GOP senators sick with COVID-19 could be "wheeled in" to vote for Amy Coney Barrett

At least three senators are currently positive for COVID-19. Many others may have been exposed at the very event that announced Amy Coney Barrett's nomination.

Dear MoveOn member,

Over the weekend, after it was announced that three Republican senators had tested positive for COVID-19, Mitch McConnell shut down most of the Senate's activities until October 19 but made it clear that—come hell or high water—Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation hearings would still move forward as scheduled starting on October 12.1 At the same time, Senator Tom Cotton suggested that Republican senators sick with the coronavirus could be "wheeled in" to the Senate chamber to vote on her confirmation, in order to make sure it goes through before Election Day.2

Read that again. Take that in. Republicans are saying that it's too dangerous for the Senate to continue normal business, including voting on coronavirus relief bills, but not too dangerous to jam through Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation. And that if they have to, they will risk infecting every other member of the Senate, staffers, drivers, security personnel, and others by bringing sick senators into the chamber to vote for her.

That is how far they are willing to go. And it is despicable.

We won't let them get away with it without a fight. A week ago, it seemed that there was little that could be done to stop Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation, but the news over the past few days has changed everything and is yet another reason why her confirmation MUST be stopped.

We are doing everything we can to demand that Republicans do what's right and that Democrats do whatever they can to stop this process in its tracks over the next few weeks. Will you chip in $3 a week to power this critically important work? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Count me in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Here is where we stand:

  • Last week, it appeared that Mitch McConnell had the votes to force through this nomination, with only Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski coming forward to say that they would vote against a nominee this close to an election.3
  • As of this morning, three Republican senators—Mike Lee, Thom Tillis, and Ron Johnson—have tested positive for COVID-19. Both Lee and TIllis are on the Judiciary Committee and would be required to vote in person to advance Barrett's nomination from the committee to a full vote on the floor and then again to confirm her.4,5
  • Although senators can participate in the committee hearing remotely, a majority of the committee must be present in order to vote on her nomination and advance it to the floor of the Senate.6

If either Sen. Lee or Sen. Tillis cannot be there in person to vote and Democrats on the committee boycott the hearing, the committee will not have the quorum needed for a vote on her nomination.7 Or if both Tillis and Lee are unable to be there in person to vote, the committee would be tied at 10-10, and Senate rules do not allow for a tiebreaker.8

While both of those scenarios are possible, it is shocking and unacceptable that we even need to think through them. At least three senators are currently positive for COVID-19. Many others may have been exposed at the very event that announced Amy Coney Barrett's nomination.

Clearly, the only pathway forward is for this nomination process to be put on pause. It is morbid and disgraceful for it to move forward under these circumstances.

We need to do everything we can to push Democrats, who have the power to force procedural votes to slow or stop this process, and to ensure that Republicans know that if they move forward with this nomination, we will hold them accountable for their actions at the ballot box.

Will you chip in $3 a week to keep this work going, Mar? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Count me in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

The news over the past few days has been absolutely flabbergasting. At least 28 White House staff and close allies of Donald Trump—including Trump himself—have tested positive for COVID-19.9 Many were likely infected at a super-spreader event hosted by the White House, in flagrant violation of the government's own safety protocols.

But everyone who was infected at that event has access to high-quality health care to help them recover. Trump has been given a cocktail of experimental treatments not available to the millions of other Americans who have been infected. And others have admitted themselves to the hospital as a "precaution," unlike so many in our country who were turned away from emergency rooms and told to come back only if and when they could barely breathe.

And that is exactly the type of health care policy that Trump, the GOP, and Amy Coney Barrett support: top-quality care for the wealthy, scraps for the rest of us.

And it is precisely why Barrett cannot take a seat on the Supreme Court. She will vote to strip health care from millions, in the middle of a pandemic that has now reached the highest office in our country.

A week ago, this didn't look like a fight we could win. But everything has changed. Will you help us run full speed ahead to protect the Supreme Court by chipping in $3 a week? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Count me in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Thanks for all you do.

You can protect our election results this November

It's up to us, not Donald Trump, whether he stays in the White House.

