Family torn apart by ICE needs your help (sign the petition)

Sign the petition to show your support for Bakhodir Madjitov, and tell ICMadjitov

Dear fellow MoveOn Member,

Bakhodir Madjitov, a father of three young boys, is scheduled to be deported after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided his home without a warrant. He has lived in the United States for 13 years.

Tell ICE and Connecticut representatives: Stop the deportation of Bakhodir Madjitov.

Bakhodir was taken into custody by ICE on December 22, 2017. He's been in custody for more than 700 days without being charged with a crime.

Bakhodir's wife Madina was 39 weeks pregnant with a complicated pregnancy when ICE entered their home, and their third child was born a week after ICE detained his father. Bakhodir's children and wife are suffering, and we're concerned that he may be deported soon.

Prior to being detained, Bakhodir supported his family as a home health aide working with a government-issued ID.

In the last two years, ICE has moved Bakhodir around the country to detention centers in Massachusetts, Alabama, New Jersey, and Louisiana.

Madina and her lawyers are concerned that ICE might be planning to deport Bakhodir by the end of the year, even though he has an active appellate case pending.

Connecticut values families. We want Madina, Bakhodir, and the boys to stay together in the United States.

Join us in telling ICE and Connecticut representatives that Bakhodir should be home with his wife and sons!

Click here to add your name to this petition. Join us in telling ICE and Connecticut representatives: We want Madina, Bakhodir, and the boys to stay together in the United States.

Thanks!

The "most expansive, coordinated ad campaign on impeachment to date"

Gordon Sondland's testimony was devastating to Donald Trump and should be the nail in the coffin of his presidency. Which is why GOP operatives have launched the "most expansive, coordinated ad campaign on impeachment to date," an eye-popping $7 million campaign slamming impeachment as a political plot against the president by Democrats.

Dear MoveOn member,

Ambassador Gordon Sondland, a Donald Trump supporter who gave $1 million to Trump's inauguration, testified under oath last week that "yes," there was a quid pro quo and that "everyone was in the loop."1

"Everyone" includes Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, and other senior members of the Trump administration.

"We followed the President's orders," Sondland testified.2

Case closed.

Sondland's testimony was devastating to Trump and should be the nail in the coffin of his presidency. Which is why GOP operatives have launched the "most expansive, coordinated ad campaign on impeachment to date," an eye-popping $7 million campaign slamming impeachment as a political plot against the president by Democrats.Trump is also spending "a small fortune on impeachment ads."4

This is the moment, Mar. We have to put the pedal to the metal to get the truth out to the American people and counteract the lies and misinformation coming from the GOP propaganda machine.

That's why I'm writing to you. I've been following MoveOn's impeachment campaign closely, and it appears that while MoveOn's raised enough to do the most critical organizing and media outreach to move impeachment forward, MoveOn's budget is stretched to its limits.

The bottom line? MoveOn's team is having to make hard choices right now about just how much campaigning they can do—and what they have to skip doing—just as we urgently need MoveOn to ramp up its efforts after Congress returns from its Thanksgiving recess.

Will you join me and chip in $3 a week to support MoveOn's all-hands-on-deck campaign to impeach, convict, and remove Donald Trump from office?  (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I'll chip in weekly to help keep MoveOn's impeachment campaign going for as long as it takes.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Trump and GOP operatives don't have to make hard choices. They're spending tens of millions of dollars given to them by millionaires and billionaires to spread lies and misinformation.

So how do we turn this around? It starts with our grassroots power. We've got to show lawmakers and the media just how many people are engaged in the fight to impeach Trump. And to do that, MoveOn needs resources. Because it costs money to:

  • Keep phones on Capitol Hill ringing off the hook every single day;
  • Expand billboards into more House and Senate districts;
  • Run TV ads in critical districts;
  • Follow every Trump-supporting lawmaker around the halls of Congress to capture their cowardice on camera;
  • Buy enough Facebook ads to promote protests across the country the day before the impeachment vote; and
  • Blanket the media with ads to counteract the lies and misinformation coming from Trump's propaganda machine.

While we can win this fight without raising and spending as much as Trump and his enablers do, we do have to raise enough to help engage Americans all around the country. The good news is that if everyone receiving this email pitched in just $1 a week, MoveOn would raise more than enough to compete head-to-head with Trump.

