This race is neck and neck

Dear MoveOn member,

We just got some very troubling polling news from the state of Maine, and we need to respond right now.

Here's the deal: Just three weeks ago, Susan Collins was trailing by as much as 12 points in the polls and appeared to be losing momentum.

But Susan Collins has come back, using some of the most vicious, despicable, Trump-style lies that Maine politics has ever seen. And the latest poll shows Collins closing the gap and trailing her Democratic opponent, Sara Gideon, by just 1 point.¹

Collins and her GOP backers are diving into the gutter with appalling TV ads and mailers falsely accusing her opponent of protecting a state legislator who was accused of sexual assault. It's such a baldfaced lie that it's literally the exact opposite of the truth: Sara Gideon was the first person to call on the accused legislator to resign from office—before any Republican or Susan Collins herself—and he did.²

Meanwhile, what did Susan Collins do when she heard Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony about being assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh? She cast the deciding vote to confirm him. And what has she done about the sexual predator in the White House, who has admitted to grabbing women's genitals and been credibly accused by more than two dozen women of sexual assault and rape? She's been one of his biggest enablers and voted to acquit him of impeachment.

It's shameless and disgusting. But negative attacks work. That's why politicians do them. We need to help Sara Gideon fight back and win.

The lights are flashing red in this crucial race, and we're not just reacting to one poll. In fact, public, nonpartisan polls have been tightening for weeks.

Three weeks ago, the respected Quinnipiac University poll had Susan Collins trailing in the Maine U.S. Senate race by a whopping 12 points. A week later, another nonpartisan poll came out with Sara Gideon's lead down to 7 points. Then, on September 25, the A-rated Suffolk University poll had the race at 5 points.³

And now, Critical Insights, a well-respected Maine-based pollster, has Collins behind by just 1 point—a statistical tie when you factor in the margin of error.⁴

The Maine Senate race is one of the key tipping-point races that will decide control of the U.S. Senate. It's not impossible for Democrats to take back the Senate while losing Maine, but it's a lot harder.⁵ That's why Mitch McConnell has been pouring money into the state and why Collins is going so far into the gutter to save her seat.⁶

We need to make sure Sara Gideon has the resources to fight back against Susan Collins's heinous, despicable lies.

I believe that we will win

Dear MoveOn member,

We have 25 days left in this election to inspire, mobilize, and protect the vote—and show that while the Trump administration may create chaos and divisiveness, we are the ones who will be authors of the next chapter of our story.

Yes, Donald Trump, presumably still infected with the coronavirus and panicking as he faces the prospect of defeat, is behaving in bizarre, reckless, and destructive ways that are extreme even for him. Meanwhile, COVID infections skyrocket and layoffs continue on a massive scale, but Republicans' priority remains packing the Supreme Court so they can overturn the Affordable Care Act. It gets worse: Just yesterday, we learned 13 white nationalist militants had been caught plotting to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and kill law enforcement officers, a sign of the ongoing harm being done by Trump's embrace of white nationalism and incitement of violence.

But Donald Trump doesn't get to decide our future. We do. And that's the part of the story that makes me more optimistic than I have been in a long time.

As MoveOn's executive director, I have a window into the world that not everyone gets to see every day. It is the more-often untold story of why we are going to win and build a stronger world together.

And it is a story I want you to see, because it is the story of our collective power.

MoveOn is full steam ahead with our America for All election campaign, and along with the power you bring, we're driving a three-part people-powered strategy to win, which we call "mobilize, inspire, protect."

First, we're mobilizing a massive grassroots army of people to volunteer, contribute to candidates, and organize others to turn out to vote.

More than 500,000 MoveOn members like you have volunteered to encourage and support friends and family members to get out and vote. Studies show that there is simply nothing more effective than a friend reaching out to a friend about voting. Voters are 2.5 times more likely to be persuaded to vote by a friend than by a stranger. Remember, we lost the 2016 election by only 79,316 votes. And in critical swing states like Michigan, this averaged out to losing by only two votes per precinct. This means that the margin of victory is within each of our networks. We are well on the way toward our goal of 1 million MoveOn members taking responsibility for turning out at least three voters each, which could mean the difference in the election.

