Tell Nextdoor: Ban QAnon

If Nextdoor truly cares about community well-being, it will ban QAnon content in public and private groups, and set up content moderation policies that explicitly target white supremacy and racism. Sign the petition.

The January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol had right-wing extremists and conspiracy groups like QAnon at the center of the violence.¹ But moderators at Nextdoor, a neighborhood-based social network, have been sounding the alarm to the company about the growing number of QAnon groups on the platform since at least last October. Nextdoor took months to respond, finally sending a message to moderators five days after the violent insurrection in Washington, D.C. In their late response, Nextdoor simply referred moderators to its policy on COVID-19 and election misinformation, which has no guidance about incitement of violence or fear, leaving moderators without a way to protect their communities.²

As we know—and saw just a few days ago at the Capitol—white supremacy is violent online and offline. Nextdoor feeds this violence by allowing QAnon on its platform. If Nextdoor truly cares about community well-being, it will ban QAnon content in public and private groups, and set up content moderation policies that explicitly target white supremacy and racism.

According to Vox, calls from Nextdoor moderators for an outright ban on QAnon have been growing since January 6.³ Nextdoor now says—privately—that it views QAnon as a hate group.⁴ Yet, the company has no plans to make that hardly courageous opinion public.

Unfortunately, Nextdoor's racism problem doesn't start or end with QAnon. After the police murder of George Floyd, Nextdoor put out a statement saying, "Black lives matter," and "Everyone should feel safe in their neighborhood."⁵ But Black and brown Nextdoor users felt that Nextdoor actually enabled racial profiling and allowed moderators to take down content that supported the Black Lives Matter movement.

With that history, it's no surprise that right-wing conspiracy groups are flourishing on Nextdoor.

Other platforms. including Twitter, which suspended over 70,000 QAnon-linked accounts, are taking the threat of QAnon seriously.⁶ By doing nothing, Nextdoor is helping hate groups spread online lies and incite offline violence in thousands of neighborhoods. Nextdoor needs to know that its negligence is dangerous and damaging to both democracy and the company itself.

Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley

This is not about revenge. It is about making sure this doesn't happen again. Most Republican voters still believe that the election was stolen, because of the lies they were told by GOP leaders. Cruz and Hawley believe that they have gained politically from their actions. Trump hasn't gone away, and neither have the white supremacists he emboldened and radicalized.

Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley are enemies of democracy, and they must not remain in Congress. Democracy cannot abide lawless lawmakers.

I've been in or around politics for over a half-century now. The current Republican Party is the most treacherous, corrupt, and cult-like institution that I have ever encountered.

The Biden presidency marks a new beginning, but we dare not minimize, forget, or dismiss the calamity of the last several weeks—or the last four years. Unity does not mean letting the instigators of an attempted government coup off the hook.

That's why I'm writing to you today.

Right before the storming of the Capitol on January 6, Representative Lauren Boebert tweeted, "Today is 1776."¹

At the rally that preceded the riot, Representative Mo Brooks said, "Today is the day that American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass."²

We must expel Boebert, Brooks, and other seditionists in Congress who incited or helped organize the events leading up to the attack on the Capitol.

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution is clear: Those who engage in rebellion or insurrection against the U.S. government are disqualified from serving in Congress.³

Trump must be convicted in his impeachment trial in the Senate, and it must be swift and serious.

This is not about revenge. It is about making sure this doesn't happen again.

Most Republican voters still believe that the election was stolen, because of the lies they were told by GOP leaders. Cruz and Hawley believe that they have gained politically from their actions. Trump hasn't gone away, and neither have the white supremacists he emboldened and radicalized.

As additional details come out and more firsthand accounts continue to be pieced together, one thing is clear: Dangerous, militant extremists plotted to overtake the Capitol. These insurrectionists came to Washington with the intent of committing violence against lawmakers.

How we can remove seditionists from Congress

Trump is no longer the president, and I say that we treat him as though he never was. No $200,000 pension. No million-dollar travel budget. No national security briefings. No respect.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Now that Democrats are in power, I've got an idea: Let's defund Donald Trump's presidential pension and divert the funds to reunite migrant children with their parents.