But not everyone even opened this email. Fewer still have read this far. And not everyone reading today can afford to pitch in even a little.

Which is why, Mar, if you can afford to, I hope you'll dig deep and chip in $3 a week to help fund MoveOn's impeachment work, so that we can go big and leave no stone unturned. Are you in? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I'll chip in weekly to help keep MoveOn's impeachment campaign going for as long as it takes.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

And I hope that you'll stay in this fight, even though it's hard and upsetting.

Remember, things won't be this hard forever. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. And if we fight for it, and work for it, and give this everything we've got, we can reach that light sooner.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

The power of MoveOn members in this #Impeachment fight

Our democracy and national security are under attack by Donald Trump—and Republicans are trying to enable and defend him at every move—which is why I, for one, am motivated to work alongside millions of MoveOn members to defend our Constitution and our elections by impeaching and removing Trump.

Dear MoveOn member,

Our democracy and national security are under attack by Donald Trump—and Republicans are trying to enable and defend him at every move—which is why I, for one, am motivated to work alongside millions of MoveOn members to defend our Constitution and our elections by impeaching and removing Trump.

Recent testimony in the U.S. House of Representatives makes it crystal clear that Trump attempted to bribe and bully a foreign official into interfering in our elections for his own political benefit. This is worse than Watergate—and yet even as Democrats are working to expose the truth, Republicans are doing nothing about it.

That is why MoveOn members are taking action.

In 14 cities around the country, mobile billboards are traveling around key congressional districts in the busy days leading up to Thanksgiving, showing our demand that key Republicans stand up to Trump and support impeachment. These are members of Congress who we believe could, if faced with enough constituent pressure, break from Trump's lawless and reckless stranglehold on his party. And the billboards are already being featured in national publications including The Hill and The Washington Post.1,2

In New York's 21st Congressional District, voters are seeing an ad across TV stations hammering Representative Elise Stefanik for being such a "star" defender of Trump—and demonstrating to Republicans everywhere the kind of pressure they'll face. The ads were featured in the Albany Times Union and the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and seen more than 200,000 times online in addition to on TV.3,4

Events organized by local constituents are taking place every week in states with key senators—in Colorado, Maine, Arizona, and Kentucky. And in some cases, events are happening all across the state on the same day—fueled by MoveOn members, allies, and paid professional organizers that MoveOn members have funded. These events are being reported on in local papers of record in each state, such as Louisville's Courier-Journal.5

We've been bird-dogging members of Congress on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.—pursuing Republicans with the simple question of whether it's okay to seek foreign government interference in our elections. Dozens of Republicans have fled from the question. One pretended to be on the phone to avoid answering, and another one even head-butted the camera! You can see the video of these efforts below.

MoveOn and partners are planning actions all across the country the day before the House eventually votes on the articles of impeachment—and already more than 300 events have been registered, with almost 50,000 attendees planning to turn out.

And MoveOn members have made more than 80,000 calls to Congress—in Washington and in home districts—demanding that Congress assert that nobody is above the law.

It can be maddening to see how Republicans have responded to the impeachment hearings—dismissing, interrupting, and threatening witnesses who simply sought to tell the truth, some of them lifelong public servants in our armed forces and diplomatic corps.

If you're mad, keep taking action. The majority of Americans want Trump's impeachment and removal—and MoveOn members are powering these tactics, and more, all across the nation to make our voices heard.

As Robert Reich recently said in an email to MoveOn members, "Congressional Republicans know that Trump is guilty, and they know that they look like damn fools for protecting him. Every day, they are making a calculation of how far they can take this without losing their careers, which is why it is so important for MoveOn to ramp up its campaign to break the Republican dam by making an association with Trump's crimes politically toxic, leaving no choice but to get rid of Trump once and for all."

The question now is whether Republicans will continue to be complicit in Trump's crimes and corruption—or whether they'll choose higher ground. Now is the moment to push them to make the right choice—over this congressional recess week and when they're back in Washington, through the weeks ahead. And to keep thanking Democrats who are standing strong for the principle that nobody is above the law.

Mar, will you chip in $3 a week to help MoveOn's all-hands-on-deck campaign to impeach, convict, and remove Donald Trump from office? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I'll chip in weekly to help keep MoveOn's impeachment campaign going for as long as it takes.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Thank you for all you've been doing to defend our elections, national security, and Constitution. Together, we'll keep up the fight.

