"Brutal" day for Trump rocks White House

Dear MoveOn member,

The first day of public impeachment hearings was "brutal" and "damning" for Donald Trump, according to Politico.¹

The top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine has revealed that Trump was directly involved in bribing Ukraine into making up dirt on Joe Biden to help him win re-election. Trump's Republican defenders have no response but to push bizarre conspiracy theories.

Momentum for impeachment is building an unstoppable head of steam. But if impeachment passes the House on a straight party-line vote, it will be dead on arrival in the Senate.

We've made a list of the House Republicans who are most likely to crack first—Republicans with a track record of crossing party lines as well as Republicans who are retiring and may be willing to challenge their party leadership. And to turn up the heat, we're hitting these House members with ads, calls, and events—and we're considering putting up billboards highlighting the most damning testimony against Trump from the impeachment hearings.

We've designed the billboards. And we'll put them up if we can raise $100,000 by the end of the week. Will you donate $3 to help turn up the heat on key House Republicans and put up "impeach Trump" billboards in key districts around the country?

The mounting evidence against Trump has become so damning that even Republican voters have started to turn on him, with a majority of Americans supporting the impeachment inquiry.²

But on the first day of public testimony, things got much, much worse for Trump:

New evidence was revealed showing Trump's direct involvement in bribing Ukraine.
The top U.S. diplomat said that, by holding up key military aid, Trump was putting Ukraine in serious danger of Russian aggression.
Witnesses said that even Trump loyalist Gordon Sondland admitted that Trump had zero interest in actual corruption in Ukraine; his only interest was dirt on the Bidens.
Republicans falsely claimed that Ukraine, not Russia, meddled in the U.S. election, and they offered no defense except wild attacks at the witnesses and the White House whistleblower.

These bombshell revelations are just the beginning. But Republicans are terrified of angering their base, and none dare stick their head up first. The only House Republican who has come out for impeachment so far actually left the party to become an Independent. That's why the key to breaking the wall of GOP opposition is to just get the first one or two Republicans to break from the pack. Once that happens, the roof could cave in.

We're launching an all-out effort to convince the most vulnerable and likely-to-flip Republicans to admit the truth and support impeachment, and we're starting with billboards in their home districts. Then we'll turn up the heat with protests, days of action, and a flood of phone calls to Capitol Hill.

Trump is on the ropes, but we need to keep the pressure on. Will you chip in $3 to help impeach Trump?

Call today: Congress must blunt Trump's attacks on immigrants

The Trump administration continues to commit atrocities on our southern border: from forcing asylum seekers to remain in Mexico with no rights or protections to continuing to separate families. And yet Congress continues to throw money at the agencies enacting these atrocities.

This endless supply of funding to unaccountable agencies has got to stop. Tell Representative Gregory W. Meeks to #DefundHate by cutting funds to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the agencies responsible for executing Donald Trump's attacks on immigrants.

Government funding runs out next week, on November 21. Already, Congress is discussing a short-term continuing resolution to keep the doors open a little longer, while a longer-term bill is negotiated. Trump has demanded this bill include "anomalies" to increase funds to ICE and CBP, even higher than the billion-dollar increase they've received under Trump.

This is unacceptable: Congress must cut funds to these out-of-control agencies and hold them accountable.

Call today, while budget negotiations are ongoing, to demand Rep. Meeks work to reject increases in funds for ICE and CBP and insist on funding cuts.

Terrifying new poll

Dear MoveOn member,

We're in trouble, and it's time to wake up.

In our most recent survey, 57.2% of MoveOn members said that they believe that Donald Trump will be defeated in 2020. But new polling tells a very different story that should send chills down our spines.

According to a new poll from The New York Times, the presidential election in 2020, just like in 2016, will most likely be decided by a few hundred thousand votes spread across the critical swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona—as those states will tip the Electoral College to the winner. New data shows a statistical dead heat or even an advantage for Trump in every single one of these states.¹

It gets worse. Even as Trump's national approval rating has cratered, his edge in the states that will likely decide the election has grown since 2016.² And if you think that it's still too early to rely on polling data, here's the harsh truth: In the last three presidential elections, head-to-head polling one year out from Election Day has been just as close to the final result as polls taken the day before the election.³

These polls are a stark reminder that we cannot rely on Trump's unpopularity, cruelty, and ineptitude to hand us an election victory. 2020 is likely to be the most hard-fought and important election in our lifetimes, and there is not a moment to waste.

MoveOn is ready to meet this moment and fight hard every day until the election, and it is why we are preparing to reveal the details of the largest election campaign in our 21-year history. But we're behind our budget goal for the month and need to sign up 1,942 new monthly donors to close the gap. That's why MoveOn is putting an extra focus on critical Senate elections in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Maine, and more—to flip the Senate blue on the same night that we defeat Trump.
Inspiring and mobilizing progressive voters to turn out in droves on Election Day. It's not enough to just register voters, those voters need to get excited about the candidates they are voting for and feel that their votes will matter, which is why MoveOn is working on innovative tactics for volunteers to connect with potential voters directly, including sending hundreds of millions of text messages, to make sure they are energized and ready to vote to defeat Trump and the GOP.
Directly raising millions of dollars for inspiring, progressive candidates up and down the ballot. In 2018, MoveOn members came together to donate small amounts that REALLY added up for candidates across the country running bold, progressive campaigns. We'll dial up that program in 2020 to help fuel the campaigns of progressive champions fighting for an agenda to make America a country where everyone can thrive.

