A state of emergency in Charlottesville

We, the people of the United States, denounce white supremacy.

Add your name: Denounce white supremacy

We stand united against white supremacy, neo-Nazis, and the "alt-right." We denounce their toxic hate, fear, and violence. We must come together to condemn the ideas that fueled the violence in Charlottesville this weekend.

Dear MoveOn member,

A state of emergency was declared this weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, after hundreds of white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and members of the "alt-right" terrorized the city with toxic hate, fear,  and violence.1

With Donald Trump refusing to condemn the white supremacist hate and violence on open display this weekend, we need to show each other, as people in the United States, that together we are ready to stand against and denounce white supremacy and the ideas that fueled the actions in Charlottesville this weekend.

Sign and share this expression of unity and openly ask your neighbors, friends, and family to stand united against white supremacy today.

Thanks for all you do.

TONIGHT: Stand with #Charlottesville in Inwood

Will you join an emergency vigil tonight or Sunday to stand with the people of Charlottesville and against white supremacy?

Dear MoveOn member,

Can you join a vigil this weekend in solidarity with the people of Charlottesville in response to today’s act of terror by white supremacists? Click here to find a vigil near you. (This link will take you to a partner's site with events around the country. You can also check Facebook and ask your friends, as many events are popping up).

If you haven’t seen the sickening news, here’s a brief recap: Hundreds of neo-Nazis and white supremacists gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia yesterday and today, using the removal of a Confederate statue as an excuse to exhibit their violence. The people of Charlottesville, led by young people, students, and people of color, turned out to stand peacefully against this display of hate. A person, now in custody, plowed a car directly into the crowd of peaceful counter-protestors, killing at least one and injuring at least 19 others.

Donald Trump has refused to use the term white supremacist or to condemn white supremacist violence.

Racial terror and violence is one of our history’s darkest legacies. The struggle to end it is one of the nation’s greatest heritages. Let’s stand united with the people of Charlottesville and generations before us against racism, white supremacy, violence and hate, and continue the work of creating a country that lives up to our ideals.

MoveOn is joining with, Indivisible, Womens’ March, Working Families Party, Democracy for America, PCCC, and other partners in supporting non-violent gatherings of solidarity tonight and Sunday.

Click here to find a vigil or rally near you to stand with the people of #Charlottesville and to #StopWhiteTerrorism.

Also, check Facebook and Twitter and ask your friends; solidarity vigils and events are popping up every minute. People for Bernie is keeping a running list on Twitter here. Or, gather a few friends, make signs, head to your city hall, and snap photos and video and share them using #Charlottesville and #StopWhiteTerrorism.

Thanks for all you do.

North Korea

Click here sign the petition demanding diplomacy first with North Korea, and then pass it along to your friends.

Dear MoveOn member,

Today, Donald Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" against North Korea.1 Already, North Korea has responded—with threats to bomb the U.S. military base in Guam.

Donald Trump is making us all more unsafe with every unhinged comment, tweet, and threat. His rhetoric threatening North Korea is exacerbating a dangerous situation, putting the people of Guam—and everyone around the world—in grave danger. While a nuclear North Korea is a real concern, the answer must be diplomacy first, not a rush to a potentially devastating nuclear war.

Will you join me in demanding a diplomacy first approach, and an end to Trump's saber-rattling, which could lead to nuclear war? Click here to sign the petition, which says:

Stop the insanity. Don't provoke a war with North Korea.

With Donald Trump putting us on a potential pathway toward nuclear war with North Korea, the stakes couldn't be higher.

Please. Click here to sign the petition demanding diplomacy first with North Korea, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks for all you do.

Add your name: Reject Keystone XL

The comment window is open for the last permit needed to build the Keystone-XL tar sands pipeline. Sign the petition now!

Dear MoveOn member,

The Keystone XL needs just one more permit to get the green light to flood the U.S. with more dirty tar sands oil—and we have a key opportunity to stop it!