Dear MoveOn member,

Donald Trump's re-election prospects are plummeting. A poll conducted after his unhinged debate performance showed him trailing Biden by 14 points—and that was before news that he had contracted COVID after months of flouting rudimentary safety measures like mask-wearing.1

If Trump can't win the election, his path to hold on to power would be to attempt to ignore the democratic vote and overturn the election results.

But here's the thing: Donald Trump doesn't get to decide who our next president is. We do. People are already voting by the millions across the country (including by mail!).2 It is critical that everyone vote and that we vote as early as possible. It is also equally important that we demand that every vote be counted.

Can you sign up to Protect the Results and commit to taking nonviolent action if Trump seeks to overthrow the will of the people?

At last week's debate Donald Trump again failed to clear the most basic bar of democratic leadership: He refused to honor the will of the people in the election's outcome.3 He knows that people voting early in this election are less likely to support him, so he is trying to delegitimize our votes.

Fortunately, the outcome of the election isn't up to Donald Trump. It's up to us. MoveOn members like you are giving our all to win this election. And Trump knows that. He knows that if we all come together, he's going to lose—so he's desperately posturing to sow confusion.

Together, we're stronger than Trump. That's why, in addition to our full-throttled get-out-the-vote effort over the next 28 days, we are also committed to safeguarding our democracy in case Trump refuses to accept defeat. Can you sign up with Protect the Results and commit to taking nonviolent action if Trump seeks to block our votes or deny the election results?

MoveOn is joining Indivisible, Stand Up America, the Service Employees International Union, United We Dream Action, Sierra Club, among more than 100 other partners, in a concerted effort to protect the results, because we know Trump is desperate not to be revealed for what he is, a loser who is incapable of being the president we need—and we have to be just as determined and prepared to protect the outcome of the record-high voting we'll see this year.

Trump's comments at the debate are only the latest evidence that he is flailing as he sees the increasing energy to get him out of office—from the hundreds of thousands of people newly registered to vote to the widespread acknowledgement of his failures on COVID-19 and the economy to the record turnout in early voting in states where people are already casting their ballots.4,5,6 Polls following the debate showed him struggling further, and through his COVID-19 infection so far, he's shown he will continue to be erratic and dangerous in his words and actions.

We have the power to defeat him and elect a new president and Senate that will move us forward together. We're mobilizing MoveOn members across the country to generate massive turnout over the next 28 days in order to win by a commanding margin. Our vote is power, and they fear that power, which is why they are trying so hard to stop us and plant the idea that Trump gets to decide whose votes count.

So even as you give your all over the next 28 days to get out the vote, and as you push the Senate to stop Trump from ramming through a Supreme Court nominee (including demanding Democrats use every tool they have to stall this blitz), you can also make a plan for November 4 to protect the results.

Sign up for Protect the Results now to commit to joining a local action near you after November 3 to make sure that everyone is counted.

People everywhere are preparing to overcome Trump's antidemocratic ambitions. Eleven Democratic governors, including the governors of battleground states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, have already responded to Trump's effort to undermine democracy, by committing to ensure that every vote cast in their states is counted.7 But we've got to do our part, from now until the election is called, to make sure that everyone votes and that those votes, not Trump himself, decide the next president.

Thanks for all you do.

P.S. Like we said, before we worry about protecting results, we have to achieve the results we want by getting everyone we know to be a voter! Sign up to be a Vote Mobilizer today to help make sure your friends and family members in key states are voters.

Texas needs your help, Mar

I am sure you've been hearing this a lot, but I will repeat it because it's true: This is the most important election of our lifetimes.

Dear MoveOn member,

I am sure you've been hearing this a lot, but I will repeat it because it's true: This is the most important election of our lifetimes.

In just 29 days, we not only have the chance to finally put an end to Donald Trump's disastrous presidency and end Mitch McConnell's cruel reign in the Senate but to also expand our majority in the House of Representatives by electing a group of young progressive leaders who will fight for the values we all share.

And the path to expanding that majority runs directly through my beloved home state: Texas.

I'm writing to you today to tell you about three inspiring candidates in my state who are all running to flip their districts blue and to continue to build our progressive coalition in the House.

Their names are Sri Preston Kulkarni, Candace Valenzuela, and Gina Ortiz Jones, and I am so proud that in just a matter of days they could all be elected to represent my fellow Texans.

