These billboards could be the end for Trump

Nancy Pelosi just announced that the House will vote tomorrow to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate. Donald Trump's impeachment trial will start in just six days.

Nancy Pelosi just announced that the House will vote tomorrow to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate. Donald Trump's impeachment trial will start in just six days.¹

Mitch McConnell is turning up the heat on his Republican colleagues in order to secure a blatantly rigged trial with no witnesses, not even John Bolton, who has openly volunteered to testify if called by the Senate.² To make sure McConnell doesn't get away with it, MoveOn and our partners, Daily Kos and Need to Impeach, are running billboards calling for a real trial in the states with senators who are most likely to break away from McConnell and demand a fair trial.

But our funding is about to run out, and the Senate trial will take weeks. Which is why we're asking you now:

Two-thirds of Americans oppose McConnell's plan for a rigged Senate trial with no witnesses.³ Even some Senate Republicans are starting to turn on Trump and McConnell.⁴

This is a moment when we need to walk and chew gum at the same time, but because the emergency work to stop a war with Iran was not part of our plan, MoveOn's budget is spread thin, and we need help from members like you, Mar, to keep firing on all cylinders.

We know that billboards are an effective pressure tactic, especially when they get local press in senators' home states. That's why we took it up a notch, and instead of creating a static billboard, we launched mobile billboards (billboards displayed on the sides of trucks) that can be driven around to multiple locations to create the most impact. And they are getting press and attention in seven states as you read this!

There's no way that McConnell will be able to convince people that the rigged trial he's planning is anything but a whitewash. 

We can do this! When the Senate votes on the rules that govern the impeachment trial, we need only 51 votes to block McConnell's kangaroo court, phony trial rules. That means if only four Republicans have the moral courage to stand up and demand it, witnesses will be called and questioned in Trump's trial.

Senator Lisa Murkowski has already hinted that she may be breaking away, expressing public concerns about McConnell's approach.⁵ Which opens the door for Senators Cory Gardner, Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, Martha McSally, Mitt Romney, and others who do not want to be seen as blind proponents of Trump's corruption.

Our billboards are running in McConnell's home state of Kentucky, plus Arizona, Iowa, Colorado, Maine, Utah, and North Carolina, but without additional funding, they'll soon go dark.

The skeletons in Donald Trump's closet

Mitch McConnell is trying to move forward with a blatantly rigged trial with no witnesses, not even Bolton or other officials closest to Trump such as Mick Mulvaney.

After the blockbuster impeachment testimony by Gordon Sondland, Fiona Hill, and the other witnesses in the House, John Bolton's lawyer released a statement saying that his client could speak to "many relevant meetings and conversations that have not yet been discussed."¹

As Donald Trump's former national security adviser, Bolton was privy to a lot. And now he's volunteering to testify in Trump's Senate impeachment trial.

But Mitch McConnell is trying to move forward with a blatantly rigged trial with no witnesses, not even Bolton or other officials closest to Trump such as Mick Mulvaney.

Imagine you are called for jury duty, but when you arrive, you are informed that you must decide on the defendant's guilt or innocence without hearing from a single witness in the case. That is precisely the kangaroo court system that McConnell is attempting to create for Trump's impeachment trial.

We cannot let that happen.

Which is why, on Tuesday, MoveOn and our partners at Daily Kos and Need to Impeach began running mobile billboards (billboards on the sides of trucks that can be driven around to different locations for maximum visibility) in six different states with Republican senators most likely to break away from McConnell and call for a fair trial as well as in McConnell's home state of Kentucky. The billboards got tons of attention, with television and press coverage in places like Maine, Arizona, and Colorado.

But our funding for the billboards ran out yesterday—and since we do not yet know when a vote will take place, we desperately need your help to continue this tactic to keep the pressure up until McConnell calls a vote.

Although conviction requires a two-thirds majority, a vote on the rules that govern the impeachment trial requires only 51 votes, meaning only four Republicans need to have the moral courage to stand up and demand that, just like any other trial conducted in the United States legal system, witnesses must be called and questioned in Trump's impeachment.

And if we can finally hear from crucial direct witnesses to Trump's crimes, like Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and Bolton, it will make it much, much more difficult for anyone in the Senate to vote to acquit Trump.

He does not even attempt to hide the fact that no matter how reasonable, how bipartisan, or how good for the country it is, he will block any legislation proposed by Democrats.

And he will use any dirty trick in the book to protect Trump and hold on to power.

It is up to us to show him that he won't get away with it, just as we did when he tried to overturn the Affordable Care Act.

Yesterday, we rose up together to say #NoWarWithIran at more than 350 events in 46 states across the country, just as the House was voting to rein in Donald Trump's war powers. We made it clear: There is an anti-war majority in this country, and we will speak out for peace and justice.

MoveOn was built as an anti-war organization when we fought against the war in Iraq. We were opposed to war in 2003; we stand opposed to war in Iran today; and we will keep up the pressure to stop Trump's war with Iran and end the endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

At our rally at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., moments before the House voted to rein in Trump's reckless military action against Iran, Senator Jeff Merkley asked, "Can you come back when the Senate is voting, in about ten days, to make it clear?

To be clear: The Senate has the opportunity and ability to save countless lives by restraining Trump's military action. The House took decisive action and voted in favor of the war powers resolution to end Trump's strikes against Iran. Just as we were about to hit send on this email about nationwide anti-war protests Thursday, alarming news broke that Iran has launched an attack on the American al-Asad air base in Iraq in response to Donald Trump's reckless, illegal provocations. News is continuing to develop, but it's already clear that the following email has become even more important.
