It's a new year, but Congress is returning to many of the same problems they didn't tackle before heading home for the holidays—including the civil rights crisis facing Dreamers across America.
Dear New York MoveOn member,
It's a new year, but members of Congress are returning to many of the same problems they didn't tackle before heading home for the holidays—including the civil rights crisis facing Dreamers across America.
More than 14,000 Dreamers have already lost their legal protections since Donald Trump declared an end to DACA—with hundreds of thousands more facing uncertainty and the threat of deportation from the only country they've ever called home. Yet Congress keeps delaying any action on an obvious solution: the popular, bipartisan Dream Act.
Today, Senate and House leaders from both major parties—including Senator Chuck Schumer—are meeting at the White House to discuss a comprehensive spending deal in advance of the current January 19 deadline. Senate Democrats gave Republicans the vote they needed for a GOP spending bill in December—and they must not do that again, until Congress votes on the Dream Act. And Sen. Schumer, as Democratic leader in the Senate, has a responsibility to hold the caucus together and deliver on his promise of the Dream Act.
Here's where to call:
- Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
It might be a new year, but we have reason to expect that it's the same old Congress—that didn't pass the Dream Act, failed to fully authorize CHIP which provides health care for nine million children, and has still refused to provide meaningful relief to Puerto Rico.
We are making sure Republicans feel pressure to do better in 2018. But Democrats also need to know that we expect them to hold firm—they have the leverage to demand a spending bill that addresses these real crises, and we'll have their back if they don't back down ... or hold them accountable if they fold again.
Here's where to call:
- Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
We have just over two weeks until the next budget deadline—and this is our moment to make sure Democrats and Republicans hear that we expect them to do their jobs and stop putting more and more Dreamers at risk.
Thanks for all you do.
