No witnesses. Now we make them pay.

Senate Republicans just voted to wrap up Donald Trump's impeachment trial without hearing from a single witness.

Dear MoveOn member,

Senate Republicans just voted to conclude Donald Trump's impeachment trial without hearing from a single witness.1

First, Republicans said there was no quid pro quo and that Trump's phone call with Ukraine was "perfect."

Then, they said there might have been a quid pro quo, but it was to prevent corruption in Ukraine, not to get a foreign government to help with Trump's re-election.

And now, finally, Republicans are saying, "Yep, he did it. And we just don't care."

Barring some radical and stunning new developments, the Republican-led Senate will soon try to end this sham trial with a total cover-up of Donald Trump's high crimes and misdemeanors—and without hearing what a single witness had to say.

What an absolute and total disgrace.

There's only one solution left to save our democracy and hold Trump accountable: We need to make sure that this shameless cover-up ends the political careers of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, Cory Gardner, Martha McSally, Susan Collins, Joni Ernst, and every other Senate Republican who enabled this outrage.

Will you donate $5 a month to help defeat Donald Trump and the Senate Republicans who just voted to cover-up Trump's crimes without hearing from a single witness?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly to help defeat Mitch McConnell and the other Republicans who covered up Trump's crimes without hearing from a single witness.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

What we're witnessing is truly shocking, even by GOP standards.

After months of denials, excuses, and transparent lies from Trump ... After a mountain of evidence proving the case that, yes, Trump did exactly what he was accused of doing ... After Trump and his attorneys basically admitted it on the floor of the Senate ...

Republicans simply shrugged and said, "We don't care."

But guess what? They don't get the last word. Voters do. And even before this disaster, Republicans up for re-election this November were in deep, deep trouble.

Of the seven most unpopular U.S. senators in the country, five of them are Republicans up for re-election this November: McConnell, Gardner, McSally, Collins, and Ernst. And they all are facing serious Democratic challengers.

And they all just participated in rigging the Senate trial to assure that Trump would be let off the hook without testimony from a single witness. Even Collins, who said she supported "a witness or two," only announced her vote in favor of witnesses after it was clear that McConnell had the votes he needed NOT to call any witnesses. Just who does she think she's fooling?

Now it's up to us to hold Trump and his Senate Republican cover-up caucus accountable. Will you chip in $5 a month to help vote them out in November?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly to help defeat Mitch McConnell and the other Republicans who covered up Trump's crimes without hearing from a single witness.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Mar, after the final vote is taken, Trump and McConnell plan to gloat and celebrate.

Next Tuesday, Trump will give his State of the Union Address and brag about his impending "total exoneration."

It will be galling. It will be outrageous. It might even make you want to open up your window and yell, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

But we're not going to just sit back and take it. We're going to start organizing now to win in November. We will take back our country and make them pay. Will you help out by chipping in $5 a month?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

Mitch McConnell is flat-out panicking

Just a few days ago, there wasn't a single TV ad on the air supporting impeachment. Now, thanks to an unbelievable flood of donations from MoveOn members, we're on the air in the home states of Senators Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Lamar Alexander—three of the most likely Republicans to flip to our side.

Dear MoveOn member,

Mitch McConnell just admitted in a closed door meeting with fellow Republicans that he doesn't have the votes to block witnesses from testifying in Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial.1

A savvy Senate leader like McConnell would NEVER admit that he doesn't have the votes—unless he was absolutely desperate to put pressure on undecided senators.

This is clear proof that our pressure on Republican senators is working.

And now, McConnell is sweating bullets that he doesn't have the votes. That's NOT a coincidence.

Now that we're on the air with TV ads, we need to match that with a major ratcheting up of pressure from real people as the vote nears. Will you chip in $3 to help turn up the heat?

Yes, I'll chip in $3 to help pressure Republicans to require witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump.

