Because of McDonald's slow, inadequate, and irresponsible response to the coronavirus pandemic, hundreds of thousands of McDonald's frontline workers are currently facing an impossible decision: keeping their jobs or protecting their health.

Dozens of McDonald's workers in 14 states have contracted the coronavirus, and in a recent survey.¹ In a complaint to OSHA, a McDonald's worker in Chicago described workplace conditions as "an imminent danger to our health."²

McDonald's needs to take action now to protect the health and safety of its workers, customers, and the communities where it operates.

McDonald's: Protect your workers and guarantee that every McDonald's worker has access to paid sick and family leave.

We must make it clear that if McDonald's wishes to be seen as a leader in the fast-food industry after this crisis, then it needs to put worker safety and public health first. No one should have to choose between their health or their livelihood. It's well past time that McDonald's use its vast resources to protect the workers who contribute so much to the corporation's brand, reputation, and profits.

The Postal Service is about to run out of money due to the coronavirus and Republicans

The Postal Service is in crisis, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and draconian Republican mandates. It will run out of money between July and September, at which point its "operations will cease," if Congress doesn't act.

The Republican crusade to kill the U.S. Postal Service went into overdrive this week, when Donald Trump installed a top Republican donor as the new postmaster general.¹

The Postal Service is in crisis, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and draconian Republican mandates. It will run out of money between July and September, at which point its "operations will cease," if Congress doesn't act.²

Congress quickly bailed out the airline industry to the tune of $50 billion. That bailout included $4 billion for FedEx and UPS.³ But Trump and Republicans in Congress continue to stonewall emergency funding for the 245-year-old Postal Service. Why? It's all part of their quest to privatize it.

And now, at this most critical moment in its fight for survival, the Postal Service will be led by a Trump crony. Trump has gone so far as to call the Postal Service "a joke."⁴

Mar, we need to fight back—and quickly. There's reason for optimism: The Postal Service is by far the most popular government agency, with a 90% approval rating.⁵ It's one of the largest employers in the U.S., with a workforce of 630,000 people, 40% of whom are people of color.⁶ And in an election year, Republicans can't be seen killing the Postal Service, a lifeline for so many Americans, especially in the middle of the current pandemic.

That's why MoveOn's work to shine a spotlight on Republican efforts to kill the Postal Service is so critical. But we urgently need to increase the pressure on key Republicans by expanding our digital ad campaign and launching a TV ad campaign in rural parts of key states, where what the Postal Service does is particularly essential.

The Postal Service serves every American in every community, no matter how remote their location, six or even seven days a week, and all for the same price. That includes delivering lifesaving medications—more than 1 billion prescriptions last year—groceries, mail, census forms, vote-by-mail ballots, and so much more.⁷

And since we don't expect a vaccine for the coronavirus to be widely available in time for this November's elections, the Postal Service will be essential to enabling millions of Americans to vote by mail. In the last two federal elections, about one in four voters cast their ballot by mail.⁸ This November, the vast majority of voters will need to vote by mail.

But despite the Postal Service's centuries-long service to the American people, for the last 40 years, Republicans have sought to "starve, strangle, and sabotage" it.⁹ And now, the coronavirus pandemic is giving a frightening boost to their efforts.

Most Americans don't know it, but the Postal Service doesn't receive a single taxpayer dollar.¹⁰ It is entirely funded by revenue from the sales of stamps and postage.

But Congress sets the rules for the Postal Service, and in 2006, Republicans in a lame-duck session of Congress passed a law forcing the Postal Service to pre-fund its employee pension and retirement costs, including health care, for the next 75 years.¹¹ That means it must fund retirement accounts for employees who haven't yet been hired—or even born.

The year that mandate passed, the Postal Service made $900 million in profits; it has not had a single profitable year since.¹²

Now, the coronavirus pandemic has caused the volume of mail to plummet, since the vast majority of mail is sent by businesses, and the Postal Service is about to run out of money.¹³

The Postal Service will not survive the summer without immediate action by Congress. Mar, we need your help to turn the heat WAY up on key Republicans who are blocking emergency funding for the Postal Service.

