward—but the calls and community-building at these parties make a real difference. Last election, over 56,000 individual MoveOn members came to call parties that helped win it for Obama, and folks overwhelmingly reported that the calls to other MoveOn members were powerful, fun, and gratifying.

This time, we're planning to make over 500,000 calls to help recruit volunteers for candidates in tight races—including progressive heroes like Barbara Boxer, Russ Feingold, Alan Grayson, Tom Perriello, and more. By calling fellow MoveOn members in these key campaign areas, we'll help make sure our candidates have the grassroots army they'll need to get out the vote.

And this particular weekend is really special. On October 2nd, hundreds of thousands of progressives will gather in Washington, D.C. for the massive "One Nation" rally—calling for bold action to create jobs and get America moving again. On the same weekend, thousands more of us will take action locally, including these Stop the Takeover call parties.

As a party host, you'll be enabling other folks in Inwood to get involved in the campaign. Here's what to expect:

  • You'll invite friends and family—and we'll invite nearby MoveOn members, if you'd like, to help fill up your party.
  • We'll ask everyone to bring their cell phone and a delicious dessert to share. (Saving democracy can be tasty, too.)
  • We'll provide step-by-step materials to walk you through the event, including scripts and lists of names and numbers. We'll even have live volunteer support in case you have any questions during the party.

It's simple, but hosting is a huge service to other progressives in your area. Can you host a party on October 2nd or 3rd in Inwood? Click here to get started:

HUGE News!

Huge news: Obama appoints populist hero Elizabeth Warren to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau! Check out clips of Warren on the "Daily Show":

Dear MoveOn member,

HUGE news: President Obama just appointed populist hero Elizabeth Warren to establish and lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau!!

This is the boldest step Obama's taken so far to rein in the big Wall Street banks. And it's a major victory for grassroots progressives who rallied for Warren.

The banks fought to keep her out of this job—and now that she has it, they'll do whatever they can to keep her from exercising her full authority. That's why we need to get the word out—to make sure she has the grassroots support she needs to aggressively police Wall Street.

So we made a video of Warren's greatest hits from her appearances on the "Daily Show" and a list of five cool facts about her. Check them out at the link below and send them to all your friends:

http://pol.moveon.org/warren_fivethings_share.html?id=23504-10220574-H.2H3hx&t=2

Top Five Things You Should Know About Elizabeth Warren

1. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was her idea.  Here's why she thinks this agency is so critical: "It is impossible to buy a toaster that has a one-in-five chance of bursting into flames and burning down your house. But it is possible to refinance your home with a mortgage that has the same one-in-five chance of putting your family out on the street."1

2. The Republicans are so scared of her, they tried to pass a law blocking her from leading the agency. Republicans in Congress and the big Wall Street banks have always been against Warren leading the new consumer agency. Republicans even offered an amendment that was widely understood as designed to block Warren. That amendment failed.2

3. She is one of the most prominent, successful and fierce female lawyers in America. Coming from working-class roots, she graduated from high school as a debate star at 16. She finished law school when she was nine months pregnant. And she has repeatedly been named one of the 50 most influential female lawyers by the National Law Journal and was twice nominated as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People (among other honors).3

4. She spoke truth to power about the failed foreclosure program. The Home Affordability Modification Program was supposed to save homeowners from losing their homes but has left many deeper in debt than they were before. Warren used her position on the Congressional Oversight Panel to bring the voices of these disaffected homeowners right to the decision makers in the administration and demand accountability. 4

5. She may have actual superpowers. She once calmed a crowd at an NBA game with her encyclopedic basketball knowledge. She explained the financial meltdown so clearly to Jon Stewart that he said it made him "want to make out with" her. And there's a viral cowboy rap video about her.5

Check out the video of Warren on the "Daily Show" and share it with your friends and family. Just click here:

Party in Brooklyn: six weeks to win!

We've got six weeks to stop Republicans and corporate funders from taking over Congress. To get started, we're gathering at "Six Weeks to Win" house parties on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

There's a party in Brooklyn. Can you make it?

Dear MoveOn member,

The sky isn't falling—yet.

Yes, corporate special interests are expected to dump $400 million into local races to buy back Congress for Republicans—and yes, the polls aren't looking great.1 But the polls were looking just as bad for us around this time in 2008.2 That fall, we rolled up our sleeves and helped propel President Obama to victory.

This Tuesday, we're getting together at parties to build the same election program that helped turn the tide two years ago. These gatherings will launch the "Stop the Takeover" program—our bold plan to help re-elect progressive heroes and prevent Republicans and their corporate allies from taking control of Congress.

There's a party near you in Brooklyn on Tuesday. Can you make it?

We have just over six weeks to mobilize thousands of volunteers to support our progressive heroes and expose the corporate lobbyists who are teaming up with Republicans to buy this election.
It's going to take all of us to defend Congress from a corporate and Republican takeover

The parties are a fun and social way to help launch this campaign—and they're the crucial first step to provide a boost to progressive heroes like Rep. Alan Grayson and Sen. Barbara Boxer. Many of the races that will actually determine whether Republicans and their corporate allies regain control of Congress are still neck and neck—and MoveOn members' energy and passion can tilt these contests our way.

