Dear MoveOn member,
To be honest, this Fourth of July will be challenging for many of us. We're in a time of national crisis, and these last few years have left us feeling anxious, exhausted, and more divided from our neighbors than ever before.
But there's a different story to tell about America and the moment that we're in: America is a work in progress. It's a narrative that we are shaping every day through our resistance to racism and our commitment to creating an America that works for all.
We are proud to partner this Independence Day weekend with prominent writers, actors, musicians, and performers on #MyAmericanFlag, a social media campaign highlighting diverse voices that truly make America great. Artists including Stephanie Beatriz, Aloe Blacc, Roxane Gay, Billy Porter, and Alfre Woodard have worked with us to create versions of the American flag that honor and celebrate their own individual heritage and how it fits into the broader American fabric. No matter where we're from or how we got here, there's no "right" or "wrong" way to be an American, and we all have a role to play in making the American dream a reality for everyone.
We won't let our identities as Americans be restricted or undermined by those who sow hate and fear. By celebrating those voices that are sometimes excluded from the definition of "American" because of race or national origin, we're reaffirming our commitment to our country's highest ideals. And of course, an important part of being an American is our ability to determine who leads our country. If you're able, that begins—but doesn't end—with voting.
After you've made sure that you're registered, go to MoveOn's Facebook, Instagram and Twitter feeds to see what Richard Blanco, Ashley Judd, Dulce Candy, Atkins Estimond, Luvvie Ajayi Jones, Aparna Nancherla and Reshma Saujani have to say about what being an American means to them, and what their personal American flag looks like.
Thank you for everything you do.
–Michael, Olga, Thad, Evelyn, Jayne, and the rest of the team
