Ads to remove the seditionists in Congress

MoveOn is already mounting an enormous campaign to ensure that Trump is convicted in his Senate impeachment trial next week, but we cannot stop there.

Dear MoveOn member,

Shocking new footage from the siege of the Capitol was released over the weekend, and it is the clearest evidence yet that the white supremacist mob believed that they were acting on direct orders from Donald Trump and with the support of seditionists in Congress.

While ransacking the Senate chamber, one rioter says, "Ted Cruz would want us to do this."1

As a mob confronts Capitol Police inside Congress, one yells, "You're outnumbered. There's a f***ing million of us out there. And we are listening to Trump, your boss!"2

It is clear that the rhetoric and direct calls to action not just from Trump but from senators like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, and members of the House like Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Mo Brooks, Jim Jordan, Kevin McCarthy, and more led to the events at the Capitol on January 6, and each of them must be held accountable.

MoveOn is running an all-hands-on-deck campaign to demand that these seditionist members of Congress be removed and held accountable for their part in the deadly events, including taking over the homepages of the major newspapers in Texas and Missouri demanding the removal of Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley. Will you chip in $5 a month to help us run these ads, flood Congress with phone calls, buy billboard space, and and keep our campaign going for as long as it takes to demand justice?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Make no mistake: It was because of the constant repetition of the lie by Trump, Hawley, Cruz, and 145 other Republicans in Congress that—absent a shred of evidence—the election had somehow been stolen from Trump that led thousands of his most ardent and volatile supporters to join him at the Capitol on January 6, and no political spin or mealy-mouthed disavowing of violence after the fact takes away their culpability.3

One of the planners of the riot has also claimed that three members of Congress—Mo Brooks, Andy Biggs, and Paul Gosar—were directly involved in the planning of the event, and reporting from inside the Capitol suggests that other Republican members of Congress may have led participants in the white supremacist mob on "reconnaissance tours" the day before the riot.4,5

If either of these claims is proven to be true, not only must these members of Congress be immediately expelled from the chamber, but they must also be held criminally responsible for their roles.

MoveOn is already mounting an enormous campaign to ensure that Trump is convicted in his Senate impeachment trial next week, but we cannot stop there. Trump alone did not cause the events of January 6. His supporters in Congress fanned the flames that led to an egregious attack on our democracy, and they cannot get away with it.

Will you chip in $5 a month to power our all-hands-on-deck campaign to hold seditionist members of Congress accountable?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Despite the efforts of those members of Congress and the rioters, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be inaugurated tomorrow, and we will finally begin to turn the page on the violence, hatred, cruelty, and corruption that defined the last four years.

But even as we move forward, we cannot forget what led to the deadly assault on our democracy on January 6.

The 139 Republican members of Congress and eight senators who perpetuated Trump's lies and voted against certifying the election do not believe in our democratic ideals.6 They do not believe in the foundational principle of our elections' being determined by the will of the people. And every second that they continue to hold power in Washington puts our country at risk.

MoveOn was built for this fight, and we are ready to lead it. We will do whatever it takes to demand that these seditionists be removed from Congress immediately—and if they are not, we will need a people-powered charge to remove them at the ballot box.

We need you with us in the effort to protect our democracy, Mar. Will you chip in $5 a month, or whatever you can afford?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

We just launched an urgent campaign to remove Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, and other GOP seditionists

Shocking news reports revealed last week that QAnon-supporting Congresswoman Lauren Boebert live-tweeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's location and movements during the white supremacist attack on Capitol Hill, in what appears to have been an effort to help the racist mob locate the speaker.

Dear MoveOn member,

Shocking news reports revealed last week that QAnon-supporting Congresswoman Lauren Boebert live-tweeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's location and movements during the white supremacist attack on Capitol Hill, in what appears to have been an effort to help the racist mob locate the speaker.1

We've already impeached Trump, and we are working hard to ensure the Senate convicts him. But we can't stop there. The Republicans like Boebert, Ted Cruz, and Josh Hawley, who also helped to motivate this deadly white supremacist mob to invade the Capitol, plant explosive devices, and murder a police officer, must be condemned, held accountable, and removed from office.