Thanks for all you do.

Sign this petition re: investigating Devin Nunes

Sign this petition demanding that Congress investigate Devin Nunes for his shady dealings with Ukrainian officials.

Dear MoveOn member,

One of Rudy Giuliani's close associates has accused Representative Devin Nunes, a congressional ally of President Trump, of using taxpayer dollars to do the president's bidding—and meeting with an ex-Ukrainian official to dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden.1

Nunes, the lead Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, should have recused himself before the impeachment hearings began. Congress must thoroughly investigate these serious allegations.

Sign this petition demanding that Congress investigate Devin Nunes for his shady dealings with Ukrainian officials.

Rep. Nunes, ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee and one of President Trump's most aggressive supporters in Congress, is suspected of meeting with former Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin in Vienna last year.2

The purpose of this alleged covert meeting? To obtain information on Trump's political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.

If true, these new accusations would implicate Rep. Nunes in the crime at the heart of Trump's impeachment inquiry and raise new questions as to how deep the Trump administration's corruption goes. Rep. Nunes is threatening and attempting to discredit news outlets like CNN that reported this story.

Congress must thoroughly and expeditiously investigate these claims. Rep. Nunes, who has access to classified and top-secret information, has already lied and sought to derail the House's impeachment investigation, and we can't let him cover up his own potential role in Trump's scheme.

Force Bolton To Testify (petition)

John Bolton needs to put the American public ahead of personal gain. He must testify in front of Congress immediately.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

John Bolton is holding off on testifying in front of Congress, not for any other reason than personal gain. As former National Security Advisor, Bolton might have intimate knowledge about Donald Trump's conversations with Ukrainian officials. And now, instead of sharing this information with the American public in order to create transparency, he is getting ready to publish a book.

Instead of using his time in the Trump administration for personal gain and greed, Bolton needs to testify in front of Congress and the American people about what he knows. It's time to put democracy and integrity ahead of continued corruption and greed.

Sign this petition demanding that John Bolton testify in front of Congress immediately.

I've seen what petitions can do

MoveOn members start and sign petitions every day. Learn more about how these people-powered petitions make an impact and and how to start your own campaign.

Dear Mar,

My name is Sunjeev Bery, and I love starting petitions.

It's true! As a former MoveOn staff member, I have been behind the scenes to see the power your signatures have in helping build communities, hold people in power accountable, and win campaigns on a range of issues.

But, Mar, I now run Freedom Forward, an organization dedicated to ending U.S. alliances with dictators, kings, and apartheid governments, and I'm even more impressed with the MoveOn petition platform and resources provided to grassroots activists like us!

In the few months since I started using MoveOn's free petition platform, tens of thousands of people have signed my petitions calling out human rights abusers around the world. We've built an amazing community of MoveOn members and made international headlines since a coalition we are part of pressured the New York Public Library to cancel an event organized by Saudi Arabia's brutal crown prince, Mohammad Bin Salman this fall.

Mobilizing thousands of supporters was amazing, Mar. And MoveOn members like you didn't stop there. Every time I sent updates about what else petition signers could do, I was encouraged to see positive feedback from people making phone calls, posting on social media, and showing up to events.

I know that MoveOn has limited resources, just as all organizations do, and that's what makes me so excited to talk about the petition platform. This is giving power directly to the people without needing to wait for MoveOn to take the initiative to figure out what's happening in your own community.

Thank you for listening to my story, and good luck with your petition!

 Thanks for all you do.

Damn fools!

As the impeachment hearings against Donald Trump go on, Republican members of Congress are shredding reality to protect him in the face of mounting evidence that he and his administration are a criminal syndicate.

Dear MoveOn member,

As the impeachment hearings against Donald Trump go on, Republican members of Congress are shredding reality to protect him in the face of mounting evidence that he and his administration are a criminal syndicate.

Here's the truth: Congressional Republicans know that Trump is guilty, and they know that they look like damn fools for protecting him. Every day, they are making a calculation of how far they can take this without losing their careers, which is why it is so important for MoveOn to ramp up its campaign to break the Republican dam by making an association with Trump's crimes politically toxic, leaving no choice but to get rid of Trump once and for all.

