Dear MoveOn member,
In every campaign, there is a turning point, and Mitt Romney's 47% speech may be it.
A hidden camera caught Mitt Romney telling his rich donors that nearly half our country—47% of Americans—are freeloaders mooching off the government1:
"My job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
People everywhere are outraged and offended. This is a HUGE opportunity to persuade undecided voters that Romney is the wrong choice for president. There's no shortcut—we need to get as many volunteers as possible in swing states talking to voters about Romney's comments right away.
That's why we're throwing Five Weeks to Win call parties to recruit more swing state volunteers who can engage with voters face-to-face. Last weekend's call parties were a blast—and incredibly effective: We recruited thousands of new volunteers. As one party-goer put it: "Being on the leading edge to re-elect President Obama, with millions of activists, feels GREAT!" To keep the momentum going, we need hundreds more parties to ensure long lines of Democratic voters on Election Day.
Can you host a Five Weeks to Win call party in Inwood on September 29 or 30?
Romney's 47% speech alone won't amount to a turning point in the campaign unless we seize this opportunity. Our strategy is to use volunteer power to show swing voters that Romney's comment about the 47% wasn't a gaffe—it was clear evidence of how Republicans think about the American people and why their policies favor the rich, not anyone else.
We've joined forces with the AFL-CIO and other partners to create the single largest independent get-out-the-vote program in the country. At 19 million members strong, together we're recruiting volunteers to talk with voters one-on-one. Decades of political science research shows that talking face-to-face with voters is dramatically more effective than anything else.
Experts say that right now, after the conventions are over, is when most voters are tuned in and making up their minds. This is a good time to persuade voters in swing states about Mitt's disdain for 47% of the population. Hosting a Five Weeks to Win party is an easy way to seize this moment, simply by opening up your living room.
Can you host a party on September 29 or 30?
Thanks for all you do.
