Let's do this

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

I'm writing to you from my home in La Crescenta, CA, where I've been doing some thinking since the debate. President Obama has been carrying a heavy load for all of us for the past four years. He's been doing an almost impossible job given that Republicans have been working against him since day one. Let's do our part!

In the next 31 days, let's get the guy re-elected who passed health care reform (when no other president could, not even Clinton), rescued us from another Great Depression, saved the U.S. auto industry, and on and on.

So far, I've made almost 600 calls by making 15 calls a day—but now that Obama needs more support to combat Romney's lies, I'm making 100 calls this weekend and at least 25 calls every day after that.

Can you join me by making 100 calls this weekend?

Yes, I can make 100 calls this weekend!

Not sure about 100, but I'll make calls.

If 200 of us each make 100 calls this weekend, we'll be on track to hit our ambitious call goals and turn out the volunteers we need to make this a successful week. We'll be doing our jobs by helping get out the vote among people who support Obama, but who might need just a little more encouragement to vote. We can't let Mitt Romney and his lies catch up with us in the last month of this campaign. President Obama will win if we turn out the vote—so, let's do this!

Breaking my silence

Below is an email from Helen F. Chavez, the widow of Cesar Chavez. Helen started a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition.

Sign the petition

Dear MoveOn member,

My name is Helen Chavez, and I am the widow of Cesar Chavez, founder of the United Farm Workers. All these years, I chose to stay in the background. I never spoke in public or did an interview with a reporter.

But I'm speaking out now—because after all these years it is no longer acceptable for respected news organizations to refer to human beings as "illegal."

An action can be illegal—a human being cannot be. Calling a person "illegal" is dehumanizing, and all Latinos, especially our children, feel the pain when this word is uttered.

That's why I started a petition on SignOn.org calling on major news organizations—starting with The New York Times—to end the dehumanizing practice of calling people "illegal."

Click here to sign the petition: Stop using the word "illegal" to refer to farm workers and other Latinos.

Back in 1962, farm workers were treated as though we were agricultural tools. One grower called us "rented slaves." Working in the fields, I remember we were called "wetbacks," "dirty Mexicans," and worse. It was common then in parts of our country for African-Americans to also be degraded by those who called them the "n" word or used stereotypes because of their skin color or who they were.

Today, farm workers and many other immigrants do important work for low pay and under miserable conditions. We harvest the greatest bounty of food in the world. We spend our lives laboring in service jobs where we make beds, clean rooms, cook meals, and care for the young and the elderly. We work in construction and manufacturing. We serve our country in the military.

Why should we tolerate farm workers and other Latinos being treated this way? Some day not long from now people will look back and ask, "How could people call other people names like illegal?"

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Helen F. Chavez, widow of Cesar Chavez

No regrets

Don't wake up after the election with regrets about what more you could've done. Can you spend 15 minutes calling MoveOn members in swing states to help make sure we win on November 6?

Start Calling

Dear MoveOn member,

Imagine waking up after a long election night, eyes puffy and still in disbelief that Romney won Florida to seal his victory. I get chills at the thought.

But what's worse is waking up thinking you could've done more, wishing you'd dug deeper to help turnout Obama voters.

If you don't want to wake up with puffy eyes, serious regrets, or a Romney victory, here are a few reasons to turn it up a notch:

1. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows Romney and Obama are in a "statistical tie" in Florida and Virginia.1

2. Karl Rove's American Crossroads is flooding the airwaves in swing states with $16 million in anti-Obama ads.2

3. The Romney campaign is bragging about a big October surprise on foreign policy.3

In addition to all this, the GOP's war on voting rights could keep tens of millions from voting.4 With just 34 days left, that's enough time for Romney to turn the tables.

So we're fighting back. MoveOn members coast-to-coast are making calls to get the volunteers we need in swing states, like Florida and Virginia, so that no Obama voter is left behind. Our member-to-member calling system is easy to use and lets people anywhere have a big impact on the race.

Can you sign up to spend 15 minutes making election calls?

Yes, I'll make a few calls!

Calling other MoveOn members is a great experience, and one member talking to another is one of the best ways to sign up volunteers and do your part in this election. Through our Voters Rising program, we've already signed up members in swing states for nearly 10,000 volunteer shifts to help get out the vote. If we can make even more calls, we'll be able to recruit enough volunteers where we need it most: states like Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and more.

Every vote is going to count in this close election, and every volunteer we sign up increases our chances to win. Can you sign up to call other MoveOn members as we enter the final stretch?

Yes, I'll call.

Thanks for all you do.

#MittLies

Become part of the MoveOn Truth Squad for the first presidential debate TOMORROW NIGHT (Wednesday) at 8:30 p.m. ET. Get expert Romney fact-checks out to your friends, family, and key journalists. Just click to join.

