It's Al Franken, and I'm writing you today because I'm worried. Not about what Donald Trump has tried (and, so far, failed) to do already, like Trumpcare and the Muslim ban. But about the storm that's coming.

You see, we're just 90 days into the Trump presidency. Fortunately, we're also 90 days into a powerful resistance movement.

Up until now, we've been doing surprisingly well stalling Trump's agenda. But the thing is, he's just getting started—so we can't let up for a second. There are so many more fights to come: Stopping Trump's tax breaks for rich people like himself. Standing up to Jeff Sessions' deportation force. Resisting attacks on Medicare and the environment.

And we still have a year and a half before we've got a shot at taking back Congress.

Trump governs by chaos. He wants us to get tired and slow down, but we can't let him win.

My Democratic colleagues and I are counting on you to keep marching, and protesting, and calling. Will you chip in $5 a month to MoveOn to help keep the resistance strong for the next four years?

MoveOn members worked day and night to stop Trump from being elected. And then, the day after the election, MoveOn members began organizing to build the resistance, with vigils around the country. You never stopped.

In fact, after Trump was elected, there was a huge spike in grassroots energy—the biggest I've seen in my entire political career. Record-setting numbers of people flooded the streets. It was impossible to get a call through to Congress (believe me, I know, because my office phone lines were ringing off the hook). And while my Republican colleagues are trying to put on a brave face, I can tell that they are under stress. (And that stress helped defeat their first attempt at Trumpcare!)

But here's what has me worried: We're fighting on so many fronts. And if energy drops off, we'll start losing.

The antidote? Millions of us involved so that together we can continue to organize non-stop. The kind of organizing that MoveOn excels at.

As a senator, even one who's in the minority, there are a lot of things that I can do. I can ask nominees tough and important questions (see: Betsy DeVos, Jeff Sessions, and Neil Gorsuch). I can vote against terrible bills. I can shine a spotlight on the cruel and absurd.

But millions of activists like you, working together through MoveOn, can do even more.

When Republicans in the House tried to get the votes to take health care away from 24 million Americans, it wasn't me who stopped them. It was millions of activists like you.

When Republican town halls were packed, it was with activists like you.

And it was because of activists like you that Congress has been flooded with phone calls—including on the day when House Republicans were supposed to vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, when MoveOn members made 40,000 calls and Republicans couldn't muster the votes for repeal.

Trump deported the first-known DACA recipient

On February 17, Juan Manuel was walking to a taxi stand in his hometown in California when he was approached by border officials who asked for his papers. Though Juan Manuel was legally authorized to live and work in America through the DACA program, he was deported to Mexico just hours later.²

This is a direct consequence of Trump's mass deportation agenda and an unaccountable agency. Juan Manuel, who suffered a traumatic brain injury as a child and has a cognitive disability, must be reunited with his family in California as soon as possible.

In a district where Republicans have won easily for decades, progressive Democrat Jon Ossoff has won a commanding victory tonight, with a first-place finish that will give him much-needed momentum for a likely runoff election in June. And it’s all thanks to you.

When Donald Trump took office just 88 days ago, it was hard to hold onto hope.

Now, Trump is reeling under scandal and investigations, Republicans in Congress are facing down outraged citizens at every town hall, and the GOP plan to take away health care from 24 million Americans is stalled out.

Many Democrats are embracing a bold progressive platform, riding a wave of resistance energy, and now have a real shot of doing what nobody thought was possible: winning back control of Congress in 2018.

So take a minute to celebrate tonight and believe in this resistance movement we've built, because we've still got a long fight ahead of us.

Even before the likely Georgia runoff, in just 37 days, we have the chance to send another Trump-resisting, progressive Democrat to Congress in Montana—progressive cowboy, musician, and poet Rob Quist.

A key part of Jon Ossoff's success was that his campaign was powered by tens of thousands of small donations from progressives across the country. Republican Super PACs poured millions into the race, but Ossoff had the resources to respond to every attack and get out the vote.

