What this win means

Now, its up to Sen. Schumer and Senate Democrats to deliver the transformative solutions we need to rebuild and work towards an America that works for all of us.

Dear MoveOn member,

Wow! Thank a Georgia organizer today! Mitch McConnell's reign of terror as Senate majority leader is most likely finally over. Moreover, the victory of Senator-elect Raphael Warnock and the predicted victory of Jon Ossoff have proven a key point: When we mobilize for candidates and policies that materially improve people's lives, we can win—even in a battleground state like Georgia.

Now, it's up to the likely new majority leader, Senator Schumer, and the almost-assured new Democratic majority to deliver the transformative solutions that build an America that works for all of us. We worked so hard for this electoral victory, and now we must finish the job we started.

Will you call Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand now to declare that the voters have spoken again and we need them to deliver big, bold solutions to address the multiple crises we face, from the coronavirus pandemic to the economic crisis to climate change to racial justice?

Here's where to call:

  • Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
  • Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

Now is no time to be timid. We need bold, immediate action. President-elect Biden said it best on the campaign trail: "If I have the honor of being elected president, we're not just going to tinker around the edges. We're going to make historic investments that will seize the opportunity and meet this moment in history. We're going to get to work delivering results right away on day one."

And the results in Georgia proved that voters are hungry for transformative solutions: Warnock and Ossoff campaigned on $2,000 stimulus checks for working people, a public option for health care, and boldly tackling the climate crisis—and it's likely both won their respective elections.

Now, delivering the big and bold changes needed to meet our current challenges is possible with the projected victories in both Georgia Senate run-off elections, delivering a Democratic majority, but it will take all of us to achieve these changes. We can't lose a single vote, with the Senate split 50/50 and Vice President-elect Harris holding the tie-breaking vote. In order for any legislation to pass to deliver the relief people desperately need, every single Democrat needs to be aligned. And to be clear, this Democratic majority would be even larger without the regressive structure of the Senate—so Senate Democrats need to know they are acting on behalf of a national mandate, just as President-elect Biden is with his historic vote totals and 7-million-vote margin.

There is not a moment to spare. Please call your Democratic senators, Schumer and Gillibrand, now to ensure they know we're all counting on them to use the power of the majority to pass big, bold solutions that provide direct relief and transform our institutions to support all communities, not just the wealthy few.

MoveOn members have spent the last four years fighting back against relentless attacks and building broad public support for policies that will go beyond reversing Trump's destruction by expanding access to fundamental rights and benefits—including things like health care for all and creating a pathway to citizenship—to all people. Our wins together, from saving the Affordable Care Act to winning the House in 2018, have all built on each other. Now, we have a narrow window to pass legislation before the next election begins in earnest, and Democrats must be prepared to deliver starting on day one. And we must let them know millions of us will have their back when they act, but we'll hold them accountable if they are too timid or cautious.

Call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand today so they are ready on January 20 to start providing real relief and passing long-term solutions to create an America that works for everyone.

Thanks for all you do.