I'll tell you more about each of their incredible stories in a moment, but first I need to ask: With just 29 days left until the last votes are cast in this election, can you chip in $3 to help put their campaigns over the top? 100% of your donation will be split evenly between their campaigns.

Sri was born and raised in Houston to a middle-class family, and when his father was diagnosed with leukemia when Sri was just 18, he left college to return home to help pay the bills and take care of his siblings. That experience instilled in Sri a deep understanding of how important access to health care is for everyone, and in Congress he will fight to defend and expand access to health care to folks in Texas and around the country.

Sri's opponent is a proud supporter of Trump's administration and has pushed far-right conspiracy theories to discourage voting by mail.1

Candace Valenzuela was born in my hometown of El Paso and has overcome extraordinary odds all her life. After experiencing homelessness as a teenager, Candace persevered and became the first member of her family to graduate from college. As a member of Congress, Candace will fight for much-needed gun violence prevention legislation, will do what it takes to tackle the climate crisis, and will work to defend immigrants and refugees. If elected, she will become the first-ever Black Latina in Congress.2

Candace's opponent wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, stripping health care away from millions of people, and has repeatedly voiced her support for the barbaric immigration policies put in place by the Trump administration.3

Gina Ortiz Jones is an Air Force veteran who ran against an incumbent Republican in 2018 and lost by fewer than 1,000 votes.4 This time around, she is ready to win. The daughter of an immigrant, Gina is dedicated to protecting the rights of marginalized communities and will fight for immigration reform and to ensure that quality health care is available to everyone around the country. Republicans have been mercilessly attacking Gina, including posting disgusting messages encouraging attacks on her and her partner because they are members of the LGBTQ community.5

Gina's opponent is a Trump-endorsed hard-right conservative who wants to overturn Roe v. Wade.6

Sri, Candace, and Gina represent the true heart and diversity of Texas, and they will be three powerful, much-needed voices advocating for every single one of us—in and outside of Texas—in Congress.

Mar, will you join me and chip in $3 now, split evenly between their campaigns?

I know Texas, and I believe in the potential for my state to flip blue.

When I ran for the Senate in 2018, we got more votes than any other Democratic candidate for Senate had ever gotten before in the state, and we did it by visiting every single county in the state and energizing a new wave of leaders and voters who are getting engaged and helping to change the future of Texas.

Sri, Candace, and Gina are three of these new leaders, and by electing them, we will help move both Texas and the country forward.

Join me and chip in $3 to push their campaigns over the top in these final days.

Thanks for all you do.

Dear MoveOn member,

It's true what they say: If your vote didn't matter, they wouldn't be trying so hard to stop you from using it.

Your vote is powerful—and inspiring a new generation of voters to use that power to vote for progress, hope, and liberation is one of the most important things we can do to make sure that we make Donald Trump's presidency nothing more than a footnote in history.

That's why MoveOn has gone big on our "Your Vote Is Power" campaign, an innovative project to reach young voters, voters of color, and others who have been left out by the process, to be inspired and mobilized to cast a ballot—some for the very first time. This campaign has been driven by beautiful and powerful art—designed by up-and-coming artists from across the country—and we've been sharing these designs with you over the past few months to give you an opportunity to claim your part of the campaign.

Ignore national polls. Trump can STILL win the Electoral College.

Polling experts say Trump still has about a 20% chance of winning this election, and a 20% chance of four more years of Trump is way too much.

Dear MoveOn member,

At the beginning of the year, we knew our top priority in 2020 would be defeating Donald Trump for re-election. In fact, we'd spent much of 2019 planning for this fight.

Then COVID-19 hit, and most of the grassroots tactics we planned to use went straight out the window.

Indoor rallies? Can't do it. Not safe. Meetups at people's homes and coffee shops? Forget it. All of the tried-and-true tactics for contacting voters and getting out the vote suddenly had to be scrapped, forcing us to reinvent our entire campaign model while staring down the most dangerous election of our lives.

Then something amazing happened: We found a campaign approach that's not only safe but as much as 10 times more effective than what we've done in the past.1

We're calling it "polling place vote mobilization," and if we can raise enough money to go really big, it has the potential to increase Biden's share of the vote in critically important swing states and tip the key races needed to end Mitch McConnell's control of the Senate—all while keeping all of us safe and healthy.

