Sign this petition re: gun violence

Gun violence in America has reached epidemic proportions, so our government should be treating it like a public health crisis. Trump must make this a priority, and the CDC's findings must be widely published and used as a basis for legislation to end this national epidemic.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

This past Friday, a man in Virginia Beach, Virginia, opened fire in a municipal building and killed 12 people. The victims of this mass shooting were community members who left behind friends and family who are mourning this tragedy and want answers about how such a thing could happen to their loved ones. We still do not know the motive behind this senseless killing.

Mass shootings like what happened in Virginia Beach, in Parkland, at Santa Fe high school, and in so many other communities around the country—as well as the daily acts of gun violence that take so many—are becoming an epidemic in our nation. As a father of two children who are in public school, I am terrified that my child could be the next victim. I am terrified for my family and for so many other people I don't know, because we never know when the next mass shooting may be.

Our government should be treating these mass shootings like a public health crisis. Yet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not been given the necessary resources to study the unique question of why so many mass shootings and other gun-related deaths are happening in our nation. The CDC is not being empowered by the Trump administration to protect our country against mass shootings and indiscriminate gun violence. We cannot let this continue.

Sign this petition demanding that the CDC study mass shootings and gun violence as a public health crisis.

Gun violence in America has reached epidemic proportions, so our government should be treating it like a public health crisis. Donald Trump and Congress must make this issue priority, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must be funded to study this crisis. Its findings must be widely published and used as a basis for legislation to end this national epidemic.

We have to designate resources and time to understanding the underlying cause of these mass shootings and the countless incidents of gun violence, and then create comprehensive policy that will work to end this indiscriminate gun violence. This administration has refused to acknowledge that those killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland are victims of gun violence. When Donald Trump was sworn into office, he quickly reversed a rule which banned gun purchases by the mentally ill. This is a systemic issue that requires a top-down solution.

A study by the CDC should identify the underlying causes and recommend comprehensive solutions, which Congress should use as a basis for creating legislation to solve the root causes of this national crisis. Tell Trump and his Republican Party to direct the CDC to study America's gun violence epidemic.
