Sign this petition re: eminent domain

Eminent domain should not be used for political stunts. The Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security must refuse to take property from citizens for political purposes.

Dear MoveOn member,

Eminent domain (the seizure of private lands for public use) should never be used for political stunts, especially to pursue a racist and anti-immigrant agenda. In order to build the wall, the Trump administration will have to seize private lands along the U.S.-Mexico border. This is a complete misuse of eminent domain to build a wasteful and racist wall. Join me in rejecting this border wall land grab.1

Sign this petition rejecting this misuse of eminent domain. The Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security must refuse to take property from citizens for political purposes.

The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution states, "No person shall be deprived of property, without due process of law." This provision, known as the Takings Clause, protects citizens from unreasonable government seizure of private property.

However, now President Trump is looking to take private land from property owners who live near the U.S.-Mexico border for his political border wall stunt. We reject Trump's border wall land grab. It's clearly an unreasonable government seizure of private property.

In addition to that, the border wall has been assessed as unnecessary. According to a recently released Quinnipiac University poll, a majority of Americans don't believe that Trump's wall is needed to secure the border, it wouldn't make the U.S. safer, and it would not be a good use of taxpayer money.2
