Dear MoveOn member,
The official results of our 2020 straw poll are in: MoveOn members' support is up for grabs and the Democratic field is wide open. MoveOn members are looking for candidates who inspire us with with a deep progressive vision to move our country forward and are invested in an agenda that makes the connection between economic, racial, and social justice.
It may seem like the 2020 election is a long way off, but as soon as the clock strikes twelve on January 1, the countdown will begin for Democrats to announce their campaigns and start building the support they need to win on November 3, 2020.
This could happen fast—remember, Barack Obama announced his campaign on February 10, 2007. The 2020 campaign starts now, and MoveOn is already hard at work to put big, transformative ideas at the center of the primary to inspire and motivate Americans to vote and build a country that works for all of us.
To kickstart this process, MoveOn is organizing the Big Ideas Series, a set of events in early primary states where we will challenge candidates and other progressive political leaders to share their vision for the future of our country. This will be one of the first chances for all of us to hear directly from potential 2020 candidates and set the agenda for the 2020 race.
MoveOn members expressed support for Beto O'Rourke (15.6%), Joe Biden (14.9%), Bernie Sanders (13.1%), Kamala Harris (10%), Elizabeth Warren (6.4%), and more—but more votes were cast for "Don't Know" than any single candidate.1 However, two-thirds of MoveOn members agreed that what is most important is a candidate who inspires the public with deep progressive values and will move us towards a more progressive future where everyone can thrive, giving a clear roadmap for candidates to pursue if they want to win over MoveOn members.
The 2020 primary process will be long, and it is critical that we set a foundation early for a big, bold agenda that will inspire people across the country and give us something to vote FOR, not against.
Think about big ideas that have galvanized the electorate over the past two years. The $15 minimum wage. Legalization of marijuana. Voting rights for formerly incarcerated people. Single-payer health care.
These are ideas that have gone from the fringe to the heart of our political discourse. And we're seeing big ideas like a Green New Deal gaining traction as inspiring new members of the House of Representatives head to Washington.
The Big Ideas Series will promote ideas like these in the months ahead and will help shape the landscape for dynamic political fights in 2019 and a transformative presidential campaign in 2020.
We know that our straw poll results are having an impact, and that we have a real chance to influence the tenor and focus of the primary season, because within moments of the release of the results, NBC News, MSNBC, The Hill, and others were all breaking headlines about the importance of the results.2,3
We can't let this opportunity slip by.
Candidates considering a run for president in 2020 know that they need the support of the millions of MoveOn members across the country that will serve as their grassroots base. Just like we did in 2018, MoveOn members will be on the ground, volunteering, making calls, organizing our communities, and galvanizing voters through the primaries and general election.
We must demand big ideas from them and an agenda that will take our country forward. The Big Ideas Series will demand just such proposals and will give voters across the nation the chance to hear a real alternative to the politics of hate, fear, and division peddled by Trump and his GOP cronies.
We need your ideas! Click here to share your input for the Big Ideas Series!
Thanks for all you do.
