I wanted to make sure that you saw this petition and email from Lisa Montgomery's sister, Diane Mattingly. We have less than a week to save Lisa's life. She is still slated to be executed by the federal government on January 12, 2021, after the system has failed her over and over again. 

If Trump allows this execution to take place, it will be a deep moral failure on the part of our government. There is a lot of chaos and uncertainty in the final days of this administration, but we do know the federal government will kill Lisa unless action is taken.

Without action from President Donald Trump, my sister, Lisa Montgomery, will be executed on January 12, 2021.

Sign the petition to save her life and demand Trump provides a stay of execution.

We have only a matter of days to save Lisa's life. Lisa Montgomery—a mentally ill woman who was the victim of gang rapes, child sex trafficking, and domestic violence—was sentenced to death by a jury that never learned the full extent of the sexual violence and physical abuse Lisa endured.¹ As a result of her trauma, Lisa is now so unstable that she must take a complex cocktail of medications to prevent full-blown psychosis.

The story of Lisa's life is worse than a nightmare. She was born with permanent brain damage caused by her mother's drinking during pregnancy. A child of extreme poverty, she was also repeatedly raped by her stepfather in the private room he built for her. Lisa was routinely beaten and terrorized by her mother. Lisa's mother trafficked her to men who were allowed to rape Lisa in exchange for utilities and other services. Although this abuse was suspected or known by teachers, a police officer, and a judge, nobody intervened to protect Lisa.² 

When I was a child, the Department of Social Services removed me from our home. But they left Lisa behind to be tortured by her mother and stepfather. Sign this petition to save her life.

Lisa's nightmare continued when Lisa married her stepbrother at the urging of her mother at the age of 18. He continued the cycle of abuse, raping and beating her. Not surprisingly, this lifetime of torture exacerbated Lisa's genetic predisposition to mental illness, and it caused her to develop a dissociative disorder and complex post-traumatic stress disorder. She often cannot tell what is real and what is not. She suffers from flashbacks where she relives her rapes. 

Before her arrest, Lisa never received treatment for her mental illness, and her symptoms worsened over time. In 2004, in the grip of a psychotic episode, Lisa killed a pregnant woman and took her baby.^3,4 Lisa can never undo her crime, but she took responsibility for it and offered to plead guilty and spend her life in prison. The prosecutor rejected this offer and sought the death penalty.

The lifetime of rape and sexual torture that Lisa endured is not an "abuse excuse," as the prosecutor argued at her trial. Her history of abuse helps to explain the depth of her disabilities. Yet the jury never had the chance to consider how her history of devastating trauma has impaired her daily functioning. Courts have rejected Lisa's claims for relief, and her case now rests in the hands of the President.

I am asking President Trump to consider the evidence the jury never heard and to spare her life. Spending the rest of her life in prison is more than adequate punishment for this crime, given Lisa's traumatic history and mental illness.

Remove Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz from office

MoveOn is launching an all-hands-on-deck campaign to ensure that all of the Republican officials who helped incite Wednesday's violence are held accountable for their part.

We will not forget that the violent mob of white supremacists who stormed the Capitol on Wednesday carrying guns, pipe bombs, sledgehammers, and zip ties were directly incited to act and supported not only by Donald Trump, but also by leaders of the Republican Party, who knew exactly what they were doing and how dangerous it could be.

Just moments before the mob began to march toward the Capitol, Rudy Giuliani said that there should be a "trial by combat" to keep Trump in power.¹

Republican Senator Josh Hawley was photographed enthusiastically greeting some of those who would participate in the siege in the hours before it began.²

Republican Senator Ted Cruz repeated conspiracy theories about nonexistent election fraud on the floor of the Senate, and even after the attempted coup, he still voted to stop the certification of our free and fair election.³

And as the mob was occupying the Capitol, Trump released a video reiterating that they were "very special people" and telling them that he loved them.⁴

Donald Trump should immediately be removed from office, but that is only the beginning. He should be prosecuted for his part in inciting a riot, and Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, and the other elected officials in Congress who supported the effort should resign or be expelled. And if they don't leave office now, they must be defeated at the ballot box.