Which is why MoveOn has launched an urgent, nationwide campaign to immediately do just that.

From potentially buying newspaper, TV, and digital ads; holding rallies; flooding Congress with calls; putting up billboards; and more, we're ready and willing to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to get this done. Will you chip in $5 a month to hold these traitors accountable?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Led by a coalition of our partners, MoveOn helped release a full-page ad in The New York Times last week, calling on Congress to expel not only Trump but also the eight senators and 139 members of the House who voted to overturn the election results.

And MoveOn is strongly supporting Representative Cori Bush's resolution calling on the House to investigate and potentially expel Republican members who helped incite the deadly white supremacist mob.

There is already a groundswell of bipartisan support for removing these violent extremists from public office. The two largest newspapers in Hawley's home state of Missouri have called on him to resign for his despicable actions, his publisher has dropped his upcoming book deal, and hundreds of his constituents painted "Resign Hawley" in downtown St. Louis on Saturday.2,3 And over the weekend, the Houston Chronicle called on Ted Cruz to resign. In Colorado, Boebert's constituents even organized a rally and press conference calling for her resignation.4,5

Make no mistake: The calls for resignation, expulsion, and removal of these violent members of Congress are growing louder and clearer.

We can win this fight.

We can send a powerful message that white supremacist violence won't be tolerated.

But it won't be easy. People like Lindsey Graham are trying to sweep the deadly white supremacist violence under the rug and are saying "it is time to heal and move on."6 Despicable.

There can be no healing without accountability. And accountability means that the members of Congress who incited violence must be removed from Congress.

Mar, we urgently need your help to run this campaign. Will you chip in $5 a month to run this campaign for as long as it takes to ensure these violent extremists don't get away with inciting a deadly insurrection?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

Trump is impeached. Now what? Join MoveOn and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to discuss

Tune in Monday night to hear from Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and movement leaders on the violent attack on our democracy and how we move forward on accountability.

Dear MoveOn member,

RSVP now to join MoveOn on Monday, January 18, at 8 p.m. ET/7 CT/6 MT/5 PT for a livestream discussion with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and advocates to discuss the work ahead to rebuild our democracy, which includes holding Donald Trump, his GOP enablers, and his violent supporters accountable for their unprecedented assault on our democracy.

On Wednesday, January 6, we witnessed an attack on our nation's Capitol and democratic institutions. Just hours after voters in Georgia made history and elected the first Black senator and the first Jewish senator from their state to the United States Senate, a violent mob of white supremacists, spurred on by President Donald Trump and enabled by hundreds of Republicans in Congress who sought to overturn presidential election results, stormed the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., vandalized members' offices, and destroyed lives and property.

This brazen insurrection was unconscionable, and those who incited it must be held accountable or it will happen again. Trump has been impeached again—now, he must be convicted swiftly. Those who voted to overturn the results of our free and fair election must be expelled from office, and those involved in the violence must be brought to justice.

Together on Monday we'll discuss how we got here, how we can build power so that everyone involved in the insurrection is held accountable, and how we can move forward in strengthening our democracy. We'll cover winning elections in Georgia, the rise of white nationalism, and the ways you can take action to expel the seditious members of Congress.

We'll hear from:

  • Congresswoman Ilhan Omar
  • Michael Edison Hayden of Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch blog
  • Rahna Epting of MoveOn
  • and more to be confirmed soon

Sign up now for Monday's livestream at 8 p.m. ET/7 CT/6 MT/5 PT.

The four years of the Trump administration have been a racist backlash against our country electing President Barack Obama, the first Black president, and the increasing political power of Black, Latinx, and Asian voters. These voters not only came out and gave Joe Biden and Kamala Harris the presidency and vice presidency, but they also turned deep red Southern states blue for the first time in decades. We will not be deterred by Trump or his followers; we will continue our push for a multiracial democracy where everyone can thrive.