Republicans know that if the public gets to hear directly from eyewitnesses under oath, it'll be a disaster. One top McConnell advisor said it would be like "the Hindenburg" if John Bolton and others testify.2

We know why they're so scared. The only way they can sell Trump's acquittal to the public is with a sham trial with no witnesses and no real examination of the evidence.

So here's our plan:

  • Impeachment protests: In Washington, D.C., and the states of the seven most important undecided senators, we're organizing protests to make sure they feel the heat from their constituents. To make these big and visible, we need to pay for everything that goes into pulling off events like these, from hiring organizers, to funding media outreach, to printing signs, to paying for permits where they are needed.
  • "Bird-dogging" undecided senators: We saw during the Brett Kavanaugh hearing that one of the most effective ways of turning up the heat on senators is to confront them directly in public. Remember the activist confronting Jeff Flake in the elevator? It's a tactic called "bird-dogging"—just like a hunting dog chases birds out of hiding, we'll stop senators from hiding behind closed doors by challenging them in public spaces.
  • Lighting up the phones in Washington, D.C.: Senate staffers keep careful track of how many calls come in on each side of an issue. The polls say that he public overwhelmingly supports requiring witnesses, but unless they're getting phone calls from their own constituents, senators will assume that this isn't an issue that voters actually care that much about.

Republicans want us to believe that the outcome of the impeachment debate is set in stone and that nothing in the trial really matters. But they're bluffing. They know that if the full truth comes out, all bets are off. One way or another, Trump WILL be held accountable, unless they can bury the truth.

The big Senate vote on witnesses is expected THIS Friday, so we need to keep up the pressure. Will you chip in $3?

Yes, I'll chip in $3 to help pressure Republicans to require witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump.

Thanks for all you do.

What issue is important to you in 2020?

MoveOn members start and sign petitions every day. Learn more about how these people-powered petitions make an impact and and how to start your own campaign.

Dear MoveOn member,

The year we've been waiting for is finally here: 2020. This year, we'll do everything in our power to remove Trump from office and elect a progressive champion to create the reforms we need, like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.

So now we've got to get to work.

Start a petition today on an issue that matters to you in November's election.

Candidates up and down the ballot need to hear from us in order to shape their agenda. Do you want your future senator to prioritize protecting voting rights? Should your future mayor build more affordable housing units? Are the presidential primary candidates addressing issues that matter to you? Tell them by starting a petition and gathering support in your community.

Petitions can change conversations on key issues.

In 2019, the US Youth Climate Strike partnered with MoveOn and started a petition asking the presidential primary candidates to support a televised debate or forum that focused exclusively on environmental issues and policies. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Beto O'Rourke were just a few of the candidates who responded to our petition.

All of this happened because a young, passionate group of people started a petition. It was a powerful moment where a petition helped change the conversation and drew the attention of candidates for the highest office. That's what we can accomplish together.

So what is important to you this year? Take five minutes and start a petition on it here to influence the 2020 elections.

Thanks for all you do.

Sign the petition re: John Bolton

John Bolton has made shocking new allegations about Donald Trump's conduct in office. Now, he must take the stand to tell the Senate and the American people about what he knows.

Dear MoveOn member,

Donald Trump told John Bolton directly that he wanted to freeze financial aid to Ukraine until officials there helped with an investigation into the Bidens, according to the former national security adviser's explosive new manuscript.1

This allegation refutes the White House's impeachment defense—and the Senate must allow Bolton to testify about it as part of Trump's impeachment trial.

Add your name to tell the Senate you demand witnesses be able to testify.

John Bolton has made shocking new allegations about Donald Trump's conduct in office. Now, he must take the stand to tell the Senate and the American people about what he knows.

In his new manuscript, Bolton asserts that President Trump said he planned to delay security funding to Ukraine until an investigation into the Bidens was launched. He also reveals new details about how senior cabinet officials—including Attorney General Barr and acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney—were involved in the scandal.2

Add your name to tell your senators: We deserve to hear what John Bolton has to say. Call on him to testify as part of Trump's impeachment investigation.

