Congress members are coming home. Here's how we'll greet them.

During the first congressional recess of Donald Trump's presidency, MoveOn members and fellow progressives across America flooded town hall meetings and confronted their members of Congress at their local offices

Dear MoveOn member,

During the first congressional recess of Donald Trump's presidency, MoveOn members and fellow progressives across America flooded town hall meetings and confronted their members of Congress at their local offices, striking fear into the hearts of Republicans who dared to even consider repealing Obama's signature health care legislation and sending a clear message to Democrats that they must stand up to the Trump administration

And what happened once senators and representatives returned to Washington? We won one victory after another.

First, we saved health care for 24 million Americans, when Republicans couldn't unite behind health care repeal because constituent outrage was overwhelming. (But we have to stay vigilant, resisting all attempts to take away health care and holding elected officials who vote to repeal health care accountable.)

Then, white supremacist and Trump senior adviser Steve Bannon was removed from the National Security Council. (That's great news, but we need to do more. He must be removed from the White House completely, because a white nationalist has no place in the Oval Office.)

And just this morning, House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes was forced to recuse himself from Congress' Russia probe—citing "left-wing activist groups" that filed ethics complaints against him.1 MoveOn was one of those groups, and the hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members who called for his removal can claim this victory. (But the only way to get to the bottom of Trump's Russia ties is an independent, 9/11-style commission with subpoena power that can launch a full, fair, and nonpartisan investigation.)

Our pressure is working. But, we need to keep it up. And as we see from today's vote by Senate Republicans to change the rules in order to push through Trump's divisive Supreme Court pick, there's always more work to be done.

Congress is about to come home again for the next two weeks; it's the second congressional recess of Donald Trump’s presidency. Once again, we must show up at our congressional offices and town halls make it clear that we, the energized resistance, aren't going anywhere.

We need you during the next two weeks! But according to our records, there isn't yet a Resistance Recess meeting scheduled close to you. Can you host an event, so we can invite other constituents in your area? Here's how:

First, double-check our Resistance Recess website that already has hundreds of events to see if there's an event near you. (It's possible that an event has just been added, or that we don't have your full address.) Click here now to see if there's a local Resistance Recess event targeting your member of Congress.

If you don't see anything posted, call your representative's and/or senators' district and D.C. offices to see if they are planning on holding a public town hall or office hours.

  1. If YES, they say that they are holding a town hall or office hours, submit the details here, and we will invite nearby MoveOn members who are constituents to join you there and prepare you to talk to your members of Congress in person.

  2. If you discover that NO, your members of Congress are not hosting a town hall within a reasonable distance from you, you can host a "constituent town hall"—an event that constituents hold to have their voices heard and highlight their lawmakers' lack of a formal town hall. A constituent town hall is a great way to get media attention and highlight that your lawmaker is avoiding constituents during the congressional recess!

During February recess, constituent town halls organized by MoveOn members earned media attention across the country, highlighting the cowardice of members of Congress who wouldn't meet their own constituents. Here's how to host one:
    • Find a location—like a library, event space, or even outside a member of Congress’ district office—and pick a time and date.
    • Invite your member of Congress.
    • Click here to post your event on ResistanceRecess.comand MoveOn and partner groups will invite fellow constituents.
    • Put together an agenda and let the media know.
    • Check out our materials page for all the guides and information you need to plan an event.
    • Have an awesome event!

Ready to post a Resistance Recess event? Click here to post the details, and we'll recruit other constituents to join you!

Our recent victory on health care has proven that a strong resistance can accomplish more than many thought possible. But we can't grow complacent. Holding our elected officials accountable every single recess won't be easy, but that's the task before us. And your participation will go a long way because at in-person events like these, even a small number of constituents can make a big difference.

Over the next two weeks, with your help, we will show that the resistance is not going anywhere. That our victory on health care was not a fluke. And that we are only growing stronger.

Let's make it clear that Republicans who side with Trump will be held accountable. And let's ensure that Democrats understand that progressives demand that they use every single tool at their disposal to block Trump’s toxic agenda.

We hope that you'll host or attend a Resistance Recess event. Click here to get started.

Thanks for all you do.