Eddie, will you join me and chip in $3 a week to help MoveOn's all-hands-on-deck campaign to impeach, convict, and remove Donald Trump from office? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I'll chip in weekly to help keep MoveOn's impeachment campaign going for as long as it takes.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

I am so grateful that MoveOn members have been in this fight from the beginning, but now that we are in what could be the final sprint, we need to pull out all the stops. The team at MoveOn has shown me their plans, and I believe that if they can execute all of what they want to do, it could make all the difference. With your help, MoveOn will:

  • Run TV ads advocating for impeachment in critical districts during the upcoming congressional recess. While Republicans, including Trump's "new Republican star" Elise Stefanik, are in their home districts this coming week, MoveOn will buy ad space to run commercials demanding that they stop carrying water for Trump and instead stand up for their constituents. When the ad was released on social media on Friday, it got tens of thousands of views in an hour, and we know it will get even more play on television in the district.
  • Build a massive rapid-response network to host events the night before the impeachment vote. These hundreds of nationwide protests will take place in front of congressional offices in hundreds of districts around the country just before the House votes on impeachment, and MoveOn needs to make sure that tens of thousands of people show up across the country to make their support visible.
  • Work on the ground in key states to flip Republican senators to vote to convict. MoveOn has hired organizers in four states, and they're already working tirelessly day in and day out to generate local media coverage, rally communities, host weekly events, and build pressure on the Republican senators who are most likely to vote to convict Trump.
  • Keep camera crews at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., to confront members of Congress. MoveOn activists have been asking a very simple question of Republicans: Is it OK for a president to solicit help from a foreign government to win an election? Republicans are literally running and hiding to avoid answering this question, so MoveOn is capturing evidence of their cowardice, featuring it in digital videos, and sharing the videos far and wide.

The team at MoveOn has told me how much it will cost to run all of these programs at once, plus keep the phones ringing off the hook on Capitol Hill. The bottom line is that right now MoveOn does not have the budget to keep everything going at the intensity I know this fight to get Trump impeached requires, and that is why MoveOn needs your help.

Eddie, will you chip in $3 a week, so that MoveOn can keep every single one of the programs critical to impeaching Donald Trump up and running? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Donald Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I'll chip in weekly to keep MoveOn's impeachment campaign going for as long as it takes.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

This changes everything

As Ambassador Gordon Sondland began to testify on Wednesday morning, only four Republican members watched from the committee room. Why? Because the rest were scrambling to rewrite their talking points as Sondland flipped and admitted that Trump not only directed the Ukraine bribery plot, but that multiple other senior members of the administration were in on it too.

Dear MoveOn member,

As Ambassador Gordon Sondland began to testify on Wednesday morning, only four Republican members watched from the committee room. Why? Because the rest were scrambling to rewrite their talking points as Sondland flipped and admitted that Trump not only directed the Ukraine bribery plot, but that multiple other senior members of the administration were in on it too.

Now that Sondland's testimony has wiped away the remaining Republican excuses and obfuscations, it is up to each and every member of the GOP to make a simple choice: Will you defend our Constitution, or will you defend Donald Trump? They must choose the former.

We want to drive that message home. So our Creative Lab has put together a TV ad, and we are buying space to run it in prime time—starting in the district of "new Republican star" Elise Stefanik.

Eddie, can you chip in $3 to help us buy more time to replay this ad in Representative Stefanik's district and expand our ad buy into other districts as well?

MoveOn teams have been hard at work pounding the pavement on Capitol Hill to get Republicans on the record, organizing on the ground in key states where senators could break with their party, and buying space for billboards that will go up in important districts next week. These TV ads are the next step in our plan to put a mirror up to these more "moderate" Republicans who may be wavering in their support for Trump after hearing all of the damning testimony from the past two weeks of impeachment hearings. They can be convinced.

Our ad is set to air during all of the major Sunday morning shows this weekend, on Sunday's episode of "60 Minutes," and during MSNBC's "Morning Joe" every day next week to keep the pressure up while Rep. Stefanik is home for recess.

But we don't have the money to keep the ad running any longer than that or to produce similar ads to run in other districts. That's where you come in, Eddie.

We cannot afford to lose all of the momentum from the past two weeks of hearings when Congress goes on recess next week, which is why hitting the airwaves with our ad just as members head home is so important.

