A commemoration of Roe v. Wade and a reminder to not give up the fight

Dear MoveOn member,

It's a new decade, but the same old fights for our reproductive rights are not over. Across the country, anti-abortion politicians are trying to legislate abortion out of existence. From 2011 to 2017, state legislatures have passed nearly 400 abortion restrictions.¹ These laws include everything from bans on specific methods of abortion care to biased counseling and parental involvement requirements to onerous regulations—such as widening the hallways—that are aimed at shutting down clinics and making patients jump through unnecessary and often humiliating hoops.

We're fighting back. Last year, MoveOn members helped ensure access to safe abortion and reproductive health care by donating $208,715 to the Yellowhammer Fund and $183,000 to the Gateway Fund, the abortion funds for Alabama and Missouri, respectively. We joined with our partners at Planned Parenthood and NARAL for more than 300 #StopTheBans rallies across the country to tell state lawmakers to end these attacks on our reproductive rights, and we raised $262,850 for Planned Parenthood when it came under direct attack from the Trump administration this fall.  

The impact on the state level is that these laws restricting access fall hardest on low-income communities, people of color, and the LGBTQ and other marginalized communities. Today is the 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Abortion has been recognized as constitutional right in the U.S. for 47 years, but right now, this right is under attack like never before. 

We're on the eve of one of the largest national attacks on reproductive rights. On March 4, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a case on a Louisiana law that, if allowed to take effect, would decimate abortion access statewide and leave Louisiana with only one abortion clinic. And, under the new conservative court, the case could set a dangerous precedent that challenges our rights established in Roe v. Wade. Abortion rights are meaningless without access, and we cannot afford to be silent.  

So we're getting prepared, and we want to make sure everyone is ready to mobilize if needed. MoveOn has joined the #MyRightMyDecision coalition made up of national and grassroots reproductive rights and justice organizations from all across the country who are fighting back against the attacks on our bodily autonomy.²

Keeping abortion safe, legal, and accessible is about more than just health care. Watch "Ours to Tell" from We Testify and Planned Parenthood, a short film that shows what empowered lives people can live when they've had the chance to make their own reproductive choices.

Today, in honor of Roe's anniversary, MoveOn took part in a Twitter chat with the #MyRightMyDecision coalition. We answered questions about abortion access across the country, and included information about how you can get involved to help protect reproductive rights. We need only four Republican senators to insist on a fair trial to break through Mitch McConnell's stonewalling, and several are publicly wavering in the face of all this new evidence.

Over the last week, there's been an avalanche of damning evidence against Donald Trump.

On the Rachel Maddow Show, Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas publicly confirmed that Trump directly approved efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate the Bidens.¹

Maddow also exposed text messages suggesting that Trump's team had Marie Yovanovitch, the then-U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, under surveillance as part of an effort to smear her and "get her out of the way."²

And the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office concluded that the Trump administration's withholding of the aid to Ukraine violated the law.³

McConnell's handling of the Trump impeachment trial has been so appalling that the ethics chief for former Republican President George H.W. Bush declared Mitch McConnell a "perjurer" as a result of McConnell's public admission that he would violate his oath to be an impartial juror in Trump's impeachment trial.⁴

To keep the pressure on, we're driving mobile billboards all over the states of the Republican senators most likely to flip on McConnell, holding high-visibility events outside their offices, generating thousands of phone calls to their offices, and so much more.

Let's remember what this is all about: The president of the United States was caught trading U.S. national security interests to smear a political opponent.

They might die in an ICE prison (sign the petition)

Add your name to demand the release of the five South Asian men hunger striking in detention at an ICE facility in Jena, Louisiana.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Rebekah Entralgo of Freedom for Immigrants, and I started a petition to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL), which says:

Immediately release the five South Asian men hunger striking in detention for more than 75 days in Jena, Louisiana. Each of them have formal sponsors in the United States committed to supporting and housing them while they fight their asylum case.