—Manny, Gabriela, Katharine, Victoria, and the rest of the team

P.S. This Sunday, MoveOn, Indivisible, The Working Families Party, People's Action, and The Center for Popular Democracy will host a Ready to Resist Emergency Conference Call to get ready for these recess actions. Click here to RSVP for it.

Wow! Our "RESIST" bumper stickers are popping up everywhere—we’ve mailed out 200,000 already, and yours should be arriving soon! Here’s a photo one MoveOn member sent of theirs “in the wild”:

WATCH NOW! Sen. Merkley filibustering Trump's Supreme Court pick

Right now, Senator Jeff Merkley is on the floor of the Senate filibustering Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch. It's critical that we amplify his message and lift up this act of resistance in defense of our democracy.

Dear MoveOn member,

Right now, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) is on the floor of the Senate filibustering Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch.

Sen. Merkley is demonstrating what leadership looks like—doing everything he can to stop the Republican Supreme Court power grab.

It's critical that we amplify his message and lift up this act of resistance in defense of our democracy. Click here to watch this historic filibuster now and share it with friends.

It's outrageous that the Senate would hand a lifetime appointment to Trump while Trump's team is still at the center of a criminal investigation about its possible collusion with Russia to influence our elections. And even more outrageous that Senate Republicans are considering changing the rules of the Senate to rush through this divisive, right-wing judge—after refusing to give Obama's centrist nominee, Merrick Garland, a hearing, much less a vote, for eight months.

Sen. Merkley was the first senator to declare he would use every tool in his power to stop this power grab, and we need to show him that we will stand with him when he, and others, stand up against the dangerous Trump administration.

Will you watch Sen. Merkley's filibuster and share it with friends, so we make sure everyone not only sees this courageous act of leadership and resistance but also hears the case against moving forward Trump's Supreme Court pick?

In the past few days, enough Democrats and Independents declared their opposition to Gorsuch to stop his confirmation under current Senate rules.

If Republicans decide to change the rules and trigger a nuclear option, it's critical that these Democrats know that we, the voters, stand with them on the right side of history.

Thanks for all you do.

Massively outspent (Supreme Court)

Trump's corporate backers are fighting back. And their strategy is to do what they do best: spend massive amounts of dark money. We're being outspent 20-to-1 on TV ads in the Supreme Court fight. Trump's corporate backers are fighting back. And their strategy is to do what they do best: spend massive amounts of dark money. We're being outspent 20-to-1 on TV ads in the Supreme Court fight.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

First, we halted Trump's Muslim ban. Then, we defeated Trumpcare.

And now, enough Democrats have come out against Trump's lifetime appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his confirmation—unless Republicans resort to the nuclear option and upend Senate rules to force him through.1

The resistance is winning—but the next 72 hours will be absolutely critical. We need to both make sure that Democrats stick together and make clear to Republicans in vulnerable seats that their constituents won't let them get away with changing the rules to ram through Trump's Supreme Court nominee.

But Trump's corporate backers are fighting back. And their strategy is to do what they do best: spend massive amounts of dark money. We're being outspent 20-to-1 on TV ads in the Supreme Court fight.2

Stopping the Republicans from breaking Senate rules to get Trump's nominee confirmed may be one the biggest fights Washington has seen in decades, and we can’t afford to go in so vastly outgunned. Will you chip in $3 to help stop Gorsuch?

Yes, I'll chip in now to help stop Trump's right-wing Supreme Court nominee.

The Gorsuch battle is a clear example of how the right wing is trying to use money to prop up Trump's failing presidency.

Gorsuch is an ideologue who has spent his career siding with corporations against regular Americans—and Trump picked him from a list provided by right-wing think tanks.3

Over the past month, we've seen more than $10 million in dark money being used to sell Gorsuch as a nice guy who had a paper route as a kid and likes horses.4,5

Already, MoveOn members have stepped up to play a key role in the Trump resistance. You helped save health care for 24 million Americans who would have lost it because of Trumpcare. You've rallied to fight and halt his Muslim ban. And you've created enough pressure on Democrats that they are now poised to block Gorsuch's confirmation.

But now that the GOP may change the rules, MoveOn needs to have the resources to counter the right wing's ads with grassroots organizing. To win this fight, we need to keep the Democrats' spines strong and pressure just three Republicans not to throw away Senate rules in order to push through this divisive nominee.

