Can you call Representative Gregory Meeks? Tell him: "Please don't let Speaker Boehner continue to stand in the way of Comprehensive immigration reform. Introduce the bipartisan Senate bill in the House and support a discharge petition." Representative Gregory Meeks |
My name is Stephanie Hamm, and I've lived in Texas for 38 years. As someone from a border state, I'm 110% committed to the fight for comprehensive immigration reform, which includes protections for family unity, and a clear roadmap to citizenship.
And we could have reform right now. But so far Speaker Boehner, who has the power to bring the bipartisan Senate bill up for an an up-or-down vote, has refused to do so.
We can't wait for Speaker Boehner any longer.
This August recess marks a critical moment for immigration reform. The pressure on the House to take action coming out of the recess is mounting. And if comprehensive immigration reform doesn't pass in the fall, the opportunity could be lost. I've joined other MoveOn immigration leaders to do everything I can to make sure that Congress hears us loud and clear.
That's why this week, MoveOn members and allies across the country are calling Democratic members of Congress and asking them to bypass Speaker Boehner to save immigration reform. We want them to introduce the Senate bill, which passed with broad bipartisan support, then use a discharge petition to force an up-or-down vote in the House.
Filing a discharge petition is the best option we have to pass comprehensive immigration reform this fall. It only takes 218 votes to file one—that's every Democrat in Congress and 17 Republicans. Support for the discharge petition is growing in the media and among members of Congress.

It's essential that members of Congress hear our voices loud and clear. Last Saturday, I joined other MoveOn members and immigration allies to participate in a town hall event for Representative Blake Farenthold here in Texas. Rep. Farenthold is a Republican who may support comprehensive immigration reform. Our presence at the town hall made an impact especially when one of our members shared a story about how she had waited 20 years to gain citizenship because of how broken the system is.
During the rest of August, we need to make sure that we are calling members of Congress' offices, visiting them, and attending town halls so that they take our message back with them to Congress in September.
Thanks for all you do.