MoveOn members are also powering our election work by texting over 2 million voters a day, responding to hundreds of thousands of emails from fellow members, and hosting and vetting almost 1,000 physically distanced, masks-required events that have shown our people power all across the country.

We are pooling our collective financial power to fuel the campaigns of MoveOn-endorsed candidates. Together, MoveOn members have raised more than $4 million for endorsed candidates, including more than $500,000 for Jaime Harrison, who is now neck and neck with Lindsey Graham in the race for the Senate seat in South Carolina.

And we are pulling together the power of our voices. I started a petition the night of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's passing, to honor her legacy and demand that a new justice not be confirmed until after the next president is inaugurated. To date, a remarkable 1.5 million of you have signed. And more than 50,000 of us have made calls to the Senate opposing a rushed confirmation.

Second, we're inspiring new voters to vote this election cycle through cultural campaigning and targeted communications.

We've identified more than 7 million "high-potential voters" in presidential and Senate battleground states, people who aren't certain to vote but who are likely to vote for Democrats if they do. We then worked with experts and tested messaging to determine what would persuade these potential voters to turn out. And now we're carrying out that messaging.

Our Your Vote Is Power culture campaign has reached a wide audience that doesn't usually engage in politics, through art, memes, GIFs, podcast ads, celebrity engagement, and by driving hashtags like #YourVoteIsPower and #OurVoteIsPower to trend on Twitter with thousands of people sharing their own voting stories.

Our Creative Lab has now produced and tested more than 30 different videos to help boost turnout among high-potential voters, and we've found several of the videos had a statistically significant positive impact. Now, thanks to contributions from members like you, we're carrying the winning content to swing-state viewers through a large digital media buy.

The record amounts of small-dollar contributions we're raising from MoveOn members enabled us to launch an additional $2 million independent expenditure effort just yesterday. The effort includes TV, radio, and digital ads supporting Jaime Harrison in South Carolina, Sara Gideon in Maine, and Mark Kelly in Arizona. Check out Politico's story on yesterday's launch, and today's New York Times story on one of our ads supporting Harrison.

We're carrying our messaging in other ways too. For example, our social media posts have already been seen more than 500 million times this election cycle, and we've distributed more than 2 million stickers to MoveOn members so we can proudly display our values to others.

Third, we're hard at work to protect the integrity of the election.

We've all heard about the disinformation campaigns run by people and entities who seek to undermine the integrity of the election and suppress Democratic voters—and Black voters in particular. Our investigations team has been tracking down those spreading disinformation and running campaigns to stop them in their tracks, including getting them banned from social media platforms like Facebook.

Our #SaveThePostOffice campaign this summer, including a nationwide mobilization of hundreds of physically distanced actions outside post offices (thanks to those of you who participated!), added to pressure on Trump's appointees and played a role in forcing them to back away from changes that were slowing mail delivery, so we can be more confident that ballots cast via vote-by-mail will be prioritized, handled securely, and delivered on time.

We're now gearing up as part of a coalition called Protect the Results, to be prepared for massive, nonviolent mobilizations after November 3 if they are needed to ensure every vote is counted. Despite what Donald Trump says, he doesn't get to determine the winner of the election. We do, with our votes. The work we are doing in advance to prepare for multiple potential post-election scenarios will help ensure that remains true.

And I'm not even done, but I'll spare you more details. Point is, there is SO much incredible work being fueled by members like you, and it all adds up to one massive fireball of energy committed to defeating Trump, electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, taking the Senate, and expanding our majority in the House. MoveOn's membership is big, and it is diverse—and two things we have in common are our commitment to a better future and our remarkable level of engagement in this election.

All that said, we can't get overconfident, or let up one iota. The Electoral College is skewed against us, Republican state governments are hard at work to suppress the vote, we already know Trump plans to try to undermine the results, and we all remember 2016, when pre-election polling turned out to be painfully inaccurate. Now is no time to become complacent.

