This could be the death knell for Trump's campaign

One of the most reliable Republican voting blocs in the country is seniors—but newly released polling shows that Donald Trump's botched coronavirus response may cause that support to crumble under his feet.

Dear MoveOn member,

One of the most reliable Republican voting blocs in the country is seniors—but newly released polling shows that Donald Trump's botched coronavirus response may cause that support to crumble under his feet.

These stunning new polls show that just between March and April, Trump's approval rating among seniors dropped a whopping 14 points, and notably, the percentage of seniors who say they are "very favorable" to Trump has dropped to just 20%, the lowest of his presidency.1

This shift could not be more important. In 2016, voters over age 50 represented more than half of the electorate, and the majority of these voters voted for Trump.2 If he loses a significant portion of that support, it will be the death knell for his campaign.

We can't let this golden opportunity pass us by, which is why MoveOn's teams are working overtime to put together TV ads that will air during peak times when seniors watch television, highlighting Trump's failures during the coronavirus pandemic, his attempts to use the pandemic to shut down the United States Postal Service, and more.

On average, MoveOn's monthly donors chip in about $12 a month. Can you chip in $12 a month to help us launch our ads and keep them on the air for as long as it takes?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

The potential impact of seniors abandoning Trump in November is enormous.

Voters over 65 will represent 23% of the entire electorate this November, the largest since 1970.3 If turnout numbers are similar to those in 2016, that is a whopping 30 million votes.4

In 2016, Hillary Clinton won 44% of the senior vote, but if Democrats can just win 50% of that voting bloc in 2020, it would be a total game-changer.5

And seniors have reasons to abandon Trump. People over 65 are the most at risk for serious complications from contracting the coronavirus, and Trump's monumental failure to lead during this moment is endangering their lives more than any other age group's.

Seniors also rely more on the Postal Service than any other age group, and Trump has been actively trying to bankrupt the USPS during the pandemic.6

And, most recently, Trump and the GOP have hatched a cruel plan to force Americans who receive coronavirus relief payments to pay them back through delaying those citizens' access to Social Security benefits.7

These are just a few of the reasons that Trump's approval with seniors has plummeted in recent weeks, but we need to hammer this message home to these folks to help keep Trump's actions to hurt seniors top of mind when they head to the polls.

Mar: Help us spread the word by chipping in $12 a month to get our TV ads on the air during peak hours when seniors will see them and keep them up for as long as it takes. (The average gift from a MoveOn monthly donor is about $12 a month, but whatever you can afford will go a long way.)

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

Sign this petition re: protecting wildlife refuges

Tell Interior Secretary David Bernhardt to rescind this plan immediately, and to restore protections on wildlife refuges.

Dear MoveOn member,

Since the day that Donald Trump took office in 2017, his administration has been constantly targeting public lands. Whether it's rolling back offshore drilling regulations or loosening regulations on endangered species, our natural resources and ecosystems have been in grave danger over the last few years.1 The latest target of the Trump administration's assault on our public lands? Our nation's wildlife refuges.

The U.S. Department of the Interior plans to open an unprecedented number of wildlife refuges to more hunting and fishing—totaling more than 2.3 million acres of public lands across 97 national wildlife refuges and nine fish hatcheries. This reckless decision threatens millions of animals and must be reversed immediately.

Tell Interior Secretary David Bernhardt to rescind this plan immediately, and to restore protections on wildlife refuges.

It's difficult to overstate the danger of this decision, especially in the current moment. America's wild animals are in danger in the very places set aside to protect them. Opening national wildlife refuges to more hunting is exactly the kind of action that is fueling the wildlife extinction crisis. Species like mountain lions, migratory birds and black bears will have their safe havens turned into death zones.

We should be working to protect animals, not making it easier for them to be gunned down. These wild animals deserve to be safe from hunting in the very places set aside to protect them.

A nuclear bomb that would destroy our fundamental rights

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's hospitalization last week was a terrifying reminder of just how much the future of the Supreme Court—and our rights and justice in America—will be on the line this November.

Dear MoveOn member,

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's hospitalization last week was a terrifying reminder of just how much the future of the Supreme Court—and our rights and justice in Americawill be on the line this November.

In the next few years, it is highly likely that Ginsburg, who is 87, and Justice Stephen Breyer, who is 81, will retire because of illness or age.

That means that if Donald Trump wins re-election and Mitch McConnell keeps control of the Senate, we may face a terrifying and unprecedented 7-2 right-wing majority on the Supreme Court, and justices installed by George W. Bush and Trump would have the last word on U.S. law for GENERATIONS.

It's a nightmare scenario: In the future, you could have a Democratic president and Congress that pass a slew of progressive legislation, only to have the right-wing, pro-corporation Supreme Court strike down every last bit of it.

This 7-2 rock-solid right-wing majority would be the devastating culmination of decades of Republican dreams and schemes—a nuclear bomb that would destroy our ability to protect our fundamental rights and hard-fought progressive victories.