Trump is no longer the president, and I say that we treat him as though he never was. No $200,000 pension. No million-dollar travel budget. No national security briefings. No respect. Not for someone who led a white supremacist insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, did everything he could to attack Black and brown communities, and trampled on our democratic values.

But we can't stop at holding only Trump accountable. We also need to hold accountable Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and all other right-wing members of Congress who helped incite a deadly, white supremacist attack on our Capitol and our democracy.

Which is why my friends at MoveOn—the biggest progressive advocacy organization in the country—are leading a huge, all-hands-on-deck campaign to demand that Trump be convicted in his Senate impeachment trial and banned from seeking federal office again, and that the seditionist members of Congress be immediately removed from office.

Mar, I was greatly dismayed when I read the explosive court filings in which federal prosecutors allege that the white supremacist mob that stormed the Capitol aimed to "capture and assassinate elected officials."¹

I was sickened when I read that some members of the mob even carried nooses, bats, pipes, chemical weapons, and zip-tie handcuffs, and that others planted bombs around Washington, D.C., in an effort to divert law enforcement from the Capitol.²

And I was disgusted by the video released last week in which the violent mob clearly says they were inspired by Trump, Cruz, Hawley, and other right-wing members of Congress. Members of the mob are heard saying: "[Ted] Cruz would want us to do this." "We are listening to Trump." "We are at war … traitors to the guillotine."³

But nothing has repulsed me more than the chilling allegations that sitting members of Congress may have actively aided and abetted the attack. Bombshell reports allege that Republican members of Congress may have led leaders of the white supremacist riot on "reconnaissance" tours of the building the day before the attack, apparently to make sure that they would know where to find the targets of their violence, including then-Vice President Mike Pence. And there are allegations that right-wing Representative Lauren Boebert live-tweeted Speaker Nancy Pelosi's location and movements during the attack on Capitol Hill, in what appears to have been an effort to help the racist mob locate her.^4,5

We simply can't let this despicable attack on our principles and one of our most cherished democratic institutions—an attack instigated from inside Congress—go unanswered. Which is why we absolutely must do everything we can to ensure that any right-wing politicians who incited racist violence are removed from office and held to account.

Like you, I watched the inauguration on Wednesday and felt a surge of hope and redemption.

We witnessed our cherished tradition of the transfer of power when Joe Biden was sworn in as president of the United States.

We saw Kamala Harris make history as the first woman, first Asian American, and first Black person to assume the vice presidency.

We saw Trump leave office, with his tail between his legs, scurrying off to Mar-a-Lago.

Today, Stephen Miller no longer works at the White House, and Jared Kushner no longer has an office in the West Wing.

And Mitch McConnell is now officially the Senate MINORITY leader.

Darn, that feels good.

But while our nation came together to toss these vile figures out of power, the harm they've inflicted remains. And the work to undo their despicable legacy begins with ensuring that there are serious consequences for Trump and every member of Congress who incited the white supremacist mob to launch an attack on our Capitol that left several people dead and many others injured.

Sign: Members of Congress who tried to overturn the election should be removed

All 147 Republican members of the House and Senate who voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election on January 6 must be expelled and removed for delegitimizing and trying to overturn the results of a free and fair election.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

On November 3, 2020, former Vice President Joe Biden was elected to be the 46th president of the United States by overwhelming margins in the popular vote and the Electoral College. Despite Biden's decisive victory, Donald Trump and other prominent Republicans commenced a daily assault on the legitimacy of the election that includes filing dozens of frivolous lawsuits seeking to have the results invalidated.

Hundreds of Republican elected officials across the country amplified these false claims, and in doing so, they helped incite the January 6 attack on our democracy at the Capitol building, which left five people dead, including one Capitol Police officer.

And even after this deadly insurrection, 147 Republicans still voted against certifying the election. This is unfathomable. Sign the petition here if you agree they should be expelled.

All 147 Republican members of the House and Senate who voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election on January 6 must be expelled and removed for delegitimizing and trying to overturn the results of a free and fair election.

After the Civil War, the courageous Reconstruction Congress implanted safeguards to protect our government from traitors and others who would seek to destroy the Union. To that end, Section 3 of the 14th Amendment stipulates:

"No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof."

