As the tragedy in Haiti unfolds, Americans are generously donating millions of dollars to aid organizations.

But when Americans donate to charity with their credit cards, the credit card companies get rich. In some cases they keep 3% of the donation as a "transaction fee," even though that's far more than it costs them to process the donation.

It's outrageous and wrong—and it needs to stop.

The petition says: "Credit card companies shouldn't be getting rich off of Americans' generosity. They should waive all fees on charitable contributions from today on."

The credit card companies are trying to get ahead of this story, announcing they will temporarily waive the fees they charge on some Haiti-related charitable contributions for the next 6 weeks. But that's nowhere near enough. Many emergency donations to Haiti will still get hit with hefty bank fees. (To give a sense of how limited the exemption is, Doctors Without Borders isn't on any of the publicly available lists of charities that won't be charged fees.)²

 

All American credit card companies should announce that they will waive ALL fees on charitable contributions, starting today, and going forward for good. This isn't about helping political organizations like MoveOn, just helping true charitable organizations.  

It's the right thing to do, and honestly, it's the least they could do after the role they played in crashing the entire global economy last year.

Today could be our last chance to push for key fixes in the final health care bill. News is that a final deal on the bill could come as soon as tonight.¹ 

But several major issues are still up in the air. First, whether insurance will be truly affordable for all Americans—both bills require folks to have insurance, but as of now the subsidies aren't sufficient to make it affordable for all. And second, whether the new health insurance exchange will be run by the states, or nationally—the far stronger structure in terms of efficiency, competition, and keeping insurance companies honest.² 

Many House progressives are pushing hard for these key fixes and others, like the public option, in the final bill.³ But with Senate conservatives opposed to just about any improvements, it's going to take a real show of support from voters to win these fixes.

Affordability and the form of the health insurance exchange are shaping up to be two core points of contention in the final health care bill. Here's why it's so crucial to fight to fix them:

• Affordability: As it stands, reform could leave insurance unaffordable for some low-income and working Americans. Both bills require people to have insurance, but even with subsidies, some could have to pay up to 20% of their income on health care. That's simply unaffordable. The final bill must ensure that insurance is truly affordable for all.⁴


• The health insurance exchange: In the House bill, the "exchange," a new marketplace where Americans who don't have insurance through work could choose from a variety of plans, is run nationally; in the Senate, it's state-by-state. According to experts, a national exchange is the far better structure—with a larger customer pool, it would be more efficient, help lower costs, and offer more consumer choice.⁵

Fixing these issues would go a long, long way toward making the final health care bill more progressive and better for all Americans. 

Of course, there are a number of other important issues yet to be decided in the final bill, from the public option to women's health. And it's crucial for all of us to keep fighting for all of these. 

Right now, though, the talk in Washington is on a small set of core issues, including affordability and the exchange. And we may have only hours to make sure Washington hears from folks like us before making crucial decisions.

Haiti

Dear MoveOn member,

The news coming out of Haiti is almost too terrible to imagine.

Three million people have been affected by Tuesday's earthquake, and the Red Cross estimates as many as 50,000 may be dead. Survivors are digging through the rubble with their hands in a desperate attempt to rescue those who are trapped.

With water and medical supplies in short supply, and the Haitian government paralyzed, international aid efforts in the next few days will be critical to prevent more human suffering.

Like Rep. Grijalva says in his video message, the hard work of regular folks like all of us is a major reason why we've gotten as far as we have in the health care fight. It's a big part of why the House of Representatives passed a strong bill in November, one that would cover 36 million Americans, offer the choice of a national public option, and enact regulations with the teeth to keep insurance companies honest.

But unfortunately, the Senate bill—with no public option, weaker insurance regulations, and coverage for 5 million fewer people—is seriously flawed. And both bills include dangerous provisions to curb women's right to choose.

Cutting Obama off at the knees

It's hard to imagine, but a new sneak attack in the Senate could block much of the progress President Obama's made on global warming and force him to adopt President Bush's climate policy.¹

President Obama has been cracking down on global warming under Clean Air Act provisions that Bush and Cheney ignored.

But an oil-state Republican senator has arranged a vote next week to block the Clean Air Act—and we could lose. Few in Congress even know this attack is happening. Senate Democrats aren't yet mobilized against it, and many are even considering going along with this Clean Air Act rollback.

