Fair Elections Now

We have a real chance to move the ball forward on public financing of congressional elections this week. Can you call Rep. McCarthy and urge her to become a co-sponsor of the Fair Elections Now Act?

Dear MoveOn member,

Can you imagine how much easier the health care fight would be if health insurance companies weren't spending hundreds of millions to block reform?

In fact, what if we entirely eliminated the outsized influence that corporate money has in politics?

This week, we've got a real chance to help change the rules in Washington. The Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826) would enact public financing for all congressional races so that our elected officials would actually be accountable to the people—not big-money donors.

The bill already has 97 bipartisan co-sponsors. By adding more, we can show momentum and make it much more likely the bill will move to the House floor for debate. Can you call Rep. McCarthy right now to ask her to co-sponsor the Fair Elections Now Act? Here's where to call:

The Fair Elections Now Act would allow candidates to run campaigns for Congress based on the strength of their community support and ideas, not on the size of their bank accounts. Under the proposed system, candidates would seek small contributions from people in their home states rather than big money from lobbyists and PACs in Washington. Once they'd raised the minimum amount of money from their community, they would qualify for public funding to run their race.

This common-sense idea was proposed by Democrat John Larson and Republican Walter Jones in the House. And it's already won the support of a wide range of political organizations who want to see Congress doing the work of the people.

This year, we've run up against a wall of corporate money that's intent on preserving the status quo on health care, clean energy, and financial reform. Every campaign down the road will be made easier if we can make this fundamental reform.

Can you call Rep. McCarthy now and tell her that the Fair Elections Now Act needs her support at this critical moment?