There are a few other aspects to our program that we can't announce just yet—including a big, new secret weapon that could make all the difference next year. But in order to run on all cylinders for the next year, we need to close our budget gap by signing up 1,942 new monthly donors before the end of November.

Kick the murderous Saudi dictator off Uber's board of directors (petition)

Dear MoveOn member,

In a new interview with "Axios on HBO," Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called the murder of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi "a mistake" and compared it to Uber mistakes with self-driving cars.

Khashoggi's death wasn't a mistake—it was murder, and the CIA has concluded that Saudi Arabia's dictator was directly involved in Khashoggi's murder.¹

Tell Uber that it's completely inappropriate to be working hand-in-hand with this brutal regime—even going as far as giving a representative from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund a seat on its board of directors.

Uber must remove Saudi dictatorship from the Uber board and cancel the dictator's investment.

Saudi Arabia is ruled by a brutal dictatorship that has invested $3.5 billion in Uber, and its representative sits on the Uber board of directors.

The person responsible for Khashoggi's murder is Saudi dictator Mohammed bin Salman, one of Uber's biggest shareholders through Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund called Public Investment Fund.

Facing public backlash, the Uber CEO later backtracked from his comments to Axios, issuing a written statement: "I said something in the moment that I do not believe. When it comes to Jamal Khashoggi, his murder was reprehensible and should not be forgotten or excused."²

So then why is Yasir Al-Rumayyan still on the Uber board of directors? Al-Rumayyan is the managing director of the Saudi dictatorship's Public Investment Fund.

Uber must remove Saudi dictatorship from the Uber board and end the dictatorship's investments in the company. In addition to murdering Khashoggi, Saudi dictatorship has slaughtered thousands of civilians in Yemen, imprisoned women's rights activists, and jailed countless nonviolent human rights reformers.

Add your name: Protect Oak Flat

Dear MoveOn member,

My name is Reverend William J. Barber II, of the Poor People's Campaign. I'm a preacher—and I've dedicated my life to the pursuit of social and economic justice as part of my faith and a moral obligation to counter injustice.

I'm writing to you because, unless we act, one of the most sacred places of the Apache Nation in Arizona will be destroyed by Resolution Copper, a corporation that is planning to create a crater below Oak Flat two miles wide and 1,000 feet deep.¹ To Christians and Jews, this would feel like a desecration of Mt. Sinai.

Will you sign the petition in solidarity with the leaders of the Apache-Stronghold and demand Congress do everything in its power to stop the destruction of Oak Flat?

We demand Congress return the full rights and religious protections to the Apache of Oak Flat in recognition of their religious freedom and stop the destruction of Oak Flat.

When I first visited the Apache Nation in Arizona years ago, I heard how the Apaches, a people who had lived in the hills, were forced onto a reservation down in the river basin. And then the Army, at night, opened the river, flooded the river basin, in an attempt to wipe them out.

Their story—and their trauma—is not isolated. First Nations, the indigenous Nations who once populated this land, were almost wiped out in the Indian Wars of the first two hundred years of what would become the United States. And these attacks, despite the resiliency of First Nation tribes, continue today.

Oak Flat is a sacred place to the Apache people. But the U.S. Forest Service has moved forward with an environmental impact statement on this proposed plan from Resolution Copper—and has refused to consider the Apaches' religious freedom claim, which would stop this destructive mining project.²

I'm writing to you as a preacher, hoping you will join me in demanding Congress stop this sale and condemn this immoral, racist, and unconstitutional seizure and sale of Oak Flat.

NYC subway system (petition)

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm actor and activist Cynthia Nixon. I'm writing to ask you to sign this petition to Governor Cuomo after multiple videos and photos have recently emerged showing police officers tasering, tackling, holding down, drawing guns, and in some cases, punching Black and brown people in the subway.

This is the result of an overly aggressive and unjust crackdown on "fare evasion," which has primarily targeted Black and brown people in low-income communities. And it comes on the heels of the announcement that the governor and the MTA intend to put 500 more state police—without body cameras—into the NYC subway system.

Instead of investing the millions needed for our crumbling subway, Governor Cuomo wants to invest in 500 police officers to continue his MTA fare evasion crackdown.

Poverty is not a crime. The fare evasion crackdown must stop immediately.

As part of the crackdown, NYPD officers have been stationed in large numbers outside and inside of train stations in low-income, Black, and brown neighborhoods. This comes as no surprise, as it follows the pattern of Black and brown communities across the country being surveilled, targeted, and subjected to police abuse and excessive violence.

But this excessive use of force by the police in the subway must stop immediately—which won't happen if Governor Cuomo and the MTA move forward with their current plans.

In one video, police officers draw their guns on a young Black man in a crowded subway car for presumably having evaded a $2.75 fare. In another image, an officer is holding down a young Black man who has been tasered. We should not taser or arrest someone for being unable to pay a $2.75 train fare. We do not need more state police with less accountability patrolling our subways.

What we need is for Governor Cuomo and the MTA to stop criminalizing poverty and to stop trying to raise money for our dilapidated train system on the backs of low-income communities and communities of color. We need Governor Cuomo to take the funding planned for hiring 500 new officers and invest it, and millions more, toward bringing the subway into a state of good repair.
