Call the Senate now: Stop Trump's Supreme Court nominee

No Supreme Court hearing while Trump is being investigated The confirmation hearing for Trump's ultra-right-wing Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, began yesterday—the same day that we learned that Trump and his cronies have been under FBI investigation since July of 2016.

Dear MoveOn member,

The confirmation hearing for Trump’s ultra-right-wing Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, began Monday—the same day that we learned that Trump and his cronies have been under FBI investigation since July of 2016. The Senate and House have a responsibility to stop the Trump presidency in its tracks until a full investigation reveals the extent of Trump's relationship with Russian efforts to meddle in our elections. That means no consideration of a Supreme Court justice.

Senate Democrats can—and they must—filibuster. If they don’t stop Gorsuch, the dangerous agenda of the Trump era won’t just last a few years—it will live on for decades on the Supreme Court. And as more comes out about Trump's relationship to Russia, it will be too late to reverse this appointment.

But right now, too many Senate Democrats aren't saying clearly that they'll do everything in their power to block Gorsuch. That’s why all Senate Democrats and Independents need to hear from their constituents today.

Will you pick up the phone and urge Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand to filibuster Gorsuch?

Here's where to call:

  • Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
  • Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

When you call, say something like:

"I'm a constituent and a voter from New York, and I'm calling to urge Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand to support a filibuster against Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court while a cloud of criminal investigations hangs over Trump's ties to Russia. We can’t afford a Court that would codify Trump’s anti-woman, pro-business, anti-worker agenda."

Gorsuch is even more conservative than the late Justice Antonin Scalia.1 His track record as a judge makes clear that he consistently sided with corporations—over women, over workers, and over people in general. Look at his record:

  • He supported the Hobby Lobby decision, which allowed employers to prevent their employees’ health insurance from covering birth control—in the name of religious freedom.
  • He supported rulings that threaten the environment, American workers, and safe food and medicine.
  • He supported corporations over people by saying that it should be more difficult for consumers to sue large corporations for fraud and wrongdoing.

Gorsuch has opposed LGBTQ rights, civil rights, immigrants’ rights, and disability rights. His potential impact on the Supreme Court would be devastating. But many Senate Democrats have yet to announce whether they will support a filibuster. They’re under intense pressure to let him sail through: Republicans are flooding the airwaves with an eight-figure advertising campaign to lift up their nominee in states with vulnerable Democrats.2

It’s up to us to make sure they know that while special-interest money may side with Gorsuch, their constituents oppose him.

The early days of the Trump administration have already been filled with unconstitutional actions and attacks on an independent judiciary. And it seems very likely that significant parts of Trump’s agenda, such as his Muslim ban, will make it to the Supreme Court, where we need to ensure independent justices act as a block on his attacks against our communities and our Constitution.

And now, amidst more revelations about the investigation into Trump and Russia, it's imperative we put a stop to his nominations until a full investigation gets to the truth.

All Democrats and Independents need to say no to Trump's agenda, no to his nominee, and no to a right-wing Supreme Court, using every tool at their disposal, including the filibuster. This is the moment for the Democrats to stand strong. Make sure they hear from us and know we're watching.

Thanks for all you do.