During the four years Trump was president, House Republicans pledged their loyalty to Trump above our country. In 2019, nearly every Republican refused to vote to impeach Trump for his numerous violations of his oath of office and his abuses of power. They have proven over and over again that they are unreasonable, condone lawlessness, and are unfit to hold ANY position in elected public office. And two weeks ago, that unconditional loyalty to Trump helped foster a deadly insurrection, one that has scarred our country for years to come. 

ALL 147 Republicans who voted against certifying the 2020 election should be removed immediately.

Wednesday marked the beginning of a new era—and we're already seeing the impact.

The first step to rejoining the Paris Agreement to confront climate change. A proposal for a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented Americans without any increased enforcement. The end of the Muslim and African Ban. And there is so much more President Biden and Vice President Harris can and will have to do to meet the crises of the moment—and their accomplishments require us to fight alongside them and push them and the Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress to govern boldly and swiftly to create real change.

Will you watch and share this video that highlights some of the accomplishments on day one? Check it out, share it, and use it to tell the world about how elections have consequences. Then recommit to working for even more progress toward an America that works for all of us through the first 100 days of the Biden-Harris administration and beyond.

President Biden and Vice President Harris now have a historic opportunity to rise to meet a series of crises facing our country. The work of day one was inspirational. There's more to come—and so much more we need from them and the Democratic majorities in Congress:

• A massive COVID relief and stimulus package that puts people—not corporations—first, that includes recurring direct payments to Americans, a longtime plan to prevent a foreclosure and eviction crisis, free health care for all Americans, and coverage for undocumented Americans—building upon President Biden's framework to increase the minimum wage to $15, invest in vaccination distribution and testing, and bring relief to state and local governments.
• Sweeping measures to finally make our democracy work for all of us—to curtail the influence of money in politics, expand voting access, restore ethics and transparency, and more. This includes statehood for Washington, D.C., so that the hundreds of thousands of Americans in this majority-Black city are fully represented in the halls of Congress and have access to the resources they need and deserve.
• A moonshot level of focus and investment in combating climate change through a green recovery and an end to reliance on fossil fuels.
• Freeing millions of Americans from billions in student debt that is a burden on our economy and giving these Americans a chance to live their lives without the hardship of education debt.
• An overhaul of our criminal justice system to dismantle the carceral state and to defund the police who systematically use violence against Black and brown people.
• Restoring the rights of millions of LGBTQ+ people who deserve to be treated equally in health care, adoption, their service to their country, and every aspect of their lives.

And that's on top of working to make sure Republicans don't block essential stimulus measures and steps to confront the coronavirus, making President Biden's plan for immigration a reality, confirming bold appointees to the courts and critical commissions—all while Congress, the Department of Justice, and law enforcement agencies across the country need to tackle the threat of violent white supremacists and hold Trump and his seditious GOP enablers accountable for the violence they incited two weeks ago. Majority Leader Schumer must eliminate the filibuster, or all of this could be impossible to pass in the Senate.

Democrats must use every tool at their disposal to deliver real relief and progress to communities, from reforming the broken rules of our institutions to executive orders.

Trump may be gone, but let's not pretend that makes any of this work easy. Republicans will seek to block the Biden-Harris agenda. Democrats, eyeing a narrow majority, may be cautious. Big Money lobbyists will shout to be heard. Right-wing extremists and white supremacists still stand at the ready.

So we'll need to shout louder. We'll need to use our power.

Today, we can raise our voices with cheers of joy, relief, and hope at the new era and the progress we're already seeing. Share this Inauguration Day video on the big proposals President Biden has already enacted, and add what you want to see him do next.

Tomorrow, we'll double our efforts to raise our voices to demand the White House and Congress take aggressive steps and that we see solutions as big as the challenges we face.

Vice President Harris was escorted to the inauguration by her alma mater Howard University's marching band, and she was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court.

And because of the 50-50 split in the Senate, Vice President Harris will become one of the most consequential vice presidents in recent history, responsible for casting the tie-breaking votes to pass legislation for coronavirus pandemic relief, address the climate crisis, expand health care, protect voting rights, and more.

After four dark years, and in the shadow of the attempted right-wing coup perpetrated earlier this month, let this be a joyous reminder of the victories we can achieve as a multiracial, multi-generational movement for progress.