Will you chip in $3 right now to make sure we can keep our ad running over and over again—and make similar ad buys in other districts?

Gordon Sondland's impeachment testimony was the most damning yet in the impeachment inquiry. He said that when he worked to bribe Ukrainian officials, he was "following the president's orders." He said that "everyone was in the loop," and that "we knew what we were doing and why." And in the starkest moment of the day, he simply said, "Was there a quid pro quo? The answer is yes."1

Any member of Congress who heard yesterday's testimony must hold Trump accountable and vote to impeach him.

Can you chip in $3 right now to help us get our ads on TV and make sure Republicans know that if they choose to protect Donald Trump, they are choosing to abandon our democracy?

Thanks for all you do.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Karine Jean-Pierre, MoveOn's chief public affairs officer. I'm also a political analyst on MSNBC. Maybe you've seen me on TV!

In my wallet, I carry something special that my cousin Jeannot Pierre gave to me before my first day working for President Barack Obama in the White House.

It's a photo of my extended, working-class, Haitian American immigrant family visiting Washington, D.C., in the summer of 1982, just before I turned eight. There we were, seated on the base of the railing in front of the South Lawn of the White House.

Back then, I was a timid, skinny girl with braids. I was so shy that the nuns at my Catholic school called my mother in to say that they were worried about me. "She doesn't play with other children," one said. "She just keeps to herself."

My new book, "Moving Forward," tells the story of how I found my voice. I wrote the book to show that politics can be accessible to anyone who wants to take part, no matter how or where you grew up or how young or old you might be.

If you donate to MoveOn now, we'll send you a copy of my book, "Moving Forward."

My parents are immigrants from a beautiful country, Haiti, derided by Donald Trump as a "shithole."

My mom lost her mother when she was still a child and was forced to fend for herself to survive.

My parents eventually left Haiti, fleeing a dictatorship where their words were censored but their ambitions couldn't be. My mom worked as a home health care aide, my dad drove a New York City taxicab, and they scraped by, never able to take a break, just so that I could catch mine. That ethos of hard work, grit, and determination runs through my family.

In my new book, I talk about how I found my way into politics, working on four presidential campaigns, serving in the White House, and running political campaigns.

Today, I'm the chief public affairs officer for MoveOn, an MSNBC political analyst, and a lecturer at Columbia University.

My book is deeply personal. But it is also a handbook. I include practical, specific advice for how anyone can get more involved in the political process—including which journalists to follow on Twitter, what to read and watch online, and my favorite political TV shows, movies, and books.

Click here to order a copy of my new book.

There's still some of that shy school girl in me. Every time I see the red eye of the TV camera or have to grip the sides of a podium to steady myself at a rally, I calm my nerves by reminding myself that I speak for the millions of people who do not have a voice in our society.

People like my parents who have struggled for every single dollar and who still lost the house they had paid for.

For a long time, I was scared, scared, scared to appear on TV or speak in front of large crowds. But now I have a platform, and I'm going to use it. I'm going to say what I have to say. I speak for others, which inspires me.

I am so proud to be a voice and face of MoveOn. I hope that you'll read my story. And I hope that you'll order it from MoveOn rather than from a corporate bookseller, so your donation can help power the work we do at MoveOn.

Click here to order your limited-edition copy of my book, "Moving Forward," now, and support MoveOn.

Thanks for all you do.

–Karine Jean-Pierre

Terrifying New York Times poll

We're in trouble, and it's time to wake up. In our most recent survey, 57.2% of MoveOn members said that they believe that Donald Trump will be defeated in 2020. But new polling tells a very different story that should send chills down our spines.

Dear MoveOn member,

We're in trouble, and it's time to wake up.

In our most recent survey, 57.2% of MoveOn members said that they believe that Donald Trump will be defeated in 2020. But new polling tells a very different story that should send chills down our spines.