We need an all-hands-on-deck effort to win. Click here to come to a party on Tuesday:

Election season is here—and the excitement starts on Tuesday. Hope you'll be there.

Thanks for all you do.

A big update--and a big decision

***OFFICIAL BALLOT***

Which candidate should MoveOn endorse in the U.S. Senate race in New York between Kirsten Gillibrand and Joe DioGuardi? Cast your vote today.

Dear MoveOn member,

All summer long we've run a massive campaign to convince candidates to stand up against the corporate stranglehold on our democracy and fight for the Other 98% of us. Thanks to the incredible work of MoveOn members, that campaign has blown away this summer's goals.

In fact, more than 200 candidates and members of Congress, along with 500,000 individuals, have endorsed the Fight Washington Corruption pledge—our three-part blueprint to reverse the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, enact publicly-financed elections, and reduce the influence of lobbyists in Washington. Among the candidates where you live, only Kirsten Gillibrand supported the Fight Washington Corruption pledge campaign. Joe DioGuardi did not.

Thanks in part to our work together, corporate lobbying and influence have become increasingly important themes in the election. Just last week, for example, The New York Times ran a front-page profile of Republican leader John Boehner focused on his links to corporate lobbyists.1 And candidates like Paul Hodes in New Hampshire have come out with new plans to shut the revolving door between government and lobbying.2

Meanwhile, though, the problem is only getting worse. In the wake of Citizens United, corporate interests are spending an astounding $400 million to buy the election for Republicans.3 Which is why our focus between now and November needs to be on supporting the candidates who've stood up against corporate influence and beating back the hostile corporate takeover of Congress!

Throughout this campaign, MoveOn members have told candidates that support for the pledge would be a factor in MoveOn's endorsements this fall. But in the end, endorsement decisions are made by a vote of MoveOn members in the state or district, taking into account all the information about the race.

So today, we need your help making an important decision: which candidate should MoveOn endorse in the U.S. Senate race in New York between Kirsten Gillibrand and Joe DioGuardi? Please take a moment to vote now on MoveOn's endorsement in your area:

http://pol.moveon.org/2010/e/exampleballot.html?id=23453-10220574-dEc9k6x&t=2

Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. tomorrow night. This ballot email is not transferable. If you want to encourage your friends who are MoveOn members to vote, encourage them to look for their personal MoveOn ballot email. You must be a resident of New York and a MoveOn member prior to today to participate in the online endorsement vote.

In races with two candidates, a two-thirds majority is needed to win our endorsement. In races with more than two candidates, the one who receives a majority of votes cast will win the endorsement. If no candidate meets our threshold, we won't endorse a candidate.

The campaign around the Fight Washington Corruption pledge has shown how much of a difference we can all make when we work together. Now we need to turn that same energy to winning this election! That starts with choosing which candidates we will support on November 2nd—and to make the best decisions possible, we need your input. Progressive heroes in danger

Some of our best champions who've led the fight for real change in Washington are under attack and could lose in this election: Barbara Boxer, Russ Feingold, Alan Grayson, and Tom Perriello. We absolutely have to save them, and we're going to throw everything we've got at these races. Can you chip in $5 to help out?

Contribute now

Dear MoveOn member,

If there's anything we've learned since President Obama took office, it's that not all Democrats are created equal.

While too many Democrats have sided with corporate lobbyists to block the president's agenda, other progressives have stood strong and led the fight for real change in Washington.

Now, some of our best progressive heroes are at risk of losing their seats—people like Barbara Boxer, Russ Feingold, Alan Grayson, and Tom Perriello. And no matter what else happens this election, we can't afford to lose their voices in Congress.

So as part of our big plan to stop the takeover, we'll focus special attention on saving our Progressive Heroes. We'll expose the corporate money behind their right-wing opponents, run carefully targeted ads, and turn out every last volunteer to help get out the vote.

That's a tall order, but we can win these races if we devote enough resources to them. So we need at least 3 more people from Inwood to donate today. Can you chip in $5?

Our list of Progressive Heroes includes the two candidates—Sen. Boxer and Rep. Grayson—who received the most nominations from MoveOn members in our survey, as well as two other progressives in key races. Each is a bold champion who supported our Fight Washington Corruption pledge campaign and each is in a truly close race where MoveOn members' involvement could make the difference. Here's what MoveOn members had to say about them:

  • Sen. Barbara Boxer in California: "A proven progressive fighter, unafraid to take on corporations (or anyone or anything else)—and her opponent is a right-wing extremist who would be destructive to every progressive policy Boxer champions."1
  • Sen. Russ Feingold in Wisconsin: "The strongest, most longstanding voice of progressivism in the Senate. If we lose his seat, our caucus becomes much weaker without his bravery and willingness to do what's right regardless of whether it's popular."2
  • Rep. Alan Grayson in Florida: "The bravest person in Congress. I wish others had his vision and backbone." And: "He is not afraid and says what we wish ALL Democrats would say."3
  • Rep. Tom Perriello in Virginia: "A bold voice for progressive causes in a district formerly represented by a far right-winger."4

But to ramp up our efforts to defend these heroes who've stood with us, we need to raise an additional $170,000 for our Stop the Takeover campaign today. Click here to chip in:

P.S. Here's some great news: Last night in New Hampshire, MoveOn-endorsed Ann McLane Kuster won big over a corporate Democrat in the congressional primary. We'll keep fighting to elect her in November.