We might not be able to match the corporations dollar for dollar, but I believe that if we all chip in to MoveOn, we can win.

Please, chip in $3 now—or whatever you can afford—to help stop Trump's right-wing Supreme Court nominee.

Thanks for all you do.

—Robert Reich

Call now: Thank your senators for opposing Trump's Supreme Court nominee

No Supreme Court hearing while Trump is being investigated The confirmation hearing for Trump's ultra-right-wing Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, began yesterday—the same day that we learned that Trump and his cronies have been under FBI investigation since July of 2016.

Dear MoveOn member,

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted yesterday on Trump's right-wing Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch. Now, a full Senate vote is expected by Friday.

Fortunately, more than 41 Democrats—including Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand—have come out publicly stating that they will vote no on Gorsuch, and will use the tools at their disposal to stop his confirmation.1

41 is the critical number to stop Gorsuch under current Senate rules, which require 60 votes. So we can still stop Gorsuch, but only if enough Democrats stand strong.

Will you pick up the phone to thank Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand for opposing Neil Gorsuch? We need your senators to hear loud and clear that we're counting on them to continue standing strong, especially while the Trump team is under criminal investigation.

Here's where to call: 1-855-971-2329

When you call, say something like this:

"Thank you for opposing Donald Trump's power grab and demanding Gorsuch meet the 60-vote threshold. The Senate should not change the rules to rush through a lifetime appointment, especially while the Trump administration is under criminal investigation. If you stand strong, we'll stand with you."

After calling, click here to tell us how your call went.

According to Senate rules, 60 votes are required for a "cloture" vote which would allow this nomination to proceed, but Senator Mitch McConnell is threatening the "nuclear option"—changing the rules to rush through this confirmation. This is why we need senators to use every tool at their disposal to stop this power grab—and why it's so important that we get the backs of the senators who stand up to oppose this nomination.

If confirmed, Gorsuch would have a damning effect on national policy for decades. We can't afford a Supreme Court justice who sides with corporations over workers and has a history of rulings that include subverting the education of a special needs student.2 And we can't afford handing Trump—whose ties to Russia are the subject of new revelations nearly every day—a lifetime appointment that could turn his four-year agenda into a 40-year legacy.

Will call to thank your senators, and urge them to keep standing strong?

A Trump nominee for 40 years (or more?!)

We've moved from crisis mode to playing offense. And that's because of you and millions of MoveOn members like you who are determined to deny Trump any significant legislative victory. We've moved from crisis mode to playing offense. And that's because of you and millions of MoveOn members like you who are determined to deny Trump any significant legislative victory.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

"When pigs fly."

That's my answer to anyone who asks me whether or not Donald Trump deserves to pick the next Supreme Court justice.

So you can imagine my utter delight in news that a growing number of Senate Democrats—likely fortified by last week's amazing people-powered health care victory—are now vowing to filibuster Trump's ultra-right-wing Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, and block him from a lifetime seat on our nation’s most powerful court.

But conservative donors are outspending us 20-to-1, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell just said that he'd try to force a vote on Gorsuch as soon as Friday.1,2

So once again, I turn to MoveOn for its strategy and leadership. Last week, MoveOn members fought and helped win the battle to save health care for 24 million Americans (at least for now), a fight MoveOn presciently picked in early December, when most pundits thought the Affordable Care Act was a lost cause. Today, I'm asking MoveOn to help save the Supreme Court.

Eddie, let me level with you: MoveOn's team has been working around the clock since Trump's election (and I know this because they email me at all hours!). Sustaining such relentless work requires serious resources. That's why I'm asking you to join me in becoming a resistance sustainer by chipping in $5 each month. Will you join me?

Yes, I'm with you!

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

You and I have experienced just over two months of Trump’s wreckage. A Gorsuch appointment could extend this horror show for a full 40 years ... or more.