With only 30 days to go in the election, will you start a $3 weekly donation right now to help run this game-changing program in the most important battleground states? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Count me in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Here's how polling place vote mobilization works:

On Election Day in heavily Democratic precincts in key battleground states, organizers stand outside polling places, speak to voters as they come out, and ask them to text their friends, urging them to vote as well.

It's that simple. Several organizers can team up to cover a single polling place, and as more and more people start texting, one single organizer can typically generate 40-50 voter contacts per hour—10 times what they would get going door to door or calling on the phone. It works at in-person early voting places too, which many states allow.

There are a few key reasons why this works so well:

  1. It's much more effective for a voter to be contacted by a friend than by a campaign or a stranger. When a friend asks if you've voted yet and what your plan is, there's a subtle but powerful social influence because of the implied accountability if you get "caught" not doing what you said you were going to do. Many studies have shown that this is effective.2
  2. People are most willing to contact their friends and urge them to vote right after they've voted themselves. Think about it: When you go to vote and put on that little sticker, it feels really good, right? If it's an important election, you probably walk out of the polling place feeling pretty pumped. It's something researchers call a "civic high," and if we can contact tens of thousands of voters right at that moment, the results will be huge.
  3. It's safe. Volunteers can do this while wearing a mask, avoid engaging voters who aren't masking, and still contact plenty of people.

When COVID-19 hit, we were hoping that we'd be able to come up with socially distanced tactics that would be at least close to as effective as door-to-door canvassing. But they say necessity is the mother of invention, and when we were forced to scrap our plans and start over, we came up with something even better.

Will you start a $3 weekly donation to help fund this groundbreaking get-out-the-vote strategy? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Count me in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Listen, Mar, the latest polls show that this election is still way too close to call in key battleground states like Florida and Arizona. Polling experts say Trump still has about a 20% chance of winning this election, and a 20% chance of four more years of Trump is way too much.3

This isn't just a contest between Trump and Biden; democracy itself is on the ballot. If there was any remaining doubt, Tuesday's debate confirmed it.

We are 100% committed to winning this election—and doing so without putting MoveOn members at risk. Polling place vote mobilization is the perfect breakthrough we needed to do just that.

Start a $3 weekly donation now to help power our nationwide polling place voter mobilization effort to defeat Donald Trump and stay safe at the same time. (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

These limited-edition magnets are almost gone!

During his shameful performance during Tuesday night's debate, Donald Trump once again refused to say that he would accept the results of the election and made it clear that if the results were close, he would use the Supreme Court to try to steal the election.

Dear MoveOn member,

During his shameful performance during Tuesday night's debate, Donald Trump once again refused to say that he would accept the results of the election and made it clear that if the results were close, he would use the Supreme Court to try to steal the election.

But here's the deal: We have the power to decide who our next president will be, and we can stop Republican attempts to steal the election by delivering a victory so large that no one, not even Trump's cronies, can refute it.

And to do that, we need to make sure that every single person who can casts a ballot in the next 32 days.

One of the best pathways to a landslide victory is by inspiring and mobilizing young voters and voters of color to turnout in record numbers, which is why MoveOn launched the "Your Vote Is Power" campaign—an innovative cultural campaign that carries empowering messages about voting, combatting the cynicism and disinformation pushed by the right that persuade far too many people to sit out.

We've tested this messaging, and the results are compelling: When our Your Vote Is Power content reaches our target audiences, it makes them more likely to vote.

We're spreading these messages through powerful art created by up-and-coming artists, and we've printed a small number of these designs as special, limited-edition magnets that you can proudly display as part of the campaign.

We have only a few of these magnets left, so click here to order one before they're all gone!

By ordering a magnet, you will help fuel the final stretch of our campaign to mobilize young voters and voters of color in battleground states across the country to cast their ballots, get their friends and family to cast their ballots, and help ensure that come November 3, Donald Trump and his GOP enablers are handed the pink slips they have earned.

Be a part of the Your Vote Is Power campaign by ordering a limited-edition magnet now, before they're all gone.

Thanks for all you do.

Don't despair

We have 33 days to end this disaster of a presidency, take the Senate gavel from Mitch McConnell, and put our country on a path toward progress.

