It's straight out of a movie: The villains are holding the public option hostage, and the clock is ticking down. Conservative Democrats are about to kill the public option once and for all!
Where's Superman when you need him?
Well, Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer could save the day. With 60 Democrats, the Senate needs the votes of public option supporters just as much as conservative votes.
All it takes is one senator to say they'll only vote for a bill with a public option.
We need to pass real health care reform this year. Can you urge Sens. Gillibrand and Schumer to step forward and win the fight for a public option? Clicking here will add your name to our petition:
http://pol.moveon.org/publicoptionheroes/o.pl?id=18193-10220574-RYirLEx&t=3The petition says, "Please announce that you won't settle for anything less than a real public option. Hundreds of millions of Americans are counting on you to win the public option."
We'll all support senators who make this commitment. A decisive majority of Americans—including 86% of Democrats—want a public option in health care this year.1 But so far, conservative Democrats have the upper hand because they're the ones threatening to block health care reform to stop the public option.
In just days, the Senate may announce the official death of the public option to appease these conservative obstructionists.2 We don't have much time to stop them.
But one senator could rescue the public option. If Sens. Gillibrand and Schumer say they'll only vote for a bill with a public option, everything changes: The White House and Senate leaders will have to negotiate a real solution, one that represents the vast majority of Americans who want a public option. The vote is so close, every Democratic senator's vote is needed.
Sign our petition asking Sens. Gillibrand and Schumer to stand up and win this fight for the public option—for America. Clicking here will add your name:
