Members of Congress will soon take one of the most important votes of their career—will they support peace and diplomacy with Iran, or put us on the path to another war? 

We're on the verge of a hard-fought and historic victory for diplomacy. But nothing is settled until the votes actually happen, which reports are now saying will be late next week.¹

As lawmakers vote in Washington, MoveOn members and our allies will hold hundreds of Vigils for Peace and Diplomacy across the country next Thursday, September 10, at 6 p.m. local time. But we still need a volunteer in Inwood to help coordinate one.

34 senators now support President Obama's historic agreement with Iran. That's enough to ensure Congress can't override President Obama and kill the deal if every single senator keeps their pledge.

Some news outlets are calling this a done deal—but the fight's not over yet. An updated version of Jo's email outlining our next steps is below.

I think we're actually within striking distance of a huge victory for diplomacy. But we're not there yet.

Let me put our progress so far in perspective: When we began this fight, we knew it would be an uphill battle just to sustain President Obama's veto and keep us off the path to war. But now, a bill disapproving the Iran deal might not even reach President Obama's desk at all ...

This represents a real paradigm shift in how America deals with conflict and danger abroad. A "diplomacy first" approach. But we still need to keep fighting—to keep the war hawks from sending an anti-diplomacy bill to President Obama's desk in the first place.

In the rational world outside of Congress, it's unbelievable that Republicans (and some Democrats) are even trying to sabotage this agreement. And in the rational world, this reckless and yet sadly predictable behavior is already having a real impact on our reputation around the world.

Samantha Power, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, wrote last week about how her team's ability to negotiate in the U.N. is undermined when war hawks make America's commitments look unreliable.³ More national security experts wrote this week about how blocking the agreement would put our credibility in question and our coalition with Europe at serious risk.⁴

The best possible outcome—the one that makes diplomacy the default option in the future—is making sure Democrats don't force President Obama to veto a bill disapproving the Iran resolution in the first place.

With the momentum we have right now, we're on a path to do just that. We have 16 days to persuade seven more senators to get there—and win.

Tell Malaysia Airlines: Stop transporting shark fins

Malaysia is a major importer of shark fins, which is contributing to the destruction of shark populations globally. Call on Malaysia Airlines to join 26 other airlines in banning transport of shark fins on all aircrafts.

I'm David McGuire, a MoveOn member in Sausalito, CA. I started a petition to the CEO of Malaysia Airlines, which says:

Malaysia is a major importer of shark fins for the luxury shark fin soup trade. This trade is unsustainable and is leading to the destruction of shark populations globally. We call on Malaysia Airlines to join 26 airlines including Singapore Airlines and Air Asia in making a statement for ocean sustainability and saying no to transporting shark fins on all aircrafts.

Sharks are threatened worldwide, largely driven by the shark fin trade. As many as 100,000,000 sharks are being killed each year.¹

Airlines play a major role in allowing import and export of illegal, unregulated, and unreported seafood products like shark fins.

Twenty-six other major air carriers have said they will not ship shark fin.² Help save the world's and Malaysia's sharks by stopping this unsustainable trade.

Vigil for peace in Inwood?

Dear MoveOn member,

Going into August, war hawks like Senator Ted Cruz boasted that overwhelming opposition at town halls across the country would derail the historic nuclear deal with Iran.¹

Boy, was he wrong. All through August, MoveOn members and our allies showed up at town halls and rallied outside of congressional offices. We made thousands of phone calls, and hundreds of thousands of us signed petitions. And now we're just a handful of votes away from ensuring that this deal passes through Congress in a few weeks.²

We are SO close. Now we need to get past the finish line. Next week, members of Congress will be back in Washington, preparing to take one of the most important votes of their careers. The first votes could come as early as next Thursday—and we need to be ready to send the message that voters across the country want peace and diplomacy instead of war.

That's why we're organizing Vigils for Peace and Diplomacy across the country next Thursday, September 10 at 6 p.m. local time. This could be our last chance to send this message loud and clear to Congress: Support peace and diplomacy over war and militarism.

New Yorkers: Sign Sen. Schumer's "yearbook" to say #NoWarWithIran

Dear New York MoveOn member,

The SchumerMobile hits New York City streets today.¹ Pictured below, it began its journey just in front of Senator Charles Schumer's Manhattan office, as one hundred MoveOn members chanted "No war with Iran" and called on Congress to support the Iran nuclear deal.

The SchumerMobile is a MoveOn member-funded, weeklong public rebuke of Sen. Schumer's opposition to the Iran deal in the form of a mobile billboard that will crisscross Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.²

The billboard text suggests that Sen. Schumer's actions to undermine the historic diplomatic agreement with Iran have won him the ignominious title of "Most Likely to Start a War." The text also serves as a reminder of the stark consequences we'll face if New York's Democratic lawmakers join with congressional Republicans to wreck the Iran nuclear deal.

To make certain all New York MoveOn members have an opportunity to hold Sen. Schumer accountable and send a powerful message to yet-undecided Democrats, we've created a "yearbook" page for Sen. Schumer.

As one of only two Senate Democrats opposed to the Iran nuclear deal to date, Sen. Schumer is standing with Donald Trump, Dick Cheney, and Republicans in Congress—and against President Obama and the strong majority of Democrats in the Senate. (Let's not forget that Sen. Schumer wants to be the next leader of Senate Democrats.)

They. Defunded. Planned. Parenthood.

Five states have defunded Planned Parenthood. At least eleven states are considering similar cuts or have launched investigations to attack Planned Parenthood.

In just two weeks, five states—Utah, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Hampshire, and Alabama—defunded Planned Parenthood.¹

And as soon as Congress reconvenes, anti-choice Republicans will resume pushing legislation to cut off Planned Parenthood nationwide, perhaps even threatening a government shutdown.³

This is an all-out assault on Planned Parenthood—so we've launched a major campaign to turn the tide before this vital women's health resource is completely decimated.

But since no one knew these sneak attacks were coming, we didn't budget for this fight. Will you chip in $3 to help MoveOn stand with Planned Parenthood?

Yes, I'll chip in to help stand with Planned Parenthood.

Anti-choice activists have been campaigning to defund Planned Parenthood for years.

In 2011 alone, the anti-choice group Susan B. Anthony List bragged that they'd cut over $61 million in funding for Pap smears, cancer screenings, and other basic health services at Planned Parenthood.⁴

But since the release of those heavily edited videos recorded by anti-choice militants who are linked to clinic bombings and shootings, Planned Parenthood is under attack like never before.⁵

Here's our plan to fight back:

• We'll team up with Planned Parenthood for a nationwide "Pink Out" day of action in late September to get everyone wearing pink in support of Planned Parenthood.
• We'll hold pro-choice lawmakers who flip their votes against Planned Parenthood accountable with hard-hitting ads, phone calls, and protests in front of their offices.
• We'll focus attention on real Planned Parenthood patients by featuring them in Facebook ads and as petition leaders.

But all this will cost money—so if you've ever visited a Planned Parenthood, know anyone who's ever visited a Planned Parenthood, or have a child or loved one who might ever need Planned Parenthood—now's the time to stand up and fight.