MoveOn members stepped up big time too. Over 16,000 of us contributed over $314,000 to help fund Ossoff's campaign. MoveOn members outside the district targeted over 10,000 progressive voters in the district with a texting blitz. Strong member support also allowed us to launch a last-minute ad blitz throughout the district in the final week, highlighting Republican support for the deeply unpopular bill to repeal the ACA.

That's exactly what it'll take to win in Montana. Rob Quist is running a progressive populist campaign in the mold of Bernie Sanders. In fact, Bernie just announced that he will be campaigning alongside Quist throughout the state next month.¹

Here's what Quist says in his great new ad running in Montana now:

"Did you know that in Congress there are are nearly 300 millionaires? No wonder their so-called health care reform was just another tax break for the rich. No wonder they want to sell our public lands to private developers and hand our Social Security to Wall Street. This should not be the millionaires club; this is the House of Representatives."²

Far-right Republican millionaire Greg Gianforte is expected to pour millions of his own money into the Montana race. He spent $6 million of his own money to try to win the Montana governor's race last year but was defeated by five points (even though Trump won the state by 20 points). Right-wing groups are also pouring in money, since they know that this race will go down to the wire. 

And just as we did successfully in Georgia, MoveOn will be mobilizing our 19,000 Montana members to join the Quist campaign, creating powerful videos promoting Quist and holding the Republicans accountable, and using the latest innovations and technology to help get out the vote.

As Jon Ossoff heads to a likely runoff after all the results are in tonight, we'll double down on our efforts supporting him and boosting his bold progressive message.

We know there is more work to do to elect Ossoff, but for tonight, let’s celebrate this victory get right to work on winning the next fight.

Resistance Recess so far

Resistance Recess is going strong for one more week. Check out the action.

What a recess it's already been!

Fired–up voters chanted "You lie" at Representative Joe Wilson over his attempt to take health care away from his constituents and tens of millions of other Americans.

More than 2,000 people showed up for Rep. Greg Walden's first town hall in over four years in Bend, OR, the largest city in his district.

Local and national media have reported on the intense pressure to oppose Trump's agenda that "moderate" Republicans like Mike Coffman of Colorado and Ryan Costello of Pennsylvania have faced.

And just today, Nevada Senator Dean Heller took so much heat from his constituents that he publicly stated support for federal funding for Planned Parenthood, even though he voted two weeks ago to block its Title X funding. 

These are a few of the stories from the hundreds of events in the first week of Resistance Recess. In addition to the town halls, hundreds of thousands of Americans took to the streets at Tax Marches across the country last weekend to demand the truth about Trump's financial entanglements—triggering a defensive tweet from Trump and helping focus media coverage on his scandalous, ongoing failure to release his taxes. And in the coming weeks, there will be wave after wave of mass protest: a Science March, a Climate March, a May 1 mobilization supporting immigrant rights, and rallies across the country this week with Bernie Sanders.

The resistance movement is real, growing, and becoming an electoral force. 

We saw this last week when a Democratic upstart came within a narrow margin of upsetting a Republican in a special election in a deep-red Kansas district. And we see it in the surprisingly strong showing of John Ossoff, who is making a run at Newt Gingrich's old House seat in Georgia in a special election tomorrow to replace Trump's secretary of Health and Human Services, the architect of the attempted repeal of the ACA.

Members of Congress are home for one more week, so don't miss your opportunity to talk with them. Find a local event to confront your representatives in person on issues that matter to you.

Dear MoveOn member,

May Day—long a day for workers' rights and more recently for immigrant rights—will mark an opportunity to renew our commitment to resistance and to stand with frontline communities just after the 100 day mark of the Trump administration. 

Our allies in immigrant communities, including Movimiento Cosecha and the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) amongst others, are leading the way on a day of resistance and solidarity. In the tradition of May Day, many immigrants and their allies will be choosing to strike, while others will boycott, gather, and join in various acts of solidarity.

Over the next few weeks, we will be following up with ways MoveOn members can get involved all across the country. In the meantime, help us spread the word about May 1 by sharing the graphic below.