That would be a crippling blow to progress on climate and clean energy. We can't let that happen. That's why we're aiming to get 150,000 signatures on this petition supporting the Clean Air Act by midnight tonight. The Clean Air Act requires strict limits on global warming emissions from all major sources.² But for years the law has been ignored, letting polluters off the hook and keeping America hooked on oil and coal.

President Obama's Environmental Protection Agency is finally enforcing the Clean Air Act. As a result, we're on our way to seeing cars and trucks that get better gas mileage. The oldest and dirtiest coal plants will finally either clean up or shut down. And these rules will give a major boost to the clean energy jobs we need to rebuild our economy.³

But Big Oil and Coal lobbyists are demanding the Congress pull the plug on Obama. Senator Lisa Murkowski, an Alaska Republican and the #3 top recipient of campaign donations from oil companies and electric utilities, is leading the charge by pushing an amendment to block any efforts to enforce the Clean Air Act.⁴

The vote on Murkwoski's Clean Air Act rollback amendment is scheduled for next week. Right now it's too close to call, but we can stop it if enough of us speak out.

In 11 days, we could lose progressive hero Ted Kennedy's Senate seat—and with it, any hope for passing major progressive legislation this year.

A new poll Tuesday showed Democrat Martha Coakley's lead in the special election to succeed Kennedy is at the edge of the margin of error, and the non-partisan Cook Political Report now says it's very competitive.¹ And today, some of the people behind the infamous Swift Boat and racist Willie Horton ads are spending $400,000 on a new attack ad. Republican Scott Brown and his extreme right-wing supporters are significantly outspending Coakley on TV.²

A Republican victory here would be a catastrophe—Democrats would lose their 60th vote in the Senate, health care could die, and the Republicans could block pretty much anything they want.

Martha Coakley will carry on Ted Kennedy's progressive legacy. In endorsing Coakley, Vicki Kennedy, Ted Kennedy's wife, said, "My husband fought for healthcare reform for more than 40 years. Martha Coakley shares those critical beliefs." Coakley has also been outspoken against restrictions in the bill on women's right to choose.³

As Massachusetts Attorney General, Coakley was aggressive in challenging the Wall Street titans who helped bring on the financial crisis, and she recovered tens of millions of dollars for taxpayers and victims of Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and UBS for their deceptive activities.⁴ She'll be a strong fighter in Washington for tough regulations on the financial industry.

And Republican Scott Brown? He's a "free enterprise advocate"⁵ who thinks the system works just fine. But he's giving Coakley a serious challenge. He promised, "As the 41st senator I can stop a lot of this stuff in its tracks....I can actually force them to go back to the drawing board."⁶ And there are rumors that the Republican Party and the Club for Growth will also begin attack ads on Coakley soon.

And the race is further confused by the presence of a 3rd candidate, named Joe Kennedy, who isn't related to Ted Kennedy, but is a tea-party extremist. Martha Coakley needs our help to cut through the clutter and get her message out—on TV, at the doors, and on the phones.

In most ways, the House bill is far stronger than the Senate bill. It would cover 36 million Americans, create a national public option, make health care more affordable for the lowest income families, and keep Big Insurance honest with stronger regulations. But the pressure from conservatives is intense, so it's crucial that Congress hears from voters like you about the key flaws that must be fixed in the final package.

Here are a few things that you could tell Rep. McCarthy you want fixed in the final bill:

• Give Americans the choice of a public option. Congress should model the final bill after the House version, which contains a national public option—the key to real competition, greater choice, and lower costs.³


• Make insurance affordable. Both bills require most Americans to have insurance. But even with subsidies, some people could pay up to 20% of their income on health care. The final bill must ensure families aren't required to spend more than they can afford.⁴


• Protect women's health care. Both bills impose dangerous new restrictions on women's reproductive health care. While the House version is worse, neither provision can be in the final bill.⁵


• Finance health care fairly. The Senate would pay for part of reform by taxing the benefits packages of some working Americans. The House, on the other hand, pays for reform with a small surcharge on the wealthiest Americans—a far better approach.⁶


• Hold insurance companies to the same anti-trust laws as other companies. Right now, insurance companies are exempt from laws designed to prevent monopolies and price-gouging. The House bill would fix this, and so should the final bill.⁷