The Nebraska Public Service Commission is asking for public input on whether to approve pipeline company TransCanada's proposed route through Nebraska's farmland, over the precious Oglala aquifer, and on land seized from native nations opposed to the project. Click here to tell the Nebraska Public Service Commission to reject the Keystone-XL route, and your signature will be delivered in person on Wednesday.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission must reject the TransCanada request to route the Keystone-XL pipeline through the farmlands, native nations, and beautiful natural scenery of Nebraska.

Stopping Keystone is critically important on its merits, and as a lynchpin in our commitment to protect the planet. The local effects of a possible tar sands spill are debilitating—tar sands is thicker and heavier than normal oil, so it sinks and is nearly impossible to clean up—and the current route runs right over one of the key sources of drinking water in the U.S.

On top of that, it would run roughshod over native and landowner rights, using land owned by both against their wishes. And then there's the climate cost, untapping one of the dirtiest sources of energy known to man and setting up decades of path-dependent investment in tar sands, just as we need to be doing everything in our power to get off fossil fuels.

We can have Keystone-XL, or we can have a livable climate; we probably can't have both. Tell the Nebraska Public Service Commission to reject TransCanada's permit to build the Keystone-XL pipeline.

Last year, it looked like we had won—after punting the decision for most of his term and relentless organizing from local groups, President Obama rejected the federal Keystone permit. But then came along Donald Trump, who wasted no time reversing this decision in his very first week in office.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission can still stop the pipeline in its tracks by rejecting the route that pipeline company TransCanada has proposed. Native Nations and local groups in Nebraska are planning a massive mobilization this weekend, ahead of the start of expert testimony next week, to oppose this permit. Let's join them in solidarity by adding our names to the public comment rolls to demand that the Nebraska PSC stand up for the people of Nebraska, the U.S., and the world.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks for all you do.

Marijuana

Will you sign my petition and call on your senators to join me in moving marijuana legalization on the federal level forward?

Add your name to the Marijuana Justice Act, which will remove marijuana from the list of controlled substances and look to reverse the decades of failed policies that disproportionately target communities of color.

Dear MoveOn member,

For decades, the failed War on Drugs has locked up millions of nonviolent drug offenders, especially for marijuana-related offenses. This has wasted human potential, torn apart families and communities, and squandered massive sums of taxpayer dollars.

That's why I introduced the Marijuana Justice Act on Tuesday to call for the legalization of marijuana at the federal level. Will you sign my petition and call on your senators to join me in moving this critical legislation forward?

If passed into law, this would have an immediate impact on our criminal justice system, on policing, on our communities, and even on the economy. This legislation would remove marijuana from the list of controlled substances, making it legal at the federal level.

The bill would also incentivize states to change their marijuana laws if those laws are shown to disproportionately affect low-income individuals and/or people of color. The Marijuana Justice Act would be applied retroactively for those already serving time for marijuana-related offenses, providing for a judge's review of marijuana sentences. That means we could reduce our prison population, a goal that Democrats and Republicans alike have claimed to support.

Add your name to show your support for national marijuana legalization.

States have, so far, led the way in reforming our failed drug policy and in beginning to fix our criminal justice system. Unfortunately, the federal government isn't doing its share—and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, among his many offenses, is working actively to undermine the progress in this area. We can't let Sessions roll back our progress, criminalize more Americans, and terrorize our communities by doubling down on failed policy.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

—Senator Cory Booker

Congress is coming home. Let's deliver a message in person.

Next week is the start of August congressional recess —and it will be an opportunity to speak directly with our members of Congress.

Dear MoveOn member,

Last week, we scored a huge victory, once again stopping the latest incarnation of Trumpcare from taking health care from millions of Americans. It was a testament to the strength of the Resistance—people of all walks of life speaking out directly to their members of Congress.