Dear MoveOn member,

We have 33 days to end this disaster of a presidency, take the Senate gavel from Mitch McConnell, and put our country on a path toward progress.

As maddening as it was to hear Donald Trump gloat at the debate on Tuesday night about his nomination of arch-conservative Amy Coney Barrett to fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat, this is not a time to despair, because we CAN turn the tables—and very soon.

Yes, it's grotesque that Trump, Mitch McConnell, and the GOP Senate are working to ram through a right-wing Supreme Court pick before they get coronavirus relief to their constituents.

Yes, Amy Coney Barrett would cement a 6-3 far-right conservative majority on the court to strike down the Affordable Care Act within days of the election, overturn Roe v. Wade, and much more.1

And, yes, Amy Coney Barrett would be the FIFTH justice on the Supreme Court nominated by a president who lost the popular vote and confirmed by GOP senators representing a minority of Americans, when President Obama's pick was denied a vote for over a year.

But imagine for a moment what we can do if we sweep this election mere weeks from now—winning the presidency, the Senate, and the House. Instead of feeling profound despair, we can strengthen the democracy the GOP has subverted, including reforming the Supreme Court so it better reflects the will of the people.

And that's exactly why I'm writing to you today. To plead with you not to lose hope or fall into cynicism but to turn your anguish into action—while there's still time.

As I often say, MoveOn's track record of success in powering massive get-out-the-vote efforts and winning elections is exceptional. But MoveOn's resources come from its members, tens of thousands of people chipping in what they can.

With only 33 days left in this election and our democracy on the line, will you chip in $3 a week to MoveOn to power their huge get-out-the-vote programs in this final stretch? (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Count me in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Mar, MoveOn has shown us their plans for the final 33 days, and I have to tell you, I think it's exactly what we need in these final weeks before voting ends.

Here is just some of what they have planned for the final sprint toward Election Day:

  • Continuing their work to identify, inspire, and turn out "high-potential voters." MoveOn has been laser-focused on identifying and turning out voters in the most important Senate and presidential battleground states, via advanced analytics and digital outreach. These are the voters we urgently need to reach—the ones deciding whether to vote or stay home. These programs will all continue full-tilt until every vote has been cast.
  • Scaling up their highly effective voter turnout program with a new and powerful tactic. MoveOn has recruited hundreds of thousands of voters to sign pledges to get three of their friends and family to also vote in the election—which research shows is three times more effective than even canvassing.2 In the final stretch, MoveOn and its allies are expanding this program by positioning canvassers at polling places in key Democratic precincts in battleground states. They will talk with voters immediately after they leave the voting booth and ask them to text three of their friends or family to make sure they get out to vote too. Tests during the primaries have shown that this program is even more effective than the digital version and could be the difference between winning and losing in battleground states.3
  • Holding get-out-the-vote digital rallies and volunteer events. MoveOn members will be coming together every week to volunteer their time to call and text voters in these crucial final days, using people power to combat the lies from the right and building the movement we need to win across the country on Election Day. We all remember how meaningful MoveOn's national conference calls and trainings were in the early days of 2017 and again in the lead-up to the 2018 blue wave—and I'm looking forward to these next mobilizing events.
  • Ensuring that the GOP Senate hypocrites who are trying to force through this Supreme Court nomination reap the consequences at the ballot box. MoveOn is doing everything possible to stop Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation and to defeat Republican senators in battleground states—from raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Jaime Harrison who is running neck and neck with Lindsey Graham in South Carolina to sending mobile billboards and airplanes calling out the failures of Thom Tillis in North Carolina and Martha McSally in Arizona to supporting Sara Gideon in Maine, Theresa Greenfield in Iowa, Reverend Raphael Warnock in Georgia, Steve Bullock in Montana, and more candidates with its people-powered volunteer and fundraising efforts.

Don't wake up on Election Day wishing you had done more. Right now is our chance to change our nation's course. But it's going to take each and every one of us. We have 33 days. Then our opportunity will be gone.

It's up to us now. Please join me and chip in $3 a week. (MoveOn will bill your weekly donation to your credit card once a month starting today and will contact you shortly after the election to see if you want to modify or cancel your weekly donation.)

Count me in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in weekly.

Hold your head high. We can turn the tide—and in just a few short weeks. I believe in you and what we can accomplish together.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich
