Dear Mar,
In a profound betrayal of American democracy, Senate Republicans voted yesterday to turn a blind eye to Donald Trump's abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Instead of holding him accountable, at his State of the Union address on Tuesday, they cheered, "Four more years! Four more years!"
Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have crashed and burned American democracy—fully abdicating their constitutional responsibility to protect our nation from the most dangerous and demagogic president in U.S. history.
It's now up to us to vote them all out. Yes, I know: The Electoral College, the Kremlin, and Trump's own dirty tricks will make it difficult. But we have no other choice. The fates of our democracy and of the society and world we want to leave our children and grandchildren depend on it.
No organization in America has a better track record of success in developing cutting-edge strategies to get out the vote and win elections than MoveOn. That's why I want to ask you—no, plead with you—to start a monthly donation of $5 to MoveOn right now to help defeat Trump and end McConnell's disastrous control of the Senate this November.
I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
If you think it's going to be easy to beat Trump in November, I urge you to reconsider.
The polling data experts at The New York Times put it this way: "Despite low national approval ratings and the specter of impeachment, President Trump remains highly competitive in the battleground states likeliest to decide his re-election."1
They explain that their polling and other data suggest that Trump's "advantage in the Electoral College relative to the nation as a whole remains intact or has even grown since 2016, raising the possibility that the Republicans could—for the third time in the past six elections—win the presidency while losing the popular vote."2
And now, McConnell and Senate Republicans have given Trump license to cheat in his re-election.
Defeating McConnell and ending Republican control of the Senate won't be easy either. But the five most vulnerable Senate Republicans are now considered the most unpopular senators in the country, with Susan Collins of Maine the #1 most unpopular senator.3
I've seen MoveOn's plans to register, motivate, and turn out voters to defeat Trump and McConnell and end Republican control of the Senate, and I have to tell you that the plans give me hope. But MoveOn needs to get started right now, and it's going to take all of us chipping in to make it all possible.
Just imagine what Trump will do next, after being let off the hook by the Republicans in the Senate. Even more terrifying, imagine what he will do with another four years if he is re-elected. That's why we must stop him. Please join me and start a monthly donation of $5, or whatever you can afford, now, Mar.

Now, please, don't despair. There's a clear path to victory, and MoveOn has honed in on it: engaging the 7 million "high-potential" voters—young voters, voters of color, people with lower incomes, and new Americans who DID NOT vote in 2016.
In Michigan, for example, where the 2016 presidential contest came down to roughly 10,000 votes, it's plausible to say that voters who stayed home were the ones who decided the election.
Nationally, these 7 million Americans have been most affected by decades of a broken political system, economic inequality, and laws designed to make it harder to vote.
At the same time, these missing voters tend to be more progressive than most voters. For example, they are more likely to support a higher minimum wage, a federal jobs guarantee, higher taxes to pay for government services, and other progressive priorities.
These are the voters MoveOn is focused on.
There are also an additional 7 million young people of color who weren't old enough to vote in 2016 but will be by November. MoveOn has a plan to mobilize them, too.
The bottom line is that voter turnout will determine our nation's future. But it's hard, expensive work to identify, register, motivate, and turn out voters, and that work must start now. Will you join me and chip in $5 monthly to MoveOn to fuel this work?

Remember, we beat the liar in chief by 2.8 million votes in 2016. And the 2018 elections had the highest turnout of any midterm election since 1914–handing House Republicans their most resounding defeat in decades.4 If we come together now, we will prevail this November. We simply must.
Thanks for all you do.