This is a major clue as to why John Bolton was one of several witnesses that the White House blocked from cooperating with the House's impeachment inquiry. The information he might reveal in his testimony could completely undermine Trump's defense.

And it's possible that Bolton—who allegedly once equated the Ukraine scandal to a "drug deal"—would be a big crack in the dam, leading to more and more administration officials coming forward to tell the truth and avoid going down with Trump.3

Bolton has already stated that he's "prepared to testify" in the impeachment trial. If the Senate blocks a credible, high-level witness like Bolton from taking the stand—this trial will NEVER give the American people real answers or justice.4

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thank you.

A stunning new poll

Mar—There are currently 12 television ads on the airwaves about impeachment. Want to know how many supported Donald Trump's conviction and removal until today? Zero.

Mar—There are currently 12 television ads on the airwaves about impeachment. Want to know how many supported Donald Trump's conviction and removal until today? Zero.1

That's right. More than a week into Trump's impeachment trial, every single ad hitting TV audiences about impeachment has been paid for by Trump supporters. But we're going to change that. Over the last five days, more than 27,000 MoveOn members have chipped in so that we can buy time to run our ads on television targeting GOP senators who are most likely to break away from Trump.

We've almost raised what we need to run impeachment TV ads, thanks to the generous support of more than 27,000 MoveOn members in the past five days. But we're still $100,000 short.

Can you chip in $3 now, so that we can get our ads on television tomorrow?

For more details on this campaign, see our recent email below:

Dear MoveOn member,

Today is day six of the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump, and for the past week there has not been a single ad on TV putting pressure on the Republican senators most likely to break with Mitch McConnell to force witnesses to be called and for the White House to hand over documents related to the Ukraine scandal.2

Yet a new poll shows that about 72% of Americans agree that the trial "should allow witnesses with firsthand knowledge of the impeachment charges to testify," including 69% of Republicans.3 Yes, 69% of Republicans agree! Rachel Maddow called the results "stunning."4

And just last night, news broke that John Bolton has confirmed in his forthcoming book that Trump said explicitly that the aid to Ukraine would remain frozen until Ukraine announced investigations into the Bidens, and that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Attorney General William Barr, and acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney were also in on the scheme.5

It would take only four Republican senators to join with the Democrats to turn Mitch McConnell's kangaroo court into a fair trial that can uncover the full extent of Trump's transgressions, and these John Bolton bombshells make it more likely than ever that some Republicans will break away.

We urgently need to turn up the heat, Mar. There has not yet been a single ad targeting Republican senators to demand a fair trial and hold Trump accountable, causing Chuck Todd of "Meet the Press" to ask, "Why aren't Democrats making life miserable for vulnerable Republicans on impeachment?"6

MoveOn's Creative Lab, which has created powerful ads seen by millions of Americans, has swung into action to produce hard-hitting ads and start to get them up on TV in the states with senators we can influence, after more than 27,000 MoveOn members chipped in to help fill the void in the last three days. But it's very expensive to run TV ads. We still need to raise $100,000 to get an expanded TV ad buy on the air in the key states and keep it going through the planned Senate vote on whether to hear from witnesses, which is likely to take place late this week.

Will you make an emergency donation of $3 right now to help us run hard-hitting impeachment ads on TV in key states?

The second article of Trump's impeachment is for obstructing Congress: covering up witnesses and withholding documents from the American people.

Trump has blocked his closest aides from testifying and has refused to hand over a single document—a single email, text message, letter, phone transcript ... any document—related to the Ukraine scandal.

All 53 Republican senators actively participated in the cover-up last Tuesday night, voting 10 separate times to block subpoenas for Trump administration witnesses and documents, and to otherwise rig the trial rules.7

Trump bragged about it, saying, "[H]onestly, we have all the material. They don't have the material."8

But McConnell was forced to agree to a Senate vote on whether to hear from witnesses after the opening arguments and senators' questions—which means that we have a narrow window of time to increase pressure on the Republican senators who have been wavering.