But I truly do believe that an increasingly large, multiracial majority in this country rejects Trump and what he stands for and is preparing to vote in the largest-turnout election in American history. And that MoveOn members have played a big role in getting us where we are today. Let's keep it up. If you have more time over the next 25 days, volunteer with MoveOn or a candidate or organization of your choosing. If you have more money you can spare, chip in in to fund get-out-the-vote work. And most importantly, if you have friends or family, please talk to them about this election and do all you can to persuade them to vote, and please make sure you have your own plan to vote. HUGE announcement!

Dear MoveOn member,

There are only 26 days left in the 2020 race, and Donald Trump and the GOP are absolutely scrambling.

Trump's poll numbers nationally and in key swing states are tanking, and now it seems that his increasingly erratic behavior and lies may just be the final straw that takes the GOP-controlled Senate down with him.^1,2

We cannot let this golden opportunity to secure a Democratic Senate at the same time that we defeat Trump slip through our fingers, and with so little time left in the race, this is the moment to go big or go home.

Which is why MoveOn has just announced that we are investing $2 million in a massive ad blitz across three key Senate states to defeat Martha McSally in Arizona, Susan Collins in Maine, and Lindsey Graham in South Carolina.

This campaign is funded entirely by small dollar donations from MoveOn members, and our ability to keep the ads up, run them during primetime, and make sure that the right voters see them is entirely up to members like you. Winning these three Senate races is the key to ending Mitch McConnell's despicable reign in the Senate, and although the numbers look good, don't fool yourself into thinking that our work is done in these races.

In Arizona, Democrat Mark Kelly—former astronaut and the husband of former congresswoman and gun control activist Gabby Giffords—is fighting to defeat Martha McSally, a Trump loyalist who lost her last race for Senate in 2018, only to be appointed to the Senate weeks later by the state's Republican governor. Kelly is leading McSally in the polls, but that is no guarantee in this traditionally Republican-leaning state, and you can rest assured the GOP and their billionaire backers are pouring millions in to prop up McSally.³

Our ads in Arizona are aimed at motivating the state's large population of young Latinx voters to vote for Joe Biden and Mark Kelly to build a safer, more equitable future for the people of Arizona and all of us across the country.

In Maine, Sara Gideon is deadlocked with Susan Collins in one of the most highly anticipated races of the year. Until recently, Collins was thought to be untouchable in Maine—having won her last race for re-election by more than 30 points—but her despicable decision to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court showed the truth: Her "moderate" identity is a facade, and she has turned her back on the voters in Maine.⁴ Gideon has been leading Collins, but the most recent poll shows her lead shrinking as Collins pulls out all the stops to save her political life, which means we cannot afford to give an inch in these final days.⁵

Our ads in Maine will remind voters that Collins has voted with Trump 95% of the time, and a vote to keep her in office is a vote to continue Mitch McConnell's obstruction in the Senate.

And then there is South Carolina. Earlier this week, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report moved the Senate race between Jaime Harrison and Lindsey Graham to the "toss up" category, a change that would have been nearly unthinkable just a few months ago.⁶ South Carolina has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1998, but Jaime Harrison now looks poised to defeat Trump's number one lap dog. But this race will come down to the wire, as Republican megadonors have dumped millions into the state in a last-minute effort to save Graham's seat as he works simultaneously to confirm far-right Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.⁷

Our ads in South Carolina are aimed at reminding the state's Black voters that Lindsey Graham's effort to ram through Amy Coney Barrett aims to install her on the bench in time to hear a court case that could end the Affordable Care Act and rip health care away from millions of Americans in the middle of the biggest pandemic in 100 years.⁸

We want these messages to reach as many voters as possible and to keep them on the air and online through Election Day. Can you help make that happen by starting a weekly $3 donation now?

On Tuesday, in the midst of a nonstop and incoherent tweet storm, Donald Trump abruptly announced that he would no longer negotiate a deal to pass any coronavirus relief for families struggling to get by until after the election was over, and he demanded instead that Senate Republicans focus solely on confirming Amy Coney Barrett—even though at least three Republican senators are currently sick with COVID-19.⁹

In the days since, he has flip-flopped over and over again on that decision, but with so few days left until the election and Mitch McConnell's hold on power slipping, it is clear that installing an illegitimate candidate to the Supreme Court is the only thing that matters to the GOP—not protecting families from eviction, ensuring that everyone has access to free testing for the coronavirus, or providing desperately needed funding for cities and states hit hard by the pandemic.¹⁰

It is a disgusting act of a party that has given up even attempting to pretend that they care about the American people.