Democrats will control all three branches of the federal government and will have the authority to ensure that justice is served, while swiftly moving to govern with their mandate to pass sweeping democracy reforms, provide direct economic relief for Americans, get control of the coronavirus pandemic, confront the climate crisis, and so much more.

Join us on Monday as we speak with movement leaders and special guests to discuss why we must remove Trump from office once and for all, and hold his Republican enablers and white supremacist supporters accountable—and how accountability goes hand in hand with paving the way for the Biden-Harris administration and Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress to govern with the bold solutions we desperately need.

Can you join us this Monday at 8 p.m. ET/7 CT/6 MT/5 PT? Click here now to RSVP!

Thanks for all you do.

Disbar Rudy Giuliani

Add your name to show your support.

Dear MoveOn Member,

I'm Etelle Higonnet, a MoveOn member, and I started a petition to The New York Bar Association, which says:

Petition to Disbar Rudy Giuliani

******

We, the undersigned citizens of the United States and students of the legal profession, call on the New York Bar Association to immediately begin disbarment proceedings against Rudy Giuliani.

In leading the efforts to undermine the peaceful transition of power after a free and fair election, Rudy Giuliani attacked the foundations of our democracy. Nearly 160 million Americans exercised their right to vote in the November 2020 election. Dozens of courts rejected unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud, and the Electoral College formally ratified President-elect Biden's victory on December 14, 2020. Despite these clear expressions of the will of the people—and with full knowledge of the implications of their actions—Rudy Giuliani publicly campaigned against Congress's certification of the Electoral College's votes set for January 6, 2021 - and incited a crowd to "trial by combat" which subsequently stormed the Capitol.

In doing so, Rudy Giuliani directly incited the January 6th insurrection, repeating dangerous and unsubstantiated statements regarding the election and abetting the lawless behavior of President Trump. A violent mob attacked the U.S. Capitol. Five people have died. The nation and the world watched as rioters took over the very halls and chambers that embody our democracy. Yet after the violence and terror of the day's events, Rudy Giuliani still chose to persist in baseless objections to the will of the people.

These actions prove Rudy Giuliani fundamentally unfit for membership in the legal profession. He has flagrantly violated some of the most elementary ethics rules governing the legal profession. In inciting and encouraging a violent insurrection against the U.S. government, he has potentially committed "a criminal act that reflects adversely on the lawyer's honesty, trustworthiness, or fitness as a lawyer in other respects." And by fanning the fury of aggrieved constituents through false claims of voter fraud, he has engaged in "conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation."

Most importantly, lawyers who betray the very democratic institutions they are charged with protecting and improving as "public citizens" are definitionally unfit for the legal profession. Rudy Giuliani has shown that he has no respect for the courts by deliberately ignoring that judges across the country and the ideological spectrum have rejected President Trump's efforts to overturn the election. He has shown that he has no respect for the Constitution by violating its words when he arguably "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against" the United States. Worst of all, he has shown that he has no respect for the American public and our democracy by working tirelessly to disenfranchise tens of millions of voters.

Such egregious breaches of integrity matter. The very existence of our profession is symbiotic with the preservation and furtherance of the American republic. If Rudy Giuliani's actions do not result in any repercussions for his professional status as lawyer, that silence will send an unmistakable message to the rest of the legal community, to aspiring lawyers, and to the American public: that lawyers cannot be trusted with the task of protecting, let alone improving, our sacred democracy, and that lawyers can denigrate democratic institutions with impunity.

The New York Bar must begin disbarment proceedings against Rudy Giuliani and send the message that the legal profession stands firmly in defense of our democratic institutions. They must do so whether or not Rudy Giuliani plans to assume the roles of advocate and counselor ever again, as a private or public lawyer. It is the least our profession can do to protect and defend our most cherished ideals and institutions.

Democratic ideals matter. Truth matters. Rule of law matters. It's as simple as that!

Thanks!

Trump was impeached. But that's not enough.