Let's be very clear: No elected official who showed support for the movement that led to Wednesday's siege should hold an ounce of power in Washington.

And because of our victories in Georgia, Democrats will soon control both houses of Congress and must wield every ounce of their power to strip the House and Senate members who voted to overturn the election of leadership positions and committee assignments, and they must move forward with resolutions to expel them from the chambers.

There is already a groundswell of bipartisan support for this. The two largest newspapers in Josh Hawley's home state of Missouri have called on him to resign for his actions, and his publisher has dropped his upcoming book deal—but we cannot let it stop there.⁵

Hawley, Cruz, and their fellow seditionists in the House and Senate wanted to use their power to consolidate support from Trump's base to propel them to further electoral victories and, in the case of Hawley and Cruz, runs for the White House in 2024.

Well, they certainly succeeded in consolidating the support of Trump's base, who shattered windows and climbed over barricades to support their efforts at overturning the election and undermining our democracy.

We cannot and will not let them get away with this. They must be held accountable and removed from Congress—and if they are not, then we will remove them at the ballot box.

Yesterday, as Congress was certifying the results of a free and fair U.S. presidential election, a mob of white supremacist terrorists—directly incited by Donald Trump—violently stormed the Capitol and attempted to overthrow the U.S. government and illegally install Trump to a second term.

Yesterday, as Congress was certifying the results of a free and fair U.S. presidential election, a mob of white supremacist terrorists—directly incited by Donald Trump—violently stormed the Capitol and attempted to overthrow the U.S. government and illegally install Trump to a second term.

These disgusting acts of terrorism and sedition were the direct results of Trump's vicious lies, futile attempts to cling to power, and his all-out assault on our country and democracy. Make no mistake: This is what treason looks like, and it's absolutely clear that Trump cannot serve as U.S. president for a single second longer without posing a threat to the security of our nation. Which is why MoveOn is announcing an emergency nationwide campaign to immediately remove Trump from office. 

We are calling on Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment today, declare that Trump is unfit to serve, and remove him from power. If those officials fail to act, Congress must immediately convene an emergency session to impeach and convict Trump, remove him from office, and bar him from ever holding public office again in the future.

Here's the good news: The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives has the votes to immediately impeach Trump. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has already signaled she will support impeachment, and members of the House Judiciary Committee are already drafting articles of impeachment. Even a sitting Republican member of Congress has come out in support of removing Trump from office.² And because of our victories in Georgia, Democrats also control the Senate and can wield power in the process of conviction and removal.

But we know Trump and his allies are going to put up an extreme fight. In fact, Rush Limbaugh is already calling for the continuation of this despicable violence.³

Trump must be removed from office (sign the petition)

Trump must be removed—and ultimately held accountable for the attacks on our elections, incitement of violence, and so much more.

Dear MoveOn member, 

Congress met today to recognize what over 81 million voters decided nearly two months ago: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's victory in the November election. And in response, Trump, his Republican enablers, and violent, white, right-wing extremist supporters continued their attempted coup to overturn the election and create chaos.

To be clear: This coup attempt continues to fail. In two weeks, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be inaugurated. And with yesterday's inspirational victories in Georgia, they will have a Democratic majority in the Senate and House to take steps to rebuild our democracy and our country. 

Every person involved in this attempted coup, including the right-wing extremist supporters, Republicans who voted against certifying the Electoral College votes, and Donald Trump himself, must be held accountable.

Now is no time to be timid. We need bold, immediate action. President-elect Biden said it best on the campaign trail: "If I have the honor of being elected president, we're not just going to tinker around the edges. Trump has spent the last four years using the White House as a shield against facing consequences for his crimes, but in just 15 days, that protection ends, and we need to launch a campaign to demand that state and federal officials use their power to investigate—and, if necessary, indict and prosecute—him for his laundry list of corruption and criminality.