Five South Asian men have reached the 75th day of a hunger strike in the GEO Group-operated LaSalle Detention Facility in Jena, Louisiana, where they have been subjected to the tortuous procedure of forced-hydration and force-feeding.¹ According to medical professionals, 75 days without adequate nutrition is when vital organs begin to fail.

The growing number of hunger strikes in ICE prisons across the country are no coincidence. It is indicative of complete disbelief in a fair legal process and the lengths ICE is willing to go to indefinitely detain them. Some of these men have been locked up for nearly two years. We are deeply concerned that ICE appears willing to let these men die in detention to make an example of them rather than be released to the community, where each man has family or close friends willing to provide housing and support.

Tell ICE to immediately release these men while their asylum cases are processed.

Freedom for Immigrants (FFI) has filed complaints with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL) on behalf of the five men, demanding DHS address the systemic civil rights violations the men have faced under ICE custody. Freedom for Immigrants and Detention Watch Network (DWN), South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), local advocates, and medical professionals in the Louisiana area are warning that the men are on the brink of death and call for their immediate release.

Additionally, independent physicians cannot conduct an assessment of the medical treatment these men are receiving while in detention, because ICE is violating its own policies which say people in detention have the right to independent medical evaluation.²

This is urgent. Currently, ICE is force-hydrating one man and force-feeding two men hunger striking at Jena LaSalle Detention Facility. Force-feeding is a painful process that involves physically restraining the hunger striker and forcing fluid through nasal passages with tubes. The practice has been denounced by the United Nations, Physicians for Human Rights, the American Medical Association, and the World Medical Association.

Parnas went on to confirm that "the only motivation" for the smear campaign and eventual firing of then-Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch was to get her out of the way, since she refused to participate in bribing the Ukrainian government to help rig the 2020 election.⁴ 

And although Parnas claimed that he never believed the threats from Trump donor Robert Hyde that he had Yovanovitch under surveillance in Ukraine and said cryptically that he could hire someone "to help if we/you like the price," the government of Ukraine is taking these threats seriously and has announced that they are opening an investigation to determine if these claims were true, and the State Department finally relented on Friday and said it would also investigate.^{5, 6}

The news is coming in at breakneck speed, and this could be the moment where everything changes. Because if Republicans in the Senate can see all of this and still refuse to hear witnesses and hold a fair trial to convict and remove Trump, they have completely forgone their duty to the American people and turned their backs on our democracy.

Trump is excitedly tweeting about it and asking his millions of Twitter followers to chip in to her campaign because of her blind support for his corruption. Right-wingers on the internet are abuzz.

McSally is in one of the tightest races in the country this year, and control of the Senate could come down to what happens in Arizona. Brett Kavanaugh must recuse himself from ruling on Seila Law LLC v. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, since he ruled on the underlying legal question in another case. He is clearly not impartial.

Dear MoveOn member,

The Supreme Court will soon hear a case that threatens the existence of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an independent consumer watchdog championed by Elizabeth Warren and established as part of the Dodd-Frank Act.¹

We are calling on Justice Kavanaugh to recuse himself from the case, because he previously ruled on the underlying legal question, making it clear he is not impartial.

The law states that "no judge shall hear or determine an appeal from the decision of a case or issue tried by him."²

Brett Kavanaugh must recuse himself from ruling on Seila Law LLC v. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, since he ruled on the underlying legal question in another case. He is clearly not impartial.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau protects us from scams and predatory lenders. In its first six years, the CFPB won $11.9 billion in relief to consumers.³ A payday lender has brought a case that threatens the existence of the CFPB—and Justice Kavanaugh is poised to help the payday lender win. We can't let the CFPB's existence be threatened by a man who faced 83 ethics complaints.

We urge Justice Brett Kavanugh to recuse himself from Seila Law LLC v. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He has already ruled on the underlying legal question in this case in PHH Corp. v. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Brett Kavanaugh must recuse himself from this case. It is clear he is not impartial.