Black man shot and killed while jogging (sign the petition)

Dear MoveOn member,

Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man, was jogging near his neighborhood in Brunswick, Glynn County, GA, on February 23, when he was chased down, shot, and killed in cold blood. Ahmaud and his family deserve justice.

His executioners were two white men, Gregory and Travis McMichael, who told police that they believed Ahmaud fit the profile of a burglary suspect. But the truth is Ahmaud's murder was an act of hatred and white supremacy.

District Attorney George Barnhill defended Ahmaud's murderers—one of whom is a retired Glynn County police officer and a former investigator with the local district attorney's office—by making the outrageous claim that they acted in self-defense and their actions fell within Georgia's citizen arrest laws.

Sign the petition to demand justice for Ahmaud and a real investigation.

Ahmaud Arbery, a young Black man, was barbarically shot and killed by Gregory and Travis McMichael. It is because of District Attorney George Barnhill's affiliation with the McMichaels and his recommendations to the Glynn County police that there has been no accountability for Ahmaud's murder. We are calling on District Attorney Barnhill to resign immediately.

According to a police report, the McMichaels grabbed a .357 magnum and a shotgun and got into a pickup truck to chase Ahmaud, who was running at a jogger's pace and unarmed.¹ Ahmaud tried to avoid them, but they chased him down and murdered him. Yet in his letter to the Glynn County police arguing against arresting the McMichaels, Barnhill stated, "It appears their intent was to stop and hold this criminal suspect until law enforcement arrived. Under Georgia law this is perfectly legal."² Because of this, two months have gone by without an arrest or any form of accountability. 

Instead of seeking justice, Barnhill abused his authority to exonerate the McMichaels in the media and cover up cold-blooded murder.

Ahmaud's death is akin to a modern-day lynching. We must act NOW to end this racist terror. Enough is enough. We refuse to lose any more of our loved ones to these reckless acts of violence.

We are demanding justice for Ahmaud. Sign the petition demanding District Attorney George Barnhill's immediate resignation.

Essential workers should be getting $600 hazard pay

When asked on March 30 about proposals to give hazard pay to the millions of workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic, Donald Trump said, "If anybody's entitled to it, they are."¹

But one month and four relief package bills from Congress later, no hazard pay has been given—or even "seriously considered" by Congress.² This is unacceptable. Essential workers—from bus drivers to farm workers and warehouse workers to health care professionals—deserve proper compensation and financial protection.

Congress must take initiative to compensate the ones still working and at-risk with the same extra $600 that unemployed people are receiving.

Essential workers should be paid from the time this epidemic began, because those who are still working are risking their own health, as well as the health of their families.

We the essential workers—the grocery store and meatpacking plant employees helping to feed your families, the health care workers nursing COVID-19 patients back to health, and many others—are risking our health and the health of our loved ones if we bring the virus home. Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Ro Khanna have proposed a full Essential Workers Bill of Rights, including a living wage and hazard pay, because Congress should be providing essential workers with the protections they need, the rights they are entitled to, and the compensation they deserve.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that "this crisis is not over yet, and as long as these workers continue to work and expose themselves to the virus, they should be properly compensated."³ If you agree, please sign my petition.

Mitch McConnell: Protect corporate CEOs ... or else.

Meatpacking plants have become the newest epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, with nearly 5,000 employees across the country contracting the virus and at least 20 employees dead.

Meatpacking plants have become the newest epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, with nearly 5,000 employees across the country contracting the virus and at least 20 employees dead.¹ And while employees—who are largely immigrants or people of color—are calling out cramped working conditions and lax sanitation policies for accelerating the spread, the Trump administration is pushing these plants to remain open, and Mitch McConnell and Republicans in Congress are demanding that employers be protected from accountability—or else.^2,3

McConnell has said that liability protections, which would prevent employees or customers from suing if they contract COVID-19 at a business that has reopened but has not put in place proper protections, are a "red line" and that he will refuse to bring any additional coronavirus relief bills to a vote without them.⁴

You read that right. McConnell wants to hold up desperately needed aid to cities and states, assistance for essential workers, and money to protect the 2020 election via expanded early voting and vote-by-mail, unless the public is banned from holding corporations responsible if they cause further coronavirus infections.