According to a new poll from The New York Times, the presidential election in 2020, just like in 2016, will most likely be decided by a few hundred thousand votes spread across the critical swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona—as those states will tip the Electoral College to the winner. New data shows a statistical dead heat or even an advantage for Trump in every single one of these states.1

It gets worse. Even as Trump's national approval rating has cratered, his edge in the states that will likely decide the election has grown since 2016.2 And if you think that it's still too early to rely on polling data, here's the harsh truth: In the last three presidential elections, head-to-head polling one year out from Election Day has been just as close to the final result as polls taken the day before the election.3

These polls are a stark reminder that we cannot rely on Trump's unpopularity, cruelty, and ineptitude to hand us an election victory. 2020 is likely to be the most hard-fought and important election in our lifetimes, and there is not a moment to waste.

MoveOn is ready to meet this moment and fight hard every day until the election, and it is why we are preparing to reveal the details of the largest election campaign in our 21-year history. But we're behind on our budget goal for the month and need to sign up 1,393 new monthly donors by November 30 to close the gap. Eddie, will you help us fill the gap and fuel the most important year in MoveOn's existence by chipping in $5 a month?

Yes, I will become a monthly donor to help power MoveOn's all-hands-on-deck effort to defeat Donald Trump and the GOP in 2020.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in monthly.

MoveOn will announce our full election program in the coming weeks, but here is just some of what we will focus on to defeat Trump and his Republican cronies in 2020:

  • Working to end GOP control of the Senate. Defeating Trump is our top priority, but if Mitch McConnell holds on to his power in the Senate, none of the big, progressive priorities that are so critical for our country and which will also mobilize people to go to the polls will ever get done. That's why MoveOn is putting an extra focus on critical Senate elections in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Maine, and more—to flip the Senate blue on the same night that we defeat Trump.
  • Inspiring and mobilizing progressive voters to turn out in droves on Election Day. It's not enough to just register voters, those voters need to get excited about the candidates they are voting for and feel that their votes will matter, which is why MoveOn is working on innovative tactics for volunteers to connect with potential voters directly, including sending hundreds of millions of text messages, to make sure they are energized and ready to vote to defeat Trump and the GOP.
  • Directly raising millions of dollars for inspiring, progressive candidates up and down the ballot. In 2018, MoveOn members came together to donate small amounts that REALLY added up for candidates across the country running bold, progressive campaigns. We'll dial up that program in 2020 to help fuel the campaigns of progressive champions fighting for an agenda to make America a country where everyone can thrive.

There are a few other aspects to our program that we can't announce just yet—including a big, new secret weapon that could make all the difference next year. But in order to run on all cylinders for the next year, we need to close our budget gap by signing up 1,393 new monthly donors by the end of November.

Will you chip in $5 a month to make sure we don't have to make any cuts to our 2020 election program?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

Not able to chip in monthly? Click here because MoveOn still needs your help.

Look, these new poll numbers are scary, there is no way around it. But we always knew that this election would be close.

The good news is that the Blue Wave in 2018 and the recent results in places including Virginia, Kansas, and Kentucky have shown that the Resistance is having a real electoral impact.

We will need to work harder than ever before to make sure that impact is definitive in 2020. Are you with us, Eddie?

Call now: Defend democracy in NY!

What happens in the next seven days could make or break New York's democracy.
Dear New York MoveOn members,

What happens in the next seven days could make or break New York's democracy.

At the last minute, Governor Andrew Cuomo snuck language into an election reform package that could undermine ballot access for the Working Families Party (WFP), a key progressive ally that helps elect progressive Democrats in New York. This effort may be retribution for the campaign the WFP led to end the "Independent Democratic Conference"—a breakaway group of self-serving, conservative Democrats that was handing over control of the New York State Senate to the GOP for seven long years!

Will you join me in calling your state legislators to ensure that the Working Families Party is able to stay on the ballot?

Here's where to call:

Assembly Member Melissa Miller and Senator Todd Kaminsky
  • Assm. Miller - (518) 455-3028
  • Sen. Kaminsky - (518) 455-3401
(If, for some reason, the numbers above don't work, you can find up-to-date contact info for your representatives on the websites of the State Assembly and State Senate.)

Here's a sample script: "Hello, I am calling because the public financing commission is scheduled to release its report next week. I'm calling to ask you to make a public statement asking the commissioners to leave minor parties alone and instead focus on creating a strong public financing plan. Thank you!"

Want more details before you call? Read on.

Depending on what happens with New York's election reform package, New York could become a national model for clean, grassroots democracy—or we could take a massive step backwards and damage our democracy.