That's one of the critical reasons why MoveOn has launched a massive, grassroots effort to defeat Trump and end GOP control of the Senate. MoveOn's plan for 2020 is the biggest, boldest election program in our 22-year history. We're targeting the battleground states that will decide who controls the White House and the Senate, and we are focused on inspiring millions of new voters to turn out to defeat Trump and the GOP.

On average, MoveOn's monthly donors chip in about $12 a month. Ensuring a robust election program that can compete with the extreme right wing will require consistent and reliable funding. Can you chip in $12 a month to support MoveOn's record-shattering push to defeat Donald Trump, end GOP control of the Senate, and protect the Supreme Court?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Mar, if Trump and the GOP win in November and the GOP strengthens its hold over the Supreme Court, it will be the biggest blow to the progressive movement in decades.

Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and their fellow Trump appointees would wreak absolute havoc on our nation. They would

  • overturn Roe v. Wade and ban abortion nationwide,
  • gut the right to vote—especially for voters of color—by allowing Republicans to impose draconian voter suppression laws that would make it harder to register to vote and would allow GOP officials to kick millions of citizens off the voter rolls,
  • allow Republican governors and state legislators to gerrymander with impunity, allowing the GOP to cheat their way to victory,
  • eviscerate the ACA, leaving millions of people without health care and at risk of going bankrupt if they become sick,
  • permit the NRA to roll back gun control legislation, including laws restricting access to firearms by domestic abusers and others at a high risk of perpetrating violence,
  • defang environmental laws that protect our clean air and clean water,
  • ravage the precious few workers' rights that remain, making it harder for workers to form a union, earn a fair wage, and get the benefits they deserve, and
  • do absolutely NOTHING to stop Trump's disgusting attacks on immigrants and refugees.

Already, 1 in 4 federal circuit court judges is a Trump appointee. Rabid right-wingers have been salivating at the prospect of a crushing conservative majority on the Supreme Court for decades, and they will do everything in their power to make it happen.1 In fact, Trump already has a "justice-in-waiting," Amy Coney Barrett, an extremist anti-abortion judge from Mike Pence's home state of Indiana.2

That's a core reason why MoveOn is getting to work in Arizona, Maine, Colorado, North Carolina, Montana, and Georgia—states that have crucial races for control of the Senate. At the same time, we can't afford to pull any resources out of critical presidential swing states needed to defeat Trump, such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Florida. Executing both of these ambitious efforts is an enormous undertaking, which is why your support for MoveOn is so crucial.

While Trump and the GOP have already amassed a gargantuan war chest funded by their billionaire backers, MoveOn doesn't take a dime from corporate donors, so we rely on MoveOn members like you to fuel our work. We don't need to match the right wing dollar for dollar, but we do need resources to fully power our work to the greatest extent.

Ensuring a robust election program that can compete with the extreme right wing will require consistent and reliable funding. Can you chip in $12 a month to power fuel MoveOn's bold grassroots effort to defeat Donald Trump, end GOP control of the Senate, and save the Supreme Court from total right-wing control. (The average gift from a MoveOn monthly donor is about $12 a month, but whatever you can afford will go a long way.)

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

Sign our petition

Please add your name if you agree our nation must do more to guarantee safe and fair elections in 2020.

Dear MoveOn member,

It's Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, and we need your help to make sure all our voices are heard in November.

Along with our friend Michelle Obama, we're co-chairs of When We All Vote, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the race and age voting gap.

Yes, we had COVID-19. Yes, we made the news, and luckily, we got through it. But we know there are millions of Americans and families across this country who have been put in desperate situations and have not come out so lucky. We've seen firsthand the effect this disease can have on our families and communities, and now we need your help to make sure it doesn't stop anyone from voting in the upcoming elections.

Just like Michelle Obama said, "No one should have to choose between making their voices heard and being healthy and safe."

This is where you come in—yes, you reading this email! Sign When We All Vote's petition telling Congress to support the Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act of 2020.

With the threat of COVID-19 looming over the November election, Congress must act to ensure every American has the ability to cast their ballot safely and without unnecessary risk. Tell your elected officials to expand access to vote-by-mail, early voting, and online voter registration.

When We All Vote supports the Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act of 2020, because it includes three key elements that make our elections more safe and fair. We join When We All Vote in their commitment to increase voter participation in every election by implementing these changes:

  • Expand Access to Vote-by-Mail: Vote-by-mail could be the only safe and secure option for some Americans. States must offer multiple options for requesting, receiving, and returning mail-in ballots while maintaining the security of our voting system; multiple ways to request mail-in ballots, including online, in person, by phone, and by mail; and safe and secure options for returning ballots by expanding deadlines for mail-in ballots to be requested and returned.

