Stunning Elizabeth Warren poll results

We commissioned a poll about Senator Elizabeth Warren's standing in critical presidential primary states, and the results are stunning: When Democratic Iowa Caucus goers and New Hampshire primary voters get to know Elizabeth Warren, they want her to run for president.¹

Using small-dollar contributions from MoveOn members, we turned to industry leaders at YouGov to conduct this poll, and this is what they found: Voters love Senator Warren's personal story, her status (as Time put it) as a "new sheriff of Wall Street,"² and, importantly, her major legislative proposals—lowering student-loan interest rates, expanding Social Security, breaking up the big banks, and holding Wall Street criminals accountable.

This poll shows unequivocally that a majority of voters in the two critical states of Iowa and New Hampshire are what we'd call "moveable"—they're open to supporting Sen. Warren if we can tell them what she stands for. Realistically, the results don't say that Sen. Warren would win today—but they show that Sen. Warren has a real opportunity to build the levels of support she would need to win in both states if she decided to run.

Now, we have to keep doing the hard work of convincing her to get in the race. We can make these results send shockwaves through the political press. And through some very strategic targeting—we can get them in front of real influencers in Washington and people close to Sen. Warren. But to do that, we'll need everyone's help.

Let's dig into the numbers a little bit.

Our results show that, after these likely caucus goers and primary voters learn about Elizabeth Warren's biography and issue positions, not only do a stunning 79% say they want her to run, but, in both states, Sen. Warren ends up leading all other potential Democratic candidates in a head-to-head ballot question.

Here's more:

• 97% of survey respondents across both Iowa and New Hampshire agree with Warren's call to lower student-loan interest rates.
  
  
• 92% agree with Sen. Warren's call to expand Social Security benefits.
   
• 91% agree with her statement about breaking up the big banks.

Those numbers prove that Elizabeth Warren's vision is powerfully resonant with the voters she would need to win the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary—especially the young voters who'll be critical to any victory in 2016. Sen. Warren holds more than a 20-point lead in a head-to-head matchup with other potential candidates among respondents aged 18-29, once they learn about her.

Thanks to these results, we know that support for a contested primary is nearly unanimous among all age groups, and that a core segment of the winning Obama coalition—young people—are particularly excited about Sen. Warren.

Our job now is to capitalize on these results—and we can do just that if enough members chip in today. Will you chip in $3?

I'm Nick Berning, MoveOn's Communications Director. You don't hear from me often because I spend most of my time talking to reporters and driving our messages in the media. 

But I had to write to you today because I just got back the results of the polling we commissioned in Iowa and New Hampshire—and it would be an understatement to call the results encouraging. The results contain incredible news related to Senator Elizabeth Warren's prospects in a presidential election. 

I wish I could share specifics with you right now. But to maximize media coverage, we have to share the results with reporters first. And my team is still working out our release strategy for later this week. 

Here's what I can tell you for now, without spoiling our chances of generating a ton of media coverage. The results will show that Elizabeth Warren's story and vision are powerfully resonant with voters crucial to winning the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. This news could be a game-changer that helps persuade Elizabeth Warren to run for president.

It's an amazing start to the next big stage of our "Run Warren Run" campaign: proving Warren's ideas move real voters and that she really, truly could win a general election if she runs. (By the way: In case you missed the news, New York's Working Families Party decided over the weekend to join the call for Warren to run—a huge infusion of momentum for our movement.)

Next up: our poll release. The poll results have the potential to be game-changing, but they are just a start. I need your help to:

1. Invest in a distribution strategy for our polling data, including targeted advertising that will reach key influencers.

2. Commission more polls immediately to keep the media momentum going. (If enough MoveOn members chip in, we can also poll in presidential swing states to demonstrate how strong a candidate Elizabeth Warren would be in a general election.)

We first started talking about doing polls nearly a month ago. We were hopeful. But we never could have imagined results this promising.

That said, as incredible as these results are, this poll, by itself, won't be enough to convince Warren to enter the race. 

We need to raise money to get our initial poll results in front of the political elite in Washington, D.C., Iowa, and New Hampshire the moment they're released. And then, we need to commission more polls to prove that Warren can win in key swing states. And we can't waste a moment. 

Normally, I'd wait until we could tell you more about what our poll said to ask for money—and normally I don't write fundraisers! But we really have to hit the ground running the second our game-changing poll is released to reporters. We can do that through smart ads, savvy media pitching, and more polls in the coming weeks—but there isn't a moment to lose, and we need your help to get started on all of this right away.

Sunday, the NY WFP made big news by joining the movement to urge Elizabeth Warren to run for president in 2016.

The effort to urge Elizabeth Warren to run for president just got a lot stronger thanks to the endorsement of a New York powerhouse—the Working Families Party.

On Sunday evening, the New York Working Families Party made the bold choice to join this movement. Announcing the decision, state Director Bill Lipton said, "Senator Warren is the nation's most powerful voice for working families fighting against a set of rules written by and for Wall Street. That's the debate we want to see, and that's why we're urging Senator Warren to run for President."

This is a big deal. The WFP has spent years building serious electoral and grassroots clout. They don't take elections lightly and the fact that they're on board says a lot about the potential for an Elizabeth Warren candidacy to transform the Democratic Party.

Undoubtedly, there will be people in New York who are upset with the WFP's vote. That's why it's important that we show them this morning that the number of people who think they absolutely made the right decision far outweighs the nay-sayers.

Last weekend people gathered in over 220 house parties to talk about how they can further the effort locally. And the media have begun to recognize this campaign as a serious force.

But if we want to convince Senator Warren to run we can't just say it. We need to say it big.

We need RUN WARREN RUN spelled out in unmissable letters. Literally.

We've already seen hundreds of creative photos of people supporting the effort to get Senator Warren to run, like this awesome picture sent in by MoveOn members in Western Massachusetts:

That's just one example. We've seen pictures of everything from big groups to individuals (and even babies!). We've seen pictures with homemade signs and with banners. We've even seen selfies. And these pictures are awesome demonstrations of the human energy behind the draft Warren movement. We've also seen how these pictures get picked up by the press because of a simple truth: real people are the most powerful messengers this campaign has. So these pictures aren't just fun—they also have an impact.

We know this community is brimming with creativity. So whether it's writing RUN WARREN RUN in five foot letters in the snow (we're looking at you, New England!) or spelling it out as a human tower; whether it's dressed in costume or etched in stone—we want to see it!

In a week, on Presidents Day, MoveOn members will be gathering together to do visibility events in support of the Run Warren Run campaign. We'll share the best submissions by then and blow some of them up to a huge size to include them in the visibility events as well.

President Obama: Issue an Executive Order to Fight Money in Politics

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Glenn Simpson from the organization Public Citizen and I started a petition to President Barack Obama, which says:

Take a bite out of Citizens United by issuing an executive order requiring federal contractors to disclose their political spending. The American people have the right to know what corporations with lucrative, taxpayer-funded government contracts are spending to influence elections.

President Obama was right in his State of the Union address: The secret billionaire and big business "dark money"enabled by the U.S. Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United ruling is pulling "our politics into the gutter."

And he can do something about it right now by issuing an executive order requiring government contractors to disclose their political spending. He doesn't even need agreement from the Boehner-McConnell Congress.

That way, We the People will know which corporations are spending how much either backing politicians who may help them get lucrative government business that our tax dollars pay for or attacking politicians who do not.

While we continue building nationwide grassroots momentum for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and working on other remedies to the plague of money in politics, we need President Obama to take this one simple step right now that will at least shed light on the political influence of corporations that get taxpayer-funded business from the federal government.
