Please, not another shooting

We'll never pass common sense gun laws until we can show there's a political price for standing with the NRA—and we have a great chance to do just that in a key Congressional race two weeks from now in Maine.

Can you chip in $3 to help elect a MoveOn-endorsed progressive over an NRA Democrat?

Chip in $3

Dear MoveOn member,

Another mass shooting. Another wave of national grieving. And once again it appears that Congress will do absolutely nothing.

Enough is enough. We HAVE to break the logjam on guns in Congress before the next mass shooting. And it turns out we have a rare chance right now to begin to turn the tide in Washington.

Here's the situation: There's an open Congressional seat in Maine where a progressive Democrat is locked in a neck-and-neck primary against a candidate with an NRA score of 100%—and the election is just two weeks away.1

It's just one race—not enough to fix everything that's broken in Washington. But if we can show that there's a political price to pay for standing with the NRA, then we can begin to create a political climate where common sense action is possible.

Can you chip in $3 to help a MoveOn-endorsed progressive defeat an NRA Democrat?

Yes, I'll donate $3.

The MoveOn-endorsed candidate in the race is a former state senator named Emily Cain, and the NRA candidate is named Troy Jackson.

Both of them were in the state legislature after Newtown when a bill was proposed that would have simply imposed a $1,000 fine on gun sellers who are caught illegally selling guns to people who who have been involuntarily committed to a mental hospital. Troy Jackson voted against even that—and the bill was defeated.2

Sen. Jackson is also opposed by the League of Conservation Voters because of his opposition to global warming legislation, and he's voted wrong on abortion and marriage equality as well.3

The problem in Maine and across the country is that politicians believe that they can't win if they stand up to the NRA. This is our chance to prove that there's a steep political price to pay for Democrats who stand with the NRA against common sense gun laws.

Thanks for all you do.