This spring, our state lawmakers in Albany passed legislation creating a commission empowered to design a robust system of public financing of elections, to end big money's stranglehold on state politics. That was a step in the right direction.

But the bad news is this: At the last minute, Gov. Cuomo inserted language into that legislation giving the commission broad powers to make other unilateral changes to our election system, including undermining ballot access for the Working Families Party.

The WFP's work to elect progressives plays a crucial role for progressives in New York politics. And their campaign to end the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) was a game-changer. For seven long years, although Democrats were elected to the majority of New York State Senate seats by voters, Republicans controlled the chamber. But, thanks to the WFP, not anymore.

Here's why we're worried. Jay Jacobs, Gov. Cuomo's appointee who is leading the commission, had been spending a lot more time pushing to destroy the WFP—perhaps to punish them for ending control of the IDC—than figuring out how to implement a strong system of public financing of elections. In fact, The New York Times recently reported on a secret plan of his that would effectively ban the WFP, but protect the right-wing Conservative Party—which would create a permanent structural advantage for the GOP in New York!1

It's all coming to a head in the next seven days. The commission is due to release its report before Thanksgiving. And the decisions it makes are likely to be binding.

The commissioners are making up their minds right now. So we need to make sure they hear loud and clear from the legislators who appointed them: We need a strong system of public financing, and we will not allow the commission to be used as a weapon to settle political scores against progressives.

Will you join me in making a phone call to your state legislators?

Here's where to call:

Assembly Member Melissa Miller and Senator Todd Kaminsky
  • Assm. Miller - (518) 455-3028
  • Sen. Kaminsky - (518) 455-3401

Thank you!

Donald Trump just called her "a new Republican star"

If you watched any of the first few days of the impeachment hearings against Donald Trump, you may have noticed a new "star" featured in the Republicans' reality TV-style scheme to derail the process: Representative Elise Stefanik of New York.

Dear MoveOn member,

If you watched any of the first few days of the impeachment hearings against Donald Trump, you may have noticed a new "star" featured in the Republicans' reality TV-style scheme to interrupt the hearings: Representative Elise Stefanik of New York.

Rep. Stefanik has taken center stage in the hearings, using every opportunity to attempt to undermine the rules, enter false and pointless content into the official record, and malign Democrats and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff—she even used the entirety of one of her question periods to read out the titles of news articles smearing Chairman Schiff. Trump called her "a new Republican star" because of her performance.1

Rep. Stefanik has made it clear that instead of advocating for our democracy and her constituents in New York's 21st Congressional District, one of the most critical swing districts in the country, she will blindly support Trump's criminality and corruption. We need to hold her accountable, Eddie.

The good news is that Rep. Stefanik's Democratic opponent, Tedra Cobb, is a dedicated public servant who is ready to serve the people of her district in northern New York and stand up to wannabe-tyrants like Trump. MoveOn members endorsed Cobb when she ran in 2018, and since the district now only leans Republican by four points, we CAN win this seat in 2020.

Here's where it gets even more exciting: In the first couple days after Rep. Stefanik's shameless display during the impeachment proceedings, Cobb's campaign raised more than $1 dollars from tens of thousands of grassroots donors. But let's not stop there.

Will you chip in $3 directly to Tedra Cobb and help her campaign raise $2 million by the end of the week?

With your help, we will send a clear message to Rep. Stefanik that her time in Washington is up—and show other Republicans that blind loyalty to Trump in spite of his crimes and corruption will carry political consequences next November.

Rep. Stefanik may have only received national attention recently with her performance in the impeachment hearings, but her career in Congress has long been one of claiming moderation while blindly supporting far-right policies and efforts to take rights away from her constituents.

  • She voted against bipartisan background check legislation to curb gun violence.2
  • She voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.3
  • She voted against legislation to protect our elections from foreign interference.4
  • She voted against raising the minimum wage.5
  • She voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill that would make sure women receive equal pay for equal work.6
  • And she voted to rip health care away from millions of Americans, again, and again, and again.7

In contrast, Cobb has spent her career advocating for the expansion of health care. She started a health clinic to provide care to rural communities and has served on HIV/AIDS outreach committees providing testing and education.

Cobb is dedicated to protecting health care for all Americans, addressing the gun violence epidemic, fighting climate change, and reforming the criminal justice system.