We have organizers on the ground in the states of key senators and are lighting up the Senate switchboard with phone calls, but it's not enough. We still need to raise $100,000 to get our hard-hitting impeachment ads up on TV in the key states. And we need your help to do it.

Will you rush an urgent donation of $3 to help us run hard-hitting impeachment ads on TV in key states?

Yes, I'll chip in now.

Together, we can hold Trump accountable. But it's going to take each and every one of us.

Thanks for all you do.

Stunning new poll (this could force the hands of Republican senators, Mar)

There's not a single TV ad targeting Republican senators to demand a fair trial and hold Trump accountable, causing Chuck Todd of "Meet the Press" to ask, "Why aren't Democrats making life miserable for vulnerable Republicans on impeachment?"

Mar—The vote on whether to hear from witnesses in Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial is just days away, but right now there's not a single ad on TV putting pressure on wavering Republican senators to break from Mitch McConnell to insist on a fair trial.

We've been working all weekend to change that. A record number of MoveOn members have now chipped in so that we can run hard-hitting TV ads in the states with Republican senators who are most likely to break from McConnell.

But we're still $150,000 short, and time is running out. Can you chip in $3 right now to help us run hard-hitting impeachment ads on TV in key states?

Donald Trump committed crimes, is guilty, was impeached by the House, and needs to be removed from office by the U.S. Senate.

The Senate is holding its impeachment trial now and, this week, will be taking key votes on whether to call witnesses, which is our best chance to uncover new evidence that would break through Trump's grasp on the Republican Party and convince Republican senators to put country over party.

The majority of Americans support Trump's removal, and the vast majority of Americans support a real trial, including witnesses. Now we must manifest that support in Washington, D.C.

That's why we're asking people to join the #SwarmTheSenate activities in Washington. For those who are able to spend the day in D.C., Wednesday will be a focal day for visibility actions. Join the orientation training at 10 a.m. before the noon event in the Hart Senate Office Building, or just join the noon event if that's all you're able to do!

Tomorrow is day 6 of the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump, and there's not a single ad on TV right now putting pressure on the Republican senators most likely to break with Mitch McConnell to force witnesses to be called and for the White House to hand over documents related to the Ukraine scandal.1

Yet a new poll shows that about 72% of Americans agree that the trial "should allow witnesses with firsthand knowledge of the impeachment charges to testify," including 69% of Republicans.2 Yes, 69% of Republicans agree! Rachel Maddow called the results "stunning."3

It would take only four Republican senators to join with the Democrats to turn Mitch McConnell's kangaroo court into a fair trial that can uncover the full extent of Trump's transgressions.

We urgently need to turn up the heat, Mar. There are 11 impeachment ads running on TV right now, and all 11 support Trump. There's not a single ad targeting Republican senators to demand a fair trial and hold Trump accountable, causing Chuck Todd of "Meet the Press" to ask, "Why aren't Democrats making life miserable for vulnerable Republicans on impeachment?"4

MoveOn's Creative Lab, which has created powerful ads seen by millions of Americans, has swung into action to produce hard-hitting ads and start to get them up on TV in the states with senators we can influence, after more than 19,000 MoveOn members chipped in to help fill the void in the last three days. But it's very expensive to run TV ads. We've set a new goal of raising $750,000 by Monday to get an expanded TV ad buy on the air in the key states and keep it going through the planned Senate vote on whether to hear from witnesses, which is likely to take place late next week.

All 53 Republican senators actively participated in the cover-up last Tuesday night, voting 10 separate times to block subpoenas for Trump administration witnesses and documents, and to otherwise rig the trial rules.5

Trump bragged about it, saying, "[H]onestly, we have all the material. They don't have the material."6

We need to raise $750,000 by Monday to get our hard-hitting impeachment ads up on TV in the key states. And we need your help to do it.