On Sunday, The Washington Post released shocking audio of an hour-long phone call between Donald Trump and election officials in Georgia in which Trump spouts endless conspiracy theories claiming he won the election, begs officials to "find" enough votes to change the outcome, and even threatens them with legal action if they don't do his bidding.¹

Not only is this call an outrageous and disgusting example of Trump's failing attempts at overthrowing our democracy, it also likely violates both state and federal election interference laws, and Trump must be held to account the moment he leaves office.²

This call with Georgia officials is only the latest in a long list of criminal offenses that could put Trump in legal jeopardy starting January 20. Here are nine more to round out our Top 10 List:

1. His campaign finance violations. Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen admitted in 2018 that he arranged hush money payments using campaign funds to stop Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels, who both alleged that they had affairs with Trump, from sharing their stories during the 2016 election cycle.³ Cohen was sent to prison for his part in these crimes, and although he admitted that Trump directed him to make the payments, Trump avoided prosecution at the time because of his status as the president. But Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. is still looking into these allegations, and when Trump leaves office, he could still be charged in relation to the payments.⁴
2. Tax fraud. The Manhattan DA is also actively pursuing an investigation into Trump and the Trump Organization's taxes, and the potential implications are massive.⁵ Trump lost an appeal in October to stop the DA from subpoenaing his tax returns, which the DA has suggested will show "possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct" that could lead to years behind bars.⁶
3. Real estate fraud. Since 2019, the New York attorney general has been investigating allegations that Trump and his company have routinely inflated the value of his properties in order to secure loans and reduce his taxes.⁷ Trump has refused to participate in the investigation thus far, using his status as the president as an excuse.⁸ But starting at 12:01 p.m. on January 20, he can no longer hide from the investigation.
4. Conspiracy to defraud the United States. Put simply: It's illegal for anyone to agree to obstruct the work of a federal agency—in this case, the United States Postal Service. If Trump and his administration are found to have made attempts to sabotage the Postal Service in an effort to influence the results of the 2020 election, they can all be held liable.⁹
5. Violating the emoluments clause. Trump has repeatedly used the office of the president to promote his private businesses and make money. There are currently three active lawsuits against Trump for violating the emoluments clause by hosting foreign officials at multiple Trump properties during his time in office and accepting large sums of money from them without consent from Congress.¹⁰
6. Violating the Hatch Act. The Hatch Act bars federal employees from engaging in certain political activities while on the job, and although the president is not technically bound by the Hatch Act, he can still be held criminally liable for coercing other federal employees to violate it—as Trump did multiple times in 2020 alone by holding campaign events at the White House.¹¹
7. Obstruction of justice. In his report on the Trump campaign's involvement in 2016 election interference, special counsel Robert Mueller identified at least 10 instances of Trump obstructing justice through his attempts to stop the investigation, fire those involved, stop the disclosure of evidence, and more.¹²
8. Bribery. The crux of the impeachment case against Trump was bribery. He withheld nearly $400 million in military aid from Ukraine and asked that officials find dirt on then-candidate Joe Biden in return for the aid being released.¹³ Although he was acquitted in a sham trial in the Senate, the Constitution does not bar Trump from facing criminal charges for this bribery once leaving office.¹⁴
9. Multiple allegations of sexual assault. At least 26 women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct and sexual assault since the 1970s, and there are two active lawsuits brought by survivors against Trump which will move forward after he leaves office.^15,16

Any one of these crimes would be enough to result in serious legal consequences for people outside of public office—and in just 15 days, that will be Donald Trump.

But make no mistake: One of the reasons he is trying so hard to overturn the election results is because he knows how much trouble he could be in the second he starts life as a former president, and he will do whatever he can to avoid facing the music. It is also still possible that he will attempt to preemptively pardon himself, but presidential pardon power only covers federal laws, meaning any laws he broke in New York, Georgia, or anywhere else aren't covered, and leading lawyers argue that presidents cannot pardon themselves.