Now, House members and senators are coming back home for their August recess, and it's our opportunity to bring grassroots pressure to them directly—to their town halls, to their offices, and to other public events. It's our chance to assert that health care is a fundamental right, to hold accountable anyone who voted to take it away, and to remind every member of Congress that THEY WORK FOR US.

Throughout August, MoveOn members and allies are hosting and joining Resistance Recess events.

Together, we will make sure that members of Congress and the media hear that Americans won't tolerate the Trump Republican agenda, including more attacks on our health care, a tax plan to give away billions to the 1%, the Muslim Ban, brutal deportations, Trump's transphobia, and the trampling of our rule of law.

Here’s how it will work:
  • We will show up at our elected officials’ events, town halls, and other public appearances to demand answers to the questions that we, their constituents, deserve to have answered.

  • We will hold Republicans accountable for their support of the attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act—and let them know that we won't let these attacks on health care, our communities, and our democracy go unanswered.

  • We will make it clear to Democrats that progressives demand a forceful, progressive, inclusive, populist agenda—and that resistance isn't enough. We need Democrats to take strong stands and build momentum for policies we want, such as single-payer Medicare for All.
  • And if lawmakers evade public events for their constituents, we will hold our own. For the members of Congress who lack the courage to face their constituents, we will hold "People’s Speak-outs" to highlight to the public and the media the lawmakers who won't even meet with their constituents.

Are you in? Click here to organize an event near you or click here to see if there is already a Resistance Recess action in your area.

This summer, MoveOn and partner organizations have been actively resisting the Trump administration by training and empowering over one thousand MoveOn Mobilizers from all fifty states to show the considerable organizing power of the Resistance, build new movement leadership, and win tangible victories. We know that our efforts are working. Republicans have been stopped yet again from taking away health care from tens of millions of Americans. Some officials in both parties are recognizing the dangerous and potentially unconstitutional actions of Trump and his team. But we need to keep the pressure on to stop the relentless assaults on our communities and our rights—and to make sure all members of Congress know that the Resistance is strong and we all going to keep showing up day after day, week after week, and month after month.

Click here to search for a local Resistance Recess event near you or create your own if there isn’t one.

Thanks for all you do.

—Chris, Gabriela, Justin, Katie, and the rest of the team

P.S. What if there's no event hosted by your lawmakers listed on the site? First, call your representative's and/or senators' district and D.C. offices—and see if they are planning on holding a public town hall or office hours. Then...

If YES, they say that they are holding a town hall or office hours, submit the event here, and we will invite other constituents to join you.

If you discover that your members of Congress are NOT hosting a town hall within a reasonable distance from you, you can host a People’s Speak-out—an event that constituents hold to have their voices heard and highlight their lawmaker's lack of a formal town hall. A People’s Speak-out is a great way to get media attention and elevate the fact that your lawmaker is avoiding constituents during the congressional recess!

How do you plan one?

  • Find a location—such as a library, event space, or even outside a member of Congress’s district office—and pick a time and date.

  • Invite your member of Congress.

  • Click here to post your event on ResistanceRecess.com, and MoveOn and partner groups will invite fellow constituents.

  • Put together an agenda and let the media know.

  • Check our materials page for all the guides and information you need to plan an event.

  • Have an awesome event!

Because every vote matters

Senator Elizabeth Warren is facing a Super PAC that has pledged to spend $10 million to defeat her. Senators Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Sherrod Brown of Ohio are champions of progressive populism, running for reelection in two states that went for Donald Trump.

Dear MoveOn member,

Senator Elizabeth Warren is facing a Super PAC that has pledged to spend $10 million to defeat her. Senators Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Sherrod Brown of Ohio are champions of progressive populism, running for reelection in two states that went for Donald Trump.

Can you imagine how last week's health care vote would have gone without them—or without progressive Senate champions Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, and Chris Murphy of Connecticut, all of whom are up for reelection next year?