Last night, news broke that Republican members of Congress led leaders of the white supremacist riot on the U.S. Capitol on a "reconnaissance" tour of the building the day before the attack, apparently to make sure that they would know where to find the targets of their violence, including Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence.

Dear MoveOn member,

Last night, news broke that Republican members of Congress led leaders of the white supremacist riot on the U.S. Capitol on a "reconnaissance" tour of the building the day before the attack, apparently to make sure that they would know where to find the targets of their violence, including Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence.1

Now, one of the leaders of the deadly insurrection has confirmed that three Republican members of Congress actively participated in planning the attack: Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, and Mo Brooks.2

This news comes after QAnon Republican Lauren Boebert was caught live-tweeting Speaker Pelosi's location during the attack to help the mob find her.3

The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution clearly states that anyone who "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" may not serve in Congress.4 These seditionists must resign or be expelled immediately, before they get anyone else killed.

We have launched an urgent, all-hands-on-deck, nationwide campaign demanding that insurrectionist members of Congress be expelled or resign, including flooding the phone lines on Capitol Hill with calls, running pressure campaigns in the states and districts represented by these members of Congress, and more.

We need your help to fuel this work for as long as it takes. Will you chip in $5 a month, or whatever you can afford, to help hold these traitors accountable and defend our democracy?

Yes, I'll chip in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

This is not just about political accountability. It's about preventing any further bloodshed.

Last week's attack was an inside job, aided by Republican members of Congress and Donald Trump, and they must be removed from office before they get anyone else killed. The white supremacist militants are now openly planning new attacks during the inauguration and in all 50 state capitals, including issuing threats to assassinate Democratic members of Congress.5

That's why these Republicans, just like Trump, represent an ongoing threat to the lives and safety of thousands of people who work in and around the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and folks in state capitals across the country, and MUST be removed from office now.

Moments ago, a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for his role in inciting the attack, and that was an important first step. But Trump is not the only one with blood on his hands. Senators and representatives who aided and participated in the attack must be held accountable, too.

Representative Cori Bush has introduced a resolution calling on the House to investigate and potentially expel Republican House members who helped incite the deadly white supremacist mob. This should be a no-brainer. Further, the eight senators and 139 representatives who voted to overturn the election results, including Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, should be expelled or resign.6

Momentum is on our side, and we can't let up.

Will you chip in $5 a month to help us run ads and direct a flood of phone calls to Congress—and keep them going for as long as it takes—demanding that the Republicans who helped organize, plan, or incite last week's insurrection be expelled?

Yes, I'll chip in.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

Joe Biden: Fire FBI Director Chris Wray on Day One

Add your name to show your support.

Dear MoveOn Member,

I'm Eleanor Eagan of Revolving Door Project and I started a petition to President-Elect Joe Biden, which says:

According to its own website, the FBI's first priority is to protect the country from terrorism. Because the events of January 6, 2021 make clear that the Bureau under Director Chris Wray's leadership has failed at that mission, Biden must fire Wray without delay.

On January 6, people watched in horror as violent white supremacist extremists stormed the Capitol building and temporarily forced the electoral college certification process to a halt.

As awful as the day's events were, it is clear that they were almost much worse. Many of the insurrectionists came with weapons, handcuffs, and zip ties - ready to take hostages or worse. Members of Congress and their staff were secured from the rioters with virtually no time to spare.

This violent attempt to overturn November's election result was rightfully shocking to the general public, but participants had made no secret of their plans. The FBI either failed to monitor what white supremacists and right wing extremists were openly plotting or were aware and chose not to act -- either is an unacceptable betrayal of its mission and failure of leadership.

Biden must hold those responsible accountable. He must fire FBI Director Chris Wray on day one of his administration.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Make no mistake: The calls for resignation, expulsion, and removal of these violent members of Congress are growing louder and clearer.

We can win this fight.

We can send a powerful message that white supremacist violence won't be tolerated.

But it won't be easy. People like Lindsey Graham are trying to sweep the deadly white supremacist violence under the rug and are saying "it is time to heal and move on."5 Despicable.
