Dear MoveOn member,
Since the day that Donald Trump took office in 2017, his administration has been constantly targeting public lands. Whether it's rolling back offshore drilling regulations or loosening regulations on endangered species, our natural resources and ecosystems have been in grave danger over the last few years.1 The latest target of the Trump administration's assault on our public lands? Our nation's wildlife refuges.
The U.S. Department of the Interior plans to open an unprecedented number of wildlife refuges to more hunting and fishing—totaling more than 2.3 million acres of public lands across 97 national wildlife refuges and nine fish hatcheries. This reckless decision threatens millions of animals and must be reversed immediately.
It's difficult to overstate the danger of this decision, especially in the current moment. America's wild animals are in danger in the very places set aside to protect them. Opening national wildlife refuges to more hunting is exactly the kind of action that is fueling the wildlife extinction crisis. Species like mountain lions, migratory birds and black bears will have their safe havens turned into death zones.
We should be working to protect animals, not making it easier for them to be gunned down. These wild animals deserve to be safe from hunting in the very places set aside to protect them.
Thanks!