Join!
Dear MoveOn member,

Experts agree: Mitt Romney really needs to win this debate. So we can't expect a little thing like "the truth" to get in his way.

40 million Americans will tune into the first presidential debate TOMORROW NIGHT (Wednesday), but how many of them hear the truth is partly up to us. Because, we can't count on the media to fact-check Romney—at least, not without a little push.

So, we're turning our website into fact-check central for the debate. From there, MoveOn members will have instant access to Romney fact checks from our expert allies. And you'll be able to share them instantly on Facebook and Twitter, as part of the MoveOn Truth Squad.

Imagine all of your friends getting the facts straight from you in real time. Imagine journalists—who live and breathe the instantaneous feedback on Twitter—seeing #MittLies as a trending hashtag. That can help win the most important battle of the debate—what people say about it afterwards.

See the facts, share the facts, and help shape the story of the first presidential debate.

Click here to become part of the MoveOn Truth Squad for the debate!

Why did the mainstream media call out Paul Ryan for his convention speech lies? CNN's Wolf Blitzer said it best: "every journalist is getting a lot of email" pointing out Ryan's "lies."1

If we want the media responding the same way to any lies that Romney spits out tomorrow night, then we've got to be ready and we've got to be fast.

So, we're partnering with experts at Think Progress and Center for American Progress Action Fund to instantly fact-check Romney's statements, which will appear on our "Debate Watch 2012 Dashboard" at moveon.org. From there, you'll be able to share them instantly on Facebook and Twitter. The best member tweets will even be retweeted by MoveOn and shown on our Debate Watch site.

But how can we be that influential? Well, the average social media user has 126 Twitter followers and 245 Facebook friends.2 So if 108,000 MoveOn members (just 1.5% of us) take part in the MoveOn Truth Squad tomorrow night, we can reach up to 40 million Americans.

So click here to RSVP for tomorrow night's MoveOn Truth Squad for the debate!

Thanks for all you do.

Re: Super awesome news

Don't let the corporations and the conservative billionaires buy this election! If all 7 million MoveOn members chip in just a little—even a dollar helps—we could truly tip the election our way. The project deadline is TODAY. Please chip in whatever you can. :-)

We've invented a breakthrough new technique for turning out HUGE numbers of progressive voters. It's been tested with 170,000 voters—and we got the most exciting results in MoveOn's history! We want to roll it out nationwide to save the Senate, win back the House, and hold on to the White House.

WOW! At 5 PM on Friday, a major partner offered to match every dollar donated, up to $500,000. So you'll now get twice the bang for your buck! Can you chip in?

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

I think we may have just discovered the silver bullet that could help us win the whole election.

Two weeks ago, we ran a secret test of a new voter turnout method in a state primary election. There were 170,000 voters in the study. We just got back the results, and our new method was 3.7 times more effective, dollar for dollar, than the best techniques used by campaigns today. Take a look at this simple chart:

Making phone calls |== Sending mail |===== Going door-to-door |======= OUR NEW METHOD |=========================

Let me put that in perspective: Normally, we're delighted if we figure out something that gives us a 10% improvement. This test showed a 370% improvement.

This alone could be enough to tip the balance in the Senate, help Democrats win the House—and maybe even flip two or three swing states.

The challenge: We had no idea we'd get such great results, and to have everything ready in time, we need to commit by Monday!! Which means we have to raise a good portion of the entire $3 million budget by then. Arrgh!

But things are suddenly looking up, because at 5 PM on Friday, I got a call from a major partner who's as excited about this project as we are. They're offering to match every dollar donated, up to $500,000, with their own efforts! That means you'll get twice the bang for your buck.

So, whatever you're doing right now, can you take three minutes to make a contribution so that we can use this incredibly powerful new voter turnout method across the country? This is the moment to open up your wallet for this election. Seriously. CODE RED. Please help!

I don't want to look back on Nov. 7—the day after the election—and think, "If only we had a bit more money in late September, we could've won those two crucial Senate races! Or (God forbid) we could've run up the margin enough to keep Republicans from stealing the election!" And I KNOW you don't want to be thinking, "If only I and a few other people had chipped in the price of a pizza, we'd be celebrating right now!"

So I'm trying to make this as clear as I can. This is the most promising set of test results we've EVER seen at MoveOn.

I can't give all the details of what we figured out, because we don't want the other side to know. So this has to be somewhat vague. But basically, we took groundbreaking research from social psychology, and for the first time, applied it to voting. And, wow, it really worked!

The question is whether we can raise enough money in the next few days to roll it out nationally. If just 30,000 of us chip in, we can change the outcome of this election. Can you chip in?

Yes, I want to make a donation.

Thanks for all you do.
