Dear MoveOn member,
We need money for relief, NOW. The COVID crisis in the U.S. is worse than it's ever been, and millions of Americans are still struggling to get by as a result of the associated economic fallout. Congress must act now to provide the support we need until the pandemic is under control and the economy has stabilized.
There's one simple way to both help curb the worst economic effects of COVID and slow the spread of the disease: putting cash directly in people's hands.
And now, we finally have a White House and Congress more willing to tackle this crisis and support all of us who have been impacted. President Biden has proposed a $1.9 trillion relief package and Democratic leaders in Congress are moving it forward for a vote.1 But there's a very real danger that key lifesaving provisions could be stripped from the bill or watered down, unless we apply enough pressure on our elected officials.
The Senate is debating this COVID relief package today—and this is a vital opportunity to make your voice heard.
Call Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand now and demand that Congress preserve key lifesaving policies such as a new round of relief checks, expanded unemployment insurance, and a $15/hr minimum wage in Biden's stimulus package, and that they pass it immediately.
Here's the number to call: 833-932-0171
Biden's proposal for a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package is a good first step that includes policies like expanded unemployment insurance, to support those who are out of work until they can get back on their feet.
But many Republicans in the House and Senate are planning to oppose the bill, and even some Democrats may push to water it down by stripping out key proposals.
It's not an exaggeration to say that every item taken out of Biden's relief proposal means more harm and suffering—and more lives lost.
Call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand at 833-932-0171, and demand support for bold COVID relief such as expanded unemployment insurance, another set of relief checks, and a $15/hr minimum wage.
It's been more than a year since the first known case of COVID-19 in the U.S.—almost a full year of our lives and communities being turned upside down by illness, uncertainty, and grief. We have lost family members, jobs, and the ability to plan for the future.
But until we can guarantee money to the millions of Americans who have been left without real, robust relief, COVID will continue to spread, and it will continue to hit our country's most vulnerable populations hardest. This must be a top priority for legislators if we're going to begin the process of recovery from this pandemic.
Thanks for all you do.