  • Expand Early In-person Voting: While all Americans should have the choice to vote by mail, it is crucial that we recognize that many people will prefer to vote in person. We must make in-person voting as safe and available as possible. Expanded early voting will allow voters to cast their ballot a few days or sometimes weeks before Election Day.

  • Expand Online Voter Registration: We should not make voter registration complicated if we really want everyone to participate. Online voter registration is a safe, accessible, and secure way that voters all across this country can sign up to participate in our democracy. It allows eligible voters to quickly and easily register to vote online from the comfort of their own home.

So what do you say? Are you with us? Join us and sign When We All Vote's petition to expand access to vote-by-mail, early in-person voting, and online voter registration now.

We know that when we knock down barriers to casting a ballot and make voting more accessible no matter who you are, more people—especially young people and people of color—turn out to vote. And when we all vote, we create a stronger democracy. Democracy doesn't appear like magic, you guys. We have to work at it, and that means each of us has to participate.

Please add your name if you agree our nation must do more to guarantee safe and fair elections in 2020.

Thank you and take care,

The U.S. Postal Service is about to run out of money due to the coronavirus and Republicans

The Postal Service is in crisis, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and draconian Republican mandates. It will run out of money between July and September, at which point its "operations will cease," if Congress doesn't act.

Dear MoveOn member,

The Republican crusade to kill the U.S. Postal Service went into overdrive last week, when Donald Trump installed a top Republican donor as the new postmaster general.1

The Postal Service is in crisis, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and draconian Republican mandates. It will run out of money between July and September, at which point its "operations will cease," if Congress doesn't act.2

Congress quickly bailed out the airline industry to the tune of $50 billion. That bailout included $4 billion for FedEx and UPS.3 But Trump and Republicans in Congress continue to stonewall emergency funding for the 245-year-old Postal Service. Why? It's all part of their quest to privatize it.

And now, at this most critical moment in its fight for survival, the Postal Service will be led by a Trump crony. Trump has gone so far as to call the Postal Service "a joke."4

Mar, we need to fight back—and quickly. There's reason for optimism: The Postal Service is by far the most popular government agency, with a 90% approval rating.5 It's one of the largest employers in the U.S., with a workforce of 630,000 people, 40% of whom are people of color.6 And in an election year, Republicans can't be seen killing the Postal Service, a lifeline for so many Americans, especially in the middle of the current pandemic.

That's why MoveOn's work to shine a spotlight on Republican efforts to kill the Postal Service is so critical. But we urgently need to increase the pressure on key Republicans by expanding our digital ad campaign and launching a TV ad campaign in rural parts of key states, where what the Postal Service does is particularly essential.

On average, MoveOn's monthly donors chip in about $12 a month. Can you chip in $12 a month to help launch and sustain MoveOn's all-hands-on-deck efforts to save the Postal Service?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

The Postal Service serves every American in every community, no matter how remote their location, six or even seven days a week, and all for the same price. That includes delivering lifesaving medications—more than 1 billion prescriptions last year—groceries, mail, census forms, vote-by-mail ballots, and so much more.7

And since we don't expect a vaccine for the coronavirus to be widely available in time for this November's elections, the Postal Service will be essential to enabling millions of Americans to vote by mail. In the last two federal elections, about one in four voters cast their ballot by mail.8 This November, the vast majority of voters will need to vote by mail.

But despite the Postal Service's centuries-long service to the American people, for the last 40 years, Republicans have sought to "starve, strangle, and sabotage" it.9 And now, the coronavirus pandemic is giving a frightening boost to their efforts.

Most Americans don't know it, but the Postal Service doesn't receive a single taxpayer dollar.10 It is entirely funded by revenue from the sales of stamps and postage.

But Congress sets the rules for the Postal Service, and in 2006, Republicans in a lame-duck session of Congress passed a law forcing the Postal Service to pre-fund its employee pension and retirement costs, including health care, for the next 75 years.11 That means it must fund retirement accounts for employees who haven't yet been hired—or even born.

The year that mandate passed, the Postal Service made $900 million in profits; it has not had a single profitable year since.12

Now, the coronavirus pandemic has caused the volume of mail to plummet, since the vast majority of mail is sent by businesses, and the Postal Service is about to run out of money.13

The Postal Service will not survive the summer without immediate action by Congress. Mar, we need your help to turn the heat WAY up on key Republicans who are blocking emergency funding for the Postal Service.

Can you chip in $12 a month to help MoveOn fight for as long as it takes to save the Postal Service? (The average gift from a MoveOn monthly donor is about $12 a month, but whatever you can afford will go a long way.)

Yes, I'll chip in monthly to help save the Postal Service.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support our work? The MoveOn community will work every moment, day by day and year by year, to resist Trump's agenda, contain the damage, defeat hate with love, and begin the process of swinging the nation's pendulum back toward sanity, decency, and the kind of future that we must never give up on. And to do it we need your ongoing support, now more than ever. Will you stand with us?