Lobbyists heart Boehner

Dear MoveOn member,

It's true. Right now, Republicans have a good shot at winning Congress. And yesterday, the New York Times published a must-read article about John Boehner, the man who'll be Speaker of the House if they do. The gist: Boehner's passion is representing the scores of corporate lobbyists who are his best friends.

It shocked even us—but then we remembered that Boehner started his career in Congress handing tobacco lobby checks out to other Republicans to keep his "friends" from having to make the trip to the Hill themselves.

Take a look at the article and please share it, so folks know exactly who'll be in charge if the Democrats lose this fall.

Stop the takeover

Republicans and their corporate allies are determined to take over Congress this fall—and we can't let that happen. The good news is that we've received enough pledges and donations to get started on our plan to the turn the tide. Can you make a donation today and help us get started?

Dear MoveOn member,

It's a perfect storm.

Polls show record levels of voter anger at Washington. Corporate interests are spending $400 million to try and buy Congress for the Republican Party.1 And Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are whipping up a frenzy of right-wing hatred and coded racism.

In short, we're on the verge of losing this election. And if that happens, right-wing Republicans and their corporate benefactors will do everything they can to kill any progressive legislation for the rest of the Obama presidency.

So last week, we announced our ambitious strategy for turning the tide, including a massive recruitment drive to turn out thousands of volunteers for vulnerable Democrats. MoveOn members like you pledged or donated more than $1.3 million and 100,000 hours—and now it's time to get started.

Thank you for your willingness to step forward with a pledge—knowing we can count on your support makes it possible for us to invest the resources necessary to run an effective, cutting-edge campaign. Now that we've kicked it off, can you make a donation today to help out?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/election2010.html?bg_id=hpc5&id=23373-10220574-D.FU08x&t=3

The last couple of years haven't been a cakewalk—we've all been plenty frustrated with Democrats in Washington. But we simply can't afford to go back to the days of a Congress controlled by Republicans and their corporate allies.

Here's the plan we outlined last week:

  • Build an army of progressive volunteers to get out the vote: We'll spin up the massively successful campaign that brought in a million volunteers for Barack Obama in 2008 and improve it to recruit volunteers in dozens of districts across the country.
  • Expose the corporate cash behind Republicans: We'll use the unprecedented and highly visible flood of corporate cash that's pouring into the election to remind voters again and again that Republicans are backed by the same big corporations that drove our economy off a cliff and fought tooth and nail against health care reform.
  • Go all out for progressive heroes: We'll hit the phones, do rapid-response media outreach, and raise much-needed cash for progressive leaders facing tough re-election fights, like Alan Grayson and Barbara Boxer.

It's an ambitious plan—but it can work if all of us pitch in. Can you make a donation today?

Obama's Back!

Obama is back! He just took a tough stand saying that Congress must let Bush's infamous tax cuts for millionaires expire. But some Democrats are wavering.  That's why we need to show them that voters want Democrats to stand with Obama on this. Can you sign the petition?

Dear MoveOn member,

Remember what it felt like to watch Barack Obama back when he was Candidate Obama? Seeing him fired up and ready to go in front of a crowd of 20,000?

Well, as of this week, that Obama's back. On Wednesday, he gave a feisty, tough speech that showed just how irresponsible Republicans have been, how crazy it'd be to give them back control of Congress this fall, and what he proposes to do to get our economy back on track.

The strongest stand he took was making sure that Congress lets Bush's infamous tax cuts for millionaires expire—while preserving tax cuts for the rest of us.1 Republicans hate the idea of taxing their super-rich friends. And some corporate Democrats might side with the Republicans and the corporations instead of regular people.

That's why we need to show Democrats in Congress that voters want them to stand tall and stand with Obama on this. Can you sign this petition so we can deliver it Democrats in Congress right away?

http://pol.moveon.org/bushtaxcuts/?id=23320-10220574-0nSgtCx&t=4

The petition says: "Stand with President Obama: Don't let Republicans hold middle class tax cuts hostage."

The Bush tax cuts for the super rich aren't just bad policy, they are bad politics too. Voters consistently reject extending those giveaways in poll and after poll.2

And economists agree that the top 2%—the richest folks who the Republicans are going to bat for—don't spend this money, meaning this tax giveaway doesn't have any stimulative affect on the economy.3

But struggling families will spend it. They need relief now and that will help our economy.

With Republicans committed to bailing out their rich, corporate friends to the tune of $700 billion at the expense of middle class families, it is essential that Democrats stand up and do the right thing.

Can you sign the petition today?

Thanks for all you do.