Unlike Rep. Elise Stefanik, Tedra Cobb will help push our country forward.

Will you chip in $3 to help her campaign raise over $2 million this week?

The first few days of the impeachment inquiry have shown just how far some Republicans are willing to go to deny reality in an effort to protect Trump.

In the face of damning testimony, Rep. Stefanik and others would do nothing else but deflect, lie, and attempt to turn the hearings into a circus.

Antics like that do not belong in Washington, and anyone so willing to continue to defend Trump's actions while hearing these facts should lose their job as a result. By supporting Cobb now, we not only can bring critical resources to a key district, but also send a message to Republicans across the country that there will be political consequences for enabling Trump's crimes.

MoveOn members can help elect a real leader by supporting Tedra Cobb and send Rep. Elise Stefanik packing. Will you chip in $3 directly to Cobb's campaign right now?

Thanks for all you do.

Help us erect impeachment billboards to put pressure on key Republicans in Congress

Our billboards will very visibly help get the truth out about the extent of Trump's crimes—and that Republicans STILL are doing nothing, even as more and more damning evidence is exposed.

Dear MoveOn member,

This week's public hearings on impeachment revealed "damning new evidence" and "explosive new detail" regarding Donald Trump's direct involvement in bribing Ukraine to help his re-election.1

Ambassador Bill Taylor—a 50-year civil servant appointed to serve in the U.S. government by Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Geroge W. Bush, and Trump himself, and now the top U.S. official in Ukraine—testified that making aid approved by Congress to help save lives in Ukraine contingent on helping Trump's re-election campaign was simply "crazy."2

And then yesterday, as former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testified, Trump ruthlessly attacked her on Twitter, which is tampering with witness testimony and sends a chilling message to other potential witnesses.3 And it's another impeachable offense.4

With Democrats in control of the House, we know there are more than enough Democratic votes to pass the eventual impeachment articles. And, with each passing day, impeachment in the House looking increasingly likely. But if we're going to convict Trump and remove him from office, we need Senate Republicans to join with Democrats—which means we need the Republican wall around Trump to break. That gets much harder to envision if no House Republicans back impeachment.

That's why, right now, the single most important thing we can do on impeachment is drive the message as strongly as possible to retiring or reachable Republicans that they must put the Constitution and our country over Trump's personal interest and support impeachment.

To make sure they get the message, we're gearing up to launch billboards—like these—targeting retiring or reachable Republicans in the House:

We've designed the billboards. And we'll put them up if we can raise $100,000 by Monday. So far, MoveOn members have chipped in $52,000, so we're more than halfway there. Will you chip in $3 to help put us over the top?

Yes, I'll chip in to help erect billboards targeting key House Republicans on impeachment.

Our billboards will very visibly help get the truth out about the extent of Trump's crimes—and that Republicans STILL are doing nothing, even as more and more damning evidence is exposed.

MoveOn is running an all-hands-on-deck campaign to ensure that Trump is impeached, convicted, and removed from office.

MoveOn members are already flooding Congress with calls. We're chasing and confronting Republicans throughout the halls of Congress. We're organizing on the ground in key states to turn the pressure way up on the senators who are most likely to break ranks with Trump.

With the last congressional recess before the House is expected to vote on impeachment coming up, we've got to speak directly to Republicans on their home turf and let them know that it's not too late for them to do the right thing for the country.

That's why we're gearing up to put up these billboards. If we can raise the funds.

If we act now, we can have these billboards up in key districts with retiring or reachable Republicans when Congress will be on break and back home for the last time before the impeachment vote.

But we can put these billboards up only if MoveOn members chip in $100,000. We're just over halfway there, thanks to MoveOn members like you, Eddie. Can we count on you to put us over the top?

Yes, I'll chip in $3 right now to help erect billboards targeting key House Republicans on impeachment.

Thanks for all you do.

–David, Emily, Schuyler, Tzyh, and the rest of the team

P.S. We wouldn't ask if it weren't important. But MoveOn members decided to make this our top-priority campaign, because the stakes are so high. And to keep adding new tactics, like these billboards, we need to raise additional funds from MoveOn members like you.

That's why you're hearing from us so much, and why we need your support today. We know it's asking a lot, but these billboards could make a crucial difference in key districts around the country, and we need your help to put them up. Will you chip in $3?