That's why, following last Thursday's historic vote, MoveOn members chose to endorse these six senators. They were leaders in the health care fight, and they're also the senators we need to fight for a fair economy and sensible foreign policy, to tackle climate change and gun control, to protect civil rights and human rights, and so much more.

We need to keep these progressive champions in the Senate. Will you chip in $6 now to help reelect them?

Yes, I'll chip in to help reelect these six senators who were heroes in stopping Trumpcare.

These six senators have worked tirelessly to stop Trump's attempts to divide our country, shred our Constitution, and hurt the livelihoods of regular Americans. And they're critical in helping build the progressive agenda we need to see in Washington.

  • Bernie Sanders of Vermont has spent decades leading on progressive issues, from universal health care to publicly funded elections to opposing unjust wars. As we all know, he's been tirelessly rallying Americans to resist Trump and advocate for progressive policies like Medicare for All. He's worked with MoveOn members to defend Social Security and Medicaid and just last month hit the road at MoveOn-sponsored rallies against Trumpcare. Donate now to support his reelection.
  • Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has proven that Democrats can successfully stand up to Wall Street. She helped create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, has forcefully pushed for reforms to student debt, and has worked alongside MoveOn members to tackle income inequality. The Senate tried to silence her outspoken opposition to Jeff Sessions for attorney general in the Senate, but still she persisted. And her vocal criticism of how billionaires have rigged the economy against working people has made her a top target of right-wing groups. Donate now to support her reelection.
  • Sherrod Brown of Ohio is a true champion for working people everywhere. He's leading the fights for a $15 minimum wage and an infrastructure plan that would put millions more Americans to work. He's showing what true populism looks like in a state Trump won handily—and if he can win, it could be a model for how we beat Trump in 2020. Donate now to support his reelection.
  • Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin led on numerous progressive issues in the U.S. House before becoming the first openly gay candidate elected to the Senate in 2012. She's continued championing progressive issues such as universal health care and ending the revolving door for lobbyists in Washington. She's worked with MoveOn members to offer real solutions to tackling Big Money and the conflicts of interest that are poisoning our democracy. And she's in a state that Trump won last year, holding a seat Democrats need to hold on to. Donate now to support her reelection.
  • Mazie Hirono of Hawaii was a leader in the House Progressive Caucus for years before bringing her strong principles to the Senate. Last week, she flew back to Washington, D.C., despite being recently diagnosed with cancer, to speak out powerfully on the floor of the Senate against Trumpcare. She has been an energizing and inspirational voice for MoveOn members in the fight for health care. Donate now to support her reelection.
  • Chris Murphy of Connecticut was elected to the U.S. House in 2006 on an anti-Iraq War platform, and he has been advocating for a more progressive foreign policy in Congress ever since. As a U.S. senator, he championed the diplomatic agreement with Iran and has spoken forcefully about stopping future wars under Trump. And as the senator representing Newtown, he's never been afraid to take on the NRA and call for sensible gun legislation—even holding the Senate floor last summer to raise the alarm about assault weapons after the Orlando shooting. Donate now to support his reelection.

We need all six of these Health Care Heroes to keep fighting against the relentless attacks on Americans' health care and continue to fight to expand quality, affordable health care to more Americans.

But we also need them because the next bills Trump, Mitch McConnell, and Paul Ryan put forward—tax giveaways to the super rich, undermining protections for workers, and assaults on women's rights, voting rights, and immigrant rights—may also be down to the wire and come down to just one vote.

With the Senate this closely divided, every vote matters. We can't lose one vote. And we need these six champions to be in a strong position for their reelection so we can also inspire progressive candidates across the country and expand the playing field to flip other Senate and House seats.

So let's send a message today: If you are willing to fight for health care, fight for regular Americans, and fight against the Trump/McConnell agenda, we've got your back.

Will you chip in $6 now to reelect these six progressive leaders?

Yes, I'll donate right now to help reelect Senators Sanders, Warren, Brown, Baldwin, Hirono, and Murphy.

Thanks for all you do.