Will you rush an urgent donation of $3 to help us run hard-hitting impeachment ads on TV in key states?

Yes, I'll chip in now.

Together, we can hold Trump accountable. But it's going to take each and every one of us.

Thanks for all you do.

Stunning new impeachment poll

There are 11 impeachment ads running on TV right now, and all 11 are GOP ads. Sign the petition re: McConnell blocking press access to impeachment trial

Sign the petition to remove unprecedented press restrictions so the public has full access to Trump's impeachment trial.

Dear MoveOn member,

Mitch McConnell and Senate Rules Committee Chair Roy Blunt have instituted unprecedented press restrictions in order to prevent the public from having full access to Trump's Senate impeachment trial—including limits on what the public can see and on reporters' ability to talk to senators.1

Without the free press, we can't fight against abusive governmental policies or defend our basic freedoms.

Sign the petition demanding Mitch McConnell allow press to have regular access to the impeachment trial.

We urge Mitch McConnell to rescind the new, unprecedented restrictions on the press seeking to inform the public about the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump. This is a crucial and historic moment that makes it all the more important for this Senate to reaffirm the unanimous Senate resolution on the vital and indispensable role the free press serves.

The Trump administration has been attacking the free press for years. Now that Trump has a chance of getting held accountable for his abuses of power, the Senate is allowing him to hide details from the public.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Roe v. Wade is the law of the land. Let's keep it that way.

A commemoration of Roe v. Wade and a reminder to not give up the fight

Dear MoveOn member,

It's a new decade, but the same old fights for our reproductive rights are not over. Across the country, anti-abortion politicians are trying to legislate abortion out of existence. From 2011 to 2017, state legislatures have passed nearly 400 abortion restrictions.1 These laws include everything from bans on specific methods of abortion care to biased counseling and parental involvement requirements to onerous regulations—such as widening the hallways—that are aimed at shutting down clinics and making patients jump through unnecessary and often humiliating hoops.

We're fighting back. Last year, MoveOn members helped ensure access to safe abortion and reproductive health care by donating $208,715 to the Yellowhammer Fund and $183,000 to the Gateway Fund, the abortion funds for Alabama and Missouri, respectively. We joined with our partners at Planned Parenthood and NARAL for more than 300 #StopTheBans rallies across the country to tell state lawmakers to end these attacks on our reproductive rights, and we raised $262,850 for Planned Parenthood when it came under direct attack from the Trump administration this fall.

The impact on the state level is that these laws restricting access fall hardest on low-income communities, people of color, and the LGBTQ and other marginalized communities. Today is the 47th anniversary of Roe v. WadeAbortion has been recognized as constitutional right in the U.S. for 47 years, but right now, this right is under attack like never before.

We're on the eve of one of the largest national attacks on reproductive rights. On March 4, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a case on a Louisiana law that, if allowed to take effect, would decimate abortion access statewide and leave Louisiana with only one abortion clinic. And, under the new conservative court, the case could set a dangerous precedent that challenges our rights established in Roe v. Wade. Abortion rights are meaningless without access, and we cannot afford to be silent.

So we're getting prepared, and we want to make sure everyone is ready to mobilize if needed. MoveOn has joined the #MyRightMyDecision coalition made up of national and grassroots reproductive rights and justice organizations from all across the country who are fighting back against the attacks on our bodily autonomy.2

Keeping abortion safe, legal, and accessible is about more than just health care. Watch "Ours to Tell" from We Testify and Planned Parenthood, a short film that shows what empowered lives people can live when they've had the chance to make their own reproductive choices.

Today, in honor of Roe's anniversary, MoveOn took part in a Twitter chat with the #MyRightMyDecision coalition. We answered questions about abortion access across the country, and included information about how you can get involved to help protect reproductive rights. You can follow #MyRightMyDecision on Twitter for highlights. Together, we're fighting to defend abortion access.

