Mitch McConnell's in deep, deep trouble
We all know how important it is to beat Donald Trump in 2020. But there's another race in 2020 that is almost as important—and now looks even more winnable: defeating Mitch McConnell.
Dear MoveOn member,
We all know how important it is to beat Donald Trump in 2020.
But there's another race in 2020 that is almost as important—and now looks even more winnable: defeating Mitch McConnell.
Polls show that McConnell is the #1 most unpopular member of the entire U.S. Senate, with more than 60% of the voters in McConnell's home state of Kentucky saying that "it's time for someone new" to represent the state.1
Here's the challenge: Kentucky won't be one of the key battleground states in the presidential election. So if we're going to make a serious effort to beat McConnell, we'll need to staff up a whole additional campaign infrastructure just for his race—without sacrificing resources we need to defeat Trump.
We would love to take out McConnell, but we need to know right now if MoveOn members will be willing to donate the kind of ongoing, consistent money it'll take to staff up a campaign and win. So we've set a goal of bringing in 8,333 new monthly donors by June 30—the second-quarter fundraising deadline—to show that there is enough support from MoveOn members to take on this work. Will you chip in $5 a month?
Yes, I'll chip in monthly to help defeat Mitch McConnell.
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
McConnell openly brags that he's the "grim reaper" for popular House-passed bills protecting voting rights and cracking down on corruption in Washington.
Net Neutrality is supported by more than 80% of voters, but McConnell won't even allow it to come up for a vote.2
How about protections for the Dreamers, which are supported by more than 75% of voters? That passed the House of Representatives, but McConnell won't allow a vote in the Senate on that, either.3
But McConnell's most lasting harm is because of his hijacking of the Supreme Court. He is almost single-handedly responsible for stealing Merrick Garland's Supreme Court seat. Then, he changed the rules of the Senate to be able to ram through Neil Gorsuch. And when Christine Blasey Ford spoke out about being sexually assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh, McConnell made sure she'd be ignored and Kavanaugh confirmed.
Now, McConnell's Supreme Court is tearing through one decades-old precedent after another, and it appears to be only a matter of time before Roe v. Wade is gone.
Let's be clear: No race is going to be a bigger priority in 2020 than beating Trump. But even if that happens, as long as McConnell remains in charge of the Senate, we will make no progress on progressive priorities.
If we can add 8,333 new monthly donors by the June 30 fundraising deadline, it will show that MoveOn members are ready to put up the funding we'll need to both beat Trump and take on McConnell. So, what do you say? Will you chip in $5 a month to ditch Mitch?
Yes, I'll chip in monthly to help defeat Mitch McConnell.
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you do.

We need the 2020 candidates and DNC to commit to an entire debate on environmental policies.
Eddie,
This is actor and activist Mark Ruffalo—and I'm writing to you about an urgent action we need to take to move forward solutions to stop this climate crisis. DNC Chairman Tom Perez announced that the DNC is unwilling to hold a climate debate for 2020 candidates despite growing public pressure and vocal support from many candidates including Julián Castro, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren. We cannot accept this as the final word. The climate crisis touches every person on the planet, and the need for a real debate about the problem and solutions has never been more urgent.
Dear fellow MoveOn member,
We are writing on behalf of Youth Climate Strike because we need your signature on a brand-new petition.
We helped to organize student climate strikes around the United States. It was so inspiring to see all of the positive responses and the media traction that we received for our kickoff strike on March 15, 2019, and therefore we are branching out and announcing our new campaign today to call upon the 2020 presidential candidates and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to commit to a debate or forum entirely around environmental issues.
Sign our petition to support a #ClimateDebate.
You may have heard of the Youth Climate Strike on NPR or in The New York Times. Our first strike on March 15, 2019 was part of a massive global day of action where young people in 120+ countries came together to demand action on climate change. As we approach the 2020 election, we recognize that time is running out to curb the worst effects of climate change, and therefore we believe it is the best time to ask the presidential candidates some tough but important questions about climate change and environmental policy. Furthermore, we will continue to strike to demand action from incumbent politicians and those that are running in 2019 and 2020.
Let's ensure environmental issues—climate change, access to clean water, environmental racism, and everything in between—that disproportionately impact people of color and working-class folks are given the serious attention they deserve.
Let's be sure we hear how candidates plan to hold companies accountable for polluting our water and air, and let's ask them what they think about opening up federal land to fracking, drilling, and trophy hunting.
Let's have an open mind as they discuss the ways we can shift to renewable energy while stressing equity and a just transition for frontline communities, specifically communities of color, low-income communities, and communities most reliant on fossil fuels.
The United Nations estimates that 62 million people worldwide were affected by extreme weather fueled by climate change.1 This is not ok.
Thank you for your support.