Under no circumstances can McConnell remain in charge of the Senate. Our ads will help motivate the voters we need to finally close this shameful chapter in our nation's history, but we need your help to make this closing argument to the people of Arizona, Maine, and South Carolina.

Something amazing is happening in Georgia

Dear MoveOn member,

Something amazing is happening in Georgia. Reverend Raphael Warnock—the civil rights leader, senior pastor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, and now Democratic Senate candidate—is ahead in the polls and surging!¹

Candidates like Rev. Warnock do not come along very often.

President Barack Obama just endorsed Rev. Warnock, as have Stacey Abrams, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, the late Congressman John Lewis, and MoveOn members in Georgia.^2,3

If Rev. Warnock wins, he would be the first Black senator from Georgia ever and the first Democratic senator elected from Georgia in two decades. And this seat could very well determine whether we flip the Senate blue, finally take the Senate gavel from Mitch McConnell, reform the Supreme Court, and start passing hundreds of House-passed bills that McConnell sent to his "legislative graveyard."⁴

Rev. Warnock is challenging Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler, an ardent Trump supporter and former Wall Street executive who sold off $20 million in stock after learning in a closed-door Senate briefing that the pandemic could crash the economy.⁵ Loeffler was not elected by the people of Georgia but was appointed by Republican Governor Brian Kemp. As the wealthiest member of the Senate, Loeffler is spending $20 million of her personal fortune to try to hold on to her seat.⁶

Rev. Warnock is gaining ground but urgently needs our help to fight off Loeffler's massive war chest and turn out voters all across the state.

Rev. Warnock doesn't just understand the struggles of working people in Georgia; he's lived them.

He grew up in a housing project in Savannah, GA, one of 12 children.⁷ When he enrolled at Morehouse College, Rev. Warnock didn't know how he would pay the full tuition. With the help of low-interest student loans and Pell Grants, he graduated, earned a Ph.D., and was ordained in the ministry. Fifteen years ago, he was chosen to serve as senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, the youngest pastor selected to serve in that leadership role at the historic church.

Rev. Warnock believes his impact does not stop at the church door and has been a powerful and effective organizer in his community and beyond.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

For months, as the COVID-19 pandemic raged, Donald Trump and members of his administration refused to wear masks and take other safety precautions against the deadly virus at the White House. And now, they're putting the lives and livelihoods of the White House staff at even greater risk.

Even after Trump, his wife, and many White House officials tested positive for COVID-19 last week, the dangerous working conditions inside the executive mansion did not change.¹

Especially at risk from Trump's refusal to take the deadly disease seriously are the White House residence staff members, many of whom are older and Black, Latino, or Filipino—some of the most vulnerable populations in the pandemic.²

Trump and the first lady interact with dozens of the residence staff every day, and the Trumps' blatant disregard for their safety puts the staff members and their families at great risk. The residence staff or their families could be exposed to COVID-19 in the White House, but, as Deesha Dyer, the White House social secretary under President Barack Obama noted, "They don't have the privilege of being Marine One–ed to Walter Reed" if they get sick.³

Trump's reckless behavior is endangering White House employees. Sign the petition to demand immediate action to protect their health and the well-being of their families.

To protect all who are working in the White House, stringent safety measures must be implemented immediately, including a face mask requirement.

Most residence staffers have been working in the White House for years, some even through multiple presidential administrations.⁴ They're working to support their families, and many of them have to work a certain number of years to receive their pension. They can't risk being fired for calling out of work or speaking up about unsafe conditions.

During this time of unprecedented danger from COVID-19, the people of the United States must demand rules for the White House that are in the best interests of the people who work there.

The White House is the people's house: The American people own it, pay for it, and allow the president and his family to live in it.⁵The current residents of the people's house do not have the right to endanger the health of others.