And you can be sure this isn't just about meatpacking plants—McConnell has a long history of putting corporate interests ahead of the needs of regular people.

We can't let that happen, Mar. Will you rush a $3 donation now to help us stop this dirty dealing and keep the pressure up on Democrats in Congress to demand real relief for people and not massive corporations?

Corporations have been pushing for the economy to be reopened—including by fueling the armed, right-wing riots that have popped up across the country in recent weeks—even though public health officials have warned that the country does not have the infrastructure in place to do so safely.

But the only thing that matters to them is their bottom line, and Donald Trump is cheering them on. He even signed an executive order designating meatpacking plants as "critical infrastructure," compelling workers to return to dangerous working conditions while outbreaks continue to occur.⁵

MoveOn is working around the clock to demand that Congress pass a bill to provide real relief to workers and protections for our democracy, including: 

• An Essential Workers Bill of Rights, which would provide additional support and protections for workers on the front lines, including hazard pay for their work during the pandemic.
• Robust funding to cities and states, which are bearing the brunt of pandemic response and receiving little support from the Trump administration.
• Direct relief to individuals and families who are struggling to pay basic needs like rent and utility bills and buy groceries.
• Plus additional funding to protect our democracy during the pandemic and beyond.

Trump's reasoning is nothing short of vindictive: He hates the postal service because they deliver packages for Amazon, whose owner, Jeff Bezos, also owns The Washington Post, a newspaper that isn't afraid to report the facts and challenge the Trump administration when necessary. And it's long been part of the right-wing Republican agenda to privatize the USPS.

And so, Trump and his Republican loyalists want to bankrupt the postal service, cause nearly 600,000 workers—nearly 40% of whom are workers of color—to lose their jobs, rip reliable mail delivery from vast swaths of the country, and, as if all that wasn't bad enough, ensure that there is no large scale vote-by-mail campaign this November.

Sign the petition to tell your senators to reject Justin Walker's nomination.

Dear MoveOn member,

Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell's attempts to pack the courts with lifetime appointees who are unqualified to serve the American people may restart as early as next week. We cannot allow the American judicial system to descend even further because of their partisan politicking.

McConnell is calling the Senate back into session during a global pandemic, but instead of focusing on helping the people who are struggling during this public health crisis, he is working to install his political crony, Justin Walker, into a powerful lifetime role on the federal bench.¹ As he is only 37 years old now, Walker could sit on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals for decades to come.

Tell your senators to reject Justin Walker's nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Justin Walker's nomination is a triumph of nepotism over neutrality. Mitch McConnell, Walker's political patron, is rewarding Walker by advancing him to a D.C. Circuit judgeship that will not even become vacant until September. Tell your senators to reject Walker's nomination.

 

Walker is an extreme right-wing ideologue whose zealous opposition to health care access and relentless, hyperpartisan advocacy for Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court would stand out at any moment in time. Donald Trump and McConnell's shameful move to advance this nomination right now is especially irresponsible amid the worst public health emergency this nation has faced in more than a century.

As a partisan operative, Walker helped lead the lobbying campaign for Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. He lauded Kavanaugh for providing a ''roadmap'' to overturn the Affordable Care Act.² And he made well over 100 media appearances to praise and defend Kavanaugh between June and October 2018.³

The influential D.C. Circuit decides important cases that impact our lives. From civil rights protections to issues of national security, some of the most significant issues of our time hinge on the decisions of the D.C. Circuit.

Only a few short months ago, Walker was nominated and confirmed to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, despite his far-right record and the American Bar Association's determination that he was unqualified for the position because of his embarrassing lack of trial and litigation experience.⁴ Now, just months later, McConnell is fast-tracking Walker to the powerful D.C. Circuit because of their close relationship.

Of Trump's 56 appellate nominations, just 11 are women, only one is Latinx, and none are African American. His district court nominees are similarly nondiverse. Walker's nomination only worsens Trump's record on judicial diversity.