Sign this petition re: Amazon packaging
Dear fellow MoveOn member,
Amazon is one of the largest companies in the world, and its whole business is built on e-commerce. That means nearly everything they sell is packaged and shipped to people. Do you know where millions of packages, Bubble Wrap, tape, and more end up? Landfills and waste dumps.
Climate change is threatening this generation and many to come, and corporations must minimize waste and their carbon footprint on the environment. Much of the plastic and cardboard packaging that Amazon uses to sustain their business doesn't get reused and ends up in landfills. Even when it is recycled, the materials Amazon uses aren't sortable and end up getting caught in machinery. Remember that big, bubble-lined envelope they used to ship you something as small as a tube of Chap Stick? That package is likely in a landfill right now.
Amazon needs to switch to paper envelopes/packaging to minimize their carbon footprint.
Sign this petition demanding that Amazon switch their packaging to paper instead of plastic and cardboard.
According to The Washington Post, "The problem with the plastic mailers is twofold: They need to be recycled separately, and if they end up in the usual stream, they gum up recycling systems and prevent larger bundles of materials from being recycled. Environmental advocates say Amazon, as the industry giant, needs to do a much better job of encouraging consumers to recycle the plastic mailers by providing more education and alternative places to bring that plastic for recycling."1
Amazon has an opportunity to set the standard for environmentally friendly packaging. They are one of the the biggest corporations in the world, and if they take the importance of being conscious of their carbon footprint seriously, they will influence other e-commerce businesses to follow suit. We demand that they use paper envelopes to minimize their impact on climate change and environmental damage immediately!

Sign this petition re: Trump's golf course
Dear fellow MoveOn member,
In 2014, the Professional Golfers' Association of America awarded Trump Bedminster the 2022 PGA Championship. Given Trump's disdain for basic civility and the laws of our nation—as well as chronic lying, philandering, corruption, racism, sexism, and fear-mongering—it is imperative the PGA move the 2022 PGA Championship from Trump Beminster. Instead, they should award the PGA Championship to a more deserving golf course that celebrates equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Trump has made political gains by dividing this country, pushing an anti-immigrant agenda, and spewing hateful rhetoric. We cannot enable this behavior and allow him to have a broader platform. Trump should not be allowed to host a prestigious golf tournament at his National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The PGA should find a better golf course that will be open and accessible to all.

Dream and Promise Act—and what's next
Dear MoveOn member,
The Democratic-led House of Representatives just passed the most expansive legislation ever to protect immigrant youth—the Dream and Promise Act. This hard-fought milestone was won by immigrant youth who have refused to be silenced by the Trump administration. And MoveOn members like you, Eddie, have been there to back up the leaders of this vital movement every step of the way.
As we celebrate this important milestone, it's important to step back and acknowledge the work that got us here—and to use this momentum to push Congress to stop funding Donald Trump's brutal deportation force, which is attacking immigrants at the border and across the country.
The Dream and Promise Act lays the groundwork for the welcoming America that we are working toward building, but immigrants are facing attacks every day, and need us to fight back.
Will you sign this petition to demand Congress Defund Hate and ensure that the deportation force Trump uses to terrorize immigrant and refugee communities is held accountable?
In 2017, when Trump ended the successful Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program—which granted legal status to young immigrants who had grown up in the United States to live, work, study, build homes in, and contribute to their communities—he threw 800,000 people and their families into chaos and uncertainty.
But brave activists continued to organize in the streets, in the courts, and in the halls of Congress. Here are some of the ways in which MoveOn members have joined this monumental campaign:
- More than 250,000 MoveOn members, from all walks of life, signed a petition calling for an immediate passing of a Dream Act, joining allies in a 1-million signature delivery to the White House.
- MoveOn members joined events around the country, drove tens of thousands of calls to Congress, shared original videos that were seen tens of millions of times, and funded polling to show that a majority of all voters—Democrats, Republicans and independents—support Dreamers.
- And in 2017, when Trump and Republicans shut down the government over his attacks on Dreamers, we stood with Dreamers to demand Democrats stay strong.
- Then, through 2018, we endorsed candidates for Congress who were clear in their support for Dreamers—and in the historic election last November, swept in a new Democratic majority capable of passing this important legislation.
- This year, MoveOn members raised nearly $70,000 to help DACA recipients pay their expensive DACA renewal application fees—providing direct support to immigrant youth who must pay $495 every two years to renew.
-
And just this week, MoveOn members in key districts called their representatives to defeat a ploy by the Republicans to insert an amendment at the last minute that was designed to split the Democrats and kill the bill. After hearing from us, Reps. Abby Finkenauer (IA-01), Cindy Axne (IA-03), Andy Kim (NJ-03), Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02), Antonio Delgado (NY-19), Conor Lamb (PA-17), Elaine Luria (VA-02), and Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) voted the right way. And the final bill passed with every Democrat voting to extend protections to Dreamers.
Now, Trump and Republicans in Congress are continuing to push for more funding for out-of-control federal agencies such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Border Patrol) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which are responsible for countless human rights abuses, including the deaths of at least six children in their custody in the last six months.
Our work to stand with immigrants and asylum seekers will happen on many fronts in the next two years:
We need to continue to fight for the Dream and Promise Act.
We need to block the Republicans' racist, xenophobic agenda—and that means continuing to defund the agencies carrying out Trump's anti-immigrant acts of terror, including the horrific detention and deportation machine of Border Patrol and ICE.
And we need to elect a new president and new senators ready to stand with Dreamers—and who see our nation as a place of respect and dignity for all immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.
Let's take a moment to celebrate this historic moment, and then ready ourselves for the considerable work ahead.
Thanks for everything you do.