With your support, MoveOn won’t let that happen. Here's the winning plan in two parts:

  • Support Senate Democrats willing to go to the mat and filibuster Gorsuch. MoveOn's superpower is its ability to mobilize a massively effective Democratic base. When Senate Democrats unite—thanks to the unparalleled efforts of MoveOn and its members—Democrats will have the power to deny Gorsuch the 60 votes needed for confirmation.
  • Wedge open and expose the complete illegitimacy of Trump's tanking presidency to weaken GOP resolve. MoveOn's team is exploiting every weakness in Trump's house of cards to drive down the wherewithal of GOP senators to press for a so-called nuclear option to force Gorsuch through. Jeff Sessions, Steve Bannon, Devin Nunes ... you name 'em. MoveOn's team is looking under every proverbial rock for wrongdoing and sounding the alarm, creating pressure for Republican senators to distance themselves from this administration.

None of us could have imagined the utter crush of these past few months.

Here's what's true, however: We've moved from crisis mode to playing offense. And that’s because of you and millions of MoveOn members like you who are determined to deny Trump any significant legislative victory.

We're gaining ground. And tomorrow will be better than today. Because of you. Because of MoveOn. You have my heartfelt thanks even as I ask that we keep pushing forward to save the Supreme Court.

MoveOn needs to hear from us right now. Please become a monthly sustainer of the resistance.

Click here to chip in $5 a month—or whatever you can afford.

Or, if you can't chip in monthly, click here.

Thanks for all you do.

Reminder: Ready to Resist call Sunday with Heather McGhee & Senator Schumer!

Join MoveOn's national call to build from the epic win on Trumpcare as we fight to defend the Supreme Court.

Dear MoveOn member,

Thank you for signing up to join the Sunday evening Ready to Resist call series!

You'll receive a phone call tomorrow, Sunday, April 2, at 8 p.m. ET (7 CT/6 MT/5 PT) at the number you provided when you subscribed to these calls—it will come from 202-750-5203, in case you want to save the contact in your phone.

If you'd like to change the phone number you want us to dial for the call, you can do so by re-registering at moveon.org/readytoresist before 4:30 p.m. ET(3:30 CT/2:30 MT/1:30 PT) Sunday. If you'd like to remove yourself from the RSVP list to this and future calls, click here to change your status.

You can also listen in and ask questions via the livestream of the call at moveon.org/readytoresist starting at 8 p.m. ET (7 CT/6 MT/5 PT).

This week's call is going to be so important, and our amazing speakers, including Senator Chuck Schumer and progressive powerhouse Heather McGhee, are up to the task. Despite the Trump team's being under an active criminal investigation, Mitch McConnell wants to ram Trump's lifetime Supreme Court appointment—extremist nominee Neil Gorsuch—through confirmation this week.1 We'll learn about the actions we can take this week to stop them.

Can you let your friends know about this Sunday's Ready to Resist call?

Click here to share info about the call on Facebook.

Click here to share info about the call on Twitter.

Join the Ready to Resist call!

Sunday's call will feature an all-star list of guests and trainers:

  • Heather McGhee, President of Demos, will fire us up with a vision of democracy and economic justice ahead of the vote on Trump's Supreme Court pick and the upcoming Tax Day protests.

  • Senator Chuck Schumer, the top Senate Democrat, who is leading the charge to uphold a filibuster to keep Gorsuch from being confirmed to the Supreme Court, will describe how people everywhere can make a difference this week.

  • Luz Sosa, Latino Outreach Organizer with Citizen Action of Wisconsin, and Anthony Newby, Executive Director of Minneapolis's Neighborhoods Organizing for Change, will provide expert training on how to make the most of April's Resistance Recess, when Congress is back home to hear from us.

  • I'll be moderating this Sunday's call.

Last Friday, when Paul Ryan canceled the vote on Trumpcare, it was a massive defeat for Donald Trump and his radical agenda. It did more than keep 24 million Americans from being robbed of their health care—it gave us a glimpse of just how powerful our Resistance movement is and demonstrated what we're capable of.

We can propel our health care victory into another this week: protecting our democracy and our communities from Trump's extremist Supreme Court nominee.

As we heard on the last Ready to Resist call, defeating Gorsuch and keeping Trump's legacy from impacting the Court for a generation is a must.2 We'll hear on this call what we can do to help Senate Democrats stand strong and to pressure key Republicans.

Talk with you Sunday!

And thanks for all you do.
