Join me in calling for our government to show leadership and kindness by accepting more refugees from Syria.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Seeing images of dead children washing ashore is devastating and has convinced me that we need to do something to help Syrian refugees.

There is a refugee crisis happening right now, and the U.S. needs to show leadership and kindness by accepting these refugees from Syria and elsewhere.

I think we're all disturbed by the danger people are undertaking on their journeys to Europe, and the number of deaths we have witnessed is heartbreaking.

Germany is accepting 800,000 refugees, while we are only accepting in the few thousands.¹ We have the wealth to do it, so let's do it!

Thursday in Great Neck: Vigil for peace and diplomacy

Dear MoveOn member,

This is the week Congress votes for war or peace.

Thanks to the incredible work of thousands of MoveOn members and allies, 38 senators have now pledged to support peace and diplomacy.¹

But the war hawks aren't giving up, so neither can we. In just a few days, as Congress begins voting on the Iran nuclear accord, Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are planning a massive pro-war rally in Washington, DC in a last-ditch effort to sway enough Democrats to abandon diplomacy.²

That's why MoveOn members and our allies are countering Trump and Cruz and declaring our support for peace and diplomacy by holding hundreds of candlelight vigils for peace all across the country this Thursday evening, including one in Great Neck.

Can you attend the vigil in Great Neck, join the call for peace, and show your support for diplomacy with Iran?

How about ending tax breaks for CEO bonuses instead?

Corporations like Walmart avoid paying millions in taxes each year by giving out huge CEO bonuses. Meanwhile, the Senate is about to take up a budget with huge cuts to programs that support the middle class. Tell the Senate to end these outrageous tax breaks for CEO bonuses instead of cutting funding core programs.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Nathan Proctor of the organization Fair Share. The Senate is about to take up a budget that makes deep cuts to programs that help build the middle class—like education funding and job training.¹

Meanwhile, huge corporations like Walmart continue to get tax breaks for handing out huge CEO bonuses.

With a shrinking middle class and rising inequality, no corporation should get a tax break for shelling out giant bonuses to CEOs. We urge you to take action to close the performance pay loophole. Instead of making deep cuts to the programs that build a stronger middle class, why doesn't Congress close this loophole that gives extra incentives for excessive CEO pay?

The tax code sets a $1-million limit per executive for the amount of pay that corporations can write off their income taxes.² But the problem is that there's a loophole that exempts "performance-based" pay.

So corporations are shelling out huge CEO bonuses to pay less in taxes. For example, during the past six years, Walmart pocketed $298.6 million in fully deductible "performance pay," lowering the company's federal tax bills by $104 million.³

We simply can't afford tax loopholes that help the biggest corporations dodge paying their fair share. It's time we close these loopholes and invest in an economy that works for all of us, not just the CEOs.

Why I support the Iran nuclear deal

War should always be our last resort.

Diplomacy. Vigorous, muscular diplomacy, like that embodied in the Iran nuclear negotiations, must be what we try first. Always.

There's a terrible cost to waging war—both human and economic. That cost—and why I support the Iran deal—is the subject of my latest video.

America will soon have a generation raised entirely during wartime with no end in sight.

It's just common sense: If diplomacy with Iran is an option—and it is—we must use it.

The Syrian boy

By now, you've probably seen the photo of the body of a drowned 3-year-old Syrian refugee, found on a beach in Turkey, still wearing his tiny Velcro sneakers, blue shorts, and red T-shirt.1 (I won't paste it here. You can easily find it online.)

By now, you've probably seen the photo of the body of a drowned 3-year-old Syrian refugee named Aylan Kurdi, found on a beach in Turkey—still wearing his tiny Velcro sneakers, blue shorts, and a red T-shirt.¹ (I won't paste it here. You can easily find it online.)

 

The refugee crisis stemming in part from the turmoil in Syria isn't new. But for just a moment, this one image has united people around the world in grief, horror, and the resolve to act.

Can you chip in now to provide direct support to Syrian families who have fled their homes?

Just $141 is enough to support a family of five refugees for a month. Your tax-deductible gift—which will be administered through the Lifeline cash assistance program of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)—will help families to pay for rent, food, health care, and children's needs. The program also provides refugees with choice, control, and dignity, as they choose how best to care for their families.

A donation isn't going to end the refugee crisis in Europe—and there's more that needs to be done to ease the suffering of Syrians and other refugees and migrants streaming into Europe. But it will provide food, shelter, and medical supplies to a family in desperate need. It will improve the lives of people who have lost everything. And it will help keep our hearts open to the suffering of families caught in wars and trauma around the world—so we can keep seeking peaceful ways to stand with them in their time of need.