Reproductive freedom is essential in our work to create a country where everyone can thrive. Please take 15 minutes to watch these inspirational people share their stories about how generations of securing and protecting reproductive rights have changed their and their families' lives. Then get ready to turn the heat up as more attacks arise in states—and possibly from the Supreme Court.

Thanks for all you do.

The ground has shifted on impeachment

We need only four Republican senators to insist on a fair trial to break through Mitch McConnell's stonewalling, and several are publicly wavering in the face of all this new evidence.

Dear MoveOn member,

Over the last week, there's been an avalanche of damning evidence against Donald Trump.

On the Rachel Maddow Show, Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas publicly confirmed that Trump directly approved efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate the Bidens.1

Maddow also exposed text messages suggesting that Trump's team had Marie Yovanovitch, the then-U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, under surveillance as part of an effort to smear her and "get her out of the way."2

And the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office concluded that the Trump administration's withholding of the aid to Ukraine violated the law.3

We need only four Republican senators to insist on a fair trial to break through Mitch McConnell's stonewalling, and several are publicly wavering in the face of all this new evidence. But we are running out of time to stop McConnell from ramming through this rigged kangaroo court phony trial.

Will you chip in $3 a week so we can continue fully funding a full portfolio of campaigning work to demand McConnell hold a REAL impeachment trial with witnesses and evidence, make sure senators feel the heat to uphold their duty to the constitution, and fight until the very last vote is cast? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I'll chip in weekly to help keep MoveOn's impeachment campaign going for as long as it takes.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

McConnell's handling of the Trump impeachment trial has been so appalling that the ethics chief for former Republican President George H.W. Bush declared Mitch McConnell a "perjurer" as a result of McConnell's public admission that he would violate his oath to be an impartial juror in Trump's impeachment trial.4

To keep the pressure on, we're driving mobile billboards all over the states of the Republican senators most likely to flip on McConnell, holding high-visibility events outside their offices, generating thousands of phone calls to their offices, and so much more.

But we have very little time now to actually get the trial we need. If McConnell has his way, the entire impeachment trial could be over in the blink of an eye without a single witness called. Not only would Trump get away with his unbelievable abuses of power, it would set a precedent that effectively ends impeachment as a meaningful check on the presidency.

Will you chip in $3 a week to help demand a fair impeachment trial in the Senate? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I'll chip in weekly to make sure Trump is convicted and removed from office.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Let's remember what this is all about: The president of the United States was caught trading U.S. national security interests to smear a political opponent.

If not for the White House whistleblower and other government officials stepping in, Trump was prepared to let Vladimir Putin continue his invasion of Ukraine and destabilize the entire region—just to help smear Joe Biden and win re-election.

Just imagine if Harry Truman had teamed up with the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War to help win re-election. Or if FDR had secretly teamed up with the emperor of Japan to help Democrats win more seats in Congress during World War II. That's what we're talking about here, and if the Senate, after everything we've learned, turns a blind eye to these crimes, our democracy will be forever damaged.

We're prepared to go all out for as long as it takes to get the fair trial the American people deserve. Our democracy is at stake. Will you chip in weekly to help save it? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Yes, I'll chip in $3 a week to demand McConnell hold a REAL impeachment trial with witnesses and evidence to make sure Trump is convicted and removed from office.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Thanks for all you do.

When you sign up to make a weekly donation to help with MoveOn's impeachment work, your weekly contribution will be billed to your credit card once a month, starting today and repeating on the same day of every month going forward. To determine your monthly contribution amount, we will multiply the weekly amount of your donation by 4.34—the average number of weeks per month. We will contact you by email when Trump is no longer president to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation. You can also cancel or modify your recurring donation at any time. If you decrease or cancel your weekly donation partway through the month and would like to request a refund, please contact us at contrib_problem@moveon.org.

Contributions to MoveOn Civic Action are not tax-deductible for income tax purposes. This email was sent to Mar Alfaro on January 20, 2020.
